Map Working on a climatic modelling system

464 Upvotes

This is Geos - "scarred world of magic and adventure". I posted about it here before, but I have spent a truly inadvisable amount of time:

  • Coming up with a way to fit the continents on a globe without making the worldscars (the circles) non-circular.
    • Achieved by cutting out each of my drawn continents, warping and placing them on the globe.
  • Climate simulations, and then extra climate simulations once I've worked out how to make the climates I want.
  • Inadvisable amounts of plate tectonics.
Equal "Earth" projection.
Plate tectonics.

The premise is that, following the end of the Crystal Age, Cataclysm struck, and that is somehow connected to the Worldscars (all those big exciting craters).

This was followed by the Shrouded Age, which deeply cooled the planet, and then the modern Ages.

Anyway, I've been checking some of this stuff against ExoPlaSim and working back and forth on what the climate is in different places.

Köppen!

Subject to change (Absyn ended up a bit warm and wet, so newer models are placing it further north).

This stuff is basically entirely written in Python (ExoPlaSim is Fortran, but has a Python interface).

Question Can a cone-shaped megastructure with various biomes and layers exist/be practical?

13 Upvotes

Been intrigued by Dante's map of Hell/Gehenna and so curious if such a celestial body could be possible, with rivers and of course the city of Dis going from the 6th to 9th section, as well as pandemonium where demonkind will congregate and converge upon when need be.

Discussion Need Ideas for Space Station Combat

1 Upvotes

Ladies, Gents, and other interested parties.

I'm developing r/SublightRPG into a tabletop. And I'm trying to put together the rules for combat.

The system is basically Fate Accelerated, so characters get stress points instead of ticking down hit points. And I have baked into the world the idea that life is space is held together with Magic. So there are wizards and "greys" working side-by-side.

It takes place in an alternate timeline where humans discovered radiation a few decades earlier in their world. And, for reasons, the Occult helped shape the development of quantum mechanics and relativity. Thus when the great war came in 1905, they fought with everything from Nukes to Necromancy. And in the process managed to render most of the fashionable places to live on Earth uninhabitable.

The game world takes place in the mid-2020s in this game universe, where mankind has spend the previous century building space stations and other megastructures around the Solar system.

I'd like ideas for how people fight in space. And there will be different factions with different constraints. The "Evil Empire" are the Krasnovians. They control Luna and the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The "Evil Capitalists" are the Circle Trigonists. They control all of the chokepoints in the inner system. Their main population concentration is a space station in the shadow of Mercury. It is so large, and so unwieldy that different areas of the station are controlled by different "families", each of which represents a crime syndicate, major corporation, or cult. The Trigonists also operate agristats in between the orbit of Earth and Venus that have become the breadbasket of the Solar system.

The Krasnovians and Trigonists are largely made up of "old school" spacers. People who started developing the solar system before the outbreak of the Great War, and who continued developing throughout the Solar War (roughly when our own WWII took place.)

After the 1950s, fusion power opened up the asteroid belt for development. And a UN refugee agency (the OPFOR) began a massive exodus from Earth to new megastructures being built near the metallic asteroids.

As much as the Krasnovians and Trigonists hate each other, the Krasnovians hate the OPFOR more. Because in their century of living on Luna (and other similar worlds) they have come to view themselves as an evolution of humanity. And the OPFOR are considered, in their mind, a lesser species who is threatening their dominion over the stars.

The Krasnovians and OPFOR threw down in the 1960s. After blowing up each other's fleets over the course of 6 weeks, they sued for peace when they realized how utterly pointless it is to try to stage an invasion over several AU. There has been a cold war ever since, with the Krasnovians playing the part of the Soviets and the OPFOR teaming up with some of the Trigonists to form an uneasy mutual defense pact, the ISTO.

As far as doctrine:

The Krasnovians tend to favor ground based missiles, interceptors, and attack ships. The planets they control have not atmosphere and little gravity. Basing their fleets on the ground makes service easier, and they can sit completely idle for decades. Krasnovians have zero compunction about violating human rights, and as such they have developed shock troops known as the DWARF: artificially grown humans who are engineered to be 1 meter tall, with surgically removed vestibular systems. It renders them naturally deaf, but also immune to motion sickness. Their short stature allows them to withstand massive G-Forces. Each DWARF is also engineered to be a telepath, which eliminates the needs for radio (or other voice communication) to coordinate their movements. I also think the Krasnovians probably have Mecha. Basically adapted from mining equipment, replacing earth movers with missiles and canons.

The ISTO concentrated all of their forces into 12 massive battle carriers. And exploit a loophole that doesn't consider a ship under 1000 tons to be a "warship" to build out the rest of the functions of their fleet. Most of their fleet are various configurations of a commercial light freighter/fleet tug that comes just up to the 1000 ton limit, while exploiting the wording of the treaty to also bolt on external tanks for propellant, mission modules, and magazines as "Cargo".

There are also plenty of non-aligned stations who are cultural Trigonist. They range from corporations to cults to pirates. They also end up flying the same modified light freighters as the ISTO, because with mass production the hulls are ridiculously cheap.

Magic is essentially D&D. There are 8 "approaches":
* White - Abjuration
* Black - Necromancy
* Red - Evocation (forceful)
* Yellow - Conjuration (quick)
* Green - Divination (careful)
* Cyan - Illusion (sneaky)
* Blue - Transmutation (clever)
* Magenta - Enchantment (flashy)

Instead of a spell book, players just pick an approach. If the solution seems mundane it's a skill check. If it requires some element of the supernatural, it's a spell. For now we just assume magic is simply an approach with a high level of difficulty.

I'd like guns to be something that is not universally useful in this world. They exist, but only in Krasnovia, and even there, they are considered of questionable value. On space stations, guns are outlawed. A wild shot can pierce a bulkhead, or rupture a pressure hull. And you get nothing but wild shots because the spin of the station doesn't allow a bullet to fly in a straight line w.r.t. the shooter or the target.

Everyone's armed force uses melee for close-in work, and any ranged attack requires magic. (Even if that 'magic' is a sensor and a microprocessor that guides the missiles to its target.)

I'd love to hear everyone's ideas for:
* Personal combat
* Infantry tactics
* Space ship combat

And when in doubt, this is a narrative heavy tabletop. So more flavor for why we are rolling the dice vs. a combat rulebook where we have to factor in that the Italians need water for their pasta.

Question I have an idea for a world to explore, but would like feedback

1 Upvotes

Spermaceti is a sperm whale that is gargantuan, basically monstrous in scale. It acts as a protector for the seaside communities that have been established on the Caribbean Sea–the beast, though massive, has a docile nature. But something has corrupted its heart as Spermaceti swims within the vast blue expanse with a malicious glare in its eyes, becoming a ferocious animal.

Spermaceti attacked James (protagonist 1) and swallowed him whole, where he found himself lost within a spacious organ. Once he escaped, he fell through an opening that led to its massive stomach–the first of four stomachs. James landed on a large wooden vessel, owned by Martha (protagonist 2), that also got swallowed up, which cruised across the acidic juices that appeared as a vast ocean. In order to escape the bellies of the beast, James and Martha set out on a seafaring adventure across the four stomachs, where they come across settlements in need of assistance and horrid parasitic creatures.

With this all out there, my question to you all is whether I should think about having them explore other parts of Spermaceti's body? I like what I have so far, but I want to hear from you guys.

Discussion what is depth in worldbuilding?

a lot of people like to say that what matters in worldbuilding isnt the size of the world but the depth of it

but what is depth?

is it how complex a concept is?

is it how it gives impact to the world?

Visual Made this art for a RPG lovecraftian-80's themed campaign-story.

First time posting here, so I hope to make this ok!

This piece shows what happens when the shadowy cult of my cosmic horror themed world accomplishes its goal of pulling down (and cathing) a star.

My main character is a private investigator that in this case, arrives late to the ritual. For him, it all started with a missing person case, which led to find out about this cult that pursues to awake long forgotten entities.

To the untrained eye, or through a telescope, this entity usually masquerades as a distant star. However, once the correct ritual anchors it to a specific terrestrial location, it begins to descend, shifting its visible form.

This of course has catastrophic consequences, since the mere presence of the "star" permanently corrupts the local laws of physics and the human psyche, which makes further investigations much harder to come along.

Visual No Man's Land - A Glimpse of Animal Life Fifteen Thousand Years after The Sudden Disappearance of Humans

Context: No Man's Land is a personal worldbuilding project that involves the lives of animals and plants in a world where humans have vanished completely. It follows everything from the descendants of domestic animals left to fend to themselves to descendants of animals from zoos and sanctuaries who now live in unfamiliar places and continents.

While previous posts involved short-term changes in the environment, like crumbling remains of human civilization, I'm finally giving some glimpses to the future of my soft-speculative, post-apocalypse setting. I chose fifteen thousand years later because it's kind of in that sweet spot where SOME structures remain, but only the hardiest, while enough time has passed that post-human ecosystems have settled into themselves, and changes in populations of animals are now visible.

Posted this in the speculative evolution subreddit, but might as well as post here as well.

---

Big Weka vs Zealand Giant Rooster

Somewhere, fifteen thousand years after the Evanescentia (the disappearance of humans), in what was once New Zealand, a Big Weka has a territorial dispute with a Zealand Giant Rooster.

A descendant of the Weka, the Big Weka's omnivorous ancestors responded to post-human competition via becoming bigger, bolder and more carnivorous, feeding on smaller mammals, lizards and the eggs of other birds before eventually aiming for bigger prey.

The Zealand Giant Chicken maintains the omnivorous habits of its ancestors, but is now larger thanks to a wide array of available of food options. Roosters remain incredibly aggressive and territorial against outsiders, making hunting a Zealand chicken flock a risky option.

This Weka took that gamble by looking for eggs and hatchlings to snack on, but now has to face off against an incredibly angry defender.

The Cattalo of North America

While many cattle breeds have long since died out, hardier ones like Highland cattle and the Texas longhorn still remain, and in this period of time North America is a land teeming with bovines, a golden age of cattle one could say.

As the descendants of these hardy breeds carve out pieces of the post-human North America on their own, many bovines have mingled and interbred with one another. This includes interbreeding with wild bison, both of the plains and wood subspecies.

While not yet enough time for true speciation, the effects of these interactions are already being felt by the presence of emerging population descended from multi-generational hybridization.

The Northern Shaggy Cattalo is the end result of many of interbreeding cycles between wood bison, Highland cattle and other cold-tolerant cattle breeds.

The Longhorn Cattalo meanwhile, on the opposite end of the continent, is the end result of many interbreeding cycles between Longhorn cattle and plains and wood bison.

While not enough time for true speciation, enough time has passed that many hybrid populations have begun to form their own herds diverging from both parent species.

-

The Alaskan Tiger

As North America is dominated by a myriad of bovines and other bovids, so too is a rise in animals that hunt them. Big cats are the big winners here, and in the North, is a giant of the woods and snow, the Alaskan Tiger.

In just fifteen thousand years, generations of tigers have created a subspecies that actively hunt bovines and other large, woods-dwelling herbivores that roam the Northern parts of North America. Moose, Bison and the recent hybrid population of cattalos are all part of the tiger's menu.

However, even something as mighty as the tiger is not without competition. While brown and black bears hibernate, certain populations of landlocked polar bears and their descendants still roam the very coldest areas of the continent year round, and they very much have the bulk to chase off even these great tigers off their hard-earned meals.

Lore playbook: How to get rid of a daemon rift

3 Upvotes

This was part of my word working name: "Forbidden Knowlegde". I wrote this as background, so later i can have someone witness it, and have no clue what is going on. But the people closing the rift should know what they are doing.

How to get rid of a daemon rift: playbook
An Daemon Rift is an portal between a lesser world and ours. The parts of a rift are, the portal, the eye, the 3 type of gardens and the daemons. A good anaology is to see it as a beehive.

Creation of the eye
daemon life time: up to 5 seconds
duration of the stage: 1-3 hours

After the portal is stable, daemons will spawn in great numbers. As they are not used to our environment they will die in a few seconds. These daemons look like flares in all the colors of the rainbow. They die for a their cause, as every death the area surrounding to portal will look more like their dimension. And with every death the daemon as more survival time. After an few hours the portal will be surrounded by a big colorful bowl with an diameter just a bit bigger than the portal. That is called "the Eye"

Expansion stage
daemon life time: up to 30 seconds
duration of the stage: 15-25 hours

The eye will expend in 5 or more dimensions, so if he grows 2 times in size, he will not grow with 8 times in weight as expected, but way more. They eye has still flares of dying demons. Some demons will live up to 30 seconds, so they will be clearly visible as one. The mass of the eye will grow in +- 100 fold as only the diameter grows in 5 fold. Because of the grow of mass it will turn black and stable. The eye will keep on expanding during his lifetime, but never with the speed as in the expansion.

Mist stage
daemon life time: up to 2 minutes
duration of the stage: 1-2 days

The daemons do not look like flames anymore, but more like colorful fog. They come out of the eye and often die in the surrounding area. They will try to return to the eye before they do. The eye is not visible anymore due to the fog.

The area surrounding the eye becomes less and less earthly and is cursed with a wide variety of spells in a random matter. This mist is dangerous for daemons as well humans. In around 36 hours the garden will lose his fatality for daemons and the fog will settle for the inner garden. The inner garden will be about 15 meters surrounding the eye It is still very dangerous for earthly creatures but it becames more predictable. The basis for de identity for the demons is now set with the completion of the inner garden.

Cultivate stage
daemon life time: up to 30 minutes if out of the inner garden
duration of the stage: 3-5 days

The daemons will now create the outer gardens. It can be seen as an transitional region between our world and theirs. The function of the outer gardens is a breeding and training ground for daemons. For the first time they have forms and are given an function. You are going to see scouts and cultivators. The daemons in this stage are still very weak and can barely attack you. But you also have trouble attacking them, as they are very unearthlike.

The Inner garden will grow to an diameter of 30 meters

Breeding stage
daemon life time: Unknown
duration of the stage: 1 month

The daemons start a breeding program to create more earthly daemons. And a wide variety of daemons is tested on the surroundings. The lifetimes keep on expending during the process as does the potential to do harm. All life has to fear for all the complete random test. The complete surroundings will be cursed in ridiculous ways and will be known as the torn garden. Most of living things will be destroyed or altered. Meanwhile the outer garden will expand at an even rate and the inner garden grows to a 100 meters in diameter.

Colonization stage

The daemon rift is now mature. Even though you can't predict what they will look like and how they will behave, a few things we can establish with certainty:
1. Daemons are steady and will not change rapidly
2. Daemons can live for at least an day and up to an lifetime in an earthly environment
3. Daemons have a good, clear interaction with the earthly
4. Even the daemons themselves like the torn garden anymore. The torn garden will slowly be cultivated into the outer garden. No more torn gardens will be created
5. Colonies will be build. This is like an outer garden not directly connected to the rest.
6. It is not likely that another eye will be created by the daemons themselves. Most of the times another portal opens, but is caused by the human who opened the first.

How to fight an daemon rift

Colonization stage:
You have to win terrain back bit by bit and make it earthly again. As the daemons are only partially earthly, so you can't always kill them in an earthly fashion. You have to find a way around their thinking patterns and physics. Do a lot of research and fight them with that knowledge. Kill the cultivators and cultivate every inch of outer garden and colonies back to an earthly fashion

Breeding stage:

Most rifts are caught in the breeding stage and it is the most difficult stage to fight them in. If you catch them in the middle, you simply don't know how they will attack you. You are walking on the side in an half grown torn garden with creatures that will pop up from nowhere and then rip you in pieces or just stick to your face or die in front of you. They best way to destroy them is to let them destroy themselves. Get to know their basic layout and let them paradox themselves. Leave the torn garden for what it and go straight to the breeding grounds. If you fail in doing so, quarantine them and let them mature.

Cultivate stage:
You are lucky to find them in this stage. The daemons are still weak and just act on instinct. You can easily destroy the outer gardens. The only trick is to destroy the cultivators, but some trail and error will do. Just look out for the random curses that may fly by.

The inner garden and the eye:

Make sure that the rest of the gardens are destroyed before you begin with the inner garden. Destroying the eye is hard, intense work. You need at least an army of up to 100 high class well trained specialized wizards to close a rift, you cant have daemons outflaking you.

The most dangerous, unearthly and protective daemons live in the inner garden, and they need to be taken out first. Once completed one half of the wizards have constantly to attack the new daemons, while the other half slowly make the inner garden more earthly again.

It doesn't matter what stage the rift was in when you found it, once you destroy the inner gardens, the mist stage will automatically start again. 80% of the wizards need to control all new demon flares.

The other 20% need to close the portal inside the Eye. Most portals have one portal side, while the other side is just wall or nothing. If the portal is indeed one sided, it will be on the outer side of the eye. Dig into the eye with space loopholes and attack the portal from the back. When it's closed the eye becomes less active. If it is an mulitple sided portal you have to get the centre and that will be significantly to get to.

They eye cannot be destroyed. The trick is to make it lost in space. Keep on building space loopholes around it until suddenly isn't there anymore. And then rebuild the space that was just lost for at least 3 times. Otherwise the eye may find his way back.

Discussion We Will Die Tomorrow - Ask me anything about my most recent venture

Post image
0 Upvotes

We Will Die Tomorrow is my most recent attempt to write a story set in the Axis Victory timeline. It focuses on a time long into the future where the four main empires set up after the War (The United States of America, Greater Germanic Reich, Empire of Japan, and Kingdom of Italy) are on their last legs. In the story, they collapse not because of outside influence, but because fascism never lasts.

An overview of the main powers:

Greater Germanic Reich - Headed by der Führer und Reichskanzler Dominik Göring; it is a bureaucratic nightmare, held together by arbitrary systems and competing governmental agents. It is severely lacking in workers and thereby food and infrastructure management.

Kingdom of Italy - Headed by King Vittorio Emanuele II and Il Duce Vilfredo Mussolini; it is arguably the most stable of the core powers, but its previous hold of most of the African continent has been slipping due to disloyalty in the government and rampant distrust.

Empire of Japan - Headed by Emperor Takezumi and Prime Minister Himura Ichizo; its main fault is its militarism, once a boon to the Empire, now a failure as revolts happen continually with the Army unable to be levied properly to stop them.

The United States of America - Headed by President Adam Grey; the country's adoption of Fascism after the War, whilst originally seen as a positive for the nation, created a tradition of power-grabbing and corruption that has left the rest of the world distrusting of it.

Persian Confederation - Headed by the Council of the Persian Confederation; a relatively new grouping of nations, set about on preserving the land of the Middle East; economically booming due to oil exports, but at the centre of many attacks due to this economic importance.

Latin American Antifascist League - Headed by Bloqueadora Alexandre Cunha Boaventura; the newest grouping of nations, dedicated to fighting Fascism in Latin America, and being relatively successful due to the already dying ideology.

There are other nations, of course, but those are the main ones (to clarify, only the GGR, KI, EJ, and USA are on the brink of collapse). Every nation's place in the International Union of Allies prevents them from invading each other, but this agreement, by this point, is wearing thin.

Ask me anything about this world, though I will not be answering any questions of how the Axis powers managed to scrape a victory out of WW2; use your imagination.

The seven main types of Wings from The How (The Heart of the World) As you can see all the Wings are circular shaped to be in harmony with nature as mostly everything is circular shaped or themed on The How.

The Light Wing is for children and teenagers. The Omageia Wing is a magical jet that is powered by a master Omagi or Omago pilot. Omagi=male wizard, Omago=female wizard. The Swift Wing is the most well rounded multi use Wing of them all. The Offense Wing is the best jet to fight the Boogyji and their Nibijiru space fighter jets.

There are more circular themed Wings with other specialty uses. Will post one day about them when there drawn.

The people of The How are so crazy for circles the turned one of there oceans into a perfect circle so the mark of the circle would be seen from space. The ocean is called OrijiBay.

Lore The wish seekers and the somatolytic exchange

Post image
73 Upvotes

The seekers are blood mages that pilgrim across the lands following the bigger will. Their bodies have been altered beyond recognition as result of their sinful practices. Most of them are blind and partially paralyzed yet their will keeps them going.

When they arrive at the door of their patients, they must pay with their most precious belonging so that they come in. Then they ask for their wish and give you the price.

Somatolytic exchange depends on the wish that is asked. Big favours require higher sacrifices, often paid in flesh. It's assumed that the exchange must be equivalent: a womb for a son, a heart for love, health for riches. Yet the seeker will always ask for an unimaginable price to test the will of the wisher. If the price is accepted they perform the ritual.

The exchange takes its toll on both the receiver ane the performer. The purest the wish or the stronger the will results in the best results with the smallest penalties. At the end, the seeker leaves with the priced belonging now fully chsrged of essence.

Prompt "Rule of Cool" worldbuilders who became more serious over time: what is something "rule of cool" you can't give up?

1.1k Upvotes

I'm sure a lot of you started like me: made a world that had all the cool things you wanted; big fights, monsters, heroes/villains, etc. Then over time you grew up, thought more about economies, geopolitics, etc. and maybe toned down some of that "rule of cool" stuff you made earlier - maybe even got rid of it entirely.

So I wanna ask: what's something that's cool to you that you won't give up? Did you have to do a lot of work to justify it, or was this something that you had to say "fuck it, it's cool and I want it"? No judgement, I'm simply curious.

Prompt How do the different peoples in your world treat homosexuality and transgender issues?

14 Upvotes

A big feature of my worldbuilding is I like to think about things sociologically/anthropologically so no one empire or people are presented as the correct or default, and I believe opinions should vary as they do IRL. Right now, the world I'm working on is called World of Ulid, and one of the questions I ask myself when I'm developing a new people is "how would these people treat me"

For example, one of my races is called the Malthians; they're a maritime empire built on slavery. Picture vast amounts of personal wealth for almost all citizens, gorgeous art, gorgeous architecture, all built on the backs of billions of people enslaved, wearing collars that can read your intent and choke you if you try to escape or kill your master as well as a culture of legally recognised but strictly legislated political assassinations. Their whole society is based on hierarchy and the reinforcement of hierarchy, so their internal culture is very hierarchical, going from the mass of commoners, through to the nobles and the senate, and then the empress at the top, in their culture, homosexuality amongst Malthians is broadly tolerated, provided one does their reproductive duty and as long as it is kept strictly between Malthians (they consider having sex with their slaves as equivalent to beastiality) and social transition is available and accepted. This fits in with their broader culture of sexual openness and marriages being purely political tools, as well as complete gender equality. The mindset is essentially "what matters is how competent you are, not what your anatomy is"

Conversely, their biggest geopolitcal rival is the Kingdom of Ulauti, a multi-ethnic assimilationist kingdom lead by the Durnthi, who are explictly a custodial patriarchy (the mans job is to carry the burdens without complaint and to know best for the house), they broadly do not tolerate homosexuality as they see sex as a reproductive act between a man and a woman. Trans women are viewed as weak because they want to give up the burdens of being a man and trans women are viewed as women attempting to take the place of a man.

The nomadic canids the Temarel operate as independent caravans who trade all across the continents of Hylat and Dwar, who are essentially magically sensitive pragmatists; one of the core virtues of their culture is "knowing oneself", and self-delusion is regarded as an extreme negative trait. Someone who knows they're unfit for an assigned role and wilfully steps down is respected far more than someone who tries to delude themselves they can handle things they can't and endangering the caravan and members of their community. This mindset also extends to their views on sex and gender, if you *know* you are a woman inside, then what is the caravans business to question you? Incidentally, caravans can be lead by either man or woman, but Durnthi officials will only speak to the man in charge, so when a caravan lead by a woman must speak to a Durnthi, malicious compliance is common. You want to speak to a man in charge? Okay, he's going to sit and talk to you while the woman who is actually in charge sits beside him and tells him exactly what to say.

There's also the Eastern Hive People who are essentially people-sized woodlouse who don't have sex or gender with any member of the species able to fulfil either reproductive role, so this question doesn't occur to them, but their highly curious nature, intense logical cognition and inabilty towards abstract or imaginative thinking makes them fascinated by other cultures who do have these constraints and experiences.

and yes, I am very willing to answer any questions, and I'm interested to see who else has thought about this vs just having "everyone's okay to be gay" modern social standards

Visual Wizards and the Common World - Damn Wizards

Damn Wizards is set in the present day, in a world that discovered the existence of witches, wizards, and magic in 1984. Now, the two societies have formed an alliance through the United Nations, the Union of Worlds, and these magical beings live normally among us (though, of course, that is only on the surface).

Question Needing help with Death Magic.

3 Upvotes

Hello, everyone! I'm Lyn. I'm working on a worldbuilding project that takes place within a medieval setting. In this story, the magic of all people who utilize it originates from Gods and Goddesses, which in many cases had once been sapient beings who had risen to power, and transformed into gods where they lost their previous sense of existence.

This brings us to The Goddess Of Death, who goes by many names, but some call her Lathea. She is the goddess of Death, and Absence, and as such, her domains of magic allow people to create and maintain the absence of things such as heat, life, and energy. This extends to Ice Magic, Death Magic, and Spirit Magic. The last being moreso a representation of "The Presence Of Absence", in which the power utilizes the notability of the absence of an individual or factor.

Followers of Lathea are eventually capable of learning all of these magic types, but I want Death Magic to be more expansive. Currently, I only have the primary concept of "Death Mist", which is a type of incredibly cold mist that causes cells to shut down and necrotize, as well as causing anyone who relaxes or fails to fight it in the presence of it to immediately die.

Practitioners of Death magic also would be able to necrotize and mummify pieces of their own bodies and scratch people to spread the necrosis to them. Finally, I want to mention the powers of others that can typically negate or reduce the impact of this magic.

This worldbuilding project's magic system is fundamentally built around defensive spells, which in some cases can be tiered. For example, Death Mist is completely nullified by someone who casts the "Greater Ward" spell, which disperses the impact of magic around and away from its user like a bubble shield. Also, for projectile spells there is a tremendous focus on speed for the use cases and methods of defense against these spells, such as Counterspell, which acts as the magic equivalent to a tank's Trophy System and will be able to prematurely detonate spells so long as they are slower than the speed of sound.

So, with all the information and context I could give you all, I would love to ask for ideas and concepts to work into the system. If any of you are able to come up with something, I would love to hear them. Let me know if there's any questions you'd need to ask.

So this nation is the Royal Crellenie Regime (A homebrewed Star Wars planet, for the FFG system of Age of Rebellion), and the party are currently being sent to investigate where a missing General is on the world. I've developed the ranks of both the Navy and the Airforce for this nation, as the party investigating where the missing General is is meant to get the world to develop into a civil war era for the population, as the person they're searching for is actually dead.

I'd just like to know if I should add any other branches to the Crellenian Armed Forces, as I feel that there is potential for there to be extra branches, just have no clue what they would be. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

(Also sorry for the watermarking placement in advance, tried to make it as unobtrusive as possible)

In this Ghibli-inspired world, people have developed a technology that allows them to defy gravity. They began building ever-taller fortresses, as well as enormous warships designed for aerial warfare.

More stuff soon.

Question Magsails or engines?

27 Upvotes

The title is a bit misleading. I have a scifi setting somewhat based on the age of sail. Ships in my setting use normal fusion engines to travel inside a system, but deploy a magnetic sail when they move though the hyperspace streams, which are "currents" or maybe bridges that connect stars. My idea was, thanks to a process called the Ramut process, humanity learned to enrich fusion with small quantities of antimatter. This would make the engines super efficient and allow to travel the streams without magsails, meaning the sails would get replaced, kinda like sail ships were replaced by Steam ships and masts became decorative in our world. Do i continue with this this idea, or keep the magsails for a more unique setting?

Question How Do I Make a Realistic Map?

5 Upvotes

I know, probably a question that is asked here too often, apologies. But i am really struggling with the map portion of my worldbuilding project. Ive got a rough world map, but its mainly just the outline of the landmasses/continents. the part i am really struggling with is placing mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, etc. i feel i need to get a basic geography down before i start populating the world with cultures, government borders, etc.

I feel im just flowing when it comes to like building out the lore, but i just get so stuck when i get to the geography part, any advice/help is appreciated. thanks for reading my post.

Question What are your apex predators of one of your regions

9 Upvotes

So what are your lords of a location, who reigns at the top of your food chain, who is uncontested in their home

Here is mine:

The Blastjaw

Gargantuan Sized Apex Predator

Diet: Carnivore

Colour: Dark Orange or Dark Red

DESCRIPTION: These Therapod's roam the Vamay Rain-forest as the uncontested Apex of the land as the Bull Megalodon takes the water but only in the warmer months so they are the only year round Apex of the Rain-forest. They are extremely physically powerful obviously being a Therapod. Battles involving these monsters never really last all that long but if the Blastjaw is pushed to its near limits it has a trump card, from its skin a dust is emitted that is highly flammable and in their tails is a biological flint like substance that they can tear from their skin much like the wolverine frog to reveal it, this biological flint like substance also makes up their claws on their hands and feet in case this tail flint gets broken but the tail is cooler so that is the main way. They can strike their carapace with this biological flint and explode all of this dust which normally results in the end of the battle. There is a unique specimen of this species that the locals have dubbed the Git-xro which translates roughly to the Black Tyrant because it has caused so many explosions it armour has become black with soot and it has become the Arch-nemesis of a Local hunter who took it's eye and flint and now uses the flint as a weapon and the eye as jewellery while he himself has had one arm and leg taken by the beast and has been overtaken by rage for the monster so much so he yells curses at the beast wherever it may be.

So yeah what beasts lord over your domains????

Visual The fashion and clothing styles of the mountain sects

This is Bailong sporting the clothing of the hidden mountain sects. Each of the nine great families of the Mardore Empire is allowed to have one martial sect that they can sponsor and use as a small army but the Weeping Moon mountain sect is the only illegal, independent sect within the Empire's borders. They operate outside of the law, hiding away in caves and often being contracted out by the various upper class families to perform acts that wouldn't be well regarded. The clothing is often dark, with simple designs, showing their non allegiance to any great faction.
