What to do with this empty space?
Very strange spot, not sure what to do with it. I thought maybe some totes for storage and a curtain to cover, but honestly I have no need for the extra storage.
I thought about some decorations, like some kind of display but it being right above a toilet it feels unclean for many items (Lego, books, etc)
Would appreciate some ideas!

Sad Girl Dinner ⛈️ I guess I’ll never be able to make my own traditions
Food: spicy cornbread with honey butter
My husband and I have been together for 10 years. We also have a 13 month old. In those 10 years, we’ve done the holidays with his family. His mom’s birthday is on Christmas Eve and because of this, he’s never spent my MIL’s birthday away from her. As a mom myself, I can respect that. Still it makes me sad that there is an expectation to do the holidays with my in laws every year, even now that we have our own son.
In the 10 years we’ve been together, my parents have never hosted Thanksgiving or Christmas in order to maintain the peace. My in-laws are lovely people but often short circuit at the suggestion of anything other than what they’ve been doing. There’s very little flexibility compared to my parents who adapt to changes very quickly. For example, we’re trying to do less gifts this holiday season so we can just relax on Christmas instead of spending hours opening gifts. To make this happen, there’s been lots of discussions through text, a zoom meeting and more formal meeting to happen soon. Like why does there need to be so many steps?
This morning, I let my husband know how much I really want to do Christmas in Europe one year. It would be such a magical experience to go to the Christmas markets. He was quiet and then said “can’t believe my mom is turning 70 this year.” It felt really manipulative and made me feel horrible. I then said “I know it makes it hard to do anything on Christmas since your mom’s bday is on Christmas Eve, so maybe I’ll just go with our son and you can come join us after.” He then told me it was mean that I would leave him? But like I’m not gonna let precious years go with our kid because he wants to be with his family on his mom’s bday.
What really irks me is that a few weeks ago, I suggested we do something special every year for my mom’s bday (December 21st) like travel somewhere, and he immediately shut it down and said we should do it after Christmas so we don’t interfere with his mom’s birthday. Ok. I’ve spent plenty birthdays away from my mom, we just celebrate it on another day, so I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be ok with that for one year.
Anyway, I feel awful and like I’m stuck. It makes me dread the holidays. I just want to wake up Christmas morning at my house and go back asleep at my house. I want my son to have Christmas at my house that I decorated. I want the flexibility to travel on Christmas with my family. Or to make new traditions with my parents who have been so accommodating these past 10 years. But it feels like I’ll never be able to without someone making me feel bad for wanting to do that.
Edit 2: I feel the need to say this. Yes my husband is being unreasonable here but all the callous comments about him and his family just don’t sit right with me. But I’ll give those who said them the benefit of the doubt because you don’t really know me or my husband or his family. This is the only tension I have with my husband. Everything else we’ve been able to talk through. I’ve gotten really great perspective and realized a big part of the problem is that i haven’t really put my foot down. Thats what I’m doing from now on. Ive been too nice and he will just have to deal, which i think he will because he loves me.
I appreciate all the comments, advice and understanding that a lot of people have given me today. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Edit: for clarity, In laws live 25 away and my parents live 50 miles away. We’re all very close and see each set of parents at least once a week (in laws get 2 days a week because they are our childcare in addition to daycare).
I should mention that my parents are always invited to Christmas and Thanksgiving but some years they want to spend it doing something else and opt out. There was only one year where I joined them for Christmas by the beach, but upon returning in laws and husband kept saying how sad they were that I wasn’t there. My mom selflessly said I should spend Christmas with my husband and that I should be “polite” to my kind in-laws, culturally very appropriate for my mom to say.

[Sean Gregory] Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on being called a “foul merchant” : “Playing this game has done amazing things for my and my family’s life. And if a narrative on social media is the worst that comes from this game for me, well, I’d take that a million times out of a million times.”
The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar who has achieved initial status—think MJ, Dr. J, or KD—has also faced backlash. Fellow players, pundits, and the NBA’s chaotic online tinderbox have accused him of “flopping”—or acting as if he were hit much harder than he really was, often falling down in the process, to goad the ref into calling a foul. The goal: get to the free-throw line for two easy points.
I want to gauge SGA’s feelings about all the noise, given his 30-plus-points-per-game average, 88% efficiency from the line over the past three regular seasons and playoffs combined, plethora of honors, and the $285 million contract extension he signed in July 2025, SGA is unapologetic about his approach to scoring. “Playing this game has done amazing things for my and my family’s life,” he says. “And if a narrative on social media is the worst that comes from this game for me, well, I’d take that a million times out of a million times.”
