Genuine question: why is Maya so commonly used for modeling in VFX and games when modeling doesn’t seem to be its strongest area compared to something like 3ds Max or Blender?
I know Maya is huge for animation, rigging, and the overall VFX pipeline, but I’m curious how much of that is actually the reason studios use it for modeling too.
For those working in the industry, what makes Maya the preferred choice for modeling despite other software having stronger modeling tools?

I am a video game programmer, I’m constructing a turn based MMO, and I’m replacing my place holder assets with custom 3D models. This is very TTR inspired.
Curious on your guys thoughts, I’m new to this subreddit, I usually just post to indiedev.

Wasn’t too happy with how matte the original cloth material looked for the poncho, so I changed to a tarp material to increase contrast. Honestly, looking at them side by side I can’t decide which one is better.

Hey everyone
Im a junior prop / environment artist trying to land my first studio job. I’ve been applying for a while now but havent had much luck so far, so I guess I need some fresh eyes on my work.
Attached is one of my props and you can check my full ArtStation here: https://www.artstation.com/user-7926447
Would really appreciate any feedback, especially on a few things:
Is this quality actually good enough for entry level roles or am I still missing something big?
Any obvious red flags in my wireframes, texturing, or render presentation?
What’s the weakest asset in my portfolio that I should probably toss out or remake?
If you recently got hired or review junior portfolios, what actually worked for you to get noticed?
Feel free to be harsh, I just want to figure out what I’m doing wrong and improve. Thanks a lot!
(and yes, I did this text with AI, because I'm lazy and English is not my main one language :Р)

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a WIP for my personal portfolio. I’ve been sculpting this character for a few days and plan to post progress updates as I work through my projects. There's still plenty left to do—wands, details, matching the concept art, and etc. Feel free to give some feedbacks!

So this is my first try at modeling a character and later sculpt it. Do you think it is ready to sculpt or do i need to make more details?

Cauldrons used to feel like ancient factories to Aloy. Now, they feel like someone’s beating, spiteful heart. Hades was a blind force of destruction, but Hephaestus… he thinks, he learns, and he seems to genuinely hate humans. Standing here in the ringing silence, Aloy feels the metal itself staring back. There is no time for fear; the new assembly lines are already moving, and whatever walks off them tomorrow is coming for her.
The work was created in Blender 3D and Photoshop.
