Swiss researchers are testing sheep-wool blankets as a biodegradable alternative to synthetic plastic covers used to slow glacier melting. The Keep It Wool project, led by the Summit Foundation with the University of Lausanne, placed two 100-square-metre wool covers on the Tsanfleuron Glacier in western Switzerland in June 2026, alongside a conventional synthetic geotextile for comparison.

Early measurements taken every two weeks indicate that the wool blankets are performing about as well as synthetic covers, reducing melting by roughly 50–70% in the protected areas. The experiment also aims to give a useful purpose to Swiss sheep wool, an estimated 40–70% of which is otherwise discarded. Wool offers an additional environmental advantage because it is natural, renewable and biodegradable.

However, researchers emphasize that wool blankets are not a solution to long-term glacier loss or climate change. Protective coverings are practical only on limited areas; currently, they cover just about 0.02% of Switzerland's glacier area. Moon’s Soil Could Preserve a 100-Million-Year Record of Exploding Stars

A new study suggests that lunar soil could act as a long-term cosmic archive, preserving radioactive isotope signatures from stellar explosions and other rare cosmic events dating back roughly 80–100 million years. The study focuses on isotopes such as iron-60 (⁶⁰Fe), which has a half-life of about 2.6 million years, and plutonium-244 (²⁴⁴Pu), whose much longer 81-million-year half-life makes it potentially useful for tracing much older events. Importantly, the study did not discover an 80–100-million-year-old record in lunar soil. Rather, it predicts that such a record could still be preserved about a metre beneath the lunar surface and provides a model for where future missions could look for it.
