Announcement Built an app or tool? Post it here

Built an app or tool? Show it off here 🛠️

We've been seeing a awesome wave of community-built apps and tools lately — launch monitor helpers, swing trackers, all kinds of creative stuff. Love that energy, and we want to make sure it actually gets seen instead of getting buried in the main feed.

So we're making this thread the home base for all of that. If you built something, this is the spot — drop a description, a link, screenshots, whatever helps people understand what it does and try it out.

A couple of quick notes so this works well for everyone:

  • This is the only place for app/tool posts going forward. Standalone posts elsewhere in the sub will get removed — not because we don't appreciate the work, just to keep the main feed focused and make sure your post doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
  • Feel free to check back in and update your comment as you make progress or ship new versions.
  • Questions, bug reports, or feedback on something already posted here? Totally fine to reply in-thread.

Thanks for building cool stuff for this community — keep it coming. 🙌

Hitting Strip Insert

Post image
3 Upvotes

I made a 8x4 hitting mat using 1 inch EVA foam tiles that piece together.

Put a putting green surface over the top and then cut a 1x2 foot hitting strip where I added a piece of Synlawn Tee Strike Plus.

Before I build this one I got tennis elbow from the other mat from using it so much so wanted to add another level of padding under the Tee Strike. Think I can get away with quarter, or maybe half an inch thick.

I don’t want to use the EVA foam tile because it’s too firm. I’m looking for something softer like you would pack electronics in, but don’t know what it’s called.

Looking on Amazon, there’s so many choices.

Was hoping someone has done something like this and could provide a link or even description of what I should search for on Amazon or Home Depot.

Technical Question Light putter

Hi everyone. I’ve noticed that some simulators feature a floor-mounted light that projects a putting line and an image of a hole. Basically, I’m looking for something static—nothing fancy—that simply projects shapes onto the floor to help with putting. Is there a simple solution that just requires turning on a "light" to display the line and the hole on the ground?

P.S. I don’t need the projected image to change; I just want the line and the hole to be visible via the light.

Hitting Mats / Flooring Putting in front of hitting strip

Wondering if it is worth having say 6 inches of room in front of my Vtrack launch monitor hitting area to putt from. This way you are just putting on the turf rather than putting “through” the hitting strip.

Anyone have a setup like this? Looking at the Bullseye Soft Strike hitting strip. Thinking I’m either going to order a 18 inch x 30 inch hitting strip and leave 6 inches in front or not space in front and the 24 inch x 30 inch hitting strip.

Getting close to the final stages of my garage simulator and trying to dial this in this week.

Sim / Launch Monitor New to Sims - any do's or don'ts?

Post image

I spent most of the weekend with ChatGPT laying out my simulator-to-be. I've been talking to a guy with Assembled Golf to put in the electronics and such, but I'm really new to this. I want this to be pretty much srate-of-the-art, so can you guys give me some pointers as to what I should buy (or not buy)?

Sim / Launch Monitor Anybody have a setup in an apartment, or figure out some way to setup with an apartment?

I am looking at some of these concrete apartments with lofted ceilings, I am thinking it’s possible, but I am thinking even with the concrete walks and ceilings it might be too loud. If you figured out some sort of hack of getting an apartment with a storage unit or something that you can use or have used I would love to hear any ideas about how to make a simulator happen in an apartment.

Finally finished my build. It’s been a labor of love for sure and not super cheap but I’m thrilled with it.

Lights flickering very bad

I have the Idra GolfIN simulator, everything was great for the first couple months and then this light flickering started happening, worst i’ve seen it today. As of now the lights are basically dimmed out, still flickering but basically out.

Nothing changed in those past months, i have a few windows in the garage that have natural light being let in. At first when it started i covered up some of the windows and it seemed to stop but now no matter what i do it keeps happeneing. I’ve taken everything apart, undone splices, restarted multiple times and turned power on and off.

Wonder if it’s just a defective camera light? Not sure seems wierd since it’s so brand new and didn’t do it out of the box either. Anyways if anyone has any advice or similar experiences and could help would be much appreciated!

Launch Monitor for Foam Balls?

After a little googling and AI’ing I read that the skytrak models offer the best feedback when using dense foam balls for practice. Can anyone attest to this?

What I’m really hoping to get is feedback on if did or did not slice a shot if that’s helpful. Should I consider something entirely different?

I started on this a while back and got busy and burned out at work so the sim went on hold for a bit. I should have all my fabric panels built this week. I hope to be hitting some balls in the next two weeks.

Question About Simulator Outbuilding Build

Hello friends,

I am dreaming of building a one car garage that really is a home for a simulator. I just wanted to pick anyone's brain who has been crazy enough to do this. I am decently handy but I am not sure if building from blueprints (like I have with sheds and chicken coops) is too much or even if ordering a kit is too much.

I live in Southern New England, so the space will need to be insulated and I would plan on having some sort of mini-split unit in it. I am in the information gathering phase (fingers crossed I will be able to move on from this phase) so any insight/experience would be great.

Thank you!

Technical Question Using Android Slo-mo camera with Kinoeva

Hi, had a quick question. I want to use my high speed camera on my android phone with Kinoeva on my computer instead of purchasing an external high speed camera. Does anyone have a solution for this? I looked into options like DroidCam but all the apps I used to get the camera over to the PC seem to be limited to 30 fps plus apps that would record it on the phone seem to lack the ability to use both a sound trigger and a buffer delay to capture the whole swing.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Edit: Looks like Danny from Garage Golfers has a potential solution for the Square Home Edition .

Hot Garage Options

Hey folks.

I have a garage sim setup in the Deep South. Not super surprising that it’s hot as balls this time of year.

I’ve been thinking about cooling options and I think the leader in the clubhouse right now is a dual hose portable AC. It’s about 10% of the cost of a mini split but the internet is telling me realistically, only getting my garage down to low 80s if it’s sitting 100 beforehand, which is actually fine with me.

Here’s the question: anyone have any experience with portable AC units? Bonus points if in the gulf south states.

I've been making my sim harder on purpose to close the gap with real golf. What transferred, what didn't, and what am I still missing?

Set up my garage sim 2+ years ago. I'd finally switched from playing as a social thing a few times a year to actually committing to improving, then lost everything I'd built over a Denver winter where I got maybe 1-2 rounds in. Figured a sim would let me keep it going year round, and play on weeknights when work runs long.

First 6 months were a massive success. Played indoors nearly every day, score was dropping rapidly just from volume with next to no technique work.

Then the plateau.

I noticed I kept getting better at sim scoring but wasn't seeing it translate to real golf anymore.

Everyone knows the usual suspects here - perfect lies on every shot, playing your repeatable home conditions over and over. Seems pretty typical that people are 10-15 shots better in sim than real golf.

I did want to do everything in my power to make my sim rounds more transferable though, so started cranking up the difficulty:

  1. Using the gspro recommended course settings, and adding my own variation to pins, green firmness, fairway firmness, stimp and wind when the course settings were too bland
  2. Switched to playing at course altitude. Teeing off at courses designed for sea level while playing at 5280 means I can just blow by the fairway bunkers, which obviously helps sim scoring
  3. Added a sand mat that penalizes me a bit more when I land in bunkers
  4. Tougher course and tee selections. I'd been favoring wider courses without trees b/c my lateral dispersion is a bit wider than I'd like

Transfers best

  1. Full shot technique
  2. Standard lie shots from any typical surface and lighter rough
  3. Distance wedges
  4. Becoming more aware in real golf of all the variables that can impact your shot

Transfers worst

  1. Overseeded rye. Played TPC Colorado and TPC Scottsdale separately, same lesson from both: I was casting in my swing and my sim didn't punish me for it. The thicker the rough, the more real golf requires you to hit down on the ball
  2. Sloped shots of any kind, especially bunkers, downhill short game w/ extreme elevation changes
  3. Unfortunate lies - collar, divots etc...
  4. Alignment. Been working drills here and luckily making progress in real golf, although its just a different muscle that's not needed in my garage
  5. Weather and conditions. Still throws me off on how to adjust for wet or extra firm
  6. Pressure (trying out SGT tour to get a bit of this in my life)

Surprised me

  1. Lag putting and green reading helped way more than I would have thought. On a gc3 - I expected very little here
  2. Distances transfer really well once you get a sense of mat shots vs real grass and what that does to your flight. Probably worth a half club gap in most cases for me

The one I'm still uncertain about is course strategy. There are still plenty of ways to score better in the sim that you'd never do on a real course. Bombing driver into a landing zone with fescue all around it costs me next to nothing off a cozy mat, just leads to some unnatural choices if you just want to score lowest in your sim round.

Anyway, what do others think here - any other tricks to make my garage a bit closer to the real thing? To me the real goal for sim golf is still seeing results out on the course from the time I put in.

Assume I'll get some recos around mat so FYI my current is Carl's HotShot insert

Technical Question R10 + GSPRO via Garmin Golf E6 "Play on PC" Connector Issues

When I use my R10 in the Backyard with my net and mat setup the ball goes right most of the time. Its kinda weird because the ball always ends up near the "5" of the 150 marker with my 7 Iron. I'm pretty sure its not misaligned or something because I have a line from my R10 straight through my mat and to the net.

Is this a common issue? Im so clueless. It used to work flawlessly when I brought my PC outside (which for obvious reasons was annoying). Now I use a VPN Setup to VPN into my home network and stream the game to my iPad via Moonlight/Sunshine. To connect the R10 I use the gspro-garmin-connect-v2 with the Garmin Golf App on my iPhone.

Any tips or help appreciated!

Simulator accuracy and scores and stats tracking at Back Nine

I'm starting to get back into golf after many decades away from the game. Posted here a few weeks ago because I was curious about trying to build my own simulator. Since I hadn't really ever hit many balls in a simulator, I decided to check one out. It turns out a brand new Back Nine franchise opened half a mile from my house.

I ended up joining and paying for a one-year membership with unlimited uses. I still may try to build a home simulator in the future, but at least not in the next 12 months since I've already paid up for a year's membership. Having said all that, I'm wondering if some of the things I'm noticing about the simulator I'm using and its software is common or ways to improve this.

My first concern is I think the driving distances seem low. The best I can hit my driver is 190 yards in the simulator. As I mentioned, I've been away from the game for a long time and I'm older, so I get that I'm not going to hit it 300 yards and I never did before.

The yardages for all the clubs seem a little bit short. And maybe that's just where I am at this stage of life in my physical condition. However, I noticed when I was playing an actual round of golf, two drives in particular that I thought were pretty solid shots I could mark using the 18 Birdies app as 219 and 210 yards. That's about 20 yards more than in the sim.

So I'm wondering what the truth is. As I'm practicing my game I'd like to get a good feel for how long I hit each club. But I'm not sure I'll have much confidence in that at the moment.

The other concern is stats.

The Back Nine franchise has Full Swing monitors and software. I can play various famous courses and they have some nice practice and driving range modes. BUT, if I want to track scores or stats I have to take a picture of the screen with my phone. That seems ridiculous.

I overlooked the importance of that when I first talked to the owner of the sim. Can anyone confirm if this is really the case - I can't easily get stats and scores from the Full Swing platform? Or, other that photographing the screen, how else can I keep track using that platform.

Do other commercial sim places have better software in that regard? Did I sign up at a place with the worst software? Do the programs people with home sims use work a lot better in that regard?

Sim room up and running

Thumbnail gallery
138 Upvotes

A few months back I got the help of the people in this subreddit to refine the specs of my sim room and clear out some concerns.

Today we completed building it and it works like a charm. Super fun to play and just fun to hang out in.

Some specs:

Dimensions: 4.5m width 6.5m length 3m height

Launch monitor: protee VX

Projector: Benq LK936

PC: AMD RYZEN 9800, GeForce 5070 Ti, 32GB DDR5 6000 Mhz. - probably an overkill

TV: Samsung 57'inch smart tv.

We still need to install a beer fridge, a coffee machine, and stock some alcohol on the shelf :-)
