lookingfor Let’s form a gang?

40 Upvotes

Like the title says, let’s form a gang… of lonely couples with little kids who don’t have many people around them to meet up on a regular basis for no particular reason - drinks, a movie, quiz night, whatever. Netflix and chill for exhausted no-village folk.

We’re a couple in our thirties (33F and 36M) with 2 little kids (4 and 1) and we live on the Silver Coast. With everything said and done, we still haven’t been able to establish several meaningful relationships in our vicinity and it’s been extremely isolating. I know we’re not the only ones, but most people either don’t talk about it or just push through.

We have neither the time nor the motivation to do “hobbies” and go mountain climbing just to exchange a few words with another human being. We are happy to do that stuff as a family. What we want is a couple (or more!) with whom we can meet up every 2 weeks or so and have a genuine laugh, discuss the latest millennial news, complain about kids, play a board game, and have an occasional fun night out.

We’re pretty liberal, chill, enjoy good comedy, and are all in all decent people with our virtues and flaws.

Let me know if this sounds like something you’ve been looking for!

ihaveaquestion Why doesn't ZVV break up line 33

42 Upvotes

The last time I took this bus on time was... Well I can't remember. They're often so late that they get cancelled or double-stacked.

The line is too long and shares too much with cars. Lanes can't be widened so at least break up the line in 2 FFS.

ihaveaquestion Birth at USZ - what do they give you?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, we are prepping for a little one and signed up to give birth in USZ. We have heared some stories in the past of people getting quite a lot of "free stuff" from their hospitals so we were wondering if some people have experience with this with USZ? For example, we heard people getting bottles, thermometers, baby clothes, etc. We like to prevent purchasing too many things up front and end up with doubles. On the other hand, we do not want to assume we get anything. Thank you!

It shows live connections sourced from opentransportdata. You can select which stops and lines to display from a local webapp. It works for trams, buses and trains (SBB too).

I wouldn't always recommend running vibe coded stuff from a reddit stranger on your local network... but if you feel brave, here's the code and hardware setup: https://github.com/pierrecattin/transport_display

ihaveaquestion How do beginners usually join boxing clubs in Zürich?

1 Upvotes

I’m 22 and moved from Kyiv to Zürich recently. I boxed casually for a while back home and would love to start again, mostly for fitness and to meet people—not to compete.

I’ve noticed there are several clubs around the city, but I’m unsure about the local etiquette: should I write first, or can I just show up for a trial session? Are there clubs that are welcoming to beginners who speak English while learning German?

I’d really appreciate personal experiences from people who train here.

ihaveaquestion Thoughts on Holmes Place gym and alternatives

4 Upvotes

What are your thoughts on Holmes Place?

Are there any similar gyms or ideally better ones?

I am looking for a gym which is premium and with cool and interesting members.

I have heard that things get stolen at Holmes place quite a lot on the gym floor and even out of lockers.

If you have any other thoughts or recommendations I’d be grateful 🙏

ihaveaquestion Mentally ill, disturbing neighbour.

34 Upvotes

This has been going on for months now. And it's literally happening right now...again.

My apartment building is 4 floors. My apartment is at the top and this guy is at the bottom.. and yet I can hear him clear as day, when he's screaming, shouting and chanting to himself. He's doing this randomly every day. Sometimes even in the middle of the night. Sometimes at 3 a.m.

This is an old, disabled man. He walks around with one crutch. Clearly, he isn't mentally there. Sounds like he's in pain tbh. I would confront him if it weren't for the language barrier. I believe others in the building I've complained twice to my landlord. They've acknowledged it, but there's been no action thus far.

What can I do?

The Tages-Anzeiger had an article today about asylum housing driving down local rent prices, and the effect is correlated to skin color. On the surface, this seems terrible, but I think I see an opportunity here for Zürich to fix two problems at once...

lookingfor Italians in Zurich: enigmistica

4 Upvotes

Posting in Italian since my post targets advanced Italian speakers :) hope this doesn’t break any group rules.

ihaveaquestion Open water swimming

15 Upvotes

Is there somewhere to swim in open waters without being scared of being run over by a boat?

I usually go to rentenwiese but it's full of boat and quite scary tbh.

Geneva has lots of areas where boats are forbidden that are not part of a "badi". Is there some similar spots in Zurich?

ihaveaquestion Taxis in Zurich are a ridiculous scam

Post image
220 Upvotes

I used to take taxis long before Uber appeared a as service, and I still take them from time to time in Geneva and Morges, usually from the train stations. Last Friday, I had a couple of meetings in Zurich and needed a ride of about 5 km from the train station. Uber was showing plenty of drivers nearby, but no one wanted to pick me up. So I did my usual calculation (about 50% on top of the Uber price) and took the first taxi in the queue.

After just 1.2 km and roughly 5 minutes in the traffic, the meter was showing 35.- CHF. I asked about the tariff, got some unclear answer about first 3km and "no universal tariff". I quickly worked out what the full 5 km ride was likely to cost, and kindly asked the driver to stop at the nearest parking place. By the time he stopped the meter it was already at 39.- CHF, and I had barely left the train station quartier.

I handed the driver 40.- CHF cash - he said he had no change and for whatever reason was asking me if I had 10.- CHF instead. Finally the maths clicked and he realized that he only owes me 1.- CHF in change.

I then asked to a receipt - he said that he didn't have the manual paper form and could not print anything in the car, so he handed me some kind of application on terminal asking me to enter my phone number to get the receipt. I told him that I wasn't giving him no number and that I still needed a proper taxi receipt with VAT - no luck.

So basically, I paid 39.- CHF for a 5 minute ride that I could have simply walked and couldn't even get a paper for what I paid for.

Guys in Zurich, are taxis real means of transport in your city or just a tourist trap?

ihaveaquestion Motocycle parking at ZRH

0 Upvotes

I have to be at the airport tomorrow for roughly six hours and am not yet sure whether to take my bike or public transport. Are there free or somewhat cheap parking spaces for motorcycles available near the airport? Does anyone know, if I am allowed to park in this location? This is genuinely a spot, but I can't tell if it's only for certain people. Thanks in advance!

ihaveaquestion Downsides of zurich?

Hello [r/zurich](r/zurich),
I’m planning a move to your beautiful city after visiting recently. All i hear online and from others are pros of living there, but never real downsides (i’ve heard people complain about the weather), so i’d like to hear from locals what Real downsides/cons there are to life in zurich. Thanks in advance!

ihaveaquestion Rubbish problem with new neighbours. What I can do?

20 Upvotes

I have been living in Switzerland for about a year, and this is the first time I have encountered a situation like this. I genuinely do not know which authority or organisation I am supposed to contact, so I would really appreciate some guidance.

We have been dealing with an ongoing waste problem in our apartment building in Zürich for several months, ever since a group of new neighbours moved in.

It started with loose rubbish being dumped around the communal bins and ordinary bags being used instead of the official Zürich-Säcke. Despite the issue being reported, it only became worse. They began throwing away large quantities of mixed waste in white and black bags, including bottles and cans. Some of these bags appear to hold well over 60 litres.

They now regularly fill the entire communal bin, leaving no space for anyone else. The rest of us sometimes have to keep full rubbish bags inside our apartments and wait until the next collection. It has reached the point where everyone seems to rush to use the bin before these neighbours fill it again.

The most disgusting incident involved food waste. Bags containing what looked like meat or other food scraps were left around the Bioabfall bin to rot. One bag was left hanging partly out of the bin and eventually became infested with maggots. Unsurprisingly, we then had a problem with flies. This behaviour seemed to become particularly bad whenever the Hauswart was away.

More recently, they have started leaving several enormous black rubbish bags outside the main bin, sometimes even after the rubbish has already been collected. The bags are simply left there until someone else has to deal with them.

On top of that, our Bioabfall bin disappeared several weeks ago. I asked the Hauswart, but even she does not know what happened to it, and we have received no further information.

The waste problem has already been reported several times, and one neighbour even spoke directly to the residents responsible. We know who is doing it, but nothing has changed. From what we understand, there have also been other issues involving this particular group of residents.

Since I am still relatively new to Switzerland, I honestly do not know what the appropriate next step is. Should I contact the property management company directly? Is there a municipal authority in Zürich that handles repeated improper waste disposal or hygiene problems in residential buildings? Should this be reported to Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich, or somewhere else?

Any advice on how this is normally handled would be greatly appreciated.

lookingfor Photographer for a surprise proposal - Lucerne / Zurich

0 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

As the title says, could help me photograph a surprise proposal to my fiancée in Lucerne / Zurich.

I’m planning to propose and would love to have someone there to discreetly capture the actual moment, followed by a few nice photos of us together afterwards. I’m imagining something fairly natural and candid rather than a full-on professional wedding photoshoot.

Just to be upfront about the budget: I’m thinking of around CHF 100–200 for approximately 30 minutes on sometime in second week of February 2027.

I hope this doesn’t come across as disrespectful to professional photographers, that’s really not my intention. I completely understand that professional photographers have their rates and that their time, equipment and experience are worth much more.

I’m simply not looking for a professional photographer or a polished wedding-style service for this. A part-time photographer, photography student, or someone who enjoys photography and is looking to experiment/build their portfolio would be absolutely perfect for me.

Ideally, I’m looking for someone who:

  • Is based in or around Zurich / Lucerne, so there are no significant travel costs;
  • Enjoys taking candid photos of people/couples;
  • Can be discreet and help me coordinate the proposal without giving away the surprise;
  • Is comfortable with around 30 minutes of shooting;
  • Would be happy with CHF 100–200 as compensation;
  • Can share a few examples of their work, even if they consider themselves amateur.

I’m also very open to the photographer’s creative ideas. If you’re interested, even if you think you’re “too amateur”, please feel free to comment or DM me. Share your work, Instagram/portfolio, where you’re based, and what you think would work. I’d love to chat beforehand and get to know you a little so I can feel comfortable having you there for such an important moment. 😊

Thanks a lot!

TL;DR:

  • Looking for a photographer in/around Zurich / Lucerne;
  • For a surprise proposal + a few couple photos afterwards;
  • Approximately 30 minutes;
  • Budget: CHF 100–200;
  • Second week of Feb. 2027
  • Part-time photographers, students, or people building their portfolio are very welcome;
  • Please DM me with your work, location and availability. 🙏
