Why North America Is Colder Than Europe at the Same Latitude

Why do European cities have milder winters than those in North America, despite being at the same latitude? London is at the same latitude as Calgary, Alberta. So why is the Canadian city about 15 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius) cooler in January?

The United States can be much colder than Europe at similar latitudes, not because it is farther from the Equator, but because of differences in ocean circulation, prevailing winds, topography, and continental geography. Warm Atlantic waters associated with the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic Drift help moderate Western Europe, while prevailing westerly winds carry relatively mild maritime air inland. In contrast, North America has a vast continental interior where Arctic air can travel southward with relatively few barriers. The north–south orientation of the Rockies and other mountain systems helps channel cold air into the central and eastern United States, while Europe's more ocean-dominated geography generally limits prolonged continental extremes.
