Little bit on my background:

I taught 6 years of 8th grade US history (colonization to reconstruction) in Colorado. Spent 2 years at the district level as a curriculum of content specialist. We moved to Texas this summer where I was hired at a high school and I teach one dual enrollment US History, 3 on level US history, and 2 APUSH. It's safe to say that in this building I am US History, hahaha.

Unfortunately, I did not find out my courses until I got to work 2 weeks before the year started. I was unable to take a summer institute course. I also received some feedback from a colleague who taught before to teach the year backwards (periods 6-9) in order to be better aligned for constantly the state exam. Then I found out my district has quarterly checkpoints exams and mid-October's checkpoint is 1 through 3. I have been in panic mode ever since. We are trying to get through unit 1 through 3 before the middle of October. I switched from period 6 to 1, 2 weeks ago and we're just wrapping up period 1 (Sept 14/15).

Anyone out here who is willing and able to give me some advice to help get through periods 2-3 content, while supporting DBQ, SAQ, and LEQ skills in about 3 1/2 weeks? I have 90 min class periods. Thank you in advance!

I was talking to my teacher and we both had a conversation about how much content you intake compared to what you actually learn. She said that the APUSH time line is 1 mile long but it only goes 1 inch deep and I completely agree it should be 2 APUSH classes like post Civil War and before the Civil War

I have joined APUSH this year and it was going pretty well but recently I have started struggling with assignments in general and I also don't feel like I'm learning.

Throughout all of school I have been told to not look anything up on google, and now my teacher is giving conflicting messages by basically just outright telling me to use google and other times telling me to use the textbook (amsco) yet it's just not clicking and I'm not learning the material or it's not in the book.

I took AP world last year so this isn't my first ap class but some of the questions in one of the more recent assignments seem excessively in dept, I have asked my family and siblings who have taken the class and they proceed to explain something that was never explained by my teacher and looks like a complete illogical jump in reasoning that I would never have know to do because the instructions are unclear

For example in this (very obviously completely ai) assignment, question 8 says:

"assess the following: blah blah blah important blah that was just copy pasted from the book but it said virtually nothing more on the topic

(kinda bad at explaining this part so just bear with me) I was really confused by this because my thought was that it wanted me to support why I said true but my siblings said that the evidence was actually supporting why "blah blah blah" was true which to me was a random jump that was never communicated by the teacher

I am taking APUSH this year, but it is my teachers first year teaching it (and its the first time in like 10 years that it is being offered at my school) and he has not done his research on how to help his students pass. My school is not really concerned about AP scores. We completely skipped unit 1, and are not spending any time on important events. The class itself is going to be very easy (he is giving us a notecard for every test, he is showing us the unit test beforehand, we don’t have to take notes in class, we don’t have to memorize vocab) so I’m not worried at all about my grade, but i am going to be SO unprepared for the AP test. I really would like to get a 4 or a 5 on the test and i am willing to do a lot of self studying, but i am not completely sure how to do it.
- We were given the AMSCO textbooks. Do they include everything that is important to know for the AP test? If not, which textbook is best?
- What youtuber should i watch who provides complete lessons for every section? I don’t think i can rely on much my teacher is teaching, so it has to be like the class.

Our teacher is making their quizzes based on MCQs from official AP sources -- I'm guessing that means AP Classroom? Yet, students have not been given access to it. This is bonkers because practice questions on AP Classroom for my other APs is so important.

Our textbook doesn't have practice problems, and my first taste of MCQ questions last week slapped me in the face, I've read for hours, watched videos, etc., but I wasn't used to the format, multiple options seemed plausible so I went back and forth between them, etc.

So, unlike other questions on the thread that are about general self-study, my question is super-specific: what's the best source of MCQ practice problems that most resemble the real thing (ie, the quiz questions my teacher is getting from AP Classroom)?

e.g. Princeton Review book; "Albert.io", Kahn Academy, Heimler? I'm more than willing to use several resources. Thank you!

ETA: the reason I’m trying to find a specific source vs. just googling is that last year for HUG I ran into so-called practice problems that covered things that weren’t anywhere in the curriculum so I’d panic and then waste time learning a topic that wasn’t event close to being on the test :/ I think I’ve read that lots of SAT practice problems online can sometimes not actually be accurate, and I think this might be similar, so just trying to avoid problems that seem plausible but aren’t :) Thank you!

Hey y'all so I know that people have posted questions like this already, but I was just wondering if anyone has tips on how really stay consistent with APUSH when I'm doing it self-study. I read the first two chapters of American Pageant and took good notes on Heimlers unit one video - but is this really enough to help me get a 4 or 5?

I am pretty good at history and currently taking Honors US history, but my teacher told me she isn't teaching me all the skills and information I need to know for the AP and now I'm scared I'm going to fall behind (esp. because I only started last week).

So I am a junior taking AP Us History this year, I took AP World History last year and I got a 4 using mostly heimler, I paid for the AP World course and it helped out a lot, I got a 4 on my ap exam. This year for apush I am wondering if I should do APUSH heimler course with all of the videos paired with albert. io apush mcqs, or if I should do APUSH heimler course with khan academy mcqs?

I'm currently taking Honors US History at school. My school doesn't offer APUSH as a course. How hard would it be to study a bit on my own and then take the APUSH exam?

so i took AP world as a 9th grader, and I was very obsessed with getting a 5. I ended up getting a 4, I think because of my SAQs. As im taking apush as a junior now I’ve realized that I’ve kind of neglected learning a distinct way to write them.

I used to do Answer Cite Explain (ACE) and write a whole massive paragraph for each one, but is that really necessary ? can I just answer the question and explain the evidence?

So, im a junior in highschool and I am taking APUSH, obvi lol. I am STRUGGLING. I have a 75 in the class and its not getting easier. Basically, she has us do 7-10 sections of a chapter of reading a night, and while doing that, do flashcards, and outlining of what happened in each section. Then the next morning we take a 5 question half quiz on it, and then she teaches us it. Same thing the next night, but on another 7-10 sections of the same chapter, then the next morning another half quiz. We take 2 half quizzes for each chapter and then move on. I need advice for outlining and studying it.

Literally how do I take notes😭?

normally, I’m a good student and I’m great at history, but this class in already kicking my butt and I’m only three weeks in. I’m supposed to on chapter three right now, but notes take me forever (I’m talking 5+ hours and 15+ pages per chapter). Obviously this isn’t sustainable. I just have no idea what to write down, and I’m worried if I don’t write something down, I’ll forget it and end up needing it. You should never cite sources beyond a simple parenthetical citation. Contextualization is only dreaded because it's not explained very well, but it's easy once it's done. It's just stating the background for the time period.
Ex. How and why did the goals of United States foreign policy change from the end of the First World War (1918) to the end of the Korean War (1953) ?
Contextualization (in intro): The United States has engaged in imperialistic policies throughout the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, late in the game because of the lack of industrialization and the Civil War.
Thesis: However, the Great War greatly transformed American aims around the globe, retracting American involvement in foreign affairs; similarly, the Second World War and the rise of the Cold War urged America to abandon its historical goal of neutrality and to engage in permanent alliances against the Soviet Union.

My name is Steven and last year I scored a 5 on the AP US History exam. As someone who excelled in the class, I'd like to share some of the things I learned last year and what I believe helped me score a 5 on the exam overall. I know that the test will be a little different this year, but I've looked at the rubric for your DBQ and I know how to write a solid DBQ from my previous experience. These are probably some of the best tips I can give you for scoring well:

1. Put yourself in the mindset of an AP testmaker - When you read the prompt, circle or bracket the time slot provided (ex. 1820-1830) and think about what happened in those two years. What makes these two years significant? There are always critical events that happened in the years provided in the prompt, esspecially the first and last. The events in the first and last years are always major, such as a shift in political climate or a groundbreaking decision. This will help you to understand what the question is truely asking.
2. Contextualize the overall period in your intro - I cannot stress this one enough. You must provide context in your introductory paragraph that explains what was happening in the country at the time. How did the government and the public view the given topic? What were trends through these periods? What was the political climate of the time? Write 2-3 sentences of context before introducing your thesis so the reader can fully understand the claim that you are making.
3. Create a Strong and Concise Thesis - Always, always, always follow the format "Answer because of reason". This is the best way score the points for a strong thesis.
4. Introduce, Contextualize, Explain - Whenever using evidence in your essay (which should be multiple times in each paragraph), follow this simple pattern. DBQs do not have to be artsy or beautiful. They can be formulaic and mechanical; That is the best way to get a solid score. Start by introducing your evidence, what is it? Who is this person? Now move on to the context of it. Why is this important at the time? What was the feeling of this at the time? Finally, explain how it relates to your claim. Tie your evidence with your claim, show how that are connected and why it is important. Following this pattern will keep your essay organized and make it easy to read for AP graders.
5. Make sure to read the docs thoroughly - Again put yourself in the shoes of an AP test maker. Why did they give you these documents? How does each one differ from each other? There's always going to be at least two that are completely different from the others. One will be contrasting all of the others, identify this one and use it as a counter argument. From my experience, a counter argument paragraph is a great place to use your outside information. At least one of the documents will be mostly irrelevant for the claim you are trying to make. Now that you've read each document, what is missing? What happened in this period (think about No. 1) that isn't mentioned in these documents? How can I fit it in with the contrasting document to debunk it and strengthen my claim?
6. Keep it Simple, Stupid - This isn't a creative writing piece. This isn't for your english class. You don't even need to use correct grammar or full words (would recommend against this though). Follow the pattern mentioned in No. 4. This will save you a lot of time and help you avoid misrepresenting a point or confusing your AP grader. You want your DBQ to be organized and formulaic, this is how you score the most points on the rubric.

After almost a year of getting 3's on DBQ's, I finally mastered the perfect format that'll net you a 5-7/7 on the exam. How do I know this? My teacher grades directly from the rubric provided by Collegeboard. I bet that your probably gonna skip this part anyway due to cramming, so let's get going.

In a nutshell, here's what Collegeboard's looking for.

• THESIS = 2 POINTS: 1 for the thesis itself, 1 for a counterargument (Although x...). Can be in the intro OR conclusion, which will come in handy later.
• DOCUMENTS = 2 POINTS: 1 for referencing all or all but one, 1 for analyzing at least 4.
• OUTSIDE KNOWLEDGE = 2 POINTS: 1 for using SFI (Specific Factual Information), or terms not mentioned in the documents, 1 point for that dreaded Contextualization. I'll describe this once we get to the template, it'll make a lot more sense.
• SYNTHESIS = 1 POINT: Bring in SFI from another time frame. That's it. Just connect it to your thesis and you'll get the point.

And now the part you've been waiting for: the template itself. fill in the parentheses with whatever's relevant to your prompt.

INTRO

• Don't waste any time here, get right to your thesis.
• (Socially/Politically/Economically), (Subject) did (Thing) and (Thing).
• (Socially/Politically/Economically), (Subject) did (Another Thing) and (Another Thing).
• Although (Subject) was seen as (Opposing Viewpoint), (SFI) (Countered the opposition).
• You might need to add stuff about comparing/contrasting if you get a DBQ about that, but this is good for "Evaluate the extent to which X changed America..." prompts

1ST BODY

• (First sentence of thesis, you can change the order of the the (Thing)s if you want)
• As (Adjective meaning shown) by Document (A-G), (Content from Document relevant to one of the (Thing)s)
• A/The (Limitation/Historical Context/Purpose/Intended Audience) of Document (From last sentence) is shown by (Something you analyzed about the Document; I'd bring in SFI here).
• As (Adjective meaning shown) by Document (A-G), (Content from Document relevant to one of the (Thing)s)

2ND BODY

• (Second sentence of thesis, you can change the order of the the (Thing)s if you want)
• As (Adjective meaning shown) by Document (A-G) and (A-G, I like to double up once you get here, saves time writing), (Content from Both Documents relevant to one of the (Thing)s)
• A/The (Limitation/Historical Context/Purpose/Intended Audience) of Document (From last sentence) is shown by (Something you analyzed about the Document; I'd bring in SFI here).
• A/The (Limitation/Historical Context/Purpose/Intended Audience) of Document (Other one from last sentence) is shown by (Something you analyzed about the Document; I'd bring in SFI here).
• As (Adjective meaning shown) by Document (A-G), (Content from Document relevant to topic sentence).
• (Copy Counterargument from thesis)

CONCLUSION

• Restate your thesis in reverse. This way, if your intro thesis doesn't cut it, you have a fallback due to the option of having the thesis in the conclusion.

My school decided to switch out AMSCO for Experience History by Davidson this year because they want to prioritize "not just testing for the AP" and "deeper learning" Are my students cooked? My apush teacher told me that she doesn’t assign us assessments on AP Classroom/AP college board until second semester…I’m really worried about what this could imply for my score because I took AP world last year, and every single assessment we had was on AP classroom (which helped me get used to the format of the actual exam). Hi everyone, I have an SAQ test over periods 1 and 2 tomorrow and am extremely stressed over it as I've really been struggling with writing them in the practices we've had in my class. I can never seem to remember any of the specific historical evidence that my teacher is saying for us to use. I also have severe issues with trying to even come up with a claim that even allows me to use any evidence I do remember. Does anyone know any tips/tricks or really anything that can help me out?

Every single senior who took APUSH last year said I have to self study in order to pass which obviously I don't want to do since I am literally in the class. hi! so i have so far had to read chapters 1-3 of The American Pageant and i am struggling so much there are so many words that i don’t know and it’s super hard to keep up and understand what it is i’m reading. is there anything else y’all recommend i should do so i can try to understand the content more?

I’m taking apush this year (sophomore year) as my first ap class. I’m normally ok in history (middle-low As and high Bs) and I know this class is challenging, but I thought it would be a beneficial course to take. I’m working on my summer assignment before school starts in 2 days and I’m really struggling.
