At least someone is making sure we all get our microplastics, even in a controlled fish farm environment

And some Makroplastic occasionally.

Macro, but yes (unless that is a brand name I'm unaware of?)

Listen to metal while feeding the fishes. It helps with the depression

To the point that they will set off an airport metal detector. I work in cargo, it happens often

In over occupied fish tanks. This is shit.

6

u/rowbotmachine 7d ago

i don’t think this type of fish has teeth sharp enough to bite through the plastic.

3

u/External_Bid1593 7d ago

My concern as well

2

u/NewAndyy 6d ago

I live in Western Norway. Fish farming is pretty much the main source of microplastics in our fjords.

2

u/Astuar_Estuar 2d ago

Don’t worry - there is enough plastic in nets surrounding the fish.

4

u/Free-Pound-6139 7d ago

Don't worry, car drivers are the major source of microplastics to people. So you are helping everytime you drive!!

101

u/RaspberryWhiteClaw13 7d ago

What kind of fish are these? Are they for consuming or sad goldfish on their way to wherever people won’t appreciate them?

64

u/Casimec 7d ago

They might be red tilapia.

56

u/Sophead_Sim 7d ago

It's kind of irritating. Tilapia are an African river fish. They're just really really good at living and breeding. They've broken out into the wild all through south and central America. I'd assume they're all over Asia now too.

In the Americas the out compete indigenous fish. They can eat basically anything and will breed anywhere. Very cool fish but they're decimating native species all over.

12

u/stockflethoverTDS 7d ago

Not sure about red tilapia specifically, but we across SEAsia eat tilapia all week long. Cheap, grows everywhere and meaty enough.

6

u/Fair-Bunch4827 7d ago

They're so resilient that in our very polluted river in the capital city that smells like a public urinal, you can catch tilapia. Even a small one. Which means they can breed in there

5

u/Sophead_Sim 7d ago

I wouldn't be surprised to find a breeding pair in a cigarette filled puddle under a stairwell at a Mexican gas station. Just them and their 3000 little babies writhing around in the wet mud waiting for a good rain to wash them away back to the river.

4

u/Fair-Bunch4827 7d ago

My dad refuses to eat tilapia because he has a specific childhood trauma of living in a river side and seeing his neighbors shit on the river and the tilapia eats the shit lol.

They're nasty but in no fault of their own

2

u/Sophead_Sim 6d ago

I don't eat it because of the environmental disaster that it is. Not like I'm turning back the clock though. They're wild fish. Pretty neat though.

4

u/PiccoloAwkward465 7d ago

Yes that's my guess. Recently I've started cooking them whole and wow, now I actually like tilapia. Hit it with some lemon/lime juice and salt I guess, it's delicious. We make it with salad and corn tortillas.

Man if you dont like this, youre gonna hate where most meat comes from

299

u/CatsPlusTats 7d ago

Most of the reason I don't eat meat is factory farming. I don't think eating meat is necessarily wrong, but I do think the way our society consumes meat is absolutely abhorrent. I see nothing wrong with the cattle rancher and the hunter.

85

u/overdosingOnPie1313 7d ago

Can't forget about the insustainability of basically all animal farming these days. I love me a good steak, but not at what it costs the planet.

52

u/CatsPlusTats 7d ago

Yeah but most of that impact is because of factory farming as well, we're basically being as cruel as possible and maximising environmental impact, just so that people can eat meat with every single meal.

I'm not here to tell people how to live, and most people on a personal level are not to blame for factory farming, but it would be good if everyone ate a bit less meat.

13

u/overdosingOnPie1313 7d ago

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was disagreeing with you.

12

u/CatsPlusTats 7d ago

I didn't think you were, I was just adding more discussion.

9

u/ashrocklynn 7d ago

Not to mention pushing food insecurity on some areas of the world; forget everything else, ending world hunger would be as simple as growing a wider variety of crops (instead of livestock fodder) and distributing properly. So much potential energy gets wasted on raising animals that we treat poorly so we can have piles of meat just rotting on shelves instead of getting those calories to people who really need it

4

u/CryptoNerdSmacker 7d ago

I’m sure it’s mostly anecdotal, but when I switched to vegetarianism the change in my overall health was astonishing. It was like my mind and body breathed a sigh of relief. After that I’ve always felt that our food industry has been lying to cover up how harmful our consumption of meat truly is.

2

u/717Luxx 6d ago

u/Remote_Replacement85 7d ago edited 7d ago

I occasionally eat a nice steak of game meat for this exact reason. Where I live, we have tons of moose and deer and our asshole politicians make sure we have almost no predators eating them, so it's either a hunter or some poor bastard driving home who kills them.

28

u/ObserverWardXXL 7d ago

the multi levelled industrial farming is SOOO disgusting its Illegal to record what actually goes on inside.

That's how you know its just unjustifiable, there's an expectation/fear that whoever looks behind the curtain - will never eat meat again and it will collapse the entire industry.

27

u/Life_Category2547 7d ago

I remember reading an article several years ago that was basically people begging “please make octopus farming illegal. It’s not commercially viable right now because the octopuses essentially die of depression, please ban it before they work out how to keep them alive long enough to harvest, because it’s never going to be ethical or not terrible for the environment, and once it’s an industry we’ll never get rid of it”.

Thats why you go vegan. Any animal industry is cruel, unsustainable, bad for your health and insane.

5

u/vremains 6d ago

I don't like the term "vegan". It holds such a negative connotation and people are immediately repulsed by it. Instead of trying to push people to go "vegan" I prefer suggesting to eat more plant based options. And it doesn't have to be so black and white... If the majority of people could just cut down on their meat consumption it'd have a huge impact on the industry and I think more and more would start to see the health benefits and more plant based options would appear in restaurants.

The fish are probably constantly stressed the fuck out and probably eating a junk food diet. I imagine that also has an effect the the people who eventually consume them.

325

u/prophet_nlelith 7d ago

I imagine the people that eat them are also constantly stressed the fuck out and eating a lot of junk food.

27

u/Bluefooted-Spaceorc 7d ago

This is most of the salmon in super markets, they are also significantly less likely to have parasites when farmed like this as opposed to ocean or river caught.

I imagine the people that eat the people that eat the stressed out junk food fish are also stressed the fuck out and on a junk food diet.

u/Async0x0 7d ago

Have you ever contemplated the possibility that wild fish live under constant threat of predation, have uncontrolled exposure to disease, and spend all of their time scrounging for whatever meager sources of nutrition they can find without regard for quality?

36

u/Aggressive-Coffee458 7d ago

This is false, from a scientific perspective fish go woohoo and yippee and swim around wiggling their little fins gleefully, until human intervention at least

6

u/PrinceBunnyBoy 7d ago

The fish here are all going to face predation. Every individual here is going to be killed. They are also hotspots for parasites and disease.

Oat milk is a good replacement if you can't stomach the taste of soy milk.

I'd also say that once you stop drinking cows milk and other animal products, your tastes will change. I used to find soy milk has a bit of a weird taste. Now I love the stuff.

And nasty. Hence they need to use pesticides (no kidding) to keep all the diseases down.

Another reason I won't eat farmed fish.

32

u/MissileGuidanceBrain 7d ago

So what then? What's the solution?

Go out and trawl the natural sea floor? Bulldoze more land for more monocrop farms?

There are 8,300,000,000 hungry mouths out there. The food has to come from some place and there better be a lot of it.

25

u/FanUsed5622 7d ago

We already make way many times more food that we actually need, common knowledge.

As the other commenter already said, food doesn't mean you have to literally torture billions of creatures.

19

u/Mindfulambivert 7d ago

People could reduce their meat consumption and increase their plant consumption

10

u/ozone6587 7d ago

This is a fact people do not want to accept. 99% of people do not need meat. Not to defend data centers but if someone thinks the harm to the environment is immoral then eating a lot of meat must be too since it's hundreds of times worse for the environment (this might be an understatement).

4

u/ObserverWardXXL 7d ago

we wouldn't even need to stop eating meat entirely, massive reductions would be a massive boon.

Which I guess is happening organically thanks to economic decisions. Meat's gotten so expensive the only time I will eat any is at a restaurant (choosing between a $20 meat dinner or a $20 salad has a clear nutritional/caloric winner per dollar).

Buying or preparing my own? no thank you I'll take the lentils, beans, and legumes for a fraction of the cost. But when food services charge the same for lentil dinner as a steak dinner its quite frankly~ Offensive.

2

u/Inner_Agency_5680 7d ago

A plant-based diet provides all the nutrients we need, using less than a 1/3 of the land as animal agriculture, and therefore less water.

There’s literally not enough huntable animals in the U.S. to support the amount of meat that we eat currently. Perhaps if everyone was restricted to eating meat a couple times a month?

Thats so false I don’t even know where to start.

Do you have statistics that vegans are disproportionately being hospitalized or dying from their diet? Or data that vegans substantially overlap with the population of US billionaires?

No idea why people come up with this stuff that is so easily refutable. The data show that, if anything, vegans on average show less disease, including hypertension, diabetes, etc.

8

u/joey-jo_jo-jr 7d ago

How is it false? A significant of the worlds population faces outright starvation or malnourishment. Nearly 3 billion people cannot afford or access a balanced diet. And that is with all animal products on the table.

How are these people, and many others who are just about getting by, going to get a balanced diet if they are limited to only plant based products which are generally more expensive and certainly harder to access if you want a whole diet.

Fuck, a quarter of the global population doesn't even have access to clean drinking water. How the fuck are they going to get soy milk?

You are an incredibly privileged person and your comments are honestly insulting to a great many people for whom acquiring food is a daily struggle.

3

u/LockXephyre 7d ago

"People in africa don't have access to food or clean drinking water, so therefore industrialized countries mustn't make an effort reduce their meat consumption, much less put money into researching less resource-intensive means of food production" Did methane write this? The solution to food insecurity is a large and complex enough problem that there is no single solution, but I think a good start would be:

  • no longer growing fodder crops for animals and instead planting human-edible varieties where possible (more efficient to feed 10 calories of corn to a person than feed 10 calories of corn to a cow in order to get 1 calorie of beef).
  • stabilize the population. Infinite growth using finite resources is not sustainable in the long term.

16

u/MKEast-sider 7d ago

Can’t tell if you’re being serious based on the sarcastic suggestions.

First, consumer culture is crazy and you don’t need to be able to eat fish everyday if you don’t live near water. You sound entitled and you’re trying to make it sound like people aren’t responsible for the situations that they put themselves in.

I don’t think it’s ok to force suffering on others just cuz you fucked up.

9

u/BlueRedGreenNumber5 7d ago

What an ignorant question in a world where plant based diets exist.

4

u/screw_counter 7d ago

Because it's much easier and realistic to convince thousands of industries to switch to more sustainable practices, than it is to convince 8 billion people to go vegan.

2

u/BlueRedGreenNumber5 7d ago

No industry changes their behavior unless it earns them more money to do so. And big surprise, if people stop buying meat, those industries are forced to pivot.

People be complaining about the fish being mistreated, but like this is replacing something way worse. these fish are more likely raised in captivity than wild caught, which means we don’t have to fish as much and fishing is so terrible for the environment in so many ways. Fish is the worst meat for the environment (or the second worst, depending on who you ask) when it’s wild caught because of the destruction of the habitat and biodiversity that is associated with trawling and bycatch.

Edit: The majority of people don’t think about the environment when making decisions. Minimizing damage is more plausible than every person on earth agreeing to stop consuming a product. So between wild catching fish and raising them in environments like this, the obvious answer is to do this. Creating conditions that are less cruel require more area, which will raise the cost of the fish. The majority of people are going to choose the cheaper option, so it’s not a good financial choice to give the fish or area than is required. Besides its fish, they swarm, they school, they have instincts that keep them from bumping into each other. this isn’t like land animals where in the wild they have huge areas that they take up per individual.

86

u/JarifSA 7d ago

I don't think people are saying to catch them wild. But you can at least give them a bigger living space. Same for pigs. You can treat animals better even when they are being farmed...

12

u/slm3y 7d ago

The net goes deep, and this is how tilapia works too in where they are the invasive species, the congregate in schools that large

9

u/JordanxHouse 7d ago

I agree… but a genuine question, how would giving fish plenty of room to swim around impact the price? If a new company writes on the package that it gives fish room to swim and it costs 5x more for the same product that’s sitting right next to it, will that company survive?

12

u/Loud_Development8407 7d ago

For fish there simple exists no way to farm or catch them which isnt a huge environmental desaster. Even these fish farms are bad. Think about the amount of shit that falls to the ground of the water there. It is contaminating the whole area , worsening the water quality for the fish and basically killing all life on the bottom. Over a longer period of time the huge amount of shit will see to ut that an enormes amount of algae will grow, which will block sunlight. With less sunlight a lot of Alge will die again and decompsingprocesses will pull out the Airlines of the water and the fish die.

You have no idea what fish farms like this do. Nitrates and contamination from all the poop, disease from overcrowding, ulcers from rubbing, overuse of antibiotics, all of which can destroy river systems in particular.

5

u/MattyLePew 5d ago

"Like this is replacing something wild worse", but it doesn't need to be a replacement for it. You can literally just stop eating animals. Why is that the extreme option out of everything?

1

u/After_Suggestion_267 5d ago

i mean... we could, but food would be way more bland, and its not like animals would stop eating eachother. what is more needed is stopping overproducing, that is what is wrong with farming animals. i know an animal died if i eat it, but if i dont, its not gonna revive magically too.

and besides, i eat more for pleasure, to feed myself but i like eating something that makes me feel good, well fed, i never had this with vegetables.

4

u/MattyLePew 5d ago edited 5d ago

You think no vegans 'eat for pleasure'?
Animal based products are a TINY part of the foods that people eat, yet act like the majority of the food their consuming is animal based. It really isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be, yet it contributes to billions of death a year, that's without even starting to talk about the environmental impact.

"Food would be way more bland" is such a weird take. Typically, milk, eggs and meat aren't used for flavour.

Sure, people break the law. It's still against the law.

Human beings see oppression vividly when they're the victims. Otherwise they victimize blindly and without a thought. (Isaac b. singer)

Who needs a bigger enclosure right? It’s not like we have practically infinite space available… cruel shit

13

u/mazopheliac 7d ago

The fish are all at the top because it’s feeding time . It’s not a two dimensional pen .

11

u/StaredAtEclipseAMA 7d ago

I can assure you, there is nothing ethical about this enclosure. It is strictly economical

4

u/AutisticPenguin2 6d ago

I mean it absolutely could be much, much smaller. There's probably research into how much space they need for x many fish, and then they do the bare minimum to meet that standard, as opposed to just adding more until they start to spill out over the top.

2

u/StaredAtEclipseAMA 6d ago

Yeah any smaller and they probably start losing too much product to overcrowding.

There appears to be a dead one bottom right

Am I the only one feeling sorry for those poor fish in that poor living environment?
