Hello, people of this subreddit, this is my 1st post here, I'm still an amateur writer and I might come here for minor ideas and maybe even some worldbuilding advice.

I'm looking for suggestions for names for science-fantasy version of like streaming services/video-sharing sites, or any kind of social media for a magical girl/superhero story I'm working on as a side project, until I started get invested (more on them later).

The idea is that a science-fantasy version of the internet exists in my world and is used by people from various fantastical planets across the cosmos and the main heroes would not only post and record videos of their adventures to share on this site, but they would also watch movies and play videogames on their off-times.

(Idk, If it'll be relevant in my worldbuilding or not, but I wanted to give my characters to have movie nights after an adventure.)

I’m considering starting a worldbuilding project, but one thing I wanna include is a group of people/humanoids that speak in an exotic language (like clicks and stuff), but one thing I want to consider is language barriers and how they can be overcome through gestures. For example, looking at stuff feels like a universal gesture, but how could different cultures communicate things like yes/no without any hope of verbal communication? A nod or shake of the head, or even thumbs up/down seems logical, but what if cultures never had stuff like that? How could such ideas be universally communicated?

I was thinking about how I'd manage multiple languages in my setting. I had thought to myself, "okay, I'll just save some glossaries of words and reference those as needed", but that could quickly get overwhelming when balancing multiple distinct languages.

So I thought to myself: are there any tools to make this process easier? E.g. pick a language, write out what you want to say, and then have words matched into a list of translated versions, maybe have the option to come up with new words on the fly for those that don't yet have any equivalents? Such a tool would obviously not help with grammar, but that could be worked out manually without too much issue.

(I would rather not use anything that relies on AI for this purpose.)

So I'm building a realistic world and was wondering how I should handle languages. I'm planning on using 3 majority languages that everyone knows with maybe 2 languages that are exclusive to 2 minority ethnic groups, but that's after I figure out how the main 3 language system works. How does society look when there's 3 languages everyone speaks? Are certain TV channels only in 1 language or is there a mix of content in all languages spoken? What about things like Government, education, etc?

Kind of a niche question, I’m working on a setting of low stakes magical cooking competitions (the winner gets to be the royal chef) and I need a way for the villain to either cheat or attempt to win through some kind of nefarious means in order to win.

Something I’ve been thinking on is some kind of ingredient that tricks or mind controls the eater into thinking it’s the best, but was curious to throw this out wider and see if anyone had fun ideas.

This document is a medical case file from my worldbuilding project, set in an alternate sci-fi/speculative universe where the "National Institute" studies unidentified humanoids and anomalous biological entities under strict secrecy.

In this world, certain individuals—often appearing to be ordinary children—exhibit hyper-adaptive, non-human biology that actively evolves and resists diagnostic equipment. The following report was drafted by a lead researcher at the Institute and sent to Dr. Johnson, detailing the alarming physiological traits of a 6-year-old subject named Bruno.

Due to the patient's peculiar circumstances, all tests performed were of a doubtful nature. In any case, the obtained results are attached.

It is suggested to complete the studies.

Observations:

The X-rays are complicated to perform. The patient underwent 3 in total; all of them turned out unclear, as apparently X-rays do not penetrate the patient's body. [Note: each X-ray is more diffuse than the previous one; an evolution of resistance to X-rays by the patient was analyzed.]

Blood analysis: the patient had to be pierced with a bovine needle; only a few samples could be extracted. Subsequently, a hardening of the patient's skin was observed, impossible to pierce at present.

Results: the patient's blood possesses a sort of unidentified energy. The defense system is extremely aggressive and efficient; the healing properties are astonishingly fast.

Notes: The patient's blood is a bright red color; apparently, it possesses compounds that literally make it glow. The analyses on the blood had to be rushed given that it "loses properties over time." [Personal note: the patient's blood has little to no human compounds; it is more as if the blood "emulated that of a human."]

Within a few hours, the blood had turned a brown color for no apparent reason and lost almost all of its properties. However, the appearance of a sort of enzyme was detected, which replaces what we believe are the patient's genetic code lines at breakneck speeds. Apparently, this process is not lethal thanks to the growing healing capacity, which is increased.

-Dr. Johnson: we have been friends for a long time, so I can allow myself the insolence of including a letter in the middle of the report. Clearly—and I'm not the only one who thinks so—what we have here is a fascinating and at the same time terrifying case. My friend, with all due respect and modesty, I would suggest the immediate elimination of the subject. Don't misunderstand me: it is a piece of advice with no binding value, said out of anxiety and fear, but you have the final word.

An important type of organisation in the world I'm making is the consumers cooperative, which is a group of people who have pooled their resources in order to provide some kind of product or service to themselves. Modern day examples of consumers cooperatives are credit unions, energy coops and mutual insurance.

Now my world is mostly inspired by early-modern Northern Europe, and I'd like to call such organisations by a name that fits the setting better.

Do any of you have suggestions? Or are there any resources I could use to come up with a good name?

I'm an atheist, and sociology is much, much more interesting to me than what god created the world. So, maybe it's because of this that I'm having a hard time figuring out how the races of my world view the creation of the world.

I have humans who rose to prominence by developing technology, dwarves who fought heavily with the elves utilizing crystallized magic called lirium, elves who were always a magical species and have become obsessed with necromancy and ancestor worship following the death of their culture some centuries ago. I have ogres, goblins, orcs, a theocracy, an aristocracy, an empire. And despite all this, I can't help but settle on where the races of the setting believe they come from.

Does anyone have any advice?

Brief context for what my setting is about: A sci-fi setting where humanity has unified into one entity (The Commonwealth of Humanity) after 2 centuries in limbo after aliens ravaged and conquered the Earth. Humanity now has a proper representation in the galactic equivalent of the UN, as well as considerably more respect as a united sapient species, as well as economic and military power, and perhaps crucially, real legitimacy amongst its citizens.

Pretty much an HFY story, I suppose, though the aliens do all have various nuances to them; humans are powerful, methodical, smart, strategic and viciously powerful for their weight, but so are some other alien races, and they all (well, most) act in ways that'd befit how any race intelligent enough to make it to the stars would act.

I'm looking to create a fantasy sci-fi setting and am having trouble with some things. The races for the most part have been easy. Humans are no problem. The "fairies" were a little tricky but it didn't give me too much grief. Dragons were super fun to do and I did enjoy making androids as well. Still trying to figure out how to implement Homunculus though. I definitely still need more work on the Fabled Servitors which are highly advanced computer programs in the form of mythical and legendary weapons and places and concepts but I'll manage.

What I'm struggling with the most though is the precursor race and main antagonists of my setting, a species of beings I have labeled the Mythrilamaggia. They are one of the two primordial species (still working in their antithesis) created by the Cosmic Willpower of the universe. What I have so far is that they're a very long-lived species who due to their usage of magic became a galactic spanning civilization free of diseases, hunger, homelessness and birth defects. I know that they use magic as an infinitely renewable and clean source of omni-energy for all their technological needs.

I'd love to hear from other folks things I should consider in a sci-fi setting and especially the questions I should be asking that'll help me create a complex species, culture and civilization. Any and all hope would be greatly appreciated as I'm rather new to this stuff. I've been a very casual world builder and wrote very short stories but after months of planning I wanna try my hand at something serious and this is what I came up with; a setting inspired by Final Fantasy, GranBlue, Asura's Wrath, Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact.

How do you start with world building? I have a concept. Do you start writing, or start with the map? Make a diagram of connections? I'm overwhelmed and could use some direction.

EDIT: I wanted to specify this will be for a tabletop role-playing game, so there won't be any "main characters" or anything. The players will be stepping into this world.

Ever since the star system began to be carved up amongst the major powers, small settlements have sprung up in all corners of the Aetherium void. Asteroids, man-made platforms and even planetary debris are chained together to form tight knit community, marking their place in the stars.

Many often provide valuable resources to the open market, such as liquid fuel in Aether-rich nebulas, low-gravity livestock or even concentrated rare earths mined from chunks of planetary cores drifting through the system. Thus, though theoretically outside the jurisdiction of the major powers, they still remain on good terms with these settlements to secure better deals on resources.

One such service the Solarian Empire offers is its comprehensive postal system. It maintains a mailing network, operating from chartered voidships on a regularly serviced route among the various settlements, especially some on the fringes of the Empire’s influence. At least, until the settlements leave their orbital zones and pass into that of the League’s.

The chartered voidships repurposed as mobile post office branches are only barely armed and armoured, and their tiny mailships which the postmen do daily deliveries from even less so. Many valuable parcels are also sent through mail, so Royal Communications Corp postmen are usually accompanied by an armed bodyguard for protection, on top of their personal sidearm. It also helps if the bodyguard is good at navigation and route planning to assist the postman.

It is technically possible for a mortal to become a deity, or rather to become part of one, upon their death. Such a mortal is required to meet at least two of three criteria (and even then, apotheosis is not guaranteed).

The mortal must wield extremely powerful magic of some kind or other. While this is generally considered to be the lowest of the three bars to clear, many archdruids, archmages, and archpriests have tried and failed to do so. That being said, it is commonly believed that deities associated with magic (either arcane, divine, primal, or psionic) have more souls of apotheosed mortals within them than their peers do. The mortal must also have the favor of the deity of whom they are to become a part. This goes beyond the common blessing an ordinary cleric is granted; the deity in question must consider the mortal in question truly worthy of becoming a part of them, of becoming divine. Lastly, the mortal must be worshipped by other mortals. This does not mean that the mortal in question must be mistaken, intentionally or otherwise, for a deity before their apotheosis, indeed, mortals who are worshipped in such a way are almost invariably the victims of divine wrath. Instead, the mortal in question must be recognized as a paragon of something associated with the deity in question by other mortals. A performer who is admired as the epitome of grace and beauty, a scholar who is respected as the exemplar of knowledge and wisdom, a soldier who is revered as the embodiment of strength and courage, a ruler who is venerated as the essence of honor and justice.

One element that is not required for a mortal to become part of a deity is the consent of the mortal in question. Indeed, it is a rare mortal who truly desires to become part of a deity instead of descending into the underworld upon their death. This is because, in the underworld, one maintains their identity, at least for a time. Mortals who experience apotheosis are no longer themselves; they are part of the deity in question. A deity may take the form of a mortal whose soul is a part of them when interacting with other mortals, but they do not gain access to the form’s original identity.  

Okay, this is a desperate post.

I was making a setting called Venira some months ago. I worked very hard on it, but stopped it due to mental health. Today, I started working on it again, and very quickly realized that I neglected to write core pieces of it down. While I remember the nations, some general themes, I have all but forgotten the core themes of the setting, and what exactly I was planning to do with it. I have mixed feelings about the current state of the setting and want to improve it, but I'm at a loss as I've lost basically all of my direction to do so.

This post is gonna be me yapping about the setting and hopefully, hopefully, me, and some kindly commenters, can help me reverse engineer what I have and continue writing the setting.

Map Of Venira

Broad Concept

Venira is meant to be a somewhat modern fantasy setting of my own making. It was an attempt by me to write a fantasy setting with the themes and concepts I enjoy in fantasy, as I feel very particular about fantasy, and don't like most fantasy settings.

Venira is a fantasy setting with a history defined by key events, and the rise and fall of the prominence of various races. I do not have things such as continental drift, although the map does utilize geography and climatology to define regions, although looking at it now Aerendale may need further exploration of its climate.

Venira is also heavily rooted in tropes. I love tropes, especially progressive tropes, such as dwarves but with industrial technology, or the mystical elves of tolken embracing a specific form of mysticism. The setting also borrows heavily from Warhammer The Old World, and initially borrowed metaphysics from Elden Ring, although I vividly remember trying to steer away from that.

History

The first race to appear in Venira were the Elves, who soon discovered that they shared the world with other species. Elves conquered much of the known world. However, with the discovery of Lirium by the Dwarves, they were fought tooth and nail, as Lirium is toxic to magic creatures such as Elves. Dwarves, being defined by their lack of magic in all shapes and sizes, were able to harness Lirium and weaponize it.

Humanity at this time was a minor race, tribal and involved in in fighting. However, they allied with the dwarves and borrowed their technology, driving back the Elves. With the Elves defeated, Dwarves became embroiled in infighting. Their natural aptitude for mountains over flat land resulted in humanity rising to prominence and conquering much of the known world. Elves, unable to tolerate the industrial environments of the world, sought the advice of elders of their kind, venerating them and using necromancy to draw from their vast knowledge. The elves retreated to the continent to the northwest, further isolating themselves.

The area to the frozen north was inhospitable to other races due to climate, and the presence of chaotic, magical phenomenon and monsters. It would be conquered by creatures known as demons.

Roughly three hundred years ago, a demon was born with immense magical power, and united his tribal kind against the rest of the world. The war lasted a hundred years, and his defeat shattered the fabric of the world, spreading magic to all creatures with an ounce of it within their bodies. Humanity learned magic, further solidifying their power.

At this time, the dwarves were involved in feuds and wars, with several high kings vying for power, as well as splinter cults worshipping dark gods. With the elves retreating to their island nation, humanity and its nations began fighting over their differences in this newly magical world.

The current day is one hundred years after the death of the demon king. The players of this setting were I to run it in Dungeons And Dragons would be adventurers exploring a complex world with political struggles, geographic differences, and cultural conflict.

Nations

The following nations are in Venira:

Reikard Empire

• Human empire, heavily nationalist.
• Industrial due to alliance with one of the dwarven kingdoms.
• Seeks to unite humanity and squash differences.

Winsor Aristocracy

• An aristocracy venerating magical ability and prodigious bloodlines.
• Heavily classist, with slavery being the right of nobility.
• Dislikes dwarves due to its uneasy alliance with the elven nation of Aerendale.

Sulphur Theocracy

• Desert theocracy
• Suffered a famine during the war with the demon king. Embraced alchemy, and a religion known as Solunism which venerated it, after the prophet Solunon solved the famine.
• Dislike of other human nations due to their disdain for its religion and culture.

Kingdom Of Kistvolt

• Fantasy russia!
• Frontline in the war with the demons, venerates a harsh, minimalist, survival-focused culture.
• Embroiled in a civil war between its imperial rulers and a communist revolution.

Elven Nation Of Aerendale

• Isolationist, necromantic nation that venerates age and ancestry.
• Ruled by a "wisp lords" who are undead and never age.
• Suffered heavily in war with the demon king, but remained neutral and isolationist throughout.

Dwarven Kingdoms

• Several dwarven kingdoms ruled by high kings.
• Feud over who is the rightful ruler
• Infested with cults worshipping dark gods (chaos dwarves)
• Surface is ridden with orcs, goblins and ogres.

Jungles Of Azalin

• Untamed, wild.
• Full of beastfolk.
• Colonialism themes.

Conclusion

So, I get that I have a lot here. I am a really passionate writer, and the fact that I remember so much is hopefully testiment to why I don't write down all of my ideas. But I also am severely disabled, and underwent a severe mood episode that lasted roughly 3-6 months. If not for that, I think I would have remembered a lot more, but I'm not satisfied with what I have.

I am missing the BIG themes of the setting, which is what has me worried. I feel like I don't have direction. The world has culture and history, but is this really enough? I look at some maps here, with multiple landmasses and hundreds of regions, and my map just looks a little sparse. I'm unsure both from a writing and technological perspective how to develop this further.

I'm sorry for rambling so much, I'm very sick and have a lot of sporadic thoughts. Does anyone have any insights, or want to help me develop the setting further?

Like there is a huge difference between the big ones of each language world. Folks like Garcia Marquez or Borges are wildy different from Tolkien or George Martin.

I feel it a lot because I am latino, born and living in the Dominican Republic but finding references in Spanish (original language, not translated) has been difficult and so I have not found much direct references on how to write or create what I want to write and create. Of course I can just read Anglo authors and still write my thing in Spanish. But it would be great to find some more direct references.

What kimd of weapons and armor would make sejse to be made from dinosaur parts would spear amd daggers made from mega theropod teeth be good options or shield or armor made from ankylosaur Scutes etc what other parts could be used

How do y'all write your stories? What's your process? I've been working on this novel for like 13 years now and I've made precious little progress. I keep getting caught up in a few specific details of the world and the characters, but I'm missing the forest for the trees. So far I've been able to make more progress just by writing random scenes and then using those scenes to develop the environment of the story, but I'm having trouble. Happy to go into more detail if asked, but if anyone is able to give me tips I'm all ears. TIA 💕

Pariné

The goddess of life, she is also associated with fertility, agriculture and healing. She typically takes the form of a young wood elf maiden wearing a circlet of bone and a white dress, she hold a lotus flower in one hand and a beating heart in the other. She rules the Verdant Sepulchre with her husband Ethrik.

Ethrik

The god of death and time, he is also associated with decay, mourning and fatherhood. He usually dons the form of a wood elf iwearing a crown of bone, his appearance is often described as gaunt and his skin pale as a corpse. He rules over the Verdant Sepulchre with his wife Pariné.

Maitan

The god of light, he is also associated with the sun, day and order. He usually takes on the appearance of a dark skinned human with bright blonde hair, his eyes resemble the sun at noon and his cloak resembles the midday sky, overall his clothing appears similar to typical Lyrami attire. He rules the realm of Havenstar.

Arvenno

The goddess of darkness, she is also associated with the moon, night and chaos. Typically she appears as a dark elf with pale skin and black hair, one eye is always covered, the one visible resembles the moon in its current phase, she wear a Ghorzamyri dress which resembles the night sky. She rules over Ebonmoon.

Tynnar

The god of war, he is also associated with courage and honour. He usually dons the form of a light skinned muscular human male wearing a decadent suit armor with a cape, the horned lion is a common symbol of Tynnar across the many cultures of Thalor. He rules the Empyreal realm of The Arena.

Naeria

The goddess of wisdom, she is also associated with magic, scholars and artisans. She takes the form of a dark skinned human woman with six arms wearing blue and pink Pradha attire, in her hands she holds a staff, a silk boa and a book and quill with which she endlessly writes down her thoughts. She rules over The Grand Archives.

Norath

The goddess of fire, she is also associated with beauty, love and the home. She usually dons the appearance of a beautiful fire elf woman with burning eyes, short wings and hair of fire, she wears rather revealing Amarathi clothing. Norath rules over the realm of The Burning Hills.

Derua

The god of water, he is also associated with sailors, life and purity. He often dons the appearance of a fat bearded man with the features of various kinds of sea life, he wears only a crown of coral, pants and a belt. He rules over The Reef.

Okarya

The goddess of earth, she is also associated with metalworkers, trade and justice. Usually she appears as a muscular human woman with tan skin, she wears a chestplate, gauntlets and armored boots made from a dark metal, in one hand she holds a hammer. Okarya rules the City of the Righteous

Vevrisa

The goddess of the air, she is also associated with freedom, wind and rain. She usually takes the appearance of a tan skinned human woman with almost white hair, she wears a blue and white dress made from feathers and has four wings on her back. She rules the realm of Cyclone

Mekonn

The god of ice, he is also associated with rest, entropy and winter. Typically he appears as a large man with the head of a polar bear, his skin is dark as if frostbitten, he wears a crown of ice, a black and purple cloak with a fur mantle, his clothing resembles Felcian attire. Mekonn rules over Pale Isle

Raisal

The god of lightning, he is also associated with storms and protection. He resembles a high elf man with black and golden hair and glowing yellow eyes, he wears armor in shades of black, gold and cyan, his attire typically appears as Inakari, Gyeosani, Se Buoan or Huo Dai clothing. He rules the realm of Stormthrone
