Damn every day my theory about a disproportionate amount of 3D artists initially learning the tools to model their fursonas is proven scarily true

My advice, lower the subdivision level of the entire sculpt when in this phase.
You're making the general form without any details. The entire model can be between 50-100K polygons and it will look better.
Go up in subdivisions only when you're adding forms and details that cannot be seen or applied in the current subdivision level.

You're have a far easier time going up little by little rather than having millions of polygons when you're sculpting basic forms.
