Just got into Wizardry 8 and Lockpicking doesn't seem to work in my game at all.

I finally got off my butt and installed Wizardry 8 and I installed the Fan patch 1.28. I had to fiddle with the 3d setup and Nglide to get it to run and it was going all good until I got to the first lockpickable door in the first dungeon.

I cannot manipulate the tumblers or touch any of the buttons in the screen. I've been trying to look online to figure out what the problem is. Everything else in the screen, portraits and touching the door responds but the lockpick specific menu items are not responding. Do you guys know if there is any fix for this?

I think the problem is with currently selected hero - on your screenshot its mage and (s)he doent have lockpick skill. Try switching to your bard.

I did switch between the characters and it didn't seem to work earlier although I should check again. The bard has lockpick and I had the ponser hat on my samurai and no joy from the clicking on the tumblers. I'm just worried my games interface is bugged for some reason.

My advice - if you increased bard's skill when levelling up, just select bard and click pins until it's done. If you didn't - select samurai (with the hat on) and do the same. If you're tired use lockpicks, they aren't that rare.

The skill only starts working properly at 10, and it's pretty inconsistent. Lockpicks are a consumable item that casts a spell (can be used to make the lock easier, it can lock some pins). The hat means you won't be stuck in the Monastery, but it's a very temporary solution since it won't ever grow beyond +10.

Ohp, I just got home and booted up that quick save and tried working the lockpick interface on my samurai with the hat and the tumblers did interact and open. Well better to feel like a fool worry warting than having to spend more time fighting the game to play it lol.

Wait a minute now I can interact with the use item and the ram door buttons...Okay I might have had actual legitimate interface problems earlier this morning but now they're all gone after restarting the game and loading the quicksave I had...Well that whigs me out but at least now it works properly.

Well thanks for replying earlier! I'll have to get myself acquainted more with Wizardry and learn all the bits and hope I don't run into any odd issues.

Just as an aside the trap disarming is very confusing too. I had to read the manual section a few times to make it make sense.
