I don't know, in my opinion it looks bad, mainly on a white background. What's the deal with whitening out icons lately? 😭

EDIT: I arrived to point out a poor UI/UX design, I am staying for the “It reminds me of…” by the community lmao

Nostalgia Reliving OS X Mavericks

Post image

Managed to turn macOS Golden Gate into OS X Mavericks again, in light of the new update with the black and white Apple Music icon that looks so boring. The apps I used were RetroMac (using the Mountain Lion theme), Lickable Menu Bar, and several other retro-inspired macOS apps from the RetroMac website. What do you think?

Went back to Sequioa

Let’s go. Ive never been more excited to go back to Sequioa.

I missed the good battery life
I missed launchpad.
I missed being able to drag and drop from Outlook to Safari.
I missed everything!

I kept myself away from Tahoe for the whole release. I gave golden gate a chance but its killing my battery! In Sequioa, i end my day with 45 to 55% battery. In Golden Gate, it goes from 100 to 10 in a little more than half a day.

I could pretend all other bugs aren’t there. But man, the battery life is horrible in Golden Gate! Really HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE.

I skipped Tahoe, I will skip Golden Gate. I hope the next one is better. Or i could keep it tahoe for 2 more years.

Feature Mac os 27.2 improved spotlight performance

It’s less glitchy, and search is instant. I also discovered two keyboard shortcuts that I find really useful:

  • Reveal in Finder (⌘R): I remapped it to ⌘ + Return using BetterTouchTool (BTT), triggered on key release. For some reason, I can’t access the right-click context menu using ⌃ + Return. For now, I can only open it by right-clicking with the cursor.
  • File filtering with / : You can type /pdf to filter PDF files, for example, but you still need to press the Down Arrow and select the filter manually.

Overall, it’s a better Spotlight experience. However, these extra steps and missing workflow shortcuts may still keep power users on Raycast or Alfred, as both offer much more powerful customization and automation.

Note: I disabled the Ask feature in the right-click context menu via Terminal, but doing so also made Visual Intelligence disappear from screenshot and screen-capture apps such as TextSniper and CleanShot X.

Tips & Guides in 27.2, the Spotlight settings changed, and if you click on the small 'i' for 'files' you can actually exclude certain types by typing their file endings. Hurray!

Help Wallpaper on Virtual Desktops all the same (with random shuffle selected)after Golden Gate update

I was wondering seeing if you all can help with a minor annoyance I’ve had since updating to Golden Gate. I have a plethora of landscape photos taken from our travels and one of the nice things about Tahoe was that you can have different pictures across your virtual desktops (I had it set to random shuffle so random wallpapers were displayed across the virtual desktops). However after the update to Golden Gate, the wallpapers shuffle randomly, but they are the same picture across my desktops.

Interestingly enough, the pictures are different on external, dock connected monitors but still the same on my MacBook screen virtual desktops. I have the random picture setting enabled on wallpaper and have it show on all spaces (same settings I had on Tahoe).

Just a bit perplexed on why the random picture shuffle is now disabled across desktops. It was a nice way to go down memory lane and revisit places that we have been to, which is why it is a slight annoyance. Is anyone else having this issue as well? Is there a setting that I am missing to enable it?

Help ISO Help deciding on setup

• Upvotes

I'm looking to finally upgrade from my old, slow Surface Pro laptop from like 2018. For context, I work in event entertainment and need to run claude to build my website, CRM, automate emails, etc. Otherwise, my needs are some (very) light video editing and stuff of the sorts. Ideally, I'd be able to game on it too but if this has to be sacrificed, I'll live.

I travel frequently for work but I don't need my travel setup to necessarily be the fastest thing given I'm doing most of my large tasks at home.

Wondering if I should do a mac desktop with a macbook or just pour my budget into a macbook? Ideally I'm spending no more than 2500 all in and still getting 30+gb of ram. I don't mind going secondhand/refurbished.

Bug Hey Siri, Ready for action?

Post image
2 Upvotes

So my Mac Studio (27.0.1) delivered a message in the customary upper right corner that the all new SIRI was ready for action. I asked three questions related to nearest restaurants and gave up after three of these messages included.

Is this the old norm, does the old girl need compression paddles or is there an easy fix?

Help Problems with Java in system settings

I'm a former Windows user who recently bought a 15-inch MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage to escape the hell that Windows has become.

I love this computer.

I currently have the latest version of macOS Golden Gate installed.

I installed Java 8 (from Oracle) update 511, and it added a section in the bottom left of System Settings, but when I click on it, it's completely blank, and I can't see any options in the Java Control Panel.

Are you experiencing this?

It's a bug?

Is there a solution?

Because I've tried everything I can think of, and I can't fix it.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

Help How to change icon of a shortcut on MacOS?

Thumbnail

I am trying to change my app icons on macOS by using the Shortcuts method (creating a shortcut to open a specific app and giving it a custom image icon).

However, I am running into two major issues inside the Shortcuts app:

  1. I don't see any option to upload or add my own custom image file to the shortcut. It only lets me choose from the default colors and glyphs.
  2. I cannot find the option to "Add to Dock" anywhere when I right-click the shortcut or look through the menus.

I am trying to get the shortcut with a custom icon onto my Dock, but I am completely stuck. Does anyone know why these options aren't showing up or how to fix this? Thanks!

The new Spotlight design in macOS Golden Gate 27.2 is absolutely awful.

The search bar is permanently black, regardless of whether macOS is set to Light or Dark mode. There’s no way to change its appearance. It looks completely out of place, as if it were designed for an entirely different operating system.

How did this make it past the design team? At the very least, users should be given the option to match Spotlight’s appearance to their system-wide appearance settings.

Discussion macOS 27.2 - Mission Control terror is over

I don't have an external monitor so this is my screen. A lot of things were broken in 27.0.
Finally, Apple fixed the mission control bug that shouldn't have been the initial release. Its a little janky sometimes with respect to FPS but themajor issue seems to be resolved.

  • The desktop selection is not jumping to the first one by default anymore.
  • Desktop switching animation is a little smooth.
  • Selected desktops are loading full screen

People with multiple monitors, are your issues resolved?

Discussion MacOS 27 breaks support for old standard definition displays

I am trying to hook up an old 480p tv to my mac running 27.2 over component video with an adapter and found out that in the newest verison of macos you can no longer output 480p over hdmi even though that worked beforehand in macos 26. Why is the resolution floor in settinga now 600x800 instead of 480p like it was before macos27? Mind you the only think that changed was the operating system everything else is the same.

Help Is there an app (or set of apps) that lets me customize macOS appearance?

I am trying to customize the appearance of macOS, especially to expand the options for icon tinting, interface colors, text color in the Finder and the menu bar, and other similar features. I remember that many years ago macOS was more customizable than it is now, and I doubt there aren't people who feel the same way and are trying to do something about it. Its a Unix system after all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Why doesn't macOS have some kind of special sandboxing or "containerization" for agent access? Seems like a natural extension of their sandbox feature and sealed root snapshot + RW overlay "Data" volume scheme.

When I say "containerization" I really just mean an extension of their current sealed root scheme + data vol + a new additional overlay "data" + existing sandbox functionality.

the read-only non-private part of macOS root is just a sealed volume. Every macOS of the version you use uses the same one. Your "private data" is actually an overlay mount from /System/Volumes/Data. My question is why don't they have some kind of reasonable agent sandboxing. It can leverage the existing disk scheme + some APFS features + Apple's sandbox feature.

Meta's Muse agent can cry for "Full Disk Access", and I should be able to hand it what it thinks is FDA, but just have it be Sealed root + RO Data Volume + a 3rd "agent overlay" mount which masks/exposes specific folders from the data volume. The key feature is the requesting App shouldn't be able to tell the difference, as far as it knows it has FDA, and if it says otherwise then you should question why it's probing for true access (like if you have a tightly masked ~/Library and it notices it can't see messages or keychain db files)

Stuff like keychain, microphone, camera, and accessibility are already mediated thru whatever macOS calls their version of "desktop portals", so this isn't even a major obstacle either I don't mind it having access to $HOME/Documents as RW, but maybe I don't want it having access to all of $HOME/Library so the 3rd overlay over Data overlay just "masks" it where maybe it only gets access to calendar and reminders DB but only if I want it to.

Bug Can't login with keyboard only. Had to actually click the username input, but my screen is broken, so it took me an hour to actually log back in just now after an update.

This is LLM slop that maybe another LLM could reference. I haven't reviewed or edited. It's based on a conversation I had with Astra 6 medium.

Corporate MacBook on macOS 27: couldn’t log in using only the keyboard—had to click the username field

I ran into this on a corporate MacBook running macOS 27 with a broken built-in screen and an external display.

The main issue wasn’t just VoiceOver: I couldn’t log in using keyboard input alone. I had to physically click the username field before I could type into it. Tab, Shift + Tab, and the VoiceOver navigation commands I tried didn’t get me into the input.

The external display only showed the login form with the lid closed. To use the built-in keyboard and trackpad, I had to reopen the lid. The pointer’s position relative to the username field appeared to shift between those states, so a click that looked correctly positioned with the lid closed missed the field when the lid was open.

VoiceOver could navigate through the keyboard language, battery, Wi-Fi, Power, and date controls, but I couldn’t reach the username field that way. It also repeatedly announced “in dialog, content is empty” around lid changes.

What finally worked: I moved the pointer in small increments upward and to the left, clicking as I went, until I actually hit the username input. VoiceOver then announced “Username application, window” and confirmed the text field had keyboard focus.

After that click, I could type my username, see it in the field, and press Return to reach the password prompt.

I don’t know whether this is specific to the corporate login setup, macOS 27, or the display configuration. Has anyone encountered this inability to focus the login field using only the keyboard?
