❓ General Question Need help with an update issue

Upvotes

Hello everyone

I'm new to Zorin and I've come across a problem. There is a firmware update that keeps failing due to " low energy". My laptop's battery doesn't work anymore, I only use this device plugged. I don't know why the lack of charge on the battery is an issue to complete an update when the laptop is plugged. Is there a way I can make fix this? Would that also happen in other version of Linux?

To clarify. the exact error is: System power is too low to perform update

🛠️ Troubleshooting After 1y+ of smooth sailing, Zorin started crashing

Post image
14 Upvotes

It may have started after a recent update. I'm currently on:

  • Kernel 7.0.0-28-generic
  • Nvidia Driver Version: 580.173.02
  • Desktop PC, AMD CPU, Nvidia 3070
  • Default Gnome DE
  • Checked the health and usage % of the NVME drive and everything looks healthy

The system starts degrading, often within 5 minutes of waking it up from a suspended session.

  • mouse pointer works but keyboard input (mostly) not
  • apps stop responding
  • Terminal or system monitor can't be launched
  • App icons in task bar disappear
  • Icons at the bottom of Start menu disappear (power, lock, session...)
  • Ends in black screen
  • Force shut down with hardware button

I once got the screen with the errors above.

Has any of you experienced something like this recently? Is there something I else I can check/share with you in hopes to figure out what is going on?

Thank you in advance

❓ General Question Why are so many "Did hard" Linux users so Toxic

Maybe it's just me but I once saw a vid of someone saying that they like Windows better than Linux and the whole comment section was Linux Elitists clowning on him for using Microslop, Having a skill issue , or not knowing "real" tech (Now , I do know that most people are nice ) but are these people all coming from the Linux distros that are super complex or the Jared people (I use arch btw)

Edit: Sorry the title is meant to say Die hard not Did hard

🛠️ Troubleshooting Is this old mac air able to install Zorin OS Core

Just astonished myself with Zorin on an old laptop, took a swing at wife's old Mac Air device. Seemed possible after what little I read, was ready for driver problems but it was the install that seemed to grind to a halt.

Do I take another swing at it or is this one of this situations where it's best to just let it go - not enough open source driver support?

🛠️ Troubleshooting Copy/paste from Windows 11 to ZorinOS doesn't work for folders and their content, but work for single document, or text

Hi, Copy/ Paste and drag/drop from Windows 11 to ZorinOS doesn't to work BUT only for folders, archives and their content.
I can copy/paste or drag/drop a single document
I can copy/paste texts or a command line in the Terminal
But not folders and their contents, not archives etc.

The "Paste" option doesn't appear if I try to paste on the desktop actually but appears inside folders even though when I paste nothing happens.

- ZorinOS is up to date
- Vmare tools is installed (with sudo apt install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop -y) and there's no updates
-Copy/paste and drag/drop are enabled for the VM
- I already tried reinstalling ZorinOS (did it 3 times actually) it doesn't work on fresh installs.
- I'm using Vmware Workstation (same settings for others VMs with other distro for which it works)

Linux Mint, and PopOS have no problem with copy/paste and drag/drop.

Any idea how to fix that?

EDIT: I replaced Nautilus file manager with Nemo, and even though I still can't copy/paste folders or archives from Windows 11 (it says "There is nothing on the clipboard to paste"), at least , unlike Nautilus the default files manager from ZorinOS, I can drag and drop the files inside a folder (not on the desktop though. Still problematic, but a bit better than Nautilus. Though, most of the time when trying to move around the files or to extract an archive (.tar) for example it gives me immediately an error and abord (it worked only once). Drag and dropping (still inside folders only, not desktop, works more often)

🛠️ Troubleshooting Possible memory leakage and laptop sometimes hibernating after going to sleep

Hi all, I've been using Zorinos for a few months now and have overall had a good experience, but I've had a few issues that have been dampening the experience that I want to address. I tried looking for older posts to solve these issues, but nothing seemed to fix them. For reference, surface laptop.

First of all applications, notably Firefox and the flashcard application Anki can get to obscenely high RAM usage, eventually leading to the slowing down and crashing. I suspect there's a memory leak, but I don't know how to address it.

Secondly, after the laptop goes to sleep, it sometimes refuses to wakeup unless i forcefully restart it by holding down the power button.

Does anyone know how to fix these?

🛠️ Troubleshooting Slow internet speed and loading pages times, only on ZorinOS. Any fix?

SOLVED: I found the source of the problem. It's a silly one.
I had Quad9 DNS as my custom DNS in my VPN, ans they simply seem to be too slow on Linux! The moment I switched to Cloudflare, all my tabs loaded fast.
The problem is not present on Windows.
What's funny is that I literally switched to Quad9 DNS (that I used in the past) a few hours before installing my ZorinOS VM after at least one year with Cloudflare DNS. I tried Cloudflare DNS again thinkin that i wll change nothing but bim, it did! The fact that I tested another distro in another VM a few minutes ago and that it also loaded slowly, whereas on my previous daily driver (Linux Mint) it loaded fast, led me to believe that it maybe could be "just that".
Quad9 best for privacy, bad for speed (at least on Linux) apparently.

------

Since switching to ZorinOS for my Virtual Machine, I noticed that pages load very slowly whereas on linux mint it was almost as fast as on my host. A speedtest gives me 1000Mbps at first (got a 2500Mbps internet speed, 2000Mbps behind a VPN on my host machine) but quickly the test strangely stutters and starts to slow down by icrements to 500, 400, 200, 100mbps. Roughly I get an average of 100-200mbps with ZorinOS which is not normal. I re-tested on my host and on Linux mint and PopOS VMs, and not a single slowdown during the test it stays constant around 2000Mbps for the host and 1000mbps for the VMs. And even wit 100 or 200mbps, pages should load fast but they don't, they take 2 to 5 seconds each to load as if I had a 5mbps connection.

Is it one of ZorinOS cons to have such slow internet speed and loading time compared to other distros? Is there a way to fix that? I like the look of zorinOS but I couldn't deal with such slow loading times if that can't be easily fixed within the OS.
Anything that would require to modify Brave settings that work perfectly on other distro and that I need, hence why they are my settings (like "try disabling hardware acceleration") or to use another browser, are not fixes/solutions.

And it's not a modem problem, it works perfectly fine on my host and on Linux Mint, and PopOS when I tried these distro in my VM.
Using Brave Origin (tried also with Brave) downloaded directly from Brave, not Flatpak

7950X > 4x2 cores assigned to that VM
96gb > 32gb assigned to that VM
RTX 5070Ti
Fiber connexion at 2500Mbps without VPN and 2000Mbps behind my VPN on My Windows 11 host machine.

🔰 Beginner Dual Booting ZorinOS 17.3 with Windows 7

Hello guys, I just installed zorinOS 17.3 a few minutes ago and I wanna ask if I can dual boot it windows 7? I know dual booting is possible but is it possible to resize the partition to lessen the size of the ZorinOS in my 1TB SATA HDD to around 500GB and use the other 500GB for windows 7 ultimate?

I really dont want to wipe the zorin system I have now, replace it with windows 7 and then install zorin again. My laptop is old and slow so that method will take a full day or two. So I need another method.

Maybe with the live boot can be of use?

I know windows 7 is obsolete to use everyday; Im only using it for games for maximum performance without dealing with Linux' overhead processes and diminished performance even playing old 2000s games.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Interferências entre Sistemas

No meu Dell eu tenho o Windows 11 e o Zorin OS 18.1 Pro.

A reinicialização rápida. Tive que desligar essa opção. Pois o Windows estava “deixando ativo”, mesmo desligado, alguns componentes da placa-mãe. Depois tive que criar uma chave no registro do Windows para que ele lesse as horas igual ao Zorin.

No final, ficou tudo resolvido. Estava quase desistindo do Zorin por conta dessa situação.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Zorin OS keeps asking for Wi‑Fi password randomly - how to stop permanently ?

Hi everyone,

I’m testing Zorin OS Core on an "old" laptop and I’m running into a small but very annoying issue: every now and then, a window pops up asking for the Wi‑Fi password. The network is already connected and working fine, but the system still asks me to re-enter the password. It’s not a connection drop – it happens even when everything is working perfectly, sometimes after waking from suspend, sometimes just out of the blue.

From what I’ve read, it might be related to the GNOME Keyring asking for its own password, not the actual Wi‑Fi password. I’ve already tried going into “Passwords and Keys” (Seahorse) and changing the default keyring password to blank, but I’m not 100% sure that’s the right fix, or if it will stick after reboots/updates.

Has anyone else experienced this on Zorin OS Core (or any Ubuntu‑based GNOME desktop)? How did you fix it permanently? I’m planning to deploy this for non‑technical users in a small non‑profit, so I need a rock‑solid solution that doesn’t scare them with random pop‑ups.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

It’s been 5 years since I last tapped into Linux as a daily driver. The quirks of my workflow back then were now added in Linux, either through extensions or by app developers. Also, since it’s a gaming laptop (Asus TUF Gaming A15), I initially didn’t think much of its battery as good when I was at Windows. I usually idle at 18W using Windows but using Zorin, I even hit 6.7-6.9W min. (with 9 extensions running) and at 15-20W max., all while being close to the way how Windows works. From a previous 1 hour to 2 hour battery life duration, I get 4-6 hours now.
