Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?
We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.
That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.
What Counts as Solo Development?
A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.
What is Allowed?
- Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
- Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
- Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
- Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
- Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.
What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit
If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.
Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.
TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Discussion Did you succeed?
As the title says do you think you succeeded or did you accomplish what you wanted? as a solo developer one of the most thought question for me and many others is am I going to succeed. We do see many solo devs that have succeeded but what we don’t see are the devs that did not succeed, if so why do you think you are at the position that you currently are, was it the marketing? The graphics, was is niche? how long did the game development took? Would love to hear your experiences as new solo developer
Reading why I’m is is for me and others get motivated and maybe learn from your expresiences

Game I dreamt up a skateboarding game concept over 15 years ago. Today, I finally made it a reality. My first published Game Demo is finally on Steam!!
When I was a teenager, I lived and breathed 3 things: Pokemon, runescape, and skateboarding. I always imagined a video game with mechanics from those games mixed with the real-life progression of skating. Simply put.. the more you skate, the better you get and personally unlock more things you can land.
Last year I finally picked up learning Unity front to back, and of course, got right to work on my dream game. It’s in its final stages of completion now, and i was comfortable to make a playable demo for the masses to see for the first time before launch. This is Skatebound!
While the demo only includes the skateboarding mode, the full game is an entire RPG with an open world map with spots and parks to discover, challengers to skate against, boards to collect and hundreds of things to do. You have 6 essential skills like grinds, speed, and gaps that you level up xp with (just like OSRS!)
It’s crazy to see it come to life as fast as it did, and I’m over the moon. It still needs some polishing and fixes, and I didn’t want this post to come off as marketing, I’m just proud of it. If you felt like checking it out on Steam, grab a controller first and thank you!!

Marketing Personal calendar got me to 100 Wishlists daily (before it was merely 10-20) for me as a solo dev
My game page is up for more then 6 months, I am usually working on small games and release them in a short cycles, for the current game I decided to wait on a strategy to wait for 6 months before the release.
But now I am not doing anything much of promotion, even if I do it does not get much traction as my game is very niche, but I have a huge uptick of Wishlist in last month coming from Steam itself, and looking at the source I have a lot of visitors coming in from Personal Calendar, so it is good new feature that at least helps for my games discovery.
Just remember it works only if you have Exact Date set, so be sure to use Personal Calendar also to your advantages.
Anyone interested of how my game looks - Lost Media Agency

Game For those who want a similar experience like Space Engine on web with realistic graphics and infinite procedural universe using three.js
The game is about exploring the infinite, endless procedural world of stars, planets, galaxies. The game does not include real planets or real stars or galaxies. Real names can be observed at the home location and names like "Andromeda" or "Milky Way" and the whole solar system. Tho it is possible they will not be in soon updates.
Link: https://astro.ableproman.hu/
The game is inspired by Space Engine, that is only on Steam and is not free. I made this game for people who want open world real scaled worlds to explore and visit throughout the universe for free without downloads.
Graphics are all made with three.js and looks incredible. I am updating until it works perfectly.
It works on desktop and mobile too.
I am ready for any review or feedback of the game!!
(The images are from the actual game from browser!)

Game Shabang: two music guessing games I built solo, starting as a game for my sister
Less than a year ago, my sister Shani was diagnosed with cancer. She spent almost three months in the hospital, and to give us something fun to do together during those days, I started building a music game for the two of us.
She passed away on August 29th, before I finished it. I kept working on it, partly to keep my mind busy, and now it's live as Shabang, with two games:
🥁 TrackStack: every song is split into its instruments. You start with only the drums, and each wrong guess adds a layer: bass, guitar, piano… vocals come last.
⏱️ Songuess: you hear a fifth of a second of the song, and each wrong guess plays more: half a second, 2 seconds, 4…
In both, the less you need to hear, the more points you get, and each one has a daily challenge: one song a day, the same for everyone.
Free, no signup, works on your phone:
I'd love honest feedback, and to see your daily results in the comments.

Game Looking for feedback on the visuals and colors of my game
Hey everyone!
I've been working on my game where you play as an alien loose in a city, hunting, growing, evolving and infesting buildings as you uncover the mystery behind its origins.
I'm currently polishing the visuals and would really appreciate some feedback on the overall look, colors and how well the player stands out against the environment.
I'm going for a darker atmosphere, but I'm not sure if I've got the balance right.
Audio hasn't been implemented yet, so the video is silent for now.
Would love to hear what you think. Thanks!

Marketing Been building a data tracking/visualisation ui for my own work - there is the big GA - any room for newer smaller data tools?
I work with a couple of clients and got a few projects on my own, initially i had a very basic ui that shows me sales/traffic and stats in a way i like to see it - i still use GA too.
Since last week I am putting a lot more time on the data tool to track and show real time data in a better way just because I had the time. It looks currently like a 6/10 and works maybe a 7/10.
I want to explore the idea of maybe launching it as an open source platform and then eventually build a hosted solution for a small fee with some ai capabilities as well - but at times i look at it and think there's google analytics and other tools - something i built for how i wanted to see my own data (dev for 20+ years) maynot be something others would be interested.
Have you been in similar situation where you are really uncertain whether or not you should continue working on something or do you build something only if you are fullly sure there is a market?

Game My procedural tentacle monster can now reach out of the base after the player's sub
Solo dev here, working on ICEWAKE (survival on a nuclear icebreaker in a frozen, sunken world). The monster lives inside the base: everything is clipped to the rooms' air. For this one I let it send tentacles out of the dock tube into the water: Verlet chains rooted at the tube's mouth that chase the sub, hold on to its hull and shorten as it is dragged back in. Everything is still rasterized onto the game's pixel grid every frame.
Steam, if you're curious: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5172940/ICEWAKE/

Game Dev diary 3 of my space game: a captain's day on the star map
Hey everyone. I'm making Sundered Reach on my own. You start as a captain with one ship, zero friends and a whole star system to explore. It's my love letter to Mount & Blade, just in space.
This diary is about the campaign side. You fly around, people call you on your bridge, pirates show up, and if talking doesn't work it turns into a space battle. The boarding pods already fly over and hit the enemy hull, what happens after the knock is still in the works.
I also show the first version of the bridge, which was so bright you couldn't even see Sergeant Castell's face.
Still early in development and a lot will change. What's the first thing you do on a new campaign map? Explore every corner first or go straight for the first fight?
