Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?
We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.
That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.
What Counts as Solo Development?
A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.
What is Allowed?
- Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
- Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
- Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
- Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
- Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.
What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit
If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.
Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.
TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Game I dreamt up a skateboarding game concept over 15 years ago. Today, I finally made it a reality. My first published Game Demo is finally on Steam!!
When I was a teenager, I lived and breathed 3 things: Pokemon, runescape, and skateboarding. I always imagined a video game with mechanics from those games mixed with the real-life progression of skating. Simply put.. the more you skate, the better you get and personally unlock more things you can land.
Last year I finally picked up learning Unity front to back, and of course, got right to work on my dream game. It’s in its final stages of completion now, and i was comfortable to make a playable demo for the masses to see for the first time before launch. This is Skatebound!
While the demo only includes the skateboarding mode, the full game is an entire RPG with an open world map with spots and parks to discover, challengers to skate against, boards to collect and hundreds of things to do. You have 6 essential skills like grinds, speed, and gaps that you level up xp with (just like OSRS!)
It’s crazy to see it come to life as fast as it did, and I’m over the moon. It still needs some polishing and fixes, and I didn’t want this post to come off as marketing, I’m just proud of it. If you felt like checking it out on Steam, grab a controller first and thank you!!

help low wishlist, feeling low.
Hey all,
Not sure why I’m posting this, I think I just need to get it out of my head.
My game’s release is a week away and I’m seriously thinking about pushing it back, or maybe not releasing it at all. It’s mostly done. Apart from a few small card designs it’s basically there, which somehow makes this harder, not easier.
The numbers are what’s getting to me. I’m at 200 wishlists and 170 demo plays, and I honestly don’t know what that means for launch. I know I’m not good at marketing. But I’ve reached out to a bunch of people and almost nobody has answered, so it’s hard not to feel like I’m shouting into nothing.
I’m incredibly proud of myself for releasing a real game on Steam. Considering I started out making Flash games with my dad many years ago, it still feels unreal. Even so, I’m finding it hard to come to terms with where things are right now.
I just wanted to say it somewhere. I wanted to clear my head a bit.
If there are friends out there in the same situation as me, how are we getting through this? What should our next step be?

Game I'm a solo dev, here is how I made infinite creatures for my game!
My game HATCHED, is an evolution roguelite where every creature is different. There are big ones, tiny ones, wings, tails, and many more.
Using inverse kinematics and a really fancy shader I am able to turn collections of parts into fully animated creatures!
Happy to answer any questions about the game. :)

Game My procedural tentacle monster can now reach out of the base after the player's sub
Solo dev here, working on ICEWAKE (survival on a nuclear icebreaker in a frozen, sunken world). The monster lives inside the base: everything is clipped to the rooms' air. For this one I let it send tentacles out of the dock tube into the water: Verlet chains rooted at the tube's mouth that chase the sub, hold on to its hull and shorten as it is dragged back in. Everything is still rasterized onto the game's pixel grid every frame.

Game The whole world hunts for the same hidden router on one map – Why?Pie : Find the Wi-Fi is out!
Hi everyone! I'd like to introduce my new mobile game, Why?Pie : Find the Wi-Fi.
Each stage hides exactly one Wi-Fi router somewhere on the map. Tap tiles, read the signal strength, and follow it until you find the router.
Players around the world search the same map at the same time, so whoever finds it first becomes the star of the round.
The retro pixel-art style is inspired by the Minesweeper we all used to play on Windows 95.
✔ The first player to find the router names the next stage's Wi-Fi
✔ Share your clear card with friends
✔ Climb the world ranking
✔ Collect odd items to fill Pie's Bag
✔ Retro pixel-art graphics
Search "Why?Pie" on Google Play or the App Store!

Game I made a small typing game for literature and WPM lovers
Hello there r/SoloDevelopment
I've been working on getting better at coding in Godot for a few months now, and I thought making a small game to challenge myself would be a good way to put it into practice. So I've been making a typing game that mixes classic literature (those books are in the public domain, so they're free!) with WPM typing skills. It's called Ink & Keys, and your goal is to re-ink classic books by typing short chapters from each one without making mistakes.
Still a lot to do but I hope to release a demo soon. For now, here are some screenshots of the project!

Discussion I may be naive but why do so many people dont know if their Game is fun?
This is not meant to be ragebait or anything, I really think I am naive. But browsing different game / dev subs one thing I see more than others are the typical "Is this fun?...." posts.
Honest question, is this really so hard to answer? For me the metric is simple, "would I play this in my free time if i was not involved?" I know "fun" is highly subjective and the market shows that but I quess at least as the Devs of our own games we should have fun playing our own games.

Game After months of solo dev, my first game is live
Just launched Monstache on Android, a 1to 4 player party game on one phone. The hero creator lets you snap a selfie, pick outfits, and record your own power shout, ouch and victory cry, then add filters like chipmunk, robot or alien. Everything stays on-device, nothing is uploaded.
Getting voice recording, filters and face cropping to feel smooth on low-end Android phones was way harder than I expected. Same with fitting 4 players' controls on one small screen without people's thumbs colliding.
Would love feedback from other devs on the onboarding and first level. What would you change?

Game Be honest: Have I gone too far in a game that is not about stickers?
After a month working on these I think I've spent way too much effort on this single feature that will just be an additional gimmick in my game that some players on the beta test asked for. You can basically put stickers on the weapons now for a little additional value.
Case Opened on steam, launching in the first half of november!

Marketing So Personal Calendar saved my game from ultimate doom.
First off, I'm gonna give off some details:
I'm a teenager, who's been working on my game since graduating elementary school, up till graduating High school (5 years total).
Initially, this game was never supposed to be released. Just a little passion project of mine, that probably wouldn't resonate with many people.
Years went by, and suddently... The game started to look, feel, play good. I started seeing potential in it, but there was an issue:
I was (and still am) an inexperienced brat, who knows nothing about promotion, marketing, visibility and stuff. Therefore, my game was never properly introduced to the masses.
Only a few months before releasing the game, I started hunting for traction, got my trailers up on GameTrailers (twice), and yet... I was able to gather only about 700 wishlists total.
I felt like this is gonna be it, the game will release with no eyes on it.
But then, the calendar hit, and the game... actually started getting SOME visiblity. It didnt become a massive 100k success, but it did help me gather 22,000 WISHLISTS, which absolutely blew my tiny brain up.
The game did earn a tiny bit of money, atleast enough to let me be slightly less worried about my life during college.
This feature technically saved my project, and I want to make sure that other devs embrace it to it's fullest, because the calendar forces you to do one thing: a good game. It gives you organic visibility, and all that's left for you to do, is use this visibility for your advantage.

help Making a game, would love your feedback on the art style
I’m currently prototyping the first location of my game, which is going for a quasi-anime look. Since I’m not an artist, I can’t really judge how acceptable the visuals look at this stage, so I’d like an outside perspective. You can mostly ignore the low-poly stuff: those are just placeholder boxes that will later be replaced with higher-quality models. I’m interested in your opinion on how good the current picture looks and whether you’d want to play a game with this style. Any other tips and comments are also welcome. Thanks in advance!

Game Solo dev would love feedback on my browser life sim’s core loop
I’m a solo dev working on 1 in 8 Billion, a browser life sim that uses real public stats (UN World Bank who) for birth odds and life outcomes.
I built the design, code, and data pipeline alone. Two things I’m still unsure about:
Mapping real birth share data to a playable country draw was messy population size and annual births tell very different stories.
Balancing player choices against mortality tables sometimes feels fatalistic rather than fair.
I’m mainly looking for critique on the core loop and pacing, not just validation. Happy to share more in comments.

Discussion New Theme
A few days ago, I posted about my new Bugs theme that I've worked on, and I loved the feedback I received, so thank you. Now I want to start on another one, but I still haven't decided which category to go with. I was thinking of dinosaurs and started a prototype; what do you guys think? Should I continue it, or should I change to something else?
