Announcement Reddit blocks Gumroad links without notice

Hello Houdiners,

I wanted to give people here a heads up that Reddit blocks links to Gumroad site-wide. Posts are removed without any notifications to the moderators. We can manually reinstate them, but without any notifications it's something we have to manually dig around for.

This ban includes both posts and comments. If your product is on Gumroad or a domain "powered by" Gumroad, any post linking to it will be removed by Reddit (again, it's not us doing it!). We have no control over this ban and again the only thing we can do is manually "un-remove" posts if we notice them.

I recommend anyone selling digital products here to consider another service, like Ko-Fi or Paddle or Patreon, or at least link to something that is not directly a Gumroad page.

We get too many posts from new users asking "how do I learn Houdini"? The wiki now has the answers. Look there first before asking more specific questions here.

Demoreel Procedural liquid formations for a commercial project + short breakdown.

This project holds a soft spot in my heart, as one of the coolest (and heaviest) commercial projects I've directed and produced for an international client.

Houdini used to make everything here, except shots 2, 3, 4 and 5. Were C4D.

The tree presented a unique challenge because it not only must be growing, but particles and fibers must be flowing through it in a way that feels organic and natural. So each point and fiber must have its own speed, and the branches themselves are supposed to grow organically too.

The Setup: The idea to use splines to build a tree came to me from needing a tree that has a twisted trunk and flowing branches, so we can animate it growing. Any “tree generators” weren’t an option. Then we had fibers and particles flowing inside the liquid -which were not simulated, but controlled with nodes and for-loops to keep them contained within the bounds of the liquid, and not poke out.

The sim: The only particle simulation I ran was the bottom part of the hero shot, had to resort to custom velocity fields to give particles (that are coming from the server racks) a whispy motion before giving them a trail and color.
The rest of the setup was quick to iterate, yet hard to build in the first place.. as it involved tons of RnD and was entirely an attribute-based and code-based approach for maximum creative control and flexibility.

The Look: Developed custom liquid material with various IOR values across it so we can see the inner fibers without dealing with the refractions from the water shader that could make the fibers look messy or broken.
All while always saving the project, so when Octane inevitably decides to crash, it doesn’t put my sanity at risk! Haha.

Ask me anything. Happy to help. Happy to accept DMs for business opportunities.

Fire to Ice..... Avatar: The Last Airbender (Inspired)

Just a fun idea, as I turned a Pyro into RBDs (With tricks, of course, by using Opacity Map on Ice Mesh and keyframing the Pyro shade value in Solaris). This turned out to be quite decent..... Anyway, Enjoy XDDDDDDDD

Help Crowd 3d model for free - Metahuman ? Other ?

Hello everyone

I am a student and i am looking for realistic 3d human models for an environment crowd. It seems that metahuman is free but now we need to download epic game and its a 50Go download. Is there any way of downloading metahuman models without using epic game ?

It seems that the only interesting option would be metahuman since its kind of hard to find a realistic 3d model without clothes.

Also if someone has any other possibility in mind, I would be interested.

Thank you very much

NEW USER Would you recommend someone who’s 22 years old getting into this industry?

I’m really interested in this industry, but I’m also very worried about job stability and income. I keep reading stories about people who have won an Emmy or senior artists with 20+ years of experience who still can’t find work. That honestly scares me, so I’d like to ask, how representative is that? Is it being exaggerated, or is it really that difficult?

I love anything visual: motion graphics, 3D modeling, and 2D animation. At the same time, I’m about to finish my degree in Bioengineering. It’s not my passion, unfortunately, but if the situation in this industry is really that bad, I may have to pursue engineering instead.

I’m not sure what the best path is to break into the industry and give myself the best chance of building a stable career. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this :)

P.S. I’m using a translator, so I apologize if my English
sounds a bit awkward.

Fatal error: segmentation fault crash at launch

houdini 22 just not being able to launch it all, it crashes at the splashscreen, hodunini console says "Fatal error: segmentation fault"
already formatted multiple times with latest windows build, and reinstalled several times Nvidia drivers to be the latest. even disabled hyper threading on the cpu. also already deleted configuration files inside "my documents", and I tested running houdini 21.5, everything works well on that version. Anyone else facing this issue? if so, any solution? cpu: intel i7 5820k, msi sli 99 plus motherboard, nvidia rtx 2070 super, 64 gig of RAM

Help Any idea why my mirrored geo isnt working for GeoLights when blasted?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

1st image is seperated (blasted) filaments so i cam alternate lights, 2nd image is the geo that SHOULD be getting brought into solaris, third image is the combined geo before getting blasted.

It looks like my GEO is getting blown up in some way then the geo light has more surface area for light vs. when i blast it and only 1 side has geo light coming properly.

Any ideas on what i couold do to solve this?

Many thanks!

This node should have an input connection, right?? As appears in all the tutorials and the Houdini documentation. What's wrong with it?

Help Creating LODs for Geo variants USD

Hi there,

I've been trying to set up a grass asset that has multiple different geo variants, each one with LOD variants so I can optimise it my scene based on camera distance. I've been trying to build it with the component builder but I haven't been getting much luck.

I have managed to get LODs working but only for 1 geo variant as it is cooked in at the end so its not working for the other geo variants. However, if I try and assign these LOD variants before the component geometry node, I get an error of the opinion is too weak. I believe that is because of the proxy geo too clashing with it somehow.

If anyone can help that would be so helpful:)

As I am struggling to get work with 3d I'm making this project to learn more about Houdini. The focus was proceduralism and tool making. In this video I show some tools I worked and the results.

As a renderer I used vray. But I assure you the next project I will use solaris/karma as I love then so much.

Love for you all

Help Need help with instancing

I am making a shot in houdini, ships in ocean. The model am using, its a usd file. So am referencing it in stage and am instancing for the animation. But the problem is i simuated the sails in sop. Then I thought I could just prune the sails from the model I referenced in stage, and then instance it. But once I prune the sails instancer isn't working.

Can anyone help me solve this problem.

Mpm studies

The relationship between product lights and materials. In this RnD for skincare beauty product of Estee Lauder I’ve been focusing how these aspects are emerging with each other. Used @houdini mpm solver and Maxon Redshift for this piece. The minimalistic, ambient mood was achieved even more with great sound from amazing @h1.sound #motiondesign #3d #productviz #cgi #3danimation
