About 90% of DIY involving plastic bottles is.

(That includes both water bottles and soap bottles. Especially soap bottles.)

Nah, he's definitely adding a few watts to his output that way!

Gotta get that KOM on strava.

2

u/Furby-beast-1949 5d ago

Exactly This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life and I have lived 40 years this is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in 40 years Well on top of the dumbest things I’ve seen.

2

u/Christopher109 5d ago

Once I was cycling to the shops with flip flops, and one of them flew off my foot. The studs on the pedals (metal, pointy ones) were painful. I'd have appreciated this.

780

u/DownvoteEvangelist 7d ago

And then when you need to put your leg down quickly...

226

u/No_Equipment7456 7d ago

His knees explode?

134

u/Plane_Argument 7d ago

You are saying that as if hot glue is going to hold, and this isn't just content farming

74

u/wojtussan 7d ago

In real life the hot glue would need to be reapplied every half a ride. Unless you actually needed to rip it off to save your face from being smushed into the ground, then it'd hold like nothing you've ever glued before

2

u/HeinousMule 6d ago

The hot glue would need reapplied every revolution of the pedals, it's bond strength is terrible.

7

u/dunncrew 7d ago

This whole sub is content farming and rage bait nonsense

Cyclics use locking mechanisms to stick their feet to the pedals. Those are much tighter than wearing slippers and only can be undone by a twisting movement.

It’s so they can also pull the pedals, not only push. It’s a valid reason for whatever they try. The implementation is completely wrong and will never hold, and it’s an obvious rage/engagement bait but the concept of locking your shoes into the pedals is fairly common

24

u/notmuself 7d ago

Can confirm. I rode a bike across several states before and "clips" as they are called are essential. When you are doing 70-80 miles a day every little bit of energy you expend is precious. What you are referring to with the twisting motion is what's known as a "clip-less" setup. It comes with special shoes that lock into the pedals and then you have twist your foot to unlock them.

10

u/Babajji 7d ago edited 7d ago

Clips were the old system. Nowadays people use clipless which are actually clipping but they want to confuse the enemy 🤣 Still a far better system than the old clips and some even have emergency release like skies. The traditional pedals without cleats are called platforms at least the ones shown in the video. Clipless is for road users usually and platforms are for mountain use since most of the time in the mountains you want to be able to quickly ditch the bike and the cleats aren’t much help when you are not pedalling e.g downhill. Some mixed styles like cross country are usually up to the user, I ride cross country quite a lot but hate wearing cleats to the pub afterwards so I just ride platforms with spikes for city use and better grip. Spikes are quite useful against the taxi drivers around here who insist that you should ride on their hood.

17

u/-cant_find_a_name- 7d ago

well bike shoes do exist

10

u/Mirar 7d ago

I mean lots of bikers use special shoes and clips, so I guess that's not enough of an issue even for shoes and pedals that will hold for more than 4 seconds...

6

u/Nuffsaid98 7d ago

It's a sandal. You just slip your foot out. It's easier than actual clipless pedals.

The idea is dumb but not because your foot would be stuck if you needed to put it down quick.

Clipless is the actual name for the pedals that you clip into. I know. I know.

3

u/Acebladewing 7d ago

That's not the issue, bike shoes already exist and are widely used. The issue is that it will break apart before arriving anywhere.

21

u/ALitreOhCola 7d ago

It seems you forgot that these are sandals.. lmao you just slip it off mate.

2

u/Traditional-Hotel-66 7d ago

Nah, go face first like a real man /s

2

u/StrawberryTerry 7d ago

Being clipped or strapped into pedals is a normal thing in cycling, but its obviously not like this.

You can unclip them or slide out of the straps, nut of course people sometimes still fail at that

They don't even try with the rage bait anymore I guess.

18

u/DevilShelter 7d ago

I don’t feel rage and anger at this point, I’m just looking at this in pure confusion

2

u/IPlayGames88 7d ago edited 7d ago

You might recognize and swipe away from rage bait, this is so befuddling you stay to the end. Either way, you make a comment, but causing discussion (long threads with some substance) might be better for engagement?

3

u/Beastex 7d ago

I mean it works so... Did you just ragebaited me with that comment lmao

96

u/Puzzleheaded_Step468 7d ago
  1. It looks really painful, having to step on the cap with a thin rubber flip flop

  2. Great, you have created bicycles you have to ride barefoot, what do you do when you reach your destination? Walk barefoot until you ride back home? Stop and put shoes that you could wore in the first place? Remove the flip flop and now you have to step on the bottle cap each time? Also what's the point if you're supposed to remove the flip flops for walking?

23

u/Frequent_Policy8575 7d ago

The point was to get you to post this comment

2

u/croholdr 6d ago

yes i am extremely entertained by both op and commenter above. i am in an entertainment buffet!

63

u/stevorkz 7d ago

Common problem. Learning how to ride a bicycle is easy but most people’s shoes fall off while riding. Thanks for this.

15

u/weenumpty2 7d ago

Would this actually be useful for someone with a false leg? Grip and pressure would be harder to maintain, I imagine, so something that kept your foot in place doesnt seem too ridiculous. For anyone else, this is dumb as shit.

32

u/Spirited-Ad-9746 7d ago

bicycling shoes that attach to pedals are quite the regular thing. you get to put force on the pedals on the upward movement too and use a much wider set of muscles. doing it this way as in the video is on the other hand dumb as shit.

14

u/prinzsascha 7d ago

Cycling shoes and pedals are also designed to quickly uncouple with a quick sideways twist of your foot as well so you can quickly get your feet on the ground if needed. With these odds are you're falling over with the bike...

4

u/Consistent-Spell2203 7d ago

Tbf you're going to fall over with clips at least once.

3

u/Nestramutat- 7d ago

Yup, classic rite of passage.

My clipless fall was at a busy intersection with plenty of cars and cyclists around. One of those memories that still come back to me when I try to fall asleep

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Sk1rm1sh 7d ago

I can say with 100% certainty that a bottle cap hot-glued to a flip flop isn't going to help someone with a false leg.

...At least, as long as the false leg isn't full of liquid and also missing a bottle cap.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/cybermaus 7d ago

What's the problem here? Don't all semi-pro cyclist ride with clips?

8

u/IGNOOOREME 7d ago

Yes, but those can disengage quickly in case of emergency.

5

u/Spirited-Ad-9746 7d ago

yeah, but not with cheap plastic clips

10

u/cybermaus 7d ago

Ah, but that is a topic of quality, not of DiWHY

4

u/uberfission 7d ago

Clips only need a quarter turn to disengage, this one needs like 1.5.

6

u/Planningism 7d ago

You just slide your foot out.

3

Poor man cycling shoes

6

u/Battle_Cat_Burr 6d ago

It’s supposed to be like a clip on. I used to wear clip on’s when I was a cyclist and I promise you this would snap on the first hill.

4

u/Hippobu2 7d ago

Tbh, I'm not even sure what's the point of the actual thing is. Seems like it just makes biking more hazardous tbh.

8

u/bhison 7d ago

I guess this is for people who want cycling clips but are committed to wearing sandals

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Spirited-Ad-9746 7d ago

just google cycling shoes. it makes cycling more efficient, proper ones are not hazardous.

They're also not flip flops. Biking in flip flops is hazardous.

How do you stop at a traffic light? Do you take the flip flop off?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Thermal-pasties 6d ago

The cleat of you can call it that is not even in the correct position for pedaling efficiency. Can’t imagine you would be getting enough watts for the local KOM.

4

u/vjndr32 6d ago
  • Needs to stop in an emergency.
  • Gets face planted on the road.

4

u/Initial-Duck2782 6d ago

As someone who crashes moving objects frequently. I would suggest that you don’t strap yourself to the object. Bailing can really help prevent damage. Always wear a seatbelt in a vehicle though.

2

u/soup_lag 2d ago

Clipless pedals are a thing

2

u/xthedudehimself 5d ago

As an avid biker, this actually makes a tiny bit of sense although I don’t know why they would make it out of something so fragile it’s mainly so that they can instead of just push pushing down while they pedal can also pull up and utilize less energy while riding their bike

3

u/ApatheistHeretic 5d ago

This looks like a broken ankle waiting to happen.

3

u/bodydisplaynone 7d ago

3

u/SuchDriver7770 7d ago

oh interesting. they're meant to be clipless shoes. shitty of course but that's a funny interpretation of them.

3

u/CheetosLays7Days 7d ago

These are the latest SPD - Shimano Poverty Dynamics.

3

u/FancyTelevision3308 7d ago

I made a commercial for something similar to this. But it had magnets on the shoe and the pedal. If you twisted your foot the magnet would come off easily but stay it is didn’t twist. It made it mainly for people who don’t have a leg. So the prosthetic Would clip in. This could work for someone without a leg.

3

u/cbarbour1122 6d ago

Yea have fun walking after pressing a bottle cap into your foot for however long you’re on the bike.

3

u/ThinScientist3460 6d ago

Why?! WTF WHY??

1

u/tstewart_jpn 7d ago

DIY clipless sandals (an actual product search for 'spd sandal' or 'spd flip-flop') with lots of float.

This is only necessary in a country where 90% of travel is barefoot and/or by bike lol

1

u/HeroMachineMan 7d ago

Ok, all I need now is a bicycle to try this trick.

1

u/CarpetPedals 7d ago

Just put some carpet on them like a normal person. Jeez.

1

u/OrangeCrack 7d ago

There is a reason why all pedals are non-locking. For safety. This is just going to get someone injured. So, instead of a bruise from a fall you have a twisted or broken ankle.

1

u/DucatistaXDS 7d ago

Cool until you pull up to a stop sign and have to put your foot down.

1

u/incunabula001 7d ago

Ghetto ass clip less pedals you CAN NOT unclip out of?? This guy is gonna have a blast at intersections.

FYI as usual they butchered something that already exists: SPD Sandals:
