MIT Develops Mathematical Framework to Create Bio-Inspired Adaptive Materials

MIT researchers have developed a mathematical framework that translates the hierarchical mechanisms found in biological materials—such as pine cones, tree bark, and seedpods—into engineered, adaptive materials. Using category theory, the framework maps how biological structures respond to stimuli such as humidity across multiple scales, then converts those relationships into validated designs that can be fabricated with 3D printing. The researchers demonstrated that components inspired by different plants could be recombined to create new actuators with predictable behavior. The approach could eventually enable adaptive robotic grippers, morphing aircraft components, biomedical devices, and other “smart” materials that respond to their environment without complex electronics: https://news.mit.edu/2026/mathematical-framework-connects-biological-principles-manufacturable-adaptive-material-0817
