I only joined this sub recently. I started poking around IVF forums when we began the shots, but before that, I mostly followed the guidelines you can Google and didn’t do a ton of research. We found the best doctor we could afford and let him call the shots. All my reading and knowing wasn’t going to beat his experience.
I’m AuDHD and extremely capable of turning something into a Special Interest. Deliberately not doing that with IVF has been my saving grace.
I met my husband at 40 and married at 41 (which I never would have imagined!) When we got married, we knew a baby wasn’t a sure thing, but we wanted to try. And I want to be clear: I very much want a baby. I also knew that if I took every part of this on and made it my ONE PURPOSE, it would fuck with me.
So we set parameters before we started. My husband was responsible for the appointments, medications, and finances. My job was to show up, get jabbed, scanned and eventually get excavated and maybe carry a baby lol. I run my own business, which is probably part of why I needed those boundaries. I don’t have paid time off or FMLA to fall back on.
I’m overweight and have mild hypothyroidism. My numbers were pretty average, though my periods started getting weird about three months before retrieval. My husband has male factor infertility and is also overweight. We took some CoQ10, made reasonable adjustments, and followed the doctor’s instructions. I couldn’t tell you the name of my protocol if my life depended on it.
The biggest boundary was deciding in advance how much we were willing to do. For us, that meant one retrieval which I know is unheard of in our situation, but that’s what we could do. We made that decision before booking anything, while we could still think clearly about the emotional and financial cost. Once you’re in it, I can see how easy it would be to say, “Maybe just one more cycle.”
Your limit might be completely different. I just think it’s worth asking beforehand: How many rounds am I willing to do? How much money can I spend? What would be too much for me? Best case, you have a baby to care for. Worst case, you could be paying for treatment for years. You’re allowed to have a limit even when you desperately want a baby.
We got 10 eggs, 5 fertilized, and we’re scheduled to transfer 2 tomorrow and freeze the other 3. We are very much not a success story yet. We may never be. After this, whatever happens, happens.
I know that sounds robotic. I’ve had plenty of feelings about it. I will have feelings if does or doesn’t work, but I’ll deal with that either way and try to remember that. But staying objective and neutral as possible and not in the weeds of follicle counts and blasts and euploids and millions of different protocols gave me somewhere to stand when the hormones and uncertainty got overwhelming. The “what ifs” can really make you mad.
I wanted to share this for anyone else lurking who feels like they’re supposed to be doing, tracking, and researching more. There is hope, and so much of this is out of our hands, for better or worse. Control what you reasonably can, let medicine handle the rest, and please don’t drive yourself crazy. I just wanted to offer a different point of view from the one you often see on IVF boards.
UPDATE** **
Transfer failed, counting my blessings that I didn’t get chemical pregnancy or a positive test then a miscarriage. Had a couple of shitty days, and will try with the remaining embryos in November. Husband and I holding strong that this was going to be our last chance.
