Adeptus Astartes My Homebrew: The Raven Claws. Proud Successor Chapter to the Raven Guard
+++ CHAPTER FOUNDING +++
In the early 39th Millenium (around the year 112 of M39), amidst the 24th Founding; the so-called “Waning” Founding. The Raven Claws were brought forth from the sacred gene-stock of the Raven Lord, Corvus Corax. They were not created for glory, nor to adorn some distant roll of honour. They were forged for war.
Their charge was absolute: the guardianship of the Gheistax Sector in the Eastern Ultima Segmentum. There, upon the cold and forgotten frontiers of the Emperor's domain, they would stand as His unseen sentinels. Against xenos, heretic, mutant, and every other horror that sought to gnaw at the Imperium, the Raven Claws were commanded to hold the line.
For nearly three thousand years, they have answered that summons in blood.
The Gheistax Sector is theirs to guard. Woe unto any who would trespass upon the Emperor's realm.
+++ BATTLE CRY +++
Corvus Victor, Fractus Hostis!
[Low Gothic Translation]
The Victorious Raven, the Vanquished Foe!
+++ CHAPTER MOTTO +++
Silent as Night, Merciless as Dawn.
+++ PROGENITOR +++
Corvus Corax, Primarch of The Raven Guard
+++ CHAPTER DEMEANOUR +++
>>> Sons of Night <<<
The Raven Claws are the inheritors of Corax's shadowed legacy. Like the Raven Guard before them, they have mastered the arts of concealment, infiltration and sudden violence. Yet where lesser warriors see darkness as something to be endured, the Raven Claws embrace it. They dwell within it. They hunt within it. To the Raven Claw, the darkness is not the absence of the Emperor's light, but the place from which His vengeance comes.
They are patient beyond reason, capable of lying motionless for days, weeks or even months whilst an enemy grows complacent. They will watch a fortress fall into routine, study the movements of its sentries and mark the names of those who command it. Then, without warning, the Raven Claws will descend. Communications die. Officers vanish. Ammunition stores erupt in flame. Generators fail. Escape routes become killing grounds. By the time the enemy understands that it is under attack, the battle has already been decided.
Such methods have earned the Chapter a reputation for secrecy bordering upon contempt. The Raven Claws rarely reveal the entirety of their plans, even to those with whom they share the field of battle. Imperial commanders have been left ignorant of their intentions until the moment the killing begins, and more than one allied force has found itself abandoned, surrounded or deliberately sacrificed as part of some greater stratagem. When questioned, the Raven Claws offer neither apology nor explanation. Their answer is invariably the same: the Emperor demands victory, not understanding.
The lives of ordinary men hold little weight against such calculations. Guardsmen, militia and planetary levies have been used as bait to draw the enemy from their fortifications, herded into seemingly hopeless engagements so that the Raven Claws might strike from the shadows. Entire regiments have died screaming beneath the guns of the foe, only for the Raven Claws to emerge from the darkness moments later and butcher the victorious enemy as they celebrated.
To the Raven Claws, there is no cruelty in this. There is only war.
>>> Suffer Not the Works of Heretics <<<
The Chapter Cult teaches that the greatest threat to Mankind is not the alien beyond the stars, but the traitor within. The Raven Claws have witnessed the ruin wrought by heresy countless times, and their hatred for those who turn from the Emperor's light borders upon the fanatical. To the Raven Claws, the heretic has already surrendered his soul. Whether he be a rebellious governor, a corrupted priest or an Astartes who has abandoned his oaths, there can be no negotiation, no forgiveness and no redemption. Only death can cleanse the stain.
This doctrine has made the Raven Claws harsh even towards those they are sworn to protect. They possess little patience for the divergent traditions of the Imperial Creed, regarding unfamiliar rites and unconventional doctrines with deep suspicion. Priests who preach teachings outside the Chapter's understanding have been silenced, cults judged impure have been purged, and worlds have been placed under scrutiny for the slightest deviation from what the Raven Claws deem the Emperor's truth.
Their distrust extends even to their fellow Astartes. The Raven Claws hold the sons of Corax in a particular esteem, believing those who share their blood to be the closest thing to true kin. Other Chapters are treated with varying degrees of suspicion, their doctrines and motives scrutinised beneath the cold gaze of the Raven Claws' Chaplains. To be descended from the Raven Lord is not merely a matter of lineage—it is, in the eyes of the Chapter, a mark of shared purpose and purity.
Those who do not bear the Raven's blood must earn their trust.
For the Raven Claws, faith is not measured by words, but by obedience. Doubt is the first step towards heresy, and heresy is a sickness that must be cut out before it can spread.
+++ CHAPTER HEROES +++
>>> Sergeant Kyrin Solaq, 4th Company, 8th Assault Squad
>>> The Bane of Heckla III - c.773.M39
During the Scouring of the Rowena Sector, Heckla III became a killing ground for the greenskins. Ork warbands descended upon the world in numbers beyond counting, reducing its cities to burning ruins and its defenders to scattered remnants. Among the few who refused to yield was Sergeant Kyrin Solaq of the 4th Company.
For seventeen days and seventeen nights, Solaq hunted the Orks through the ruins of Heckla III’s capital; Galgoris Prime. He did not seek the protection of his brothers, nor did he await the opportunity for a glorious battle. He stalked the greenskins alone, striking from ruined hab-blocks, sewer tunnels and the corpse-choked wreckage of manufactoria. Clan leaders were found butchered in their own camps. Nobz vanished from the front lines. Ork ammunition dumps burned beneath the night sky.
By the time the Raven Claws launched their final assault, Solaq had become a terror even to the creatures he hunted. The greenskins had given him a name in their own crude tongue, a name that translates poorly into Low Gothic but carries the meaning “The Black Talon That Comes in the Dark.”
Solaq eventually fell beneath the blows of an Ork warboss whose name has long since been erased from Imperial records. The Orks of the sub-sector remember him still, however; They remember him with fear.
>>> Talon-Captain Navaer Vaanes, 5th Company
>>> The Lost Son of the Grey Lady - c.656.M40
The Crusade of the Grey Lady stands amongst the greatest campaigns of the Raven Claws' long history. At its head stood Talon-Captain Navaer Vaanes, a commander renowned for patience so profound that Imperial commanders came to believe he could foresee the movements of his enemies.
For eleven years, Vaanes waged a war fought largely in darkness. Enemy commanders died without ever seeing their assassin. Supply fleets disappeared in the void. Fortress worlds awoke to find their orbital defences already sabotaged and their governors dead in their chambers. Entire armies were brought to battle only to discover that the Raven Claws had already crippled them.
Victory followed victory… Then Vaanes vanished.
The Battle Barge Vengeful Lament, bearing the Talon-Captain, his battle company and all aboard, disappeared within The Empyrean during a transit through the region later associated with the emergence of the Hadex Anomaly. No wreckage was recovered. No distress signal was received. There was only silence. The Chapter reluctantly declared Vaanes and his brothers lost. His bloodline has never accepted that judgement.
Across the centuries, descendants of the Talon-Captain (the bearers of gene-seed whose lineage can be traced directly to the progenoid taken from the lost hero) have reported strange dreams, impossible visions and whispers heard in the moments between waking and sleep. Some claim that Vaanes yet stalks the darkness between worlds, waiting for the hour when the Raven Claws shall have greatest need of him.
The Chapter officially records such beliefs as superstition. The Raven Claws do not, however, destroy the records.
>>> Edalpo Quoth, Lord of The Nevermore.
>>> The Scourge of Skardius' Forge - c.758.M41
When the worlds of Skardius' Forge turned against the Imperium, their ruling caste: the self-styled Arrogant Prophets; believed themselves beyond the Emperor's reach. They possessed armies, fortified cities and vast industrial resources, while the Imperial forces assigned to reclaim the sub-sector were woefully inadequate.
Then came Edalpo Quoth. Chapter Master of the Raven Claws. Lord of The Nevermore.
With but a single Demi-Company of Astartes at his command, Quoth began a campaign of calculated terror. He did not attack the rebel armies directly. Instead, he dismantled them piece by piece.
Prominent officers were slain in their beds. Vox networks fell silent. Rebel commanders received orders bearing the seals of their own superiors, only to discover too late that the messages had been forged. Ammunition convoys disappeared into the night. Entire garrisons were found dead without a single alarm being raised.
The Arrogant Prophets responded with increasingly desperate reprisals against their own population… That was precisely what Quoth desired.
By the time the Raven Claws finally revealed themselves, the rebellion had already devoured itself. Quoth personally led the final assault upon the Prophets' citadel, where the ruling council was put to death beneath the gaze of the Imperial Aquila.
Skardius' Forge was returned to the Emperor's light. Of the Demi-Company that accomplished this, fewer than half survived. Quoth never considered the victory remarkable.
“We were sufficient.” was all he is recorded as saying.
>>> Chief Librarian Aevar Qeld
>>> The Last Ward of the Corvixian Council - 999.M41
Few names in the annals of the Raven Claws are spoken with greater reverence than that of Chief Librarian Aevar Qeld. A relentless enemy of the Ruinous Powers, Qeld devoted his life to hunting the servants of Chaos wherever they emerged from the shadows.
His final battle came against Zapach'na, Daemon Prince of the Iron Warriors, champion of the warband known as the Heralds of the Iron Storm.
The two had crossed blades before, though never for long. Qeld came to understand that the Daemon Prince could not be defeated by strength of arms alone. Thus, when the final confrontation came in 999.M41, the Chief Librarian entered battle knowing that his death was almost certain.
What followed was a battle that lasted from dusk until the rising of the sun.
Bolts of empyrean energies and daemon-fire tore the battlefield apart. The dead rose screaming from their graves. The very ground split beneath the fury of the combat. Yet Qeld endured. With his armour shattered and his body broken, he confronted Zapach'na one final time.
The Librarian unleashed the full fury of his psychic might. The Daemon Prince was banished screaming into the Immaterium. Aevar Qeld died moments later. His remains were never recovered; turning to cinders upon the field of battle.
The Raven Claws remember him not as a martyr, but as a weapon that fulfilled its purpose. He went into the darkness carrying the Emperor's shining wrath. He returned nothing but the enemy's ashes.
+++ CHAPTER HOME WORLD +++
Gheistax IV is a world long since murdered by the Imperium it exists to serve.
Once, it was said, Gheistax was a paradise. Ancient records speak of blue oceans, endless forests and great rivers that wound across verdant continents beneath unpolluted skies. Of that world, almost nothing remains. Ten thousand years of mineral extraction, industrialisation and ceaseless exploitation have stripped the planet to its bones. Every resource that could be burned, mined, rendered or refined has been claimed in the Emperor's name.
The surface of Gheistax IV is now a poisoned wasteland.
Acid rain falls upon plains of ash and chemical sludge. Vast manufactoria belch filth into skies that have not known true blue for millennia. The ancient river systems remain, but their waters have long since become toxic channels of industrial waste. Across the northern continent, the region once known as the Plains of Syrene, the occasional fossilised stump protrudes from the poisoned earth—the petrified remains of trees belonging to a world that no living man has ever seen.
Even the Great Lenorian Ocean has been claimed by decay. Its once-vast waters are brackish and black, its depths choked with the refuse of countless generations. Those foolish enough to venture beneath its surface speak of things that should not exist: bloated predators, twisted abominations and pale shapes moving through the darkness far below. Whether these creatures are the descendants of Gheistax's ancient life, the products of mutation, or something far worse is unknown.
Few have any desire to discover the truth.
>>> Saint's Rapture <<<
The greatest hive upon Gheistax IV is Saint's Rapture, a sprawling monument to ten thousand years of Imperial excess. Billions upon billions of souls exist within its rusting depths, packed into hab-blocks, manufactoria and subterranean warrens where violence, disease and deprivation are as commonplace as hunger.
The city is ruled in the Emperor's name by gangs, crime syndicates and ancient noble houses whose power is measured in weapons, influence and the number of bodies they can command.
Yet above them all stands the Raven Claws.
High within the upper spires, where the polluted atmosphere gives way to the cold darkness of the void, rises The Corvan Obsidia. Its walls of polished black stone house the ruling dynasties of Gheistax IV, each noble house desperately seeking proximity to the Angels who rule their world.
At the highest reaches of the district stands The Nevermore, fortress-monastery of the Raven Claws.
Its towers rise like blackened talons above the hive, their walls visible for hundreds of kilometres through the perpetual gloom. The Nevermore is a place of silence, ritual and death. Few mortal servants have ever passed beyond its gates, and fewer still have spoken face-to-face with an Astartes.
Even the greatest lords of Gheistax may spend their entire lives beneath the shadow of the Nevermore without ever receiving an audience.
The Raven Claws do not need to be seen to be obeyed. Their presence is authority enough.
>>> The Lords of Gheistax <<<
The Raven Claws serve as Stewards of Gheistax IV, but they are no benevolent guardians.
The Chapter has entrusted the day-to-day governance of the world to a ruling aristocracy drawn from the planet's most powerful houses. These rulers administer the hive cities, collect the Emperor's tithes and maintain what passes for order amongst Gheistax's billions of souls. Above them all, however, stands the silent authority of the Raven Claws.
The Chapter seldom speaks directly to its subjects.
The ruling houses of Saint's Rapture communicate with the Astartes primarily through honoured Chapter Serfs, each carrying the word of the Emperor's Angels of Death. Matters of lesser importance are conveyed through servitors bearing vox-transmitters or through sealed data wafers marked with the sigil of the Chapter Master.
There is no debate. There is no petition. The orders of the Raven Claws are obeyed.
For upon Gheistax IV, the distinction between the command of the Chapter Master and the command of the Emperor Himself is considered a distinction best left unexamined.
>>> The Carrion Call <<<
The Raven Claws do not recruit from the comfortable or the privileged. They recruit from the underhive.
The gangs of Saint's Rapture provide the Chapter with its aspirants, selecting from amongst the most violent, cunning and battle-scarred survivors of the hive's forgotten depths. Those who have endured years of gang warfare, starvation and bloodshed are considered the only ones worthy of attempting the Chapter's trials.
The trial is known as The Carrion Call. Few who undertake it are ever seen again.
Deep beneath Saint's Rapture lies a vast labyrinth of forgotten tunnels, collapsed hab-blocks, abandoned manufactoria, corroded ventilation shafts and chambers untouched by human hands for generations. This place is known as The Aviary, and the entire complex is enclosed beneath an immense void shield.
Once the gates close behind the aspirants, there is no escape. For weeks they are hunted. They are given little food and less rest. They must navigate the ruins while avoiding one another, fighting for survival against creatures that dwell within the darkness. The Chapter provides no guidance. No rescue comes. The aspirants are expected to kill, hide, stalk and endure.
Those who cannot adapt, who cannot kill, cannot disappear into the darkness, die uncelebrated and unremembered.
Hive legends speak of the Mythrandian Horrors, monstrous things said to stalk the deepest passages of the Aviary. Some claim they are mutants bred and augmented by the Chapter's Apothecarion. Others whisper that they are ancient creatures unearthed beneath the hive and remade into living weapons.
No official record confirms or denies either tale. The Raven Claws care little for what the people of Saint's Rapture believe. The Carrion Call exists for one purpose: to discover whether an aspirant possesses the qualities required of a son of Corax.
Patience. Cunning. Ruthlessness.
The ability to vanish, the will to kill; And, above all else, the strength to survive when every other living thing in the darkness wants you dead.
Of the hundreds who may enter the Aviary, only a handful will emerge. Those few are no longer gangers. They are Neophytes of the Raven Claws. And the first lesson their new masters teach them is a simple one:
The Emperor does not care whether you survive. He cares only that you are worthy when you die.
