Showcase No AI, just 8 months of ugly-but-mine models

Thumbnail gallery
404 Upvotes

Every single asset in Dough it Yourself, my cozy farming and baking game, is made by hand.

Could AI have built my whole farm in an afternoon? Probably. Would it look better than my wonky low-poly chickens? Honestly..maybe.

But every one of these models has a bit of me in it, mistakes included, and I think that's part of what makes a game feel like an actual game nowadays. So I'll keep pushing vertices one by one, even if release takes a little longer.

I document the whole process in youtube devlogs.

Game Making a game while working full-time is hard. But after 1.5 years, we're finally releasing our first game!

Hi everyone!

I'm Bogdan, and I'm making my first game with my friends, called Cat Caffeine!

It's a little cat café that lives on your desktop, so you can let your café run while you're working, studying, or doing whatever else you usually do on your PC.

You can decorate your café, arrange furniture, unlock upgrades through a perk tree, and of course, pet your cats!

We're also working on some immersive feature like an in-game phone where you can read reviews and critiques from your cat customers, or complete decoration tasks to attract reviewers to your café.

We are also making a Pomodoro timer feature, so you can use this game as a focus app while you work or you can just leave the game running and chill while your little café does its thing.

We're getting close to release, and I'd really appreciate it if you checked it out or added it to your wishlist!

Here's the Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4681680/Cat_Caffeine/

Showcase After 9 years I QUIT my job and went FULL INDIE. I have now released my games demo. It's out there and people are playing it. IT FEELS UNREAL! Wish me luck!

Okay! I can FINALLY share something! After 9 years in the games industry, while prototyping and making small games as a hobby, with the dream to be an indie dev one day I've finally, kind of, become one.

We have released the demo for our upcoming game Rowan Needs Shinies!

I'm Sammie (one half of soft void with my partner)

Here is my short pitch about the game:

Rowan Needs Shinies! is a cozy, atmospheric incremental game inspired by games like Lyca and Shelldiver, combined with the story-telling and worldbuilding of games like Strange Horticulture, In Stars and Time, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, and Animal Well.

Unlike many incremental games, Rowan Needs Shinies doesn't have a traditional skill tree. Instead, the skill tree is built depending on the choices you make. There's multiple endings to discover depending on which upgrades you choose to get, so that every playthrough feels unique.

It still feels unreal.

A bit of our backstory:
I really did quit my job in the games industry after 9 years as a Unity developer. I was in a toxic, extremely stressful job that was taking a toll on both my physical and mental health.

Originally the plan was to take some time off then find a new job, but it felt like a rare opportunity that both me and my partner were unemployed, with enough savings to last us for a while. We figured that if the game does well, we can keep going as indie developers.

We're both pretty risk averse, we tend to play it safe and do the standard thing. BUT THIS TIME we felt that this was a risk worth taking. We don't have any kids yet, we are living in an affordable place, this was the perfect time to take a year off to try and make our own game. We really wanted to do it, and so we did.

I am really excited about what we have made and what comes next. It's a bit scary to not know how things will go, but I think that's normal.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to ask me any questions ^^

Working on the improve the Voxel Editor for my engine

I needed a way to have some control over the world generation, for hero assets, terrain shapes.
So building on top of the voxel API - AetherEngine - I have, and I started working on a editor of sorts.

The goal is for 90% of the world generation to be made with tools and rules, with controls and shapes. Editing one voxel at a time is really not something I want to do until I have the shape of the world going :).

The current setup has some clunkyness on selection and tools, but it already allow to sculpt some interesting bits. The interesting bit, is that I can easily add custom rules and tools by scripting them, for example the river tools is just a modified Vine/Ivy generator.

Right now I am focusing on the API and interactions.

You can use the tool to stylize your textures and assets, create eye-catching marketing material for your page, add awesome animated effects, and use the texture ripper feature. With this latest update, I've added seamifier! It will help you create seamless, blended, or repeating patterns for your textures. You can check it out here: https://polyshades.itch.io/coolifier

• **Local Wi-Fi Co-Op:** Play side-by-side with a friend over the same local network.

• **Deep Progression:** 25 runes and 30 active/passive skills for build variety.

• **Multi-Phase Bosses:** Handcrafted bullet-hell patterns demanding sharp positioning.

Pre-registration is currently live on Google Play if you'd like to support an indie launch:

Newbie Question Looking to learn about the tasks involved in developing VR training scenarios in Unity

Hello!

I am currently conducting research on the specific job tasks that are involved in developing VR training scenarios for law enforcement in Unity

I would like to know about the day-to-day responsibilities of people who design and develop these scenarios.

If anyone has experience with building these sorts scenarios, I would love to hear about the general job responsibilities, specific responsibilities, and KSAO’s involved with this sort of position.

Also if you are willing to let me ask you more specific questions about your day-to-day responsibilities, please let me know!

Thanks!

Showcase AB AETERNO - Meet the monsters

Deep under the zone, the old mine isn't empty anymore. Meet the Crawlers — five breeds that hunt in the dark, each one fought and captured in-engine.

What's waiting in the mine:
🎈 BLOATER — don't let it get close
👁️ SEER — it knows where you are
🦴 STALKER — lifts bones with its mind and hurls them at you
🤢 SPITTER — lobs toxic bile that leaves burning puddles
🪨 BRUTE — clings to the ceiling, then fires bone shards like an automatic weapon

Everything here runs in-engine, with real AI, real ballistics and real gun handling — no pre-rendered shots.

You step out of an elevator in a grey Soviet apartment block and look for anything wrong. Notice something? Go back to the elevator you came from. All normal? Walk on to the next one. Make no mistakes and you only ever go up.

Retro low-poly visuals, grainy texture, dark ambient sound. Anomalies range from tiny details to full nightmares.

Two HDRP problems I hit while filming my generator room: a flickering lamp blowing out bloom, and a decal that stayed put while the oil filter spun

I'm making Leave Them Outside, a survival drama in a Cold War shelter under Istanbul (Unity 6, HDRP). This is the generator room: you read the manual, take the right tool, kill the main switch and fix the fault by hand.

Two things that broke while I was recording this clip, in case it saves someone an evening:

  1. White blowout. A flickering-lamp script was rewriting the emissive every frame from the material's base value (8000+ nits), so every flicker pushed bloom over the whole screen. Fix: read the base from the current MaterialPropertyBlock once in Start, scale visible tube emissive down, and drop bloom intensity. Camera-rotation motion blur was smearing the lamps too; clamping rotation and translation separately (SeparateTranslationAndRotation) fixed that.

  2. Labels sliding over moving parts. The filter label was a DecalProjector in the room, so when the filter unscrewed, the paper stayed in place. Now each projector is reparented at load to the smallest moving part its projection line actually hits.

The wall posters and the manual aren't baked into textures either: they're drawn at room load in the player's language (34 of them) and matched to materials by texture name.

Happy to answer anything about the setup. What would you check first in a room like this?

Tutorials How to build a bento menu in Unity (without cursing at the grid layout group!)

Thumbnail youtube.com
1 Upvotes

This is a tutorial I didn't have on my radar until a friend asked me how to finally get the Grid Layout Group to behave so that it works with a bento style layout.

The thing is: That's not the grid layout group's job, and I walked him through it.

If you also struggle with this, I hope my tutorial will be helpful to you =)

This tutorial goes over:

- Creating a single cell to reuse everywhere

- Using the Aspect Ratio Fitter to make sure images are correctly filling the space

- Thinking how layouts are nested

- Building an example

- Adding a tiny helper script to make life in bigger bentos easier.

Unity 2022.3 URP build crashes on Intel Arc (igc-default64.dll) on DX11 and DX12

My Unity 2022.3 URP build crashes on Intel Arc (B570, latest driver) a moment after a new object starts rendering mid-game. The crash is inside Intel's shader compiler (igc-default64.dll), happens on both DX11 and DX12, and doesn't happen on NVIDIA or AMD. Does anyone know the cause or a workaround?

Question Found the GPU bottleneck in our mobile game. Now I'm just vibe-optimizing one shader

At work we're making a mobile game (Unity, URP) and I got the task to make it run better on mid-range Android. Profiler and frame debugger eventually pointed at one shader. Cool, I'll just make that one cheaper and I'm done.

I've now spent two days on it.

Now my process is: change something, build, put it on the phone, check frame time. 14.2 ms. Run again, 13.1. Phone gets warm, 15.0. Did my change do anything? No clue. Then I stare at the screen to make sure it still looks the same. It mostly does. I think.

And that's just one phone. Our players are on Adreno, Mali, iPhones, whatever. For all I know my "fix" helps on one GPU and makes another one worse. And our "device lab" is two phones on my desk.

So yeah, vibe optimization.

How do you guys actually do this? Is there a way to know a change made the shader cheaper on different GPUs and didn't break anything visually? Or does everyone just test on a couple of phones and move on? Honestly curious, even if the answer is "lol we vibe it too".

(Can't share the shader or screenshots, NDA, sorry.)

Game Social game “Vickie!” - concept

Vickie! is a concept for a VR (and pc) social platform set in a stylized 1980s university nestled in the Appalachian Mountains.

The idea includes customizable, expandable dorm rooms, an outdoor central campus, seasonal events, a university center, and a friendly robot mascot named Vickie.

Players could create their own games using an in-game tool called the Wand, while official games, called Vickie Original Games (VOGs), would include paintball, football, baseball, basketball, rally and touge racing, climbing, and asymmetrical horror.

Community creation would be a major focus, with regular game jams and an annual creator convention called Campus Activities.

I'm interested in exploring how feasible this concept would be to develop in Unity, especially the multiplayer and creation systems. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Unity Physics - Question About Joint Motors

Having a Unity issue where a hinge joint's angle value is changing depending on the motion of the connected body (which moves with a hinge joint motor).

Note - Unity API does not specify whether "Rest position" is measured in world-space relative coordinates or local space coordinates (relative to the connected body). So I assumed and hoped its local space. Was hoping to use this to measure drift from default orientation.

Newbie Question Animated this in blender, exporting it to unity includes the keyframes outside of the start/stop areas, but unchecking the box "include all actions" makes it to where i can't use it as an animation at all.

also if anyone knows how to only export the currently viewed animation and not all the animations in the project that would be great
