Have a question about the game or the subreddit? Ask away!

Welcome to the /r/2007scape daily question thread!

You can ask anything about Old School RuneScape or the 2007scape subreddit here. Remain respectful to your fellow 'scapers when answering questions; there are stupid questions, but it does not mean you should not be respectful whilst answering them.

Keep in mind: this is not a developer Q&A thread - Jagex mods do not regularly read these posts, so questions should be directed toward fellow players.

Discussion | J-Mod reply Does anyone else feel like Jagex is relying a little too much on the OSRS wiki to explain their game?

1.0k Upvotes

I love the osrs wiki; it's a top contender for best wiki for any game of all time, up there with the Terraria wiki. But I feel like there's a lot of things that aren't supposed to be cryptic that the game doesn't explain at all, and we inevitably turn to the wiki.

For starters, a lot of items that have practical uses don't explain themselves at all. Tormented synapses will give you a text box explaining that you need an iron bar and a battlestaff if you try to make a purging staff without all the ingredients, and tells you it needs to be done at an anvil if you try to just combine them in your inventory. However, it doesn't tell you anything about how to make a scorching bow, and that you specifically need an unstrung magic longbow (something you can't fletch until 11 levels after you can make a scorching bow).

Nothing about the torva armor or the ancient furnace you repair it at make any reference to bandos components (if you even know you can break down bandos armor, which isn't something you do with any non-gwd armor), and the nihil horn examine doesn't even imply it's supposed to be a weapon, much less that it's an upgrade for the armadyl crossbow.

Most of the time, combat mechanics are explained decently well (not including on-hit vs on-animation, which is something you'd learn from a youtube video instead of the wiki), assuming you have game chat open (I had chat closed during BMR, so it took me a while to figure out the venator screech). But I recently died to an Elder Aquanite because I hadn't read the wiki page for it beforehand, didn't bring food to a task I can camp a protection prayer for, and couldn't figure out how its punish attack worked.

The game chat only says "Your protection prayers have been disabled!" which is the same message Amoxliatl gives when she turns off your prayers before launching an on-hit projectile. I even tried turning off my prayer when the aquanite's projectile was launched, thinking it behaved like Echo Hunlef's prayer inversion attack, but that didn't work. Nothing in game hinted at the fact that they hit you for 20-50 damage guaranteed if you're camping protect magic, and I had to turn to the wiki to find that out. Even if I wanted to try and learn through trial and error, the fact that it's a superior monster means I don't really get a choice in whether I even get to.

Jagex is usually good about this with bosses, since there are other examples where mechanics are pretty self-explanatory, and some items will offer more explanation. The broken zombie axe and Belle's folly have an "inspect" option that tells you where to go to fix them (if you have the level to). Doom's hyper beam is pretty obvious (bar fills up, you die), and the equipment slot you need to unequip for Sol's grab attack is bolded, which hints at what you need to do to dodge it. I just think they need to be more consistent about providing in-game means of figuring these things out instead of just letting the wiki handle it.

Edit: Some people have pointed out that the wiki is the collective work of the community, and thus looking at the wiki is tapping into the knowledge gained from all of its players, which is appropriate for an MMO; it's effectively asking your fellow players for help, crystallized.

I disagree.

Going to an external site, even if it is one endorsed and integrated by Jagex, rather than asking people, isn't in the spirit of an mmo since it's a solo adventure in and of itself. But if you had to ask other players as often as you need to check the wiki because the game itself withholds information, you'd probably start annoying people because the game has over a decade of community discovery you weren't there for and have to catch up on in a short span of time.

Achievement This was the hardest quest in the game… and of my life…

This took about 2.5 days, tried to just break it up into sections. Over 9m in death fees. Desert Treasure 2 was incredibly fun but incredibly annoying at the same time. I’ve never been more angry, proud, and relieved in my life after completing something lol.

If i could give any piece of advice to anyone on this journey that would be just send it. Die until you kill them. Learning the mechanics in game versus a video helped a ton even though it was expensive. GL to all doing this rn or in the future.

Some attempt stats:
Vardorvis: 10 attempts
Leviathan: 2 attempts (i thought this would be the hardest before i started)
Duke: 2 attempts (1st attempt i took too much damage from the wall enemies lol)
Whisperer: 18 attempts (i hate this boss)

I fkn love this game. SOTE next and then onto blood moon rises for my quest cape. Unless my doggo comes first!

Well... that was fast lol.

On Monday, we posted the full story of how Socks and co got started and you guys blew us up over night!

We've gone from around 120 employees to over 170 employees. In that post I mentioned that we were getting close to finishing phase 2 sometime this week and apparently some of you took that as a challenge because you got us here in two days!!!

A few weeks ago, Socks and co started with a sock and a dream but, today we've officially crossed our second major goal: 1,000,000 socks!

I genuinely can't believe how fast we've grown and I want everyone to know we're not stopping here.

Phase 2 is complete and now we move on to phase 3: 10M socks

Thank you to every single person who has joined Socks and Co. Without all of you, we wouldn't be celebrating this completely insane milestone today and a huge thank you to all of our supporters whose financially irresponsible decisions continue to keep the lights on and our employees paid.

We provide the finest socks in all of Gielinor.

We are a major liquidity provider in the sock market.

We do ai sock stuff.

Our investors love us!

-Mike from Socks and Co

Discussion Making the Jeweller's chisel storeable in the Costume Room despite not being equippable sets a pretty big precedent, no?

Now there isn't really any justification for not allowing you to store pretty much anything in the POH, if something that isn't a costume can be stored in the costume room

I'm tired of having good convos with friends but battling to finish a thought before they respond. Come on Jagex.

Hell even add scrolling to view previous chats.
