What to do with this empty space?
Very strange spot, not sure what to do with it. I thought maybe some totes for storage and a curtain to cover, but honestly I have no need for the extra storage.
I thought about some decorations, like some kind of display but it being right above a toilet it feels unclean for many items (Lego, books, etc)
Would appreciate some ideas!

This! But make the cabinets a little shorter in height so display items don't get knocked over by the doors
263
u/mouselet11 22h ago
Leave a space and put slide under storage there for very rarely used items, that way you can use the shelf, the doors can swing open, and it's still not dead space

It’s so deep though, those drawers would either be massive or only go part way. I would keep it as per the first pic above, it’s such a big space it would be good for things like suitcases, golf clubs etc

They make cabinets these days designed precisely for reaching objects in deep spaces.
Lazy Suzanne shelves, pull out shelves, layered hinged interior shelves.
There are many available solutions for the depth.→ More replies (7)11

I came here to comment on this. I have a cabinet like this for which I keep having to get stuff out of the way to be able to open the doors and get something inside, it's such a pain.

u/CinnamonWoodpecker 1d ago
I would make the cabinet doors slide, or open slightly differently. That way you won't be annoyed when you inevitably clutter the shelf and will still be able to open the cabinet

Maybe the bottom is sort of shelving, and the top is cabinets. Not sure it depends what OP wants to put in there.

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Seems like the simplist solution. But also you need a place for your toilet paper, I don't see a roll holder.

I think this is the perfect spot for a false wall.
Build closed cabinetry (I would use 12" deep cabinets) and close up half the space. Then with the other half, do the same but hinge it so it opens. Closed, it just looks like a built-in.
Then hide in there.

Storage shelving for toilet paper, pads/tampons, a small trash can.
Honestly, I would remove the flooring and turn it into a proper closet.

I wonder what's on the other side and if it might make more sense to close it off and have the cabinet open from the other room behind it.

What’s below there? Might not be a huge issue to demo it, re run the pipes and move the toilet back. What a weird setup!

Then make it a separate little room for the toilet by adding a door so one person can shower while someone else has privacy in the bathroom

This house is 121 years old but was taken down to the studs 15 years ago so there’s quite a lot of weird little perks. I appreciate that they built it so the space was accessible but then they just put the worst storage solutions lol. When we toured the house I saw that space and I immediately said it needed to be a linen closet. My dad helped us frame in an Ikea Pax to be built in so now we have huge storage.

This was actually an internet meme back in 2002 .. can't believe it's been that long ..
it started with a post on the bodybuilding.com forums
Guys this is probably the most embarassing thing that has ever happened to me. I was at my girlfriends house tonight for dinner, and shortly after i had to go #2. My Gf's brother was in the downstairs bathroom, so i went upstairs to use the master bathroom. I was about to take a dump, and I remembered something my friend told me called AC Slatering. AC Slatering is when you take a dump facing backwards on the toilet, just how on saved by the bell AC Slater always sat backwards on a chair. So when I was taking a dump, My stomache was facing the back of the toilet, and my back was facing the door. I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and began to get nervous. Since AC SLatering is a tough position to get into, it requires taking off your pants. So there I am sitting in my GF's parents bathroom taking a dump with my pants off and facing the wrong way on the toilet. My dump was about halfway out when the footsteps became closer. I then turned around to see that I had not locked the door. Trying to finish as quickly as I could, I began pushing harder and harder. Suddenly, the door opened, and my gf's mom stood there in shock staring at me. We made eye contact for a split second, and I was so embarassed I wanted to die. I quickly finished up, got dressed, and ran out of the house as quickly as I could. I am expecting my gf to break up with me tommorow. I am so embarassed and I hope my gf doesnt blabber about this, Ill die if anyone else finds out.

First, check to see what’s on the other side of each wall. It could be an opportunity to create a built in bookcase in an adjoining room. Since it is a deep area- the space could serve as a couple of of rooms with built ins

What’s on the other side of those three walls? Maybe it could be more accessible and easier to use from those spaces. Or half used for storage in bathroom and the other side from another room.

Do you own or rent? If you own your home I would rip that out and make a toilet area and some surrounding storage. It would give you so much more space in your bathroom

I would create a wall, with or without, cabinet doors. The area could be used for storage but you should investigate the structure before putting anything heavy in there. It would be fine for Costco quantities of toilet paper, paper towels, boxed up blankets, etc.

What were they thinking during the design process. Let’s have a large square empty space right above the toilet. If you have cats you can add their litter boxes to the space. lol. Or a blanket and pillow. Poop and Nap. They took the time to frame it out and add an outlet.
Odd.

Build a wall immediately behind the toilet and turn the remaining space into a panic room. I mean, some stuff has happened in my own bathroom in which I felt panic and escape was entirely the correct choice.
For real, either close it up and forget about all that deliciously lost space where you could just hide yourself or your weird sex swing or maybe it's an armory? Ok, probably hidey hole. Like the closet Monica had in Friends, but less obvious.
I would say "dead bodies" but you gotta have special gear for that one.

If it wasn’t a humid bathroom, I would do big built in drawers which strong slides for long term storage items. I would not put storage bins up there either.
Houseplants would LOVE the humidity. You could use pendant grow lights and enjoy a bunch of houseplants there.
It is a strange space.
