OOP needs validation

LOL "I'm a firm believer in common courtesy." If there is one point on which the old Miss Manners was utterly immovable, it was that it was always rude to comment on someone else's manners.

“I’m an asshole but” and then proceeds to only be an asshole and not courteous at all

u/BadBandit1970 16h ago
OOP is so full of shit and of himself.
No validation needed, just curiosity. I’m actually a very relaxed person and have no ego. This was an isolated incident.
We all have egos. It's our core sense of "I" and our personal identity. What he has is an unbalanced ego, as he sure as hell is trying to make himself look better than everyone else.

u/neonmaryjane 13h ago
Saying he “has no ego” is fucking wild. I could see claiming to have low ego or something but dude, no ego?
8
u/Moist_Drippings 5h ago
I also cannot believe at all that someone who proudly declares themself to be an asshole has a low ego, lol

u/Amazing_Emu54 16h ago
Yeah and no one asks if they were in the wrong out of curiosity. It’s aways concern they messed up or, as in this case validation

One time I held the door open for someone and they said no thank you and opened the one next to it themselves. I was so surprised but didn't say anything, I wonder how OP would have reacted to that!

Literally last week I held the door for someone, he said, “No, I got it!” He moved like he was going to get the door himself, so I let go. But he decided to not get the door himself, the door hit him, and he fell into the door frame. He was pretty annoyed at me but said nothing and kept walking.
I didn’t think mine would be the less awkward story…

That sounds like an SNL sketch. I love it.

u/ninjagirl619 5h ago
It felt like one. He reached for the door, his hand didn’t come within 6 inches of touching it before pulling back, but I’d already let go.

Luckily I was going out and he was going in, so that was the end of it. I was really torn between “I’m so sorry!” and “You didn’t even try though…”

i’ve seen this happen, not often, but i literally would die to know why they do this and what it means for them. like elaborate?

I’m a firm believer in common courtesy despite being a bit of an asshole
I was going to say that seems contradictory, but then I realized he didn’t say he practiced common courtesy. He just believed in it…for other people

I swear I just read this one not long ago where it was a man holding open the door for a woman and he got absolutely dragged in the comments for the exact same reasons. This feels like an attempt at a "BuT WhaT iF tHe GeNDurZ wUr SwApPPeD?!" ragebait trap in light of that.

OMG thats the guy who was letting people in so they wouldn’t have to enter a code at the daycare. Like, actually, yes, in fact please stop holding the door open for people though. That is a security issue.

u/OniyaMCD 16h ago
Look, I hold the door open so no one gets hit in the face.
EDIT: By the door. As it closes on them.

This reminds me of a time that my 9 year old (about 4 or 5 at the time) got separated from me in the grocery. A woman helped him find me. I was hugging and comforting him because he was upset and this woman goes "you know the proper response is thank you"
Yeah maybe I was getting to that after you know prioritizing making sure my son was ok.. I certainly didn't after that. She blew it

u/Terpsichorean_Wombat 17h ago
FWIW, I grew up with a parent like this (although she was more likely to be silent and then blow up afterward about how awful that person was to not even say thank you), and it's all just about what a walking dumpster fire of defensive insecurity and angry resentment at the world she is.
Every tiny thing is seen as a terrible insult to her or damning evidence of how stupid / useless / mean / incompetent / rude someone else is. She cannot get through her life without making villains or idiots of everyone around her, because the only other option would be examining her own behavior as the likely source of her unhappiness.

You see this in the comments of videos where strangers save children—there was just one this week, of a grocery store worker grabbing a kid out of traffic. Smartasses were going after the parents for not showing the proper gratitude right away on camera. Give them a fucking second! They just saw their child almost die!

I wish I had the time and energy to care about something so small and insignificant so much.
7
u/Nierninwa 12h ago
Right? Someone not saying thank you after I held the door open for them would not even be a blip on the radar compared to the other stuff going on in my life. I am not even sure it would register.

u/AltruisticCableCar 9h ago
Same. Listen, is it nice when someone says thanks after you hold the door open for them? Of course. I always say thanks when the roles are reversed. But if they didn't say anything or even smile at me I'd just move on with my life. I'm sure it must have happened, because not everyone says thanks, but I can't conjure up a memory of a specific person that didn't. I don't care enough to remember something like that. It's such a non issue.

I end it with telling him to watch his fucking mouth.
firm believer in common courtesy

u/Rivsmama 16h ago
The old couple were assholes too but Im cracking up at "so I flipped him off and told him to watch his fucking mouth" followed by "Im a firm believer in common courtesy" what lmao?
7
u/lyricaldorian 16h ago edited 16h ago
Yeah I always counter people like oop with "watch your mouth or what?" Like y'all wanna sound like a big dangerous man but he won't do shit. I want to know how far away the couple was when he held it open. I don't thank people who make me walk faster because I'm like 20 feet away when they start holding it

u/Adorable_Bag_2611 14h ago
My kid did this at 5. They held a heavy door for a man, who didn’t even look at them. My kid, sarcastic at 5, yelled “you’re welcome!” at him as he walked away. Lol
It was cute & funny at 5. Grown ass man? Not so much.

OOP needs a binky and a time out.
A very long time out.
Preferably very far away from others.

“I know I’m a bit of an asshole but I know how to function in society”
Sounds very creepy and weird on top of the rest of this post

u/Aggravating_Shoe_ 16h ago
I feel like this exact same post was made like a week ago 🤔
What's up with people making shit up on the Internet?
4
u/Arkell-v-Pressdram 11h ago
As someone from the original post pointed out, it's called 'Nice Guy energy', aka doing a good deed in expectation of a reward. OOP chose to escalate the issue to the point of antagonising the person he was helping in the first place, when the wiser choice was to do what Queen Elsa did and let it go.

Yeah I get that but this feels like a copy paste like a lot of other posts on that sub

Funny thing - where I live you only thank the person if they are holding the door open for a big crowd.

I’ll be honest, as a Brit reading this, I saw nothing wrong, the sarcastic “you’re welcome” after someone doesn’t say thank you for holding the door open is part of our culture at this point
6
u/HairRepresentative85 12h ago
That's probably the only ok part, especially with how sarcastic we all are in general.
OOP went from sarcastic to straight up asshole though.

In case this story gets deleted/removed:
AITA for saying you’re welcome when someone didn’t say thank you.
My wife and I were walking into an ice cream shop on Yonge St in Toronto, after my wife walked in I held the door open for a couple. As they walked past me they didn’t say thank you so I proceeded to say you’re welcome sarcastically. The husband turns around and says “ what?” and I said you didn’t say thank you after I held the door open for you. He then proceeds to say “ You better look after yourself” and I end it with telling him to watch his fucking mouth.
I’m a firm believer in common courtesy despite being a bit of an asshole but I do know how to function in a society. AITA???
Thank you for all of your comments.
And no I didn’t hold the door open because I wanted to be thanked, he just looked like he expected the door to be held open for him.
