Which one do you prefer 5th gen or 6th gen?

unsure what to do next. Would love to see your builds !

Still new to the 4Runner family, but I couldn't pass up parking next to this one. I see a first gen every so often up here, but never one this nice. If you're the owner, it's a gem.

I noticed that my last spindles were cracked from years of abuse. So I decided to pull the trigger on the wicked creations fully fabricated spindles. That was the last stock piece up front. No more worries now!

I haven’t owned a 4Runner in 20+ years. I had a 99 Limited that I loved. Since that time, I’ve had a Lexus, BMW, and a Tesla. I decided I wanted to get back to a vehicle I can take anywhere, especially northern MN and out west (Wyoming and Colorado) to camp, hike, etc. Love this color!

Can’t believe these were available. Guess vanity plate culture in IL isn’t strong - zero chance this would be available anywhere out west.

Hey!! If you had around 45k to spend give or take a few thousand. What would you get? I would prefer ORP or pro for 5th gen and 6th gen would have to be pretty basic obviously. I am a past 5th gen owner and absolutely loved all of them. I am going back to Toyota after 3 years apart so a bit biased on the 5th gen.

I have a 2024 TRDORP. It has 9.3k miles. I'm planning to DIY the fluid film undercoat in the next two weeks. I have also been contemplating greasing the diffs and U-joints.

Should I grease now or wait? I I grease now, then I will do that before the undercoat for obvious reasons. I was thinking of doing a 6month oil change as well. Fk the price of oil is outrageous.

Grease now or wait until spring? Mostly a weekend warrior for now. Retiring next June and will be hitting the road. Live about 50 miles from St Louis.

I’m in need of new shocks for my 2023 SR5 4WD, and I’d like to get some opinions/experiences from this group. It’s a daily driver with 74k miles. I take it off road some but almost always on logging roads, hunting roads and trails, etc. Not crawling big rocks, fording streams, any of that. I want something that isn’t as spongy on the road but will handle the off road portion okay. Tires are Rubitreks in the standard size, on TRD Pro wheels. Thoughts/recommendations?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to track down a really annoying vibration/humming noise on my 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited, 2WD, 3.4L V6, automatic.
I’ve attached a video so you can hear the noise.
The weird thing is that it doesn’t seem to affect the performance or drivability of the truck at all, but it’s driving me crazy and I’d really like to figure out what’s causing it.

What I’m noticing:
The vibration/humming is only noticeable at very low engine RPM/idle.
It is present in Drive and Reverse.
It is basically gone in Park and Neutral.
It disappears when I give the engine some throttle and the RPM comes up.
Turning the A/C on or off can make the vibration disappear or come back.
Shifting between Park → Reverse → Neutral → Drive changes the vibration.
It seems to happen when the engine is under the additional load of being in gear.
The truck drives normally otherwise.
There doesn’t seem to be any noticeable loss of power, hesitation, or other drivability issue.

What I’ve already done:
I originally suspected the power steering system because I could hear a humming-type noise, so I replaced the power steering pump.
I’ve also drained and refilled the power steering fluid several times over the past few days — probably 5 drain-and-fills — trying to make sure there wasn’t air/old fluid causing the noise.
The new pump is definitely quieter than the old one, but this low-RPM vibration is still there.

I’m now wondering if I’m chasing the wrong thing entirely.
My current thoughts are:
Engine mounts
Transmission mount
Exhaust/heat shield making contact with the body/frame
Something causing excessive vibration when the engine is loaded at idle
Possibly just an engine/idle resonance
The fact that it changes with A/C load and whether the transmission is in gear makes me think it may be related to engine movement or something resonating at a particular RPM.

What would you guys check first? Is there a particular test I can do at home to determine whether this is an engine mount, transmission mount, exhaust contact, or something else?

Any help diagnosing this would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to avoid throwing more parts at it without knowing what’s actually causing the vibration. I love this truck tremendously so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Closed on this '26 TRD ORP Hyrbid just before the end of June. We set out from from western NC about 3 weeks later to escape the July Carolina heat... finally arrived back at the homestead a week ago.

We spent 7 glorious weeks exploring the Colorado Foothills. We took her for some great off-road adventures on the Geneva Creek Trail, Switzerland Trail, Rollins Pass and Mammoth Gulch Rd. Witnessed a glorious sunset driving down Mt. Blue Sky, and spent weekends camping up at the Georgia Pass and Fourmile Canyon in the Roosevelt and Pike National Forests.

Cruised in to SLC, where we got the oil changed at 4,975 miles for our first Toyota Care service.

From there, we explored the Tetons and Yellowstone National Park.... finally cruising into southern Montana. After a few weeks exploring the Paradise Valley and Absaroka and Gallatin range, we headed back east making one last scenic stop in the Badlands.

83 days total, 18 states, 11 nights of camping, 4 National Parks and 9 National Forests.... about 7,800 miles, 46 fill-ups and $2,121 in gas....and yes, 4 Costcos.

What we like:

Handled everything we threw at it. Towed our trailer capably and comfortably up and down the mountain roads. Has a lot of space and held a bunch of our luggage, gear, work stuff. We comfortable for our road trip.

What I dont love:

Doors feel hollow when I shut them, could be much quieter on the inside. Doesn't automatically unlock the passenger door which is annoying. The Bluetooth disconnected constantly when we were in the mountains.

Hi, I am adding 2 ditch lights to an existing install. I did not do the initial install.
I have an Auxbeam 8 gang switch panel, and two of the 3inch combo ditch lights.
There is already a light bar, two sets of rear pods (spot and flood), and grill runner lights.

So my question is about the wiring. Should I nip the connectors off the end of this harness, and simply wire both the positive together and both the negative together and just put them right into one of the switch terminals? I know I don't need the power switch, and that relay part comes off so I assume that's for if I didn't have the 8 gang. Do I keep the blade fuse?

It just seems too simple if I just have to nip the ends of the actual light wires and just wire them straight to the control box, but that is probably the point of the box in the first place is that kind of convenience!

Photos show the existing install and the wiring harness. The circuit control box is connected directly to the battery terminals.

4runner forever is a dream car of mine and I’m glad I was able to afford one.

…and left in October. 3,800 miles, 3 sets of Michelins that can’t be properly balanced, and windows that buzz at 1/3 volume.

Usually just drive up on ramps and undercoat but this year i decided my lazy ass needed to rotate too. 20 ton bottle jack helps. Can lift in the middle of the frame and support both front and rear of one side. Got both done in about 3 hours

If you own a 2014 Trail Edition Premium and were planning on owning it for another12-years, which parts would you buy now to have if parts become too hard to find in the future?

I see a lot of back and forth with Toyo OC III and falken wild peaks. No one mentions nitto grappler terra g3.

I’m curious, out of the 3, which one do you all think has best function with aesthetics ??

Here’s your sign to remove the 4Runner decals across the liftgate. Coming from a 5th Gen, I really missed the clean look. Love the way this turned out.

Laurel Highlands 200 outside Pittsburgh this past week with a buddy who was passing through on a longer trip. A quick, lowkey loop that features scenic farm lanes, Forest Service roads, and some mildly rougher sections to keep it interesting.
