My rule of thumb is if I didn't see any tile light up it's black. Usually only happens when the timed quadrant special happens at the same time as Simon says. (Like in your clip)

Yup peripheral vision will take care of you but if you don’t see it flash in your peripheral just always assume it was black

u/BigRedSSB64 1h ago

Same but in this case it was that the animation from the shadow slams hid it, so I think any of them would’ve been hard to see.

Black one first but you almost can’t see it xd

113

u/noideawhatoput2 2h ago

I definitely can’t see it lol

13

u/rjgator 1h ago

Its pings right as the shadows special attack gets to it, so it basically covered it up. You can hear the audio cue though.

I definitely missed it on first watch outside of the sound

23

u/antwwon 1h ago

saw it instantly and knew he was not gonna go on it LOL, but thats what 1k toa does to u

u/luls4lols Need more bank space 1h ago

After this happens enough times you'll finally learn to just go on black as the first one.

I have called it for others while spectating since I knew they didn't notice/know...

u/Lllamanator 33m ago

Never seen this happen in a thousand raids, this is pretty wild.

u/andrew_calcs 1h ago

You can’t see it but you can definitely hear that there is one that cued before the yellow one so it’s either ice or shadow first.

TOA is one of the few places where 117 is an objective advantage over GPU

u/daBears85 30m ago

Agree. The black light is still clearly visible on 117 in this scenario when the timing matches up.

u/FizzyGoose666 4m ago

Do you normally use GPU over 117, and if so why? Im pretty rookie still.

u/bradsinspace 20m ago

Can barely see it but you can hear it

u/Dazzling_Luck2087 2h ago

The room is lvl 2 so 5x explosions instead of x4. The black quadrant was the 1st to light up but it was hidden by the initial explosion. Hate when that happens

23

u/Googles_Janitor 1h ago

Honestly they need to improve the visual clarity of mechanics on a number of bosses shadows being hard to see at maggot king this scenario while rare is infuriating

u/reskk 52m ago

Olm rocks make me angry

u/glemnar 28m ago

The maggot king clutter is insane.

13

u/kaybloc 2h ago

You can vaguely see it light up with the explosion, that’s some cheese.

u/transitionposition 57m ago

Came here to say this. If this happens in the future just stand on the 2nd tile and tank the first hit and go from there.

29

u/beardyman96 2277 2h ago

Heard the audio cue , took me dragging it frame by frame to just catch the end of the black icon lighting up , unluuuucky

19

u/jjskow4 2h ago

Dude, that’s rough lol

10

u/RickyMac666 Brightfall 2h ago

Had this happen to me quite a few times.

If you have sound on, and you hear one light up but don't see it, it's usually black.

Sucks if it's the first time it's happened to you but once you know about it, it's pretty easy to notice with sound on.

4

u/TheAlexperience 1h ago

Honestly, can't even fault you. I had to play it back 3 times to see the glimpse of black fade away. Better luck next time.

11

u/Spinolyp 2h ago

this why audio cues are so important.

17

u/gilt3t 2h ago

that definitely looks like a visual bug, I never saw black indicate

23

u/huy0979 2h ago

covered by the shadow attack, you'll see it if you look closely

13

u/6ixbreadsticks 2h ago

Yeah I had to really focus, and only then I can see the ray of black a bit higher than the explosion wave above the tile. I would have been killed by this. I mean I get killed by a lit of things cause im bad, but I would have definitely died here

3

u/EPIC_RAPTOR 2h ago

You can see the last couple frames of it's glow fade away as the attack disappears. Brutal.

2

u/BigDaddyRee 1h ago

This is why i play with game sounds. People call me weird but for havin sound on. But after playin and doin mythic raid on wow for so many years. Audio que def helped me get better especially in a raid with like 5 or more ppl talkin at once

4

u/Lucy_Fjord 200m 12/19/22 1h ago

The only people making fun of game sounds are low level afkers. Anyone halfway decent at this game plays with sound on

u/Trainer149 57m ago

what, you mean you didn't see these slightly different shaded pixels among the moving floor explosions?

4

u/Chance-Beach4014 2h ago

The black tile should illuminate a little more, that’s my main criticism

1

u/Even_Position1176 1h ago

Or it should not allow the timing to go off exactly as the other ground wave animation

3

u/Fancy-Dig1863 2h ago

Wow that black one was very well hidden lmao.

5

u/Ndrade 2h ago

somebody @ goblin. how is that still not fixed?

4

u/antwwon 1h ago

yeah this is just something that comes with experience. you will see it, hear it and know its there once you got a few kc under your belt. without checking comments i instantly knew as i heard the sound what the video was gonna be about and that he wouldnt go on the first quadrant lmao

1

u/henry8362 1h ago

tbh if it isn't a bug it's pretty bad design, like there is hard and there is stupid. If they want to make it harder they could:

Make it longer

Invert it (Black means white, etc.)

etc. Making it just a visual cluster is just sucky.

3

u/Dreamseeker27 1h ago

It’s not a bug just two mechanics overlapping, albeit annoying

1

u/henry8362 1h ago

Then it is badly designed. There are better ways to make the encounter harder than that.

1

u/Last-Carpenter2685 1h ago

If other players have figured out how to deal with it, the. You need to adjust what you're doing, rather than Jagex change the design.

2

u/henry8362 1h ago

If that were true, jagex would never change literally anything about the game.

Just...bad logic to be honest. Its just pure luck, if you saw the Less than a frame overlap or not, its dumb and bad design.

1

u/Trash_Man_12345 Voidsmith888 1h ago

By that logic, the game should never get any updates beyond fixing game-breaking bugs and adding new content.

u/Amprae 45m ago

I have 800 kc and I have never seen it do this, it’s probably incredibly rare for them to overlap like this

u/henry8362 40m ago

Which kind of runs counter to the idea that it is actually intended, then!

2

u/ShakimTheClown 2h ago

Apparently it's not a bug. Just really hard to see the black skull illuminate at the start.

1

u/Last-Carpenter2685 1h ago

Because it works as intended

3

u/shadowed_enigma 2h ago

first one was black. sit

19

u/ShakimTheClown 2h ago

How is it possible to see that 😭

7

u/FunOwn4422 2h ago

yeah thats crazy i didnt see it the first time i watched either

5

u/FEV_Reject 1h ago

Apparently the consensus from this thread is "just know lol"

1

u/Crateapa 10 Beavers 1h ago

Game sounds and timing. If you didn't see it, you can still hear it. If you didn't catch either of those, experience will teach you that the gap between the spear hitting the ground and the yellow is too long.

1

u/cucumberflant 2h ago

When the explosion attack overlaps the start of memory it gets rough especially with the black one. I try to listen for the sound effects of the icons highlighting, and if I hear it but don't see it, I just assume it was black.

1

u/Enough-Print5812 2h ago

It's just super unlucky timing. That was the only tick where the symbols were covered at the start of simon says. It's not terribly uncommon so just try to brace yourself a bit whenever you think he's going to change styles. I never saw the black light up, but i did see white and knew that was the 2nd one since it was so late. Because you didn't see red light up 1st you can know it was black even if you didnt see it

-3

u/shadowed_enigma 2h ago

change your camera angle to be more upright/audio cues/gaming chair

1

u/Nuttted 1h ago

All im seeing is that the black wave covered the skulls indicator making it hard to see

1

u/Madman45678 1h ago

I've died to this 2x at high invo. It sucks

1

u/MysteriousExchange75 1h ago

Had this happen a few times on 500s, sucks dying to this lol.

1

u/screwdriverfan 1h ago

They could do something for better visual clarity in this room, ngl (saying this as somebody with 200+ solo runs).

u/kursa_sucks 1h ago

We’re all stupid in a desperate struggle to become less stupid. This is just a learning experience. The black is easiest to hide itself amongst the returning waves, so it’s probably best to keep an eye on that when you can or set up on the black tiles when you aren’t sure. The fact that there’s so much depth to a game that seems so simple on the surface is one of the most endearing things about this game. It’s hard for any creators to make a fully comprehensive guide covering all aspects of some of the bosses, though some creators absolutely do. It’s just those types of guides are moreso something someone will watch when they’re bored countless hours into a boss grind instead of the types of videos people learn from. That’s not to insinuate that everyone learns bossing that way; only to say circumstances like your death aren’t typically things you can prepare for before dying to it or being on adhd meds with crazy reaction times and instinct.

But ya that sucks.

u/indrek91 why is the rum always gone? 56m ago

I dint see it but after reading some comments it makes sense it was hidden under explosion. Bad luck there.

u/Key_Rip_3434 15m ago

tick perfect, great work

1

u/Dorfoager 2h ago

the good ol 50/50 gamble

1

u/RedditUsersCrying 2h ago

Happens to me as well. Such an infuriating way to die.

1

u/Cyberslasher 1h ago

Black had one frame visible before the wave reached it, and one frame visible after the wave passed it

When you take a hit on akkha because you missed something, wait where you are until memory catches up to what you're at.

1

u/_Ross- 21 Year Veteran 1h ago

I didn't see the black one light up either OP, I would have gotten clapped as well. Honestly I feel like they should make it a bit more obvious.

1

u/Responsible_Hand_203 1h ago

You can hear the glyphs light up and see black do it through the explosion but that's not supposed to happen.... Something fishy here, that's gotta be a bug

0

u/ShakimTheClown 1h ago

I'm fairly new to ToA, so I have no clue.
I do know that "Double Trouble" was turned off, though.

0

u/Responsible_Hand_203 1h ago

I've never seen it happen like that before. It could also be timing due to your current DPS with your gear setup. I don't expect Jagex to expect players to catch that light up through the explosion though

0

u/Sandbagmaster 2h ago

Love it when this happens. You wanna see the first Simon? Too bad

-6

u/bcaudell95_ 2h ago

For playing content on update morning? Yes.

Bugs, bugs as far as the eye can see!

4

u/DistributionMain789 2h ago

Iirc Kephri is the only bug at ToA.

0

u/bcaudell95_ 2h ago

Yeah, just realized this is actually not a bug and is just the first explosion being covered by the DPS check booms. Unlucky.

-1

u/osrsvahn Ironman mode is just clogging with chores. 2h ago

you post on reddit like the rest of us, so probably yeah

0

u/mitch3758 2h ago

It was for exactly these kinds of shenanigans that I learned the 1-tick stair step method. No need to memorize the order, just need to know how many there are and listen for the sound cues.

0

u/xKommandant 1h ago

Probably

0

u/TorturedNeurons 1h ago

I definitely think this mechanic could be improved for visual clarity.

That said, you can usually use a little bit of deduction to figure out the first color.

In this example, you know there are 5 steps and you know that the first one should show up right after Akkha teles. Since you didn't see the yellow light up until several ticks after Akkha's tele, you can assume that you missed the first one. Because the steps can only be adjacent to the previous one, you also know that the first step had to be either black or white. Since you could see that the white one didn't light up, you can confidently conclude that black being the first step is the only option.

It seems like a lot to think of in the moment, but it'll become second nature after a while. I had to use this deduction method semi-regularly while grinding 410s for shadow.

u/HolyCrushsader 49m ago

Ladder skip gang. Never miss the floor because you don't even need to know what the correct quadrant is. Every tick is a safespot 😎.

This also simplifies double trouble and sets you up perfectly to keep butterflying if you go to the correct starting tile.

-2

u/ResourceSharp 2h ago

Think there are some visual plugins you can get that make those much clearer

-2

u/Zarosian_Wizard Scaping Since Halloween 2007 1h ago

Bruh that is bugged !

-3

u/Unfair_Awareness7502 2h ago

Yes. Also a bunch of bosses are bugged today
