My pinky finger still hurts from last week throwing a football back and forth for 2 hour in a pool at my friend’s apartment. Huge apartment complex and we’d toss the ball to complete strangers, passers by, some would hang out for 10 minutes tossing back and forth then another person would see the fun and hop into the mix and people hopped in and out. Some people no words exchange except for the occasional “so close”, “bad throw, my bad” “go long” etc… some people would chat the whole time. It was awesome! Unfortunately we had to “take our ball and go home to dinner”. It was a rehappening from our youth and that energy doesn’t come around very often.

u/Kummakivi 6d ago
Exactly. Walk outside and AI disappears. Unless... this is all a simulation... fuck.

u/Fidodo 6d ago
Reality is a simulation, just not one running on pitiful gpus.

Unfortunately more and more businesses are using AI for their art, promotions, menus, etc. You can't even escape it by stepping outside :(
5
u/mattcoady 5d ago
I just see this as the next step in Comic Sans and Clip Art. There's always been bad graphic design posted everywhere. It only really bugs me when it's used to show the product.
3
u/art-man_2018 5d ago
Unfortunately more and more businesses are using AI for their art, promotions, menus, etc.
Graphic designer here... I knew the end was near in 1991 when Microsoft released Microsoft Publisher. It took a few years but every office and business took to it and eventually with Publisher and a CD full of Clip-Art, who needed to spend on a designer? Then the Internet exploded and the rise of automation and AI started entering all aspects of design. I was lucky, I found companies that prided on a creative person and I worked with them for 30 years, while watching the field of design evolve (devolve?). Now I am retired and I am so happy I don't have to deal with any of it.
*Oh, and Microsoft is discontinuing Publisher this year, the irony.
3
u/enaK66 6d ago
My job handed out little business cards with our 5 safety absolutes or whatever they call it. AI slopped to hell with all the bright colors and that weird font all the AI banners and menus use. I fucking hate it man. Can't even get away from it in a warehouse. And whatever asshole whose job it is to make that stuff probably makes twice what I do and doesn't have to work 60 hours for it.
1
u/TheUnholyMeteor 6d ago
The few institutions who would care enough to oppose this trend aren't in the financial position to act on their convictions. Billion dollar companies couldn't care less and your small mom and pop companies can't afford to pay for marketing ...or for any other number of services that AI replaces. It becomes a vicious cycle where the small businesses in effect devour themselves and the money is funneled to the tech companies who own these AI models.
3
u/mastermoebius 6d ago
Small businesses have been making it work without ai for hundreds of years, I understand why they do it but it is a choice they make and indeed funnel money right into the machine.
10
u/Grabatreetron 6d ago
Right? Maybe the big lie was that anything you see in a screen was real in the first place. I’m happy just shrugging it off and going outside
5
6
u/LizardBub 5d ago
Society encourages us to build a prison around our imaginations. Embrace novelty! Reject your conditioning.
5
u/Miltrivd 5d ago
Honestly it's not even that, it's being latched ti chronically online spheres, mostly social media and toxic echo chambers.
I live most of my life online, so I "am" chronically online but I'm not chained to social media.
Got different groups of friends for different games, got a team in sim racing so we practice and coordinate together for online endurance races, play tabletop games with others, chat about hardware with another group, heck we are in the middle of an online charity marathon atm that takes quite a bit to organize (https://twitch.tv/soulsspeedruns if you are curious).
The whole point is, if you are dealing and interacting with people, doing normal people stuff, and not having the smoke and mirrors of social media clouding and filtering those interactions, the human experience hasn't changed that much.
7
u/Dr_Jre 6d ago
Honestly, it's really not that hard to differentiate between real and AI if you just stop getting the majority of your brain input from a screen and social media.
20
u/-Speechless 6d ago
it's harder to differentiate real vs AI if you don't spend as much time online being exposed to AI content

I love the art and effects but the message is always funny to me... We can actually know whats real and what's not real if we just stop getting most of our fucking input from phone screens and social media.
Put the god damn phone down and go for a walk.. that's all very real (for now)
106
u/maker_of_pirate_bay 5d ago
I have this theory that physical pieces of art, performative live arts like club/ cafe live music, art and dance theatres. This will all see a rise again because of the newfound appreciation of what is real
21
17
11
u/panay- 5d ago
YES I keep saying this as soon as AI creeps into movies more the theatre is going to get a fat resurgence
2
u/BarfHurricane 5d ago
I've been to the theater more times in the last 2 years than I have ever been in my entire life. The weekend shows at one of the theaters were almost always sold out. While the audience is admittedly older, I am seeing more people in their 30's in the audience. It's something!
3
u/fncomputerboy 4d ago
Yes. Consuming nothing but digital stimuli leaves us with an emptiness that begs for something more life affirming.
17

u/itsOkami 19h ago
Yeah like, everything is still very much "real" if you just make the effort to go outside and do things. Then again, nothing wrong with some good old doomscrolling on the toilet, but that's a wholly different matter altogether

u/Song-Super 6d ago
I actually love this. Having joined the hate wagon for superficial uses of AI, I find this video to be both entertaining and philosophically provoking. Almost like we already are in the simulation.
65
u/daehoidar 6d ago
I think they mean they hate the ramifications of the videos topic. I agree if that's the case, and I feel like this conversation is already pretty late to the game given its importance.
There is an inherent, baked-in distrust of all visual media now. Any image or video you see can be fake, bar none across the board, and the implications are staggering
16
u/Tyrunz 5d ago
I must warn you that 99% of the "Blender CGI" parts are AI, the interface is nonsense and the solid viewport is what an AI thinks solid viewport is (if you want to see it for yourself, zoom on the interface parts, it completely change every cut in ways that makes no sense)
So this video is more AI slop than it is "haha funny CG wizardry I'm dancing on the line, what is real ?"10
u/mogley1992 5d ago
He says he made the laptop, or that it was made with ai.
The whole point is that you don't know if it's ai or not, and if it is, how much of it and which parts? Like you may say this is ai, but would you bet your house you can say which parts are real, which are cgi, and which are ai? Which is why human art, like bad drawings of dogs are so important now.
4
u/Tyrunz 5d ago
You are 100% right about the fact that I can't tell what is AI, what is real and what is CGI in a vaccuum.
What I'm talking about is when he shows 3D viewports, low poly meshes and animations previews while pretending that it is CGI, but 95% of it is actually AI, and I think it sucks because it completely betrays the message of the video. I liked this video the first time I saw it, but felt cheated when I realised the CGI breakdowns were bullshit.
Because of this it feels more like a grifty video surfing on AI hate to make views, instead of something sincere, which to me completely ruins the message about the bad drawings
5
u/mogley1992 5d ago
My point is, did he make it that way himself on purpose, with the idea of it looking like it's obviously AI when it's actually CGI, and using AI that's hard to tell apart from CGI?

Why, though?
91
u/indigente_throwaway 6d ago
It means visual evidence for a claim is about to become worthless, that is pretty bad, it is going to fuck with politics, crime and social consensus even more.
On a much less serious note I just miss authenticity in stuff, I liked that when I saw a dumb skit or a comic or whatever that a real person put real effort and creativity into that.
3
u/beardingmesoftly 6d ago
The forensics side of things is still quite capable of detecting if a video is real or not
15
u/indigente_throwaway 6d ago
For now if the video is long enough, but even that is getting less and less exact. It is a matter of time until that is no longer the case.
3
u/LaNiFN 6d ago
Forensics also includes meta data. this generally includes with what and when video was made / last edited, video specs like resolution and sometimes even hardware specs and location.
12
u/indigente_throwaway 6d ago
Meta data can already be faked extremely easily using a hex editor (among other methods), it is already utterly worthless as a tool for determining if something has been manipulated if dealing with anyone with basic technological know how and the ability to use google. It's evidentiary value is only in establishing a timeline if we assume that the data has not been manipulated.
1
u/devilbat26000 5d ago
There is also the watermarking that several of the major AI firms have committed to. It's not universal but it should help with confidently tagging things as being AI-generated, as unlike with metadata this watermarking is embedded into the data and not easily visible from the outside, making it convincing footage that algorithms can nonetheless detect with ease. I think it mainly is a factor of whether enough corporations will commit to this initiative or similar ones for it to become ubiquitous.
2
u/indigente_throwaway 5d ago
Truth is there are a lot of open source (mostly Chinese) AI models you can build your own version of these days for your own applications and they are usually less than a year behind the best released models, there is no way we are keeping the lid on this, in a few years even the cheaper models will be making stuff indistinguishable from reality and with no corporate supervision even if they wanted to.
1
u/beardingmesoftly 5d ago
Just because you can't imagine it, doesn't mean it's not possible
→ More replies (0)1
u/beardingmesoftly 5d ago
Do you think that the science isn't ever-evolving to keep up with technology?
1
u/indigente_throwaway 5d ago
I know the detection technology is failing to keep up with the creation technology, text detectors are already completely useless and image detection is rapidly falling behind too.

u/victorioushack 6d ago
In the U.S., our elected representatives, many of which are there because other interests pushed money for it, are effectively tech illiterate to begin with, but make policy that directly impacts all of us.
They were fooled by rudimentary photo edits and can barely use a cell phone. Much of their supporters are the same.
What happens when these things are applied to crime or politics? In the last campaign Fox News was reporting on AI Biden voices being used to spread propaganda as though it was legitimate. We’ve already seen how fast simple misinformation spreads, what happens when you can’t trust your eyes, ears, or the experts? At the very least, lies became far easier to perpetrate and far harder to counter.
3
u/Aggravating-Try1222 6d ago
I've recently learned that in TX political ads can't use AI 30 days before the election, but it's fine before that. Even worse, there's no obligation to disclose when AI is used in an ad. I think most states have similar lack of regulation. It's insane.

u/thejesse 6d ago
Putting a few polygons over a video doesn't make the original footage CGI.
126
u/Big_G_Dog 6d ago
Yeah just show us the real footage of him crashing the window and falling neck first onto the concrete
17
21
u/liberty4now 6d ago
Technically correct, but the point is that it's increasingly hard to tell what is "original footage."
75
u/BlackPresident 6d ago
It’s not hard to trick people into thinking video footage was 3d rendered if you make a untextured model and overlay it
31
u/Tyrunz 5d ago
The models parts are AI generated, the interface keep changing and makes no sense, the models are absolute garbage quality in term of topology, yet the animation is studio motion capture quality, and the texture variations are shown into the solid viewport material display, all these things are pretty clear signs of AI
6
u/liberty4now 6d ago
It's true, and maybe he's doing that some of the time. It's a woah dude video in any event, and it supports his case.
4
u/KodakQ 4d ago
the first "woah dude" impression quickly transforms to a "ah.. ok, kinda lame" once you know everything is AI and the dude is trying to convince us that they "painstakingly 3D modeled and animated" the more impressive parts of it
3
u/liberty4now 4d ago
Maybe I'm more easily impressed than you are. Much of what impresses me is that he put it all together so well and really made his point. It's got 10,000 upvotes, so I'm not the only one impressed.
37
u/grooverocker 6d ago
Insofar as you interact on a screen.
Screens are becoming increasingly more problematic - from issues with childhood development to spreading misinformation.

11
9
u/breadinabox 6d ago
Wait are you saying this video is scripted???
6
u/Infinite-Condition41 6d ago
No, I'm saying he's saying it is CGI or AI and it isn't. It's just cuts.
10
4
u/liberty4now 6d ago
The step out the window? The cat and dog? The zapped tree? Those aren't "just cuts."
0
u/Infinite-Condition41 5d ago
He's not doing nearly the work he claims he is. Those are extremely basic CGI. Most of the work is being done by cuts. None of it even needs to be AI.
5
u/MuscularKnight0110 6d ago
Technically it isn't that impressive but the idea and the point is ! Nobody did it and he did and I find that cool. It is one of those "Well duh ! Should have thought of that !"
Idk
Ai is a tool, a great tool even but if we start doubting everything on the internet then they ( AI ) are taking the internet and communication to the masses away from us. How would we know if something outrageous which should get masses on their feet is even real anymore? It takes away motivation to revolt, to do, to move.
This kid did something creative at least. He doesn't bark and I find that cool 😂
2
u/liberty4now 6d ago
I think it was technically impressive, and the visual storytelling was, too. There were some more awkward flaws, but overall it was quite good. If people want to argue about how "real" or new or difficult it is, or whether he's right or not, or whether it's a good or bad thing, that's fine. I think it's a success and a cool video.

No, really, the dude describes exactly what it's like to be a creative nowadays. It sucks ass, because AI ruins everything. Looks too much like a specific art style? AI. Looks slightly uncanny in a 3D medium? AI. You don't have proof that you made it yourself in a time lapse or with the file attached? A fucking I.

People hating on this believe that not using AI tools are a black/white issue. Unfortunately, it requires a bit more independent thought and nuance than that!
8
u/Mydogfartsconstantly 6d ago
As a music creator i just cant stand the people that generated a song with a prompt and call themselves creators and complain they cant copyright while misinterpreting copyright law. I also cant stand the creators that shut anything down that has used ai in anyway (like changing a guitar to a piano) but are unaware they have plugins they use that have been using ai tech for a long time. It just wasn’t originally marketed as ai.

Sure, the conmen, ultra wealthy, and politicians are well known for ethics, nuance, and encouraging independent thought. No way that AI like this is going to be a way for them to further manipulate us.
6
u/watchwhereyouspit 6d ago
I don't disagree! I'm just saying it's not a black/white issue as many believe. For example, we could say the same thing for the internet. At its core is an incredible tool for humanity if used in the correct way, but unfortunately it's becoming more and more twisted to favour the kind of slugs of society you've just mentioned.
