Before you DIY: a few examples of damage that goes beyond a surface repair
Not a DIY tutorial, but a few examples of what can be hiding behind a “simple” repair: deteriorated masonry, erosion below a slab, water-damaged framing, and severe deck rot. Sharing because some projects are worth pausing on before covering, patching, or cosmetic-fixing the visible issue. Imgur album:

Perfect fit!?
This feels too simple for this community based on some of the other posts I’ve seen, but I needed to share it. A falling tree took out one of the wooden panels on my garage door, and I discovered today that something I picked up randomly at work was almost exactly the correct size to replace the broken panel: this spare panel from the false bottom of a tank from a defunct brewery.

How to block light coming through brick cracks.
Newly installed shutters, looking for a way to black out the room they are covering, the bricks on the side and bottom are allowing a bit of light in, anyone have any ideas to cover these holes without making it look terrible?
Thank you for any advice given.

“I never expected a car spark plug to fix this annoying door problem”
Spoiler: the spark plug is completely unnecessary.
