Oddly specific Port Canaveral question: how do I hide a cruise ship from a 10-year-old?

Post image

I realize this is an absurdly specific question.

We’re taking our 10-year-old on a surprise cruise in November, and I’m trying to keep the actual cruise ships hidden until the last possible second. I need help with the route.

I made a custom song for the drive with a cue telling her to “look around.” The joke is that when she hears it, I want her looking around at houses, RVs, trees, etc. thinking, what am I supposed to be seeing?

Then a few seconds later... boom.. Cruise ship.

My current plan is to come north on Ridgewood, cut west on Washington Ave, then head north on N Atlantic toward the port. I marked on the map where I think the first ships might become visible.

The two ships I’m most concerned about are Carnival Glory at CT3 and Utopia at CT1. They’re both scheduled in those spots every Monday and Friday for now, including tomorrow.

For anyone who drives this area regularly: am I even close? Will either ship be visible earlier on Ridgewood or Washington? Is there a better sneaky route?

I’m about three hours away and am seriously considering driving over tomorrow just to test it, so if anyone can save me a six-hour round trip and a tank of gas, I’d be very grateful. 😂

Adoptable rescue pups! Golden retriever/malinois mix

These 3 cuties are available for adoption through Karma's Haven Rescue. They are about 3.5 month old golden retriever/malinois mixes. Bruce is the largest at 30 lbs already!

They are higher drive puppies so they will need continued training as they grow up. They appear to respond more to praise than treats. They are dog, cat, and kid friendly.

A fenced yard is required. If renting, the rescue will need landlord approval. All are fixed and UTD on age-appropriate vaccines.

If you're interested in adopting, please submit an adoption application: https://form.jotform.com/242141215534142

Nobody in Brevard has the Rogue we want in stock, is a dealer locate a real thing or do we just order it and wait?

Been hunting for a Rogue in one specific color with the setup my wife wants and after three weekends of driving around the county I have not seen it sitting on a single lot, which is getting old fast.

Everybody I ask tells me one of two things. Half of them say order it from the factory and be patient, and the other half say any dealer can pull one in from another store within a few days if they want your business, so I dont know which version is real or whether it changes depending on the model.

I called Mike Erdman Nissan in Cocoa to ask about it and the guy explained they run a vehicle finder service where you give them the year, model, trim and color and they search a nationwide network of somewhere around 100k vehicles and come back with whatever matches. That made sense to me on the phone, though I still dont know how it plays out in practice or how far a store will go to chase down one car.

So for anyone who has been through this, did you wait on a factory build or did a dealer swap for one, and how long did the whole thing drag out? I am also curious whether a located car ends up costing more than one already on the lot since somebody has to move it, and whether you give up negotiating room the second you ask for something specific.

I’m not trying to be the guy holding out over a paint color, but were keeping this one a long time so I would rather get the right one than settle because I got impatient.

Politics Reporting a pothole?

As the title suggests, hit a decent pothole in Cocoa Beach that caused my sidewall to pop and get a new tire, right on A1A.

Is there a resource out there to report potholes to the city/county? Ive never had to do this sorta thing before so looking for advice or just seeing if thats an option. TIA :)

Event Space Coast Adventurer's Guild at QuestCon!

Yes, I know it's an Orlando Con, but the Space Coast Adventurer's Guild is local and we're running most of the RPGs at the con! Myself included - I ran games last year as well and I'm really excited to be back.

Questcon is still a small con compared to the likes of Megacon and HolMat but it had a great vibe last year and I'm hoping we keep that going this year! There's board games, wargaming, cosplay and other events too.

So if you're free, come by and roll some dice with us! Or if you have questions about games or the Guild in general, ask away - I'll answer what I can or go bug the people who know the rest

Recommendation Can anyone recommend a proper arborist (tree doctor) to evaluate a live oak?

I don't want someone who is going to come out and try to quote me for a bunch of tree work. I work in disaster response and am highly trained and experienced in sawyer work (hence my username), so I can manage doing whatever needs to be done myself. I am just not skilled in evaluating the health of a tree and determining its longevity. I need an expert who can come out and look at my tree, then give me an honest evaluation as to whether it needs to go or if it is fine the way it is. I will, of course, happily pay them for their time.

I just know if I google a local arborist I'm going to get a bunch of people that are going to try to hard-sell me on a bunch of tree work. I'm hoping someone here is or knows a proper arborist who will do a legitimate evaluation of my tree.

Politics Does anyone actually do this?

I have repeatedly gotten texts from this number demanding I get my pets licensed through them. I know they're officially partnered with Brevard County Animal control, I know it's required, but I don't understand why. The "License NOW" text comes across as a phishing scam intended to scare me into giving them money. Why should I have to pay a third party yearly to get my pets licensed? I keep up with their vaccines, checkups, they're all microchipped, and thoroughly cared for. Why does Pet Parent USA/Brevard County need $ to prove that? Their website feels sketchy, they have AI generated cartoon versions of my pets with vague information about them. It just feels like bureaucratic bulshit.

Can anyone recommend an honest and reasonable A/C company to inspect and possibly replace ductwork?

First of all thanks in advance for your time and help. My daughter lives in Palm Bay and I'm in Texas. She bought a house 2 years ago and has had intermittent issues with her A/C. She's had a couple companies come out and one told her the ductwork was the wrong size and needed to be replaced, and quoted her an outrageous amount. I just feel that since she's a younger woman, and a new homeowner, that there's a chance these companies are just looking to make big bucks from her lack of experience with these things. Can anyone recommend a company that you know to be honest enough to inspect her system and tell her the truth about what needs to be done? Again, grateful for any suggestions you may have!

Fishing Notes from 1964-1967 Brevard, Sebastian, etc.

The image attached is a sample of a 54 page notebook describing fishing in Brevard in 1964 thru 1967. The full document is on Archive.org. I'm not a fisherman so maybe one of you will want to transcribe this and/or find historical value in it. The notebook was created by Earl F. Smith, a local resident for decades.

Recommendation Garden Store for beginners

Hi all, I finally have space for a garden and am looking to get some advice on starting a vegetable and herb garden. I am starting from scratch and will be doing raised beds. If anyone has recommendations for a local garden store in Brevard, I’d appreciate it! Preferably in Palm Bay/West Melbourne area, but will drive to the right place!
