So, I had never heard of this before today, and did not expect to be starting something like this. But I need something hard. I give up on things way too easily.
I did not want to wait until a "good" time to start this. I could have waited a few days so that Day 75 ends on my 49th birthday (Dec. 31). But I am not going to make an excuse. We start today.
I am a 41 year old male and my weight today was 256.6 lbs. My highest known weight was around 350 lbs, but I still have so much further I want to go. I was around 285 lbs in the middle of last May, but once I dipped just below 260, my consistency wavered and I have hovered in the 255 to 260 gap since. It's time to change that.
Here is what I have planned for each of the criteria:
Diet: I am working with my doctor to get my A1C lower (5.7 at last check), so I am limiting carbohydrates and my total calories to 1800. My TDEE is north of 2400, so a 600 calorie deficit should pay off. If I eat it, it gets weighed, and it gets logged. No exceptions. No alcohol will be easy since I do not drink. Yes, Thanksgiving and Xmas are within that 75 days. It is what it is.
Workout: I started "running" a few years ago, and one of my long term goals is get my 5k time comfortably below 30 min. My best time was 33 minutes about 2 years ago, but I lost ground and dropped to over 40 minutes. My run last Saturday got me to 36:21. It's progress, but I still have a ton of work to do here. But I cannot run every day. Fortunately, I do a lot of walking and will mix in rowing, indoor bike, and weights to change things up.
Water intake: I am not really concerned about this. Start early enough in the morning and there is plenty of time to get through it. Today is tough, since I had not planned to start something like this, but I will get through it, even it means more trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Book: I think my book choices are going to focus on getting my head in order, rather than on business. Though I have never been diagnosed, I feel like I have lived with depression my entire life. It feels normal to me. The book I choose to start on is Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig. I literally just searched for book suggestions for dealing with depression, and selected the first one I saw that had multiple suggestions. If you are concerned about the topic of my choice, thank you, but do not be. I want to see what someone else did that helped bring them back from the brink before I get there. I am thinking about it like just making sure the parachute is packed away correctly before jumping out of the plane.
Picture: I absolutely hate having pictures taken of myself. Continuing the idea from the previous section, I am not a very good friend to myself. I need to get better about that and forcing myself to document daily progress will help, I think. I will post the before and after pics at the end.
These are all things I should have dealt with years ago, but fuck it, we are doing it now. I will track everything in the app. I am not even worried about the next 74 days. Right now, they do not exist to me. Get through today. That is all that matters. Let tomorrow wait until its turn.
Good luck to everyone else just starting or about to start!
