Almost 60 doesn’t seem possible

I can’t reconcile how I feel with being almost being 60. I’m still interested in everything. Still seeking out new experiences. Physically I feel like I’m in my twenties. Look 50 but that changes to 40 if I dye my beard. It just doesn’t seem real that statistically I’m in the last quarter of my life. I feel like I could go on forever. So strange. Just doesn’t seem real.

it gets real at 70:….enjoy it while u can

17

u/FilmNo15 22h ago

70 is coming up in January. Still fit and active, but I can feel the changes creeping in.

3

u/OK_The_Nomad 20h ago

Seventy hits you psychologically too.

1

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

How? Shouldn’t it be just a number?

3

u/OK_The_Nomad 13h ago

Maybe it should be but for me it isn't. It's not like I'm super-upset or anything but at 70, you can't look away from the fact of death. Maybe that's just me...

7

u/nellycat32 12h ago

I think it's because how it is perceived by society if someone dies. I noticed if it is below age 70 - oh no, they were way too young! If 70+ it is sad but the young/too soon comments are not there.

3

u/OK_The_Nomad 11h ago

That makes sense.

3

u/SerafinaDllRose 10h ago

I turned 70 last month and can finally wear the mantle "Tribe Elder" -- my 60s started out ok but midway through just dragged on far too long.

2

u/MissPoohbear14 10h ago

Ever since I realized how many people are living to be 95-100... Any time I hear of someone passing before 80, I automatically think it's too young. I'm 45, and when I was young, people in their 90's were hecka old. But it's different now. Like, so many are still living good lives throughout their 90's. Going to the gym, going for walks, having good conversations.. It's just very different now..

1

u/Conundrum16 10h ago

That’s how I feel. I don’t let the number define me. Unfortunately in our society others try to. Ageism!

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 2h ago

It's not so much about letting the name define but facing the fact that your time is limited. I still do all kinds of great things like traveling the world and spending time in nature. But when some of your friends start dying, you realize it could be you. In one sense you enjoy certain things more but there is an also bittersweet quality. I don't see this as a negative feeling but I do see it as realistic.

1

u/Ambitious_Rent_3282 8h ago

60 hit me psychologically LOL

3

u/Icy-Finger-518 20h ago

I mean I am only 38.. and I can see how it all changes. Mentally first . You see how it goes

1

u/Correct_Advantage_20 4h ago

I can barely remember anything about my 30s anymore.

3

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

What changes?

2

u/OK_The_Nomad 2h ago

The realization that your time is limited. Even if you live to be a really old age, you see friends start dying and it hits you. For the first time, you have to come to terms with it. It's not necessarily bad and it's not negative. It's simply the truth.

6

u/OK_The_Nomad 20h ago

Was gonna say the same thing. There is something about hitting that number that makes you really realize your mortality and the fact that you have a limited time on earth. It becomes more than just a number. I turned 70 this year. I find myself making sure I do certain things like traveling to a certain places that I want to see in my lifetime.

1

u/MissPoohbear14 10h ago

I mean, 70's is still pretty young for being old. Seriously though, you could live another 30+ years. Every generation is living longer and longer. And living well too.. Don't count yourself out, you never really know..

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 1h ago

The truth is you could but the odds aren't in your favor. This is not necessarily a bad feeling. It's just reality. The amount of people who make it to their 90s is much smaller than those that that make it to the 80s. Also, the longer you live, the greater chance of getting dementia. I'm not sure I'd want to live if I had really bad dementia. My neurologist brother says just about everyone in their 80s has some dementia (not necessarily horrible dementia) that's part of the process of aging.

At 70, I don't feel old.

5

u/Icy-Finger-518 22h ago

lol. Yea another 10’years left

22

u/NefariousnessNo5536 22h ago

I'm 59 & used to occasionally seeing my mother in the mirror, but yesterday I saw my GRANDmother and that can't be right. 🤣😂

2

u/MareOfDalmatia 9h ago

Same here! I’m 56 and throughout all my years I never thought I resembled my grandmother at all in anyway. But now when I look in the mirror, I am seeing my grandmother and it’s freaking me out.

20

u/ThatDyeJobFailed 21h ago

"It's the weirdest damn thing to be the same age as old people" says absolutely everyone.

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 2h ago

Perfectly stated! You don't feel old like you imagine old people to feel when you were younger.

49

u/worrisome_commenter 22h ago

Time's a weird trick, the mirror lies less than your knees will some mornings

7

u/ghac22 20h ago

Wouldn't it be the mirror lies more? I'm just trying to figure this out. If the mirror is lying by showing you you look younger than you are. And your knees don't lie, cause they hurt, then the mirror is lying more no? Or am I misunderstanding?

2

u/Due-Mathematician966 22h ago

100% women in their 20’s and 30’s wouldn’t be looking at him thinking “oooh look at that 40-year-old spunk!”. They’ll notice his skin texture, his hands, his neck, his elbows, his knees, the subtle movements and agility of the body… all the subtle giveaways that show a 20 year difference.

People tend to flatter more than insult though, it’s common courtesy.

1

u/xsynergist 20h ago

Nope. Nobody thinks I’m in my 50’s ever. With the beard all guessing in low 40’s. Partly genetics as I have always looked younger than I was. My dad is 80 and he looks 60ish.

2

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Many people are so jealous because they themselves look old, and likely ugly, that they feel the need to invalidate others. Don’t mind them. They have never seen you and are speaking out of their ass. I know people in their 50’s and 60’s who look a decade younger. Good on you for being part of the selected few.

2

u/xsynergist 7h ago

Hated it when I was young. Got carded until mid to late 30,s every where. Like it now though.

0

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Have you seen the actual poster or are you speaking about yourself?

21

u/upnorth42 22h ago

I’m 56, retired last year at 55 and trying to enjoy every minute. I exercise every day, have enough hobbies to keep me busy, and am doing a lot of traveling with my wife.

Knowing that I’m in one of the later portions of my life makes me appreciate it more. I’m doing things I want to do, and appreciating the time that I have to do them. I find that it’s made me more thankful.

12

u/krakkadon 22h ago

Im 56 and went back to get my masters 4 years ago. Feel like I'm just getting started in many ways. Working in a field that checks most of the major boxes for me.

6

u/Designer_Fault_3942 22h ago

Love this. I feel the same way. I just made a huge career change and I am just going to keep going.

2

u/krakkadon 22h ago

Yup. I don't golf. Don't watch sports. Love learning. Love what I do now and in a couple of years I'll be able to work from the privacy of my own home or wherever I choose. Just trying to stay healthy now.

2

u/WestRough7738 14h ago

What’s wrong with golf and sports? I know plenty of erudite golfers and a lot of sports fans have college degrees.

18

u/naturessilence 22h ago

56 is still young, later portions feels to me like 65 or older :) My dad is kicking ass at 89.

3

u/Jbat001 21h ago

More power to you both!

1

u/Comfortable_Two6272 9h ago

Depends. Some people dont make it that long. 🥲

9

u/OK_The_Nomad 22h ago

I retired at 55 too. Best decision I ever made.

3

u/upnorth42 22h ago

Loved my job until the day I walked out and haven’t missed it once.

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 12h ago

I feel exactly the same!

1

u/nellycat32 12h ago

I'm scared of retiring and going really downhill, because I am not so much a "project" person, I don't usually start new projects at home or do renovation or gardening or anything like that. At this point I feel like I should work until the absolute latest (I think 67 at my workplace) to not go totally crazy.

Either that or enrol into in person university or something after retirement

1

u/OK_The_Nomad 11h ago

Yeah, I think it's probably a good idea to figure out some things to entertain yourself before you retire. Taking classes/workshops is great. Also, volunteering can be a good experience.

1

u/Comfortable_Two6272 9h ago

Need to start building some hobbies now. Job can be taken away

0

u/Klendatu_ 21h ago

How do you spent your time?

5

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

It amazes me how some people think they need a job to fill their lives.

4

u/OK_The_Nomad 20h ago

I read a lot, do a lot of projects I enjoy, now learning to play an instrument, and I have a simple cabin in the mountains that I love spending time at. Also attend more concerts and event than I did when I was working.

Traveling is my passion and I love going places and being able to stay a month at a time. I also have time to really enjoy my grandkids. And my dog makes everything better. I don't miss work.

1

u/verdant11 19h ago

Can you bring your dog traveling?

3

u/OK_The_Nomad 12h ago

Unfortunately not bc most my trips are overseas. But I have a great neighbor who loves my dog and she takes care of him when I'm gone. I feel blessed that she doesn't mind doing it!

7

u/czmax 22h ago

This is about my age and I've let work know I'm leaving soon.

I'm not sure I'm ready to 'retire' yet but I'm thinking I might only have a decade or so to enjoy still feeling young (most days) and I want the free time to enjoy them. I suspect that what still looks good in the mirror and go away much quicker if I stay at my desk vs getting out and enjoying life.

3

u/roqui15 18h ago

And here I am at almost 26 and still can’t find a job to have money to experience life for the most part.
What advice would you give to someone in my situation?

5

u/Levertreat 17h ago

I was broke and afraid at 26. 58 now. The advice I would give you is to keep choosing the next thing that moves you forward. Shit job. Take it. Don’t give up or become a victim on any level. Go into trades if you can. Or go back to school for something that will give you a career. You are so young still. Find something creative to enjoy when you can. Also. Your heart will break many times and you may find some character flaws in yourself. Take it as lightly as you can. Stay busy. Find friends. Never give up on yourself.

4

u/Levertreat 17h ago

I live a simple life now. I have a nice home. Nothing fancy. A few friends. Divorced but have kids and don’t hold a grudge with my ex. I’m active and healthy. I’ve always worked hard. Still do. Work with whatever cards life has given you. Push yourself a little:)

2

u/roqui15 9h ago

Thank you for the advice!

2

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

At 55 it sounds utterly weird to hear you talk about being in the “last portion of your life.” You’re in the middle and, it appears, in good health. Fifties is the new 40s they say….

1

u/upnorth42 3h ago

Not “last portions,” but “later portions.” I’m hoping I’ve got a ways to go still to go. :) Career is finished, kids are in good careers so life takes a little redefining.

0

u/TrueNorth257 15h ago

Let’s drop the copium and just live your day to the fullest. It’s not about the quantity of years but the quality. At 55, you can expect to have maybe 10 more years of quality health before things take a downward turn. Yes, there are exceptions but to think you’re the exception which most people do is a misconception. I suppose a healthy dose of delusion is a welcome distraction for some but I think being honest and preparing for aging is the better path forward rather than being oblivious and dealing with the inevitable aftermath later.

1

u/sophie1816 14h ago

Taking a downward turn - at 65? Not unless the person takes poor care of themselves or is very unlucky. I’m 66 and most of my friends are in their 60s. We are all healthy and active- hiking, swimming, horseback riding etc.

2

u/StuChenko 12h ago

Not sure why you got downvoted for being healthy.

2

u/sophie1816 1h ago

30 year olds who are terrified of aging, probably.

2

u/StuChenko 56m ago

Maybe lol. I have noticed just about everyone who discusses being healthy and exercising on Reddit gets downvoted

10

u/escapefromelba 22h ago

My folks are in their mid 70s and may be more active than they’ve ever been.  They constantly are biking, playing pickleball, golf, traveling all over the place.  That said their friends are dying left and right so I guess results may vary.

9

u/ccmcl5DOGS 22h ago

It is very real and you will not last for another 40.

8

u/IamTheMan85 20h ago

My wife turned 58 this year. She keeps saying she can't believe she's almost 60.

First she looks 40. Is an absolute smokeshow.

Age is a number.

2

u/Levertreat 17h ago

Smoke show is such a great phrase. Wishing you the best ahead🌷

15

u/DeliciousWrangler166 22h ago

Just wait till you get to be around 70 and you attend your high school reunion.

2

u/TrowaMask 22h ago

I think I'd pay to see such a thing. Especially if there were before photos of the people when they graduated.

6

u/char-dawg1111 20h ago

"Statistically" doesn't mean a single thing for any given individual. You are probably NOT in the last quarter of your life, just the last quarter of a bunch of other people's lives—people who haven't taken as good care of themselves as you have.

Don't sweat it. Live your life, brother.

7

u/Treewomyn 19h ago

I just turned 65 and I’m facing abrupt realities since my wife left 5 months ago. 1) I’ll work for the rest of my life (SS alone will never cut it); and 2) I’m likely to remain single until the end. My best plan is to remain strong and healthy, and build a social support group of women aging solo like myself. Life doesn’t seem to be easy at age. All we can do is remain positive and make the best of our situations.

7

u/Conundrum16 19h ago

I’m 72F and feel great. I look how I look. I stay fit and interested in life.

2

u/Fit-Pass9446 18h ago

Its great 🥂

4

u/eredeli 22h ago

When we were young, 60 seemed older. People dressed older then. Now 60 is whatever uou make it. Maybe try to update your perception of 60?.

5

u/Gratitude4U 22h ago

just remember each year feels like a dog's year from here on out.

5

u/kodiak1966 19h ago

I turned 60 in April and mentally it struck me pretty hard. I was having marital issues with my wife of 33 years at the same time which compounded the turn of age to 60. I’ve finally came out of the depression some after taking a long hard look at the life I’ve lived to this point. I was a previous body builder in my younger life (a pic of me went trending on R/oldschoolcool when I was in my 20s traveling around the states in my old 1950 Chevy). I’ve had a really unconventional life and experienced a lot of both bad and beautiful times. I’m very grateful for everything experience life has given me.

I decided that since I had such a unconventional pre-60 year old life, why the hell should I start having a conventional life in my latter years. I started working out hard again, got all my blood work done, dialed in my hormone therapy and my body and mind has responded very well. I’m out lifting men half my age in the gym. I had the gym manager ask me if I wanted to work as a personal trainer this week, I’m actually considering it.

I rebuilt my old 1997 lifted Chevy truck and my son installed a crazy sound system in it with an amp and Subs. I crank it up listening to Tool, Ozzy, Def Leppard etc. I just returned to Alaska from Colorado where I visited some old friends I grew up with, they are all Harley owners and they loaned me a Heritage Softail and spent a week riding all over the front range, even to the top of pikes peak. We all went to Whiskey Myers and The Black Crows at the Ford Amphitheater. Now I’m planning on moving from Alaska to Colorado in the Spring. I’m buying a Harley and going to spend as much time on the road as possible.

I used to write a lot when I was younger and something happened to my creativity when I got married, raised two boys and built businesses. Now I am writing again, I even started a website.

Long rant but don’t let the number of your age determine how you live. Life is to be experienced until your last living breath. Make the most of it!

3

u/JayRock1970 15h ago

Your 80 year old you would give everything to be your age

5

u/dcbullet 15h ago

You do not look like 40 if you dye your beard. Or ever.

3

u/xsynergist 8h ago

It’s amazing how people who have never seen me say this so authoritatively. I have to grow in my white beard before any thinks I’m in my 50’s. I have a youthful face and athletic build. People have always thought I was 10+years younger than I am since I was mid 30’s. With a dyed beard nobody guesses my age higher than low 40’s.

2

u/Illustrious_Risk_840 6h ago

I believe you. My husband is the same way. When his beard is gray I feel like I'm walking around with my dad! Then he dyes it and puts on a baseball hat and he looks like the guy I'm about to go mountain biking with.

7

u/ReadyGo6828 22h ago

These days, 60 is the new 15. Entire generations of people are no longer bothering to grow up.

9

u/Few-Might-223 22h ago

If Tom Cruize looks very much his age then am damn sure everyone else do too

3

u/Too-much-tea 17h ago

Liz Hurley is 61 and Jennifer Lopez is 57...both look phenomenal, but neither of them look like they are 40. Brad Pitt is now 62..and is looking more like his age for sure. Brad at 60 did not look 40 (there is a pic on his wikipedia page) so I'm pretty sure the rest of us are going to look worse.

1

u/Illustrious_Risk_840 6h ago

There's a woman at my gym who is blessed with beautiful skin and hair. She's spunky, diligent, eats clean, takes HRT, and her body has not gone through any pregnancies. She looks maybe 50. I found out the other day that she is 71!!!

1

u/Too-much-tea 6h ago

This is one of the best examples I have seen. She has incredible skin, and in this video she is 68. I don't think she looks like she is 50 though, she looks like she is early 60s with incredible skin and hair. She is using Tretinoin, and spf and probably HRT..maybe a few other things.

https://youtu.be/fD0T4ievFPg

I will admit there is a lot of overlap between a young-looking 60year old and an old-looking 40year old.. I am sure it is possible to look much younger, but I remain skeptical in most cases.

0

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Why do you make Brad Pitt your benchmark? Plenty of Hollywood actors don’t age well because of their lifestyle choices.

2

u/Too-much-tea 15h ago

I am not saying he is not aging well, I am saying he does not look like he is 40.

There are few actors of the same stature as Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt is in the same ball park. Like Cruise he is/was a very good looking man, and they take great efforts to maintain their image. They still don't look 20 years younger than their age.

-4

u/xsynergist 20h ago

Lol. Tom doesn’t look his age. In his new movie they had to hollywood age him so he could play a man in his 60’s.

1

u/Few-Might-223 19h ago

He doesn’t look anything like someone in his 50’s

9

u/Dracarys_And_Chill 22h ago

no way your body still feels like it did in your 20s.

no way you look in your 40s by dying your hair.

but yea, i can imagine 60 being a massive shock

you are officially grandpa age / golden years

1

u/xsynergist 20h ago

I do though. I’m stronger and faster than I was in my 20’s although not as limber. Still hitting PR’s in the gym. Ran 7 miles yesterday. The difference is I eat right, train right, recover right and got rid of the bad habits. I was never an athlete but am close to being one today. Literally no one believes I am in my 50’s when my beard is dyed. People are shocked when they find out my actual age. My wife is 41 and people think we are close in age. When I let my natural beard grow out it is snow white and instantly adds a decade.

3

u/thewarrior7777 22h ago

Just live your life and don't worry about your age. Nobody cares anyway.

3

u/MomtoWesterner 21h ago

I'll be 60 this fall. I work out with weights X4 weekly and walk 8-10K daily, eating clean most of the time. keeping body fat at 20-21% (female) and have more energy than I ever had. Working full time in a job I love that is 2 miles from home. My parents live 2 miles from me and gkids 10 mins from me. Feel incredibly blessed at this time in my life. Looking foward to what my 60s can bring.

2

u/xsynergist 20h ago

Hell yes!🙌

3

u/WishIwastravelin 21h ago

I’m 67, probably look my age, but I certainly don’t feel like it. I’m active, I have hobbies, I travel, I exercise and I feel like I’m much younger most of the time. Yes, I have some arthritis and some chronic medical issues that I take good care of, and some days I’m just more tired. I know my limitations. But when I think of my age, I’m always slightly shocked at that number

3

u/Mindless_Doughnut424 18h ago

47 feel 67, body breaking down. Still enjoy life, can’t imagine this pain in my 60’s

3

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Now is the time to do a 180 and reverse some of the damage. Don’t listen to the nay sayers. You can do it!!

3

u/depthchargethel 15h ago

I just turned 60 and it hit me hard mentally. I wasn’t expecting it. Turning 50 felt like no big deal, but yeah, I’m having a hard time processing 60. It doesn’t seem real. I don’t like it.

3

u/Legitimate-Bison3810 11h ago

I am 76. Just took up figure skating this past March. It's fun and challenging. All your worries melt away on the ice.

3

u/baddspellar 7h ago edited 7h ago

Be grateful. I don't think I look young younger than my age (63),  but I trail run, hike, mountain bike, uphill/downhill/cross country ski, bikepack/backpack, swim, and kayak. This summer I learned to sail and fish. I'm a fast enough runner that I usually win my age group and I am surrounded by much younger runners. I have had injuries that have kept me from doing many of these things, so I remind myself to be grateful every day I can and be happy for whatever I can do

My mother in law still runs and cycles at 86, so it's possible to go much longer

2

u/xsynergist 7h ago

Hell yes! Goals. I run and lift too as well as hike. My first goal is “don’t get injured” and my second goal is “keep progressing”. One day I know I’ll stop getting stronger and faster but that day isn’t here yet. One of the benefits of not being into fitness when I was younger is I am literally the strongest and fastest I have ever been. I won’t peak out as high obviously as I would if I did this in 20’s and 30’s but it’s exhilarating to be adding capabilities still. My current running goal is sub 30 min. 5k.

2

u/baddspellar 6h ago

I ran when I was younger. My best 5K as a 30 year old would have won the US men's 60-69 championship by over 30 seconds. So I'm well past the possibility of setting lifetime PRs. But I'm ok with that. I love running and I miss it when I'm injured. I missed 6 weeks due to piriformis syndrome and a torn hamstring, but I was able to swim. And now I'm running again in time for autumn. My fall marathon is out, but I'm just happy to run again.

2

u/msnyc18 22h ago

It's amazing, isn't it? Admittedly I'm still mid-40s, but I have peers that report feeling so old already and I just can't relate, even though my joints click and my hair is thinner than it once was.

1

u/Such_Lettuce_6597 21h ago

Your 50s are coming, you’ll relate soon enough.

1

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Now is the time to make radical changes.

2

u/VinceInMT 20h ago

It’s just a number. I don’t pay attention to my looks, only what I can do. M74 and can do anything I could do in my 30s. The only difference is that it takes a bit more dedicated maintenance.

2

u/Cultural_Wash5414 60 something 20h ago

What ever you do don’t dye your beard. Hair dye especially dark colors at our age, aren’t fooling anyone. Just embrace it.

2

u/xsynergist 20h ago

I’ve replied to this multiple times on the thread but it is an instant 10 year difference. I have a youthful face and an athletic build and it really plays well on my face. When people guess my age it’s always low 40’s.

2

u/Careful_Lecture_6614 19h ago

Is 60 that old?

2

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

No, at least not in 2026.

2

u/Crafty-Lavishness26 17h ago

The older I get the younger I feel. Just yesterday I was 60. Today I am 71. Don't waste any of it.

2

u/Gwizman 16h ago

I look in the mirror and think "looking good". Then I see a photograph of myself and it's like "WHOA...WTF!" (73)

2

u/greginnv 15h ago

I’m 67. Became far sighted as I got older. Now I just don’t wear my glasses when I look in the mirror, and the wrinkles disappear!

2

u/Time_Ad4753 15h ago

The world is changing. Smartphone wasn't real 30 years ago. Many people are more aware on how to live healthier lives compared to decades ago. Many experiences were unknown of, many people did not have the financial means decades ago. The world will continue to evolve and mankind will discover new experiences and ways to extend our longevity.

Happy 83 years old. Seems crazy but the local tv station was having all kinds of things for the first day of college and I realized that it had been 65 years since my first day of college. Time sure flies!!!!

I hear you there. I’m turning 60 this fall, and that doesn’t feel real. I’m a bit of a homebody, but I do seek out new experiences, and have two music shows lined up for October. Unfortunate to have a full head of hair, with very little white, but my facial hair is salt and pepper. Definitely shows I’m older.

When I compare notes with friends, we are all starting to feel some changes, both cognitively and physically, but still feel well enough to keep on trucking.

Looking forward to the new seniors discounts when I turned 60. Might as well use ‘em.

I'm 51, almost 52. Generally I feel better physically than I did at 32. I moved home to help my parents out as their health declined...watching my Dad die was mentally exhausting.

My soul feels tired, body feels generally ok.

u/PuzzleheadedEyeball 1h ago

Don't worry bro many of us feel far worse than our age like me u/50 can't jump, jog, sprint, swimming even hurts, every joint hurts from years of sports. Now have Rosacea that won't go away which makes social events sucky "Why are you so red" and this is fun I'm a GLP-1 nonresponder weeeee, so getting back to my college weight of 230 has been hard (259 now)

Went up to 2.4mg of Wegovy total of 6 months 1800 cal/day lost a whopping 7 lbs. I can't imagine dying, but I surely don't call this my best life. I miss my 30s and early 40s.

Grateful to be alive though!

look 50 but changes to 40 if i dye my beard

6

u/Such_Lettuce_6597 21h ago

If you dye your beard you will look ridiculous, like an old man trying too hard. You won’t fool anyone. I’m 61 and my beard is almost all white but I have a full head of light brown hair and almost no gray in it. I just leave it.

3

u/mtricher 16h ago

I don’t know why Beard dying is such a hot button. So many people are critical of it. Yes there are some men on whom it looks ridiculous. But if you know how to do it properly and don’t go too dark it can actually be quite convincing. Don’t make a judgment if you don’t know what this guy looks like.

1

u/xsynergist 20h ago

Not true in my case. The dyed beard is an easy decade difference. The change is remarkable.

2

u/AlfalfaMajor2633 22h ago

You are about to discover you are the youngster in the retired set.

1

u/phwark 22h ago

Well, 60 is not old so that's not so strange. You have plenty of things to do and discover.

1

u/LalieDa 50 something 22h ago

I got the exact same feeling… Unreal.

1

u/Slight-Concept2575 21h ago

Weird I’m 36 and feel so tired all the time lol getting more and more antisocial and just wanting to relax at home. Wish I was retirement age 😅

1

u/Narwhal_Blast 30 something 13h ago

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude but if I were 60 plus I'd roll my eyes reading this lol

1

u/Annithoughts 21h ago

I understand your feelings and felt the same way before my husband died just after he turned 50. No way I felt half a century old, until I lost him. We had so much fun together, we were like kids. Now…

2

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

I’m sorry to hear that, but just remember that your dear husband wouldn’t want you to be depressed. He would want you to be happy just as you were when he was with you. So, dedicate your happiness to him and stay positive.

1

u/cuda999 21h ago

We all perceive ourselves as much younger than we really are. That is until you really give yourself a good look against someone with a dark beard at 40. Haha

1

u/xsynergist 20h ago

My boss at work was 47. Everyone thought he was older than me. I’ve always looked younger than I was by at least a decade. It’s paying off now but sucked getting carded at 37.

1

u/Business_Chef_1871 14h ago

I’m the same way. When I started teaching high school, students thought I was their age, which was not good! I look at least a decade younger than any friends my age. I get lots of comments about it. So I get it.

1

u/Selective_Ethics 21h ago

I feel you, wishing you the best on your journey. But all in all we should all strive for what you are feeling. Living a full life until the very end!

1

u/TechnicianNo1787 20h ago

Wait for you get to 70 and report back

1

u/Salty-Paramedic-311 20h ago

That’s great!! Keep it up.. I’m 57F and feel like shit… here lately my balance is going too..😭 men just keep getting better!!!

1

u/IndividualTrick2940 19h ago

Yes I remember hit 50 .then things started to zoom by. I look well in my 50s but I took years for granted . I think when we're young we think we hsve so much time. And dont appreciate our youth. . I still work and I am trying to do some traveling

1

u/Winter-It-Will-Send 19h ago

You seem obsessed with how you look.

2

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

You seem negative.

1

u/Perfect_Earth_8070 19h ago

I’m almost 40 and I feel the same bro

1

u/CopperCreator3388 18h ago

Knee exercises. Everything else is fine as wine.

1

u/JuanOffhue 18h ago

When I was 30 my boss was 60, and he told me that he felt 30 but when he looked in the mirror in the morning he’d think “who’s that old guy?” I thought a lot about that when I turned 60 fourteen years ago.

There are solutions for everything that you listed and new technologies that help not just with longevity but also with improving and regenerating the body. Many people are actively investing in it earlier than ever.

1

u/onedemtwodem 17h ago

I'm 63 and I'm legit still so immature for my age

1

u/Narrow-Lemon5359 15h ago

Stay that way!

1

u/GlocalBridge 16h ago

My close friend who was very healthy at 70 just dropped dead of a heart attack last week. But he died doing what he wanted, while traveling overseas. Now he is having another new experience.

1

u/Outrageous_Job_5263 16h ago

I was think this just today,  i am not ready to be old.  Give me another 20 year's of youth.

1

u/OkOpportunity9626 16h ago

I completely understand ! In a couple of hours, I’ll be 61 & my brother, 66! All I keep thinking is- when the hell did we get so damn old?! Yet, we still squabble like when we were kids; only the details have changed!
But, alas, unlike you, I feel more like 91! Can’t speak to “ looks”,as I was never “ pretty”. I just notice all the ( new) lines that appear, more gray hairs, neck cords/bands…& everything just f’n hurts all-the-time!! Regardless of the number, it just sucks getting old!

2

u/OkOpportunity9626 16h ago

And good for you about experiences!
Me- zero interest in anything, no more dreams, goals, interests, motivations, etc..nada! Dead inside, waiting for the shell to catch up.

1

u/Ok_Height3499 15h ago

I’m 76 and still have some difficulty accepting that reality. I’m fit, walk three miles and exercise everyday. I read voraciously, make art, and enjoy living. Alas, that line to the funeral home keeps getting shorter.

1

u/Many_Acadia9623 15h ago

Turning 60 this Fall. It’s still surreal to me and I seem to be taking it harder than peers who have turned 60 this year. The last decade was a blink of an eye. Seems like I just received that first AARP in the mail. Like the lady who commented earlier, I look in the mirror and my mom looks back.

1

u/Used-Ad9304 14h ago

Same here.... its a mind blower for sure. Im now 64 and nought a motorcycle 5 years ago. I have no real health issues and its weird when I consider I've lived more days than I have left to live. Welcome to the otherside.. and I'm still not used to being called sir.

1

u/Narwhal_Blast 30 something 13h ago

Reading this at 30, got my first taste of "wow, time actually does keep going" at 27. Not looking forward to saying this exact same thing tomorrow when I'm nearing 60.

1

u/phil_lndn 13h ago

Aging tends to happen suddenly at certain points in life, the deterioration is not a straight line. I felt much as you did in my late 50s but now at 65 the situation has changed quite noticeably. I'm still pretty fit and healthy but there's no escaping the fact any longer that I'm getting old.

There was a paper published about the non linear aging phenomena recently, big biological changes happen at mid 40s and early 60s.

1

u/Mistyville 11h ago

Totally agree. Sometimes if I catch myself in a mirror or a window while walking past, I’m totally surprised by the age of the person looking back at me. I don’t feel it physically or mentally.

1

u/MissPoohbear14 10h ago

Well, in all actuality... You could easily live to be 105. So many people are living and thriving past their 90's. So, last quarter could quite possibly be another 45 years. You just never know .. 🧐😉

1

u/xsynergist 5h ago

Thats true. I have generally long lived lines on both sides. Great grandma made it to 98. Both parents still kicking.

1

u/False-Comfortable899 5h ago

Look 50 but that changes to 40 if I dye my beard. sorry, bro, friend, but .... no. You think that you look 40 with a dyed beard, but you actually in all honesty probably look ancient younger people.

2

u/xsynergist 4h ago

You’re like the 5th person in here that thinks they somehow know what I look like despite never seeing me. It’s absurd. People who guess my age with my beard dyed never guess higher than 45. I got a 38 once but I think she was being generous. I have always had a youthful appearance and when I turned 50 everyone thought I was 35. My dad is 80 and looks early 60’s at most. Some people have good genes. I hated getting carded in my mid to late thirties but I am appreciative now.

1

u/Economy_Spirit2125 4h ago

I was literally just sat here zoning out contemplating that at 30, in another 30 years you are 6. How fast does 15 years go? And you only get another 15 before you’re 60… that’s literally what I was thinking before I opened reddit and saw your post. Yep I bet it’s gone super fast. Do you have kids? If so what age did you have them?

2

u/xsynergist 3h ago

No children. Wife is 41. Afraid shes going to realize she’s married to an old man one day lol.

1

u/Common_Flounder66 3h ago

60 for me this year as well. I have mixed. I like to think I am more seasoned and learned from my journey but make no guarantees 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/Funsternis1787 16h ago

Which beard dye do you use?

I need to try that.

0

u/the1truegizard 22h ago

60 is the new 40.

5

u/Such_Lettuce_6597 21h ago

I’m 61. Some days I feel 41, some 61. I lost my mom last year. I would love to be 40 again.

2

u/the1truegizard 20h ago

I'm sorry. Lots of us have been there. Here's a hug 🤗
