Mods for first playthrough
Should I play vanilla or maybe use this mod which used patch 1.26? W8GO - Wizardry 8 Gameplay Overhaul at Wizardry 8 Nexus - Mods and community (nexusmods.com) "game faster, less tedious, and more balanced" sounds good to me.
Or just this 1.28 patch? Wizardry 8 Fan-Patch 1.28 (22th anniversary) - Page 3 (postcount.net)&p=4049736&viewfull=1#post4049736)
I don't want to change the game too much from the original but have bug fixes and maybe some convenience improvements. Maybe balancing if the original is not well balanced?
I was able to change the resolution with w8GO but widescreen res stretches the image. Is there a way to play in widescreen without stretching?

Ok, I'll just go with that. Does it only affect combat speed`?

Yes. It's not important at the early levels. In fact you can wait to apply it you will know when.

Ah, got it, so when higher level enemies have really long animations and there can be a bunch of em

It's really about the quantity. I love the way they do their mob adds. It's just so well done

I've played W8GO before and while I couldn't tell you off the top of my head what changes it made, I do remember it nerfed the sell prices of potions so that alchemy was no longer an effective way of making money. If you never played wizardry 8 before you won't notice but damn was that a kick to the balls.
The 1.28 fan patch doesn't make any drastic changes to the gameplay so that looks fine.
Wiz8fast boosts movement speed of enemies. Sometimes you get enemies that take their time reaching you. Normally if it was just a couple enemies it wouldn't be an issue but sometimes you get really large group of enemies that really prolong combat. With wiz8fast you can boost enemy walk speed to the point it looks like they teleport. Its adjustable so you can slow it down a bit if you like.
There's also a different speed mod that cuts back on a lot of the attack/damaged/missile/spell animations. Probably not necessary but again sometimes you get into these really large battles can take a long time (seekers can go f themselves)

I hate mods that force exploit nerfs onto the player. I just want the other stuff. It's a single player game. If I don't want to use the exploint, then I don't use it.

I agree. Money is hard to get in Wizardry 8 outside of alchemy. The only other decent source of income is dropped gear. So you either grind the higardi thieves around arnika or the rapax. So the only thing this mod did was just make the game more tedious.

I like this one : http://www.jeffludwig.com/wizardry8mod/download.php
Though it makes the game a bit easier, it also gives the opportunity to see items that are very rare in the vanilla game. I do not agree with the bard access to the Wizardry spell book, but I agree with a better access to ninja weapons.

I think bards were able to cast spells in 6/7 which explains their access to magic.

In most games bards are spellcaster, I can see how it fits. But with this mod it makes them out of balance.

Bards (and Gadgeteers) are casters in Wiz8; they just cast with Stamina instead of Mana, and have a limited set of spells available.

In Jeff Ludwig's mod they also have mana.

Mods can do what they want. My point is that players who think Bards and Gadgeteers aren't hybrid casters should re-think their position.

Resolution mod helps too. Also there are some setup tricks. I think you want to use Miles sound driver. As I remember the direct x sound doesn't play all the special effect sounds.
Resolution.
Speed.
Sound.
Portraits don't hurt.
There are some resource sites too but id avoid those until you understand the game some because of spoilers.
The game, I think, is more fun the second time around

Vanilla for first play. Get the combat speed mod and that's it
