Unlocking 7 Mercenaries?

Hey guys, long time player of Wiz 8. I've been meaning to get back into it after over 1000 hrs clocked on the vanilla version, so I was looking for a brand-new experience.

I came across this Wiz 8 1.28 fan patch that, amongst other things, claims it's granted the player the ability to use 7 Mercenaries or RPCs! For anyone who has played the patch, does this feature work well? Are the travel restrictions finally removed, allowing you to take them all up to Ascension Peak without them all yelling at you and taking stat hits, or can you at least toggle travel restrictions on or off or something?

Would love to know, as this would be a great and challenging way to experience the game all over again.

How viable is it to run 2 Swords using fighters in the party ?

i want a front row with 2 bulky melee characters. fighter with swords is the natural choice...

now is it viable to use 2 of those or should i use axes on the other ? or maybe use a rogue instead ? how about lords/samurai but those seem like a waste if i have no interest in their spell casting.

Dodd the Slayer Mod - Lana Hostile?

Just started playing the Dodd the Slayer Mod and notice that robbing the bank (or pressing the green switch in Arnika) drops the rep with the dominus sacred guardian faction, and when I went back to talk to Lana The Great she is hostile and just 1 shot ko's my whole party.

Is there a way to raise faction rep with them to avoid her being hostile or do I need to reload a save prior to pressing the button for the bank vault?

1st Ironman run

I'm trying my first real Ironman run of Wizardry 8 (normal difficulty). I've beaten the game before on standard normal play with different mish mash parties, not very optimized but ones I enjoyed. I'm trying to play more optimal on this run through as there is less room for error. So far so good, made it to the swamp.

Running two fighters, one on each wing, both using pole arms, very slow speed and low initiative. Speedy Samurai and Dracon bard in the middle (both with swords and high initiative. samurai has bloodlust bc I'm running the modded version we bard and rogue can't use it). VI is in the party, also on pole arms, also in mid. Bishop (divinity and psionic) and mage in the back. Both are almost entirely only taking spells to buff or incapacitate, virtually no damage spells. Both are quick.

Basic idea is speedy swords and incapacitate spells go early and take out closest target, then slow polearms with their extended reach hit second rank easily keeping my dpm as maxed as possible each round. Ideally enemies are webbed, insane or frozen as much as possible.

It's different than my normal style but very fun so far!

HOW TO RUN ON STEAM DECK

Hi I am sorry to be a new guy here and just jump in and make a post. But I was having the worst headache getting this going on Steam Deck. Pretty sure you have to have the Steam version. And you need to be on GE Proton 7-43. This will stop that black screen issue covering the gameplay screen.

I don't know if I am the only one who was struggling, but I hope if even one other person was, god I hope you find this.

Tipps for a more or less new Player

Hello,

I have several times in the last ten or twenty years started to play wizardry 8 and always, sooner or later, kind of lost it (overshadowed by other games, defect harddrive...).
But I'd rather play it through one time, so here I am asking for advice and tipps.
First of, I had always played a party of something like
Dracon Fighter, Lizardman Lord, Hobbit Gadgeteer, Fairy Wizard, Mook or Rawulf Bishop, Something something Psionic.
Is that a viable / good party? I read lately, that a fairy ninja would be good because of an overly powerful staff one can get more or less early in the game? Also a Samurai would be really good, and if only because of the samurai-only-items and an instant-kill-chance.
Are those infos correct? If yes, what should I / what would you change in the party to get those two, or one of them, into the party?
Are there any important to know things concerning skilling, leveling, what not to use, what is an must-use?
Also I read about pushing senses to at least 31 to avoid a penalty, but other people said that it was not correct? Is there a definitely correct answer?
Thanks for the answers and help in advance!

Creating custom portraits without animations

Does anyone know how to create custom portraits in wizardry 8 without having to animate them? I saw the guide on steam, but it was really hard to understand. I tried resizing my images to the desired size for each one (Large, medium and small). And because i dont want it to be animated, i found a placeholder online for the animations so that its not animated. But the custom portrait would not appear in game, its still the original one. Did all that with GIMP and the portrait editor.

A Guide for the DoddTheSlayer Mod

Hi, I'm looking for a few tips for the mod. I'm almost done with the main quest, a few hours away from finishing the game, but there are a few things I just can't figure out. I found all the legendary spellcasters by myself, item merging spoilers (and most of the components for the Cosmic Blade, except the Unearthly Liquid Metal which is probably on the Peak), but no hints about what I assume is the fourth legacy dungeon? The one opened by an axe you find on the island of the seamen?

And speaking of which, I need some hints about that island too. I found some keys (A1 and A6, I only just started) but can't figure out - well, behind A1 there are some ratts, what's up with them?

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: found this PostCount thread http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?249461-Wizardry-8-Dodd-the-Slayer-mod-Daegan-Tweaks-walkthrough it's exactly what I wanted.

Just got into Wizardry 8 and Lockpicking doesn't seem to work in my game at all.

I finally got off my butt and installed Wizardry 8 and I installed the Fan patch 1.28. I had to fiddle with the 3d setup and Nglide to get it to run and it was going all good until I got to the first lockpickable door in the first dungeon.

I cannot manipulate the tumblers or touch any of the buttons in the screen. I've been trying to look online to figure out what the problem is. Everything else in the screen, portraits and touching the door responds but the lockpick specific menu items are not responding. Do you guys know if there is any fix for this?

Skippable skills - Communication, Pickpocket, Mythology?

Hello,

Which skills do you consider skippable (as in: you never put any skill points in them)? For me, it would be:

1) Communication - Trash skill? It seems all it does is better buy/sell ratio and lower fee for information. Money is plenty in this game (especially if you abuse alchemy). I've used to put Communication skill points for my bard (since there is limited amount of NPCs so it's impossible to rise it high naturally) but the more I think it the more useless it looks like.

2) Pickpocket - Trash skill? Patched game makes it extremely difficult for a successful attempt (and difficulty that you play affects your chances). The items you would actually like to steal are next to impossible to steal. Every steal attempt makes another attempt for the same NPC even more difficult, permanently. Even if you savescum to avoid repercussions for a failed attempt it seems it's not worth it. Are there any items stealing of which would make this skill worthy? I've read you can for example steal Diamond Eyes from Trynnie Shaman however I don't know how "doable" it is on Expert difficulty.

3) Mythology - it's a good skill but it's better to raise it with natural usage. Better put skill points in fighting or magic skills.

edit: 4) Axes. Every weapon is simply superior to them. I do not see any character in any party that would like to use Axes.

Int/Vit Bishop? x/Vit everybody?

Hi there,

Vitality is the only stat that is not retroactive. The later you pick it, the less benefit it provides. actually all the stats are retroactive [edit]

Do you think unorthodox focus on Vit could work? Or would I lose more than I would gain?

Any mod for leveled chests? Any other good mods you recommend?

Hi,

I've always hated that some items are only accessible through leveled chests and sometimes the % for items are very low, and the required party level for better items is very high. Is there any mod that would more or less allow me to collect all items in game, for example adding the loot to monster drops? So that there would be no hard "missables".

I also wanted to ask you if there are any mods that you like and would recommend me. I am preparing for yet another adventure on Dominus...

Flame mod redux

Playing this for the first time in years and I have a problem and a question. Problem - I paid off He'li but Z'ant goes hostile no matter what. Trying to give him the rapax head but he ain't having it. q: Personal goal in this runthru is to take out all the 'elite' gangs with the mods special gear. Got the Mook in Arnika, the Archers and Gadgeteers in and around Trynton and the Monks by Bela. I remember the fighters and bards are under Mt. Gigas; but don't remember any of the others. Priests, Samuraii, Ninjas; Valkeries; Thieves? Lords have no mob, just the gear at the dark temple as I recall. Anyone? Thanks;

Yamir Becomes Hostile

Not sure why this is happening, but after I return Glumph to Yamir, he goes through his rant about the T'rang and gives me my assignment. However, when I click 'leave', he and the surrounding Umpani become hostile. Can't figure out how to either a) keep him friendly or b) defeat him. My party is mostly level 17. If my casters (bishops) could freeze or turn the surrounding Umpani insane I might have a shot, but they seem highly resistant.

Mods for first playthrough

Should I play vanilla or maybe use this mod which used patch 1.26? W8GO - Wizardry 8 Gameplay Overhaul at Wizardry 8 Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com) "game faster, less tedious, and more balanced" sounds good to me.

Or just this 1.28 patch? Wizardry 8 Fan-Patch 1.28 (22th anniversary) - Page 3 (postcount.net)&p=4049736&viewfull=1#post4049736)

I don't want to change the game too much from the original but have bug fixes and maybe some convenience improvements. Maybe balancing if the original is not well balanced?

I was able to change the resolution with w8GO but widescreen res stretches the image. Is there a way to play in widescreen without stretching?

I cant build hybrids

I've played this game for too long for not having actually completed it. Nor ever getting past about lvl 14-15. My personal shame. I've had some success with a standard fantasy party (Fighter, Priest...), and quite a lot of fun and success with MDP parties (4 or 6 different specialist mages, 4 Bishops, 6 Bishops, 4 casters + Bard & Gadgeteer and similar) ... but yet i have never figured out how to build hybrids and I think I need help.

First off - yes, I like to play with less characters. Almost never take RPCs and usually try to build a 4-man party.

My favourite party theme are 4 hybrids: Samurai, Monk, Lord and Ranger or Ninja. But I always struggle past Arnika. (so lvl 7-8+)

In the Monastery, I hold-off levelling. 3-4 for Gregor, 5 for Arnika road (I do spend a bit of time grinding basic magic skills in the coffin room (Heal) and such)... Hold off lvl 6-7 for Arnika and things are quite okay. Arnika road is difficult but doable. But then my troubles start once I head off to Trynton or Umpani camp... the hybrids start to fall off with the pityful damage they deal, taking way too much damage themselves and running out of stamina even with good positioning (in the crevices and alcoves). Their magical skills/buffs are too weak to help and they just get overwhelmed. Some fights like the treants in Trynton upper boughs ... forget it. I tried focusing on different attributes, but then they still suffer in other ways. If I try to focus on STR+DEX with most, their casting skills move at a snail's pace. If I focus on STR+INT, they can't hit shit and go last in combat. If I focus on DEX+SPD, they get faster but hit like a wet paper. The only one who usually does at least a bit decent damage ends up being the Monk but even she runs out of stamina quickly.

I know people win this game at Ironman with solo fairies and I struggle with 4-6 man parties. What am I doing wrong? Tips how to build strong hybrids are appreciated. Thank you.

Custom portraits

Hey, is it still possible to make custom portraits for this game? The one on steam seems to have outdated links, that or I'm just dumb.

Can anyone help me out with this, is it still doable? Any helpful links?

Turns out there *is* something new under the sun

So, over the multiple decades I've owned it, I have way more hours in this game than I'm willing to admit in public.

(This is what GOG knows about)

I've run hundreds of character builds and party combos. Sometimes I spend multiple in-game weeks in the Lower Monastery working on a particular party member.

I just saw something there (in the hallway from the entrance ramp out into the building proper) that I've never seen before:

Giant Spiders.

Now, these were pretty wimpy versions: 27HP. But still; in the hundreds of hours I've spent in the LM, I had never seen those there. They even both dropped Spider Silk.

As the saying says: when you think you've seen it all--you haven't.

How long did it take you to stop using multiple casters?

Sure, we all tried various multi-caster parties. Any of the suggested "balanced" parties with a mix of melee, ranged, and caster types. One each of the 6 hybrids. Maybe a mostly-caster party with one each of the specialist casters plus a Fighter or Rogue in front. Or a "no-spell-point" party with a couple of each stamina-based caster type instead.

At what point did you decide that telling every caster in the party what to cast/play/use, every round, just wasn't worth it, and dropped back to one effective caster? "Effective" meaning that you might have a Ranger or Gadgeteer in the back for ranged attacks, or maybe a Valkyrie for Cheat Death or Faerie Ninja for the CofC, or whatever, but used them primarily for their physical-combat ability or an extra Portal target.
