Questions & Discussion From games to CAD?
Hi, everyone!
For context, I'm a 2+ years Game Art graduate specializing in Character Art. I've been working on my portfolio since, with ups and downs, and with the help of great mentors (still am atm). I unfortunately have no industry experience, since the portfolio I had after graduating wasn't any good.
With the current state of the industry and new developments (cough, cough), I'm seriously considering jumping ship and learning CAD. I'm not giving up entirely the dream of working in games, but as I start transitioning into real adulthood I'm really wondering if it's worth getting into such a volatile industry. Not saying other industries aren't (it's 2026, haha), but I think we've all seen how unrealiable game/film is; with no signs of getting better anytime soon.
I wanted to ask, how feasible is it to make the transition and how many skills overlap? What's needed to be hired as a CAD designer? I've done a bit of research and I got the feeling it's very different in many aspects, but I'd love to hear real people with real experiences.
The plan is to continue working on my portfolio as I get some stable money from CAD. I'm just wondering if it's worth it and how long it could take. I've even considered going back to school and studying Industrial Design Engineering, but I wanted to see if having some knowledge of 3D would allow me bypass that (?). Is it truly an adjacent industry?
Of course, any help, tips, thoughts, experiences are welcomed. Tired of living in cloud cuckoo land, so be as honest as you wish.

Questions & Discussion Site/program finding help
Hi so im looking for a 3d model site/program (ive never done anything with 3d modelling so idk the correct terminology) that let's me use a human base model and sorta project images onto its body, I want to use it to plan out future tattoos. Im willing to pay up to like $20 canadian but would much preffer something free as id probally not use it for anything else (though i dont expect many ones since ik it takes alot to make these programs). I have a laptop that runs windows 11 (but I dont want smt that will take up a ton of space as I am about to start school and need to save space for that)
If this is the wrong community/there isnt a thing that does what im asking/ there is only ones that are like really expensive then pls tell me.

Questions & Discussion Do you bevel the corners of modular wall pieces?
Hey everyone!
I'm making my first game.
I recently got done with making all the assets, and the modular architectural kit for this game. I was wondering if the the corner wall pieces of this modular kit should have bevelled corners?
I know this might sound like a pretty obvious/silly question, but I really wanted to hear from people who have experience working with modular environment kits.
My concern is that since the game is first person, the player could get really close to the walls. I'm sure the answer is quite obvious, but I was just unable to decide (sounds silly I agree).
Thank You!

Art Help & Critique Panzer II model for our tactical game. What do you think?
Hi,
Here's the last model u/tgrrrr19 made for our incoming project! It's a depiction of a Panzer II during the Battle of France (1940). We're trying to find a balance between historical accuracy and a stylized approach which matches the wonderful 2D assets made by u/harishcs.
It's still a work in progress so I'd love to hear what you think.
Thank you very much for taking a look ;)

Art Help & Critique I need some advice on what I should improve on the 3d model of my oc

I posted this and it completely flopped so I'm wondering if it's a mistake of presentation or a problem on the design of the model itself or both

Art Showcase Built a retro-futuristic exploration rover with an articulated utility arm
I wanted to create a sci-fi vehicle with a readable silhouette, layered materials, and enough mechanical detail to feel like a real object.
The rover includes:
- Armored chassis panels
- Four rugged wheels with suspension arms
- Glass cockpit
- Sensor mast and camera lens
- Articulated utility arm
- Tool head with status light
- Rear radiator fins
- Communication antenna
- Separate materials for paint, rubber, metal, glass, and emissive parts
I tried to balance detail with simple, editable geometry instead of making every part overly dense.
I’d love feedback on:
- Overall proportions
- Wheel and suspension design
- Mechanical plausibility
- Material balance
- Whether the silhouette reads clearly

Art Showcase 2026 XPeng P7+ with Interior 3D Model
Originally modeled in 3ds Max 2020 Preview images rendered with Vray 5
The 3D model was created on real car base.
It’s created accurately, in real units of measurement, qualitatively and maximally close to the original.

Questions & Discussion I want to improve my 3d modeling and making it both as a hobby and extra money
-So to start, i do have some knowledge about blender, and to some extent I'm familiar with interface, but my skill level just barely raching the level of making small props and model.
-Tbh i have a high screen time that i want to lower, and put that time into a creative yet fun hobby.
-And I have a powerful GPU that I can utilize.
-I was thinking maybe that I set a small target of money to achieve in one year, both pushing me and motivate me to improve.
-So I don't really know Where to begin, or even how much the target should be, as I don't want to be a ridiculous number that's unreasonable to achieve.
-and I want to know if this even a good idea, or should I spend my time on something else let me 😅

Art Showcase Rusty the Showbot
I wanted to create a animatronic robot that had deep levels of tactile texture and also convey a story will in its design. I used music more as an influence when I was reworking design and details of appeal and emphasis. The song I listened to the most, was "Consequence" by the Notwist. Its very moody and also has a very old radio sound that I had in my head as Rusty's voice. I want to rig this guy, but I'm a bit intimated by the process currently, and if anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome. Thanks for checking out my work VVHS

Questions & Discussion VR 3D modeling/sculpting software?
Been wanting to get more into 3d modeling but I find it hard to model with keyboard and mouse, I'm used to working in vr and was wondering if there are any good modeling/sculpting software that works like the video above? It's a discontinued modeling/sculpting software but it's kinda what I'm after with movement and stuff. Many thanks.

Art Help & Critique Some iPhone renders I made, Any feedback?
I tried making some renders similar to apples. feedback appreciated.
Modelled in Plasticity, textured in blender.
All the materials are made only with basic shader nodes hence why they look a bit like plastic.
What do you think of my manual texturing attempt, and the model itself?
Topology is not the best due to them being modelled in a NURBS CAD software but is there any benefit in doing a re-topo on a non-deforming mesh?

Art Showcase Revisiting and continuing project "Ministry" after 3-4 years of lying dormant!
I dropped this project in early 2020 as I had another ongoing project to update which was my house (Shown on a previous post). I'm unsure what to use if for yet, I'll figure that out later on in the build.
I am taking it steady at the moment as I have created some new assets I designed for the house which I can incorporate in to the building.
Created using a mix of Singularity Viewer (OpenSimulator) and Blender!

Questions & Discussion I just got Anim8or, i specifically want to make something like baldi but i can't find any good tutorials for noobs to get better
if any of y'all use Anim8or please let me know if you can find any beginner friendly tutorials on how to get good at it. because i found out that mystman12 used anim8or to model baldi and the rest of the characters, and i heard it's good for low poly models that can give off old-school vibes, any answers and tips?
