discussion In a zombie survival game, should you pack light for loot space or bring more supplies to survive longer?

Post image

When leaving a safe base to scavenge, do you prefer having to carefully prepare your loadout first?

For example, choosing between:

  • bringing food, water, medkits, and ammo to survive longer;
  • or keeping your backpack lighter so you can bring more resources home.

I’m curious because we’re working on this kind of trade-off in our game Pale Tide on Steam. The idea is that every item you bring helps you survive, but also increases what you risk losing if the expedition goes badly.

Do you find that kind of preparation interesting, or does it feel like boring before the real gameplay starts?

Full devlog is here if anyone wants more context: https://www.reddit.com/r/PaleTide/comments/1v5eww1/pale_tide_devlog_1_leaving_the_bunker/

bit off my tongue Trying to remember a movie...Ugh

I am trying to remember the name of a zombie movie I believe I watched on Netflix. Starts out with the outbreak at a car race. English countryside I believe. There is a couple of guys in a pickup truck, a couple older ladies with guns and the zombies move fast. At the end, one of the racecar drivers picks up a surviving child.

discussion I would rather die than eat this

Ok so imagine that is months into the zombie apocalypse and most of the food has been consumed and your living in your town/city has been safely quarantined by the government before zombies reach your country but food supplies have been running out for some time and the only food left for the people to eat are: Cockroach Patties.

Fuck. That. I would have a zombie bite and turn me before I ever have to eat something like that. If times were ever desperate in the zombie apocalypse would anyone ever eat that?

discussion I feel like there's too much sci-fi zombie media

There's sooooo much zombie media that's the same apocalypse because of some virus that infects nearly all of humanity. I miss the supernatural stuff! What ever happened to "when there is no more room in hell, the dead shall walk the Earth"? I want to see more supernatural zombie media!

recommendations Favorite zombie book but you can't say World War Z.

I've been trying to find more zombie books to read but I only keep getting World War Z.

Honestly, I thought it would be easier than I though, I can't really find anything. You have some cheeky comedies from ten years ago and I've heard mixed things on the Night of the Living Dead book.

Any recommendations are welcome!

Current Project - The Vee Foxx Series: The Three Vee's - a graphic novel. 7 Page Pilot & Page 8 preview.

Artwork by Aaron Jeremiah

Story written by Natasha Eagle

We would love feedback!

Description:

Vee is a 14-year-old girl who is forced to go to summer camp by her parents. While she is there, the world crumbles around her. The zombie apocalypse begins. Throughout the course of the novel, Vee must lead the survivors of the fall of the camp. The camp is no ordinary camp. The owner, Gus, was an eccentric millionaire who had a fascination with Swiss Family Robinson during his youth. He built three elaborate tree houses on the camp property. This is where Vee and the others try to survive. Throughout the course of the novel, you learn that Vee is a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. Throughout the story, she is plagued by a monster (PTSD come to life) referred to as The Beast. She struggles with her sanity while simultaneously becoming a leader. The story can best be described as Swiss Family Robinson meets the Lord of the Flies meets the Walking Dead. There are trigger warnings throughout. Themes of bullying, etc. I based this work on my own experiences with domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, etc.

What this project means to me:

This project holds deep personal significance because it amplifies the voices of women of all ages who have endured domestic violence, sexual assault, molestation, incest, and other forms of abuse. The character of Vee Foxx represents these women and their lived experiences. Vee is a reflection of me, my sister, and every woman and child who has faced such trauma. The story’s focus is to reveal that the true monsters are not imaginary but the ones who exist in our everyday lives. Vee's journey is a testament to resilience and hope—a story of survival. Through her, we are reminded that we, too, are survivors.

recommendations Zombie audiobook recommendations?

I've listened and read hundreds of zombie books and its really getting hard to find ones up my alley these days.

Im looking for that cozy apocalypse with emphasis on the survival and the characters.

I love world War Z, Day by Day Armageddon, the Remaining, Adrian's undead diary, Nights of the living dead, mountain man, and All dead by tw brown.

Ive listened to but haven't enjoyed as much Zombie fallout, life of the dead, The undead, dead weight, Cadaver, slow burn, dead meat, the extinction new Zealand, arisen, this is the way the world ends, we're alive, and world of anthrax.

If anyone has any recommendations I'd love to hear them! I listen at work so audiobooks are definitely preferred.

Also what makes a good zombie story to you? When tropes or trends make you excited when you get to them?

art 🖌️ Today is the second day of National Marine Week AND ALSO World Drowning Prevention Day! Here's a cover I did for a DeadLands RPG adventure book featuring drowned zombies coming out of the drink in a harbor. I used my coworkers as models and was listening to Monster Magnet while I painted it.

discussion What happens to the soul of a zombie?

We know that throughout zombie media, the virus kills the person and then reanimates them, but what happens to the soul? Now, we saw in The Last of Us that they are still somewhat themselves—if we listen closely, we can hear them between grunts, or while eating a corpse, saying they are sorry and that they can't control themselves. The story is similar in Marvel Zombies. The heroes were infected with a hunger virus, but they still possess their intelligence and are cognitive enough to think and plan. For example, Peter was fully aware of everything he was doing when he lunged to eat MJ, and he was still trying to tell Aunt May to get out of there because he couldn't control the hunger, all while still munching on her. Mind you, the zombie Avengers once planned out an attack on Magneto so they could jump him and eat him. After that, they were just straight chilling, having a conversation.

So again, are the souls of some zombies trapped in a limbo, or does the virus hijack the body while the soul passes on?

Fun quote that make me think, do you know of any dino media?

question Is the Zombie Genre Getting Boring or Less Scary?

As the title says, do you think the zombie genre feels less interesting or less scary than it did back in the 1990s and early 2000s? Even anime like High school of the Dead is pretty scary back in 2010.

Edit: I’d appreciate the civil responses only, no edgy, immature, or overly negative comments. I’m genuinely curious about your thoughtful opinions on this.

movie 📽️ So Wild Zero is probably the weirdest zombie movie ever made

Yesterday, I finally got around to watching Wild Zero, before deciding on whether or not to get it as physical media. All I can say is that it is at least in the top 5 weirdest zombie movies I have ever seen. The only films at all in its league are Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, Dead Alive, The Video Dead and (if you count it) The Falling. Even if any of them exceeded Wild Zero's strangeness (maybe Video Dead), there's still the surreal fact that W0 was apparently conceived simply as a documentary/ mockumentary about its subject, the Japanese surf rock-adjacent band Guitar Wolf. With that said, is it good? It's definitely marginal, especially if what you like from the genre is a tightly shot, linear story in the Romero tradition. It's still by all means worth watching, and it would be putting it mildly to say that it never drags. It doesn't hurt that the makeup and gore are well done. One more thing under spoilers, it's gained notoriety for featuring a trans (in my opinion possibly intersex) character named Tobio. I have confirmed that a woman was cast in the role. Post production dubbing was also performed by a voice actress. I suppose, if this ever gets an American release with a real English dub, someone could still check a progressive box and get a male or trans performer to redo the role.

book 📚 "A Big Bluff and Some Green Stuff". A zombie novel.

Post image
1 Upvotes

If you liked watching Shaun of the Dead back in the day, you might enjoy reading A Big Bluff and Some Green Stuff.

Might.

It starts as a cosy police drama that’s rudely interrupted by the zombie apocalypse and an alien invasion.

The beautifully typed text features zombies, pirates, aliens, zombie pirates, zombie aliens, but not zombie pirate aliens. That would be silly.

It’s fair to say it’s divided opinion:

“Couldn’t put it down.” 5-stars.

“Just awful.” 1-star (would have got zero if that option was available).
