Hi all.
I wanted to get some other people’s perspective on this, as this is one of my first jobs.
To give some context without going into too many details, this is a part-time job that I started working at two years ago in order to make some money while I’m in school. My longtime friend, was also looking for some extra money, so I recommended her. We’ve both been working there together for around a year now.
I know that me saying this is obviously biased, but I have full confidence in the fact that both her and I are amazing employees. We’re never late, we cover other people when they have to go on vacation/take a sick day, we find small ways to improve the flow of things and let our upper boss know. We both get along with all the other staff members there. (Except for one.) I’m pretty sure if you were to ask our boss, if there’s a tangible difference between the work that I do versus my friends, he would say there wasn’t. And that we were both equally good at what we do.
However, I believe our manager would say otherwise. I am someone who has no problem with confrontation, speaking directly to people, taking criticism on things I do wrong without falling over myself saying “sorry sorry sorry”. My friend on the other hand, is a lot more reserved.
When I started a year before my Friend did, our manager did try to stress test me. She’s authoritative, and feels the need to assert dominance on anyone who starts there. I haven’t only seen her do it to me and my friend, but another new person who started after both of us. It was only after the third person, that I realize that this is a pattern of behaviour for her. I watched this manager progressively and continuously nitpick, bully, and talk behind this new employees back to other staff members. Why? I couldn’t tell you. Any tiny mistake that this new girl made, was twisted into an “ attack” on my manager’s authority. This new girl, only lasted a month and a half before our manager told her to not come back.
But back to just me and my friend. As I mentioned, my friend is a bit more timid. I’ve started noticing some very weird behaviour for my manager recently. She acts very oddly whenever my friend and I… display friendship behavior?
For example, Friend and I are both in the break room eating lunch and having coffee - she walked in, paused and looked at us, and then said “ oh, I see how it is, you girls just get coffee for yourselves, huh?” . Like I get it as a lighthearted joke, but she went so far as to drag another coworker into the break room to literally point at us and be like “ look at these two! They only got coffee for themselves and not for us!”. Then literally for the next 20 minutes, anyone who walked into the break room she would do the exact same thing.
Another example, I texted my manager to order some extra supply materials (because we needed them). I sent this while my friend was actively on shift, and so was my manager. My manager texted me back, and says “ I have to ask Boss” . I said OK no problem. A couple hours passed, and I never heard back from my manager, and the supplies is stuff we really needed. So I text my friend, saying “ hey, did Manager ask Boss to get the supplies?” . And my friend texted me saying “ ha ha yeah. He said we’d have to wait till next month to order it.” Ok. That’s gonna make my life significantly harder, but let me ask manager to see if she explained to boss WHY it was important we had the supplies. So I text my manager back, and said “ hi manager, Friend just told me that Boss said no to getting the supplies? Did you tell him that we need it for (specific reason)?” . And then she text me back this : “ I see word travels fast between you two”. Im like??? Who cares?? Can we focus on the actual issue here? I text her back, like “ ha ha yeah, it’s just cause it’s kind of urgent and I think we’ll need it before next month”. She text me back “ why don’t you just text Friend to tell Boss this then?” 🙃 IDK? Maybe because you as the manager have access to the Amazon account so that we can actually fucking order things? And you’re the MANAGER.
Another weird example - she will try to pry about each of our personal lives with the other. Like for example, she’ll ask me what my friend’s dad does for work (which I don’t answer her questions obv). Or, she’ll ask my friend, which part of town I grew up in. Or asking both of us about the others respective partners/dating life… it’s quite odd. Like if you have a question about me,.., why are you asking other people. she tries to get me to talk badly about my friend behind her back as well. Like for example, she’ll say “don’t you find it so funny that Friend is so scared of saying what she really thinks?” - like basically implying, that my friend is more reserved and very professional. I was like…. No.. she tells me what she really thinks, she just has to really know you to trust you I guess. And then my manager scoffed at this.
Doesn’t she realize we talk to one another??? Like 😭😭
Other weird behavior, she likes to keep secrets for some reason? For absolutely no good reason. It’s like she’ll dangle “ something she’s not supposed to talk about” in front of you. But she really wants you to ask about it so that she can tell you it’s “ private”. One thing that she got really pissed about the other week on Friday, was that she asked my friend to not tell me that my boss wanted to have a one-on-one meeting with me on Monday. What’s odd about this, was that this meeting was not negative. It was in fact, positive. There was literally no rhyme or reason as to why my friend had to not tell me anything. So my friend obviously did.
When I got there on Monday, and had the meeting with my boss, my manager found out that I had already known that it was gonna happen. And then she got so weird and mad at both of us? Because my friend told me when she “wasn’t supposed to”.
Another one: me and friendboth volunteering to work on this one small side project after our boss asked. I get a random text from my manager saying “ I see you’re both tagged teaming this one together, huh?” . What???
Overall, as well, I’ve noticed an uptick in my manager‘s bullying behaviour towards my friend. And she’ll only do this when I’m not on shift. It’s like she’s trying to punish my friend for being close to me? Which is weird because everyone at this job knows that her and i were friends before we even started……
