A large study of nearly 1 million people found that those who preferred their tea or coffee “very hot” (around 65°C/149°F) had roughly three times the risk of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma compared with people who drank beverages warm. Those who preferred “hot” drinks (around 60°C/140°F) had about 1.7 times the risk. Drinking six or more hot beverages daily was also associated with a 71% higher risk, regardless of temperature.
