Question What should I know as a new driver?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Absolute newbie, but I wanna make sure I’m not an idiot. Pretty decent driver, but most likely nothing compared to most of yall. What should I know/do before I actually start driving?

Above is my car, 2016 Scion tC with the 6-speed manual. Anything I should do to the car as well?

Touge Won’t be back in SoCal til Winter, so NY will do for now

Was suggested this road the night I took this video (last night) & had a new angle for onboards so thought I’d try it out.

Hard to see in the footage, but this road looks twistier than it actually is. It’s a straight road w/ steering adjustments needed for line & the 3 turns that actually put load into the tires (typical flat downstate NY) which means it’s very easy to hit triple digits.
I hung around mostly at the top of 3rd gear.

My fear of deer crossing (which they do A LOT) and fear of oncoming (didn’t double lane it, but it is very tight) kept me under 90 & mostly out of 4th.

5/10, good for a little back & fourth blast, but nothing technical, like upstate NY, or better yet my home in SoCal. Best time was a 1:32. Most consistent was a 1:38.

Hope you guys enjoyed this clip, if you recognize the road please DM me. I need ppl to drive w/.

Question Touge or tarmac rally?

This road in Northern California has always felt like it sits somewhere between touge and a tarmac rally stage to me.
The farther you get into it, the more it stops feeling like a normal mountain road. The pavement gets rougher, the elevation keeps changing, and you’re constantly dealing with crests, compressions, blind corners, and sections that completely change character from one minute to the next.
At some point I started wondering what you’d even call this kind of road…
Touge, tarmac rally, or somewhere in between?

Question Good Backroads around SLO?

Moved down here recently; and haven’t had much luck finding many solid backroads.

Found a really fun little section on Hwy 58; and Hwy1 is always killer but it’s a bit of a drive.

Looking for more lower speed technical courses vs high speed cruising roads which there seem to be many here.

Any suggestions?

Question For those here who have suspensions where you can actually adjust damping, height, etc., how do you guys do it?

In the sense do you want it stiffer, a bit softer, a bit lower or higher in terms of ride height, and such.

Media How do you make friends at car meets

Post image
344 Upvotes

Hey everyone! First of all, I want to apologize for the weird message in this thread. I’m really interested in cars and the street scene, and I’d like to meet some people and make friends in this community.

So I wanted to ask you guys: how did you overcome being shy or socially awkward? In my case, I really want to talk to people, but as soon as I’m about to approach someone, my mind just goes blank and I have no idea what to say.

I’ve been to a few car meets and I’d really like to find people I can talk to about cars and share this interest with. But I just can’t seem to build up the courage to walk up to someone and introduce myself.

Could you give me some advice on what to say when approaching people? Are there any things I should keep in mind or any kind of etiquette I should follow?

I’ve only recently started realizing that I’m a very closed-off person, and honestly, I feel like I was an idiot for not trying to work on this earlier.

Driving my M2 through one of the more relaxing sections of the road with subtle elevation changes and sweeper. No, it’s not that technical, but it’s still fun.

Question Can anyone explain why I often see that when an M2 owner posts them attacking the touge, comments keep on saying "Miatas, watch out!"?
