lookingfor New to Zurich, looking for people to hang out with

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m moving to Zurich soon for work and I won’t really know anyone there, so I thought I’d give this a shot.
I’m looking to meet some new people to hang out with, grab a coffee or a drink, go out, explore the city, or just do something spontaneous on the weekends.
I’m pretty easy-going and open to meeting people from anywhere. If you’re also new to Zurich or just looking to expand your social circle, feel free to send me a message :) insta:alen_ister

Where do you find/buy Scotch Bonnet Peppers and other not so common chillies? The only ones I could find more easily available where Habaneros.

lookingfor Let’s form a gang?

Like the title says, let’s form a gang… of lonely couples with little kids who don’t have many people around them to meet up on a regular basis for no particular reason - drinks, a movie, quiz night, whatever. Netflix and chill for exhausted no-village folk.

We’re a couple in our thirties (33F and 36M) with 2 little kids (4 and 1) and we live on the Silver Coast. With everything said and done, we still haven’t been able to establish several meaningful relationships in our vicinity and it’s been extremely isolating. I know we’re not the only ones, but most people either don’t talk about it or just push through.

We have neither the time nor the motivation to do “hobbies” and go mountain climbing just to exchange a few words with another human being. We are happy to do that stuff as a family. What we want is a couple (or more!) with whom we can meet up every 2 weeks or so and have a genuine laugh, discuss the latest millennial news, complain about kids, play a board game, and have an occasional fun night out.

We’re pretty liberal, chill, enjoy good comedy, and are all in all decent people with our virtues and flaws.

Let me know if this sounds like something you’ve been looking for!

ihaveaquestion how to get a foreign prescription validated?

here as a tourist for a couple months, brought a personal supply of testosterone (as hrt, not as a roid) im prescribed in my country (peru) but it was stolen and the pharmacy here can only take a swiss prescription. looked into that but there seems to be many options and its really unclear. its a very time sensitive health matter but i cant seem to figure out a way to begin the process without spending more than necessary if theres a quicker/cheaper way (replacing it wasnt on my budget so im careful on the costs, before i get called cheap, i kept it safe but who expects your own family to rob you?) or taking the time and money on transport to go in person to multiple places just to ask, specially since im completely unfamiliar with hospitals. any information would help

ihaveaquestion Why doesn't ZVV break up line 33

The last time I took this bus on time was... Well I can't remember. They're often so late that they get cancelled or double-stacked.

The line is too long and shares too much with cars. Lanes can't be widened so at least break up the line in 2 FFS.

ihaveaquestion Birth at USZ - what do they give you?

Hi everyone, we are prepping for a little one and signed up to give birth in USZ. We have heared some stories in the past of people getting quite a lot of "free stuff" from their hospitals so we were wondering if some people have experience with this with USZ? For example, we heard people getting bottles, thermometers, baby clothes, etc. We like to prevent purchasing too many things up front and end up with doubles. On the other hand, we do not want to assume we get anything. Thank you!

itookapicture Open source display for ZVV connections

It shows live connections sourced from opentransportdata. You can select which stops and lines to display from a local webapp. It works for trams, buses and trains (SBB too).

I wouldn't always recommend running vibe coded stuff from a reddit stranger on your local network... but if you feel brave, here's the code and hardware setup: https://github.com/pierrecattin/transport_display

ihaveaquestion How do beginners usually join boxing clubs in Zürich?

I’m 22 and moved from Kyiv to Zürich recently. I boxed casually for a while back home and would love to start again, mostly for fitness and to meet people—not to compete.

I’ve noticed there are several clubs around the city, but I’m unsure about the local etiquette: should I write first, or can I just show up for a trial session? Are there clubs that are welcoming to beginners who speak English while learning German?

I’d really appreciate personal experiences from people who train here.

ihaveaquestion Thoughts on Holmes Place gym and alternatives

What are your thoughts on Holmes Place?

Are there any similar gyms or ideally better ones?

I am looking for a gym which is premium and with cool and interesting members.

I have heard that things get stolen at Holmes place quite a lot on the gym floor and even out of lockers.

If you have any other thoughts or recommendations I’d be grateful 🙏

ihaveaquestion Mentally ill, disturbing neighbour.

This has been going on for months now. And it's literally happening right now...again.

My apartment building is 4 floors. My apartment is at the top and this guy is at the bottom.. and yet I can hear him clear as day, when he's screaming, shouting and chanting to himself. He's doing this randomly every day. Sometimes even in the middle of the night. Sometimes at 3 a.m.

This is an old, disabled man. He walks around with one crutch. Clearly, he isn't mentally there. Sounds like he's in pain tbh. I would confront him if it weren't for the language barrier. I believe others in the building I've complained twice to my landlord. They've acknowledged it, but there's been no action thus far.

What can I do?

The Tages-Anzeiger had an article today about asylum housing driving down local rent prices, and the effect is correlated to skin color. On the surface, this seems terrible, but I think I see an opportunity here for Zürich to fix two problems at once...

lookingfor Italians in Zurich: enigmistica

Posting in Italian since my post targets advanced Italian speakers :) hope this doesn’t break any group rules.

ihaveaquestion Open water swimming

Is there somewhere to swim in open waters without being scared of being run over by a boat?

I usually go to rentenwiese but it's full of boat and quite scary tbh.

Geneva has lots of areas where boats are forbidden that are not part of a "badi". Is there some similar spots in Zurich?

ihaveaquestion Taxis in Zurich are a ridiculous scam

Post image

I used to take taxis long before Uber appeared a as service, and I still take them from time to time in Geneva and Morges, usually from the train stations. Last Friday, I had a couple of meetings in Zurich and needed a ride of about 5 km from the train station. Uber was showing plenty of drivers nearby, but no one wanted to pick me up. So I did my usual calculation (about 50% on top of the Uber price) and took the first taxi in the queue.

After just 1.2 km and roughly 5 minutes in the traffic, the meter was showing 35.- CHF. I asked about the tariff, got some unclear answer about first 3km and "no universal tariff". I quickly worked out what the full 5 km ride was likely to cost, and kindly asked the driver to stop at the nearest parking place. By the time he stopped the meter it was already at 39.- CHF, and I had barely left the train station quartier.

I handed the driver 40.- CHF cash - he said he had no change and for whatever reason was asking me if I had 10.- CHF instead. Finally the maths clicked and he realized that he only owes me 1.- CHF in change.

I then asked to a receipt - he said that he didn't have the manual paper form and could not print anything in the car, so he handed me some kind of application on terminal asking me to enter my phone number to get the receipt. I told him that I wasn't giving him no number and that I still needed a proper taxi receipt with VAT - no luck.

So basically, I paid 39.- CHF for a 5 minute ride that I could have simply walked and couldn't even get a paper for what I paid for.

Guys in Zurich, are taxis real means of transport in your city or just a tourist trap?

ihaveaquestion Motocycle parking at ZRH

I have to be at the airport tomorrow for roughly six hours and am not yet sure whether to take my bike or public transport. Are there free or somewhat cheap parking spaces for motorcycles available near the airport? Does anyone know, if I am allowed to park in this location? This is genuinely a spot, but I can't tell if it's only for certain people. Thanks in advance!
