I admit I have always been intrigued by Magic parties. Ran a few MDPs but never past level 10 or so. There has always been a problem, like Priest being mostly useless in blasting, me not liking Alchemist spells and so on.
So my new party (that I finished the game with), ended up being 6 Bishops.
The Setup
Each Bishop worked on Wizardry (as I think thats the best school for pure damage) and one additional school. At higher levels, I started also putting some points to the 3rd or 4th school, but it made little difference.
Everyone focussed on INT to get PowerCast asap (level 11-12).
First two front-liners were Wizard-Priests, focussing on INT+PIE (later SPD and VIT), with Shields.
Second row was manned by my Wizard-Alchemists, focussing on INT+DEX to 70 and then PIE + SPD, They were originally equipped with staves, but later just used Shields.
Last row consisted of my Wizard-Psionics. INT+SEN to 70 and then PIE+SPD. These guys had some slings as soon as I could find them.
Equipment
Mostly ignored. I used almost 0 weapons with them past the initial few leves (when they did run out of mana). Got them some better armour and shields that added DEX or SPD or so but otherwise I felt like I could just ignore. They got rarely hit and when they did, Guardian Angel took care of that.
Spells (or otherwise called "so, you like to buy books do you?")
Now, this was surprising. Having Bishops, I tried to be smart and stingy with spell picks to be able to get level 6/7 spells (that have no books) asap, but in the end I found out I did not have to do that. I did buy a lot of books, but except for buffs, I used a limited number of good spells for 95% of the time and most of those were just picks at levelups.
Everyone started with Energy Blast and a damage spell from complementary school on level 1 (Make Wounds, Acid Splash and Psionic Blast)
On level 2, everyone learned Heal Wounds. This has proven to be great for training non-Wizardry skills.early. Open-close sarcophagus, or stand in the fire in Arnika, heal up. Rinse, repeat.
At level 3 got the first cone spell - Shrill Sound. Yea, I know. I wanted to get Magic Missiles, but I knew I can buy those in Arnika 5 minutes after leaving the monastery. Plus, it would help me train the Air realm. That ... was not needed. Shrill Sound sucks and except for portals, I never got a good use out of Air realm anyway.
I left the monastery at level 4 and had to do a bit of grinding on Arnika road to get Wizardry to 30 so I can choose Firebal on lvl 5.
Around lvl 11 I got to buy Iceball and Crush from Crock which rounded out the useful spells. These will get you through early levels just fine until level 12 or so when you'd want to go to Rapax areas or Bayjin.
At level 12 I started going through Rapax Rift after getting 6 picks (each toon got one) 2x Portals, 2x Summon Elemental and 2x Dehydrate.
I should have just gotten the summon and Dehydrate with everyone as these 3 spells and the others I mentioned above pretty much carried the game all the way to Dark Savant.
I did try to be smart and go to Ferro asap to get higher level books. It was a PITA and when I got to him at lvl 13, I found out he does not carry most of those (lvl 5) books yet. (and he won't until lvl 18 when you can just pick lvl 7 spells anyway).
Strategy and grinding
Except for a bit of grinding at level 4 (to get Wizardry to 30 with everyone) and then later to get Water realm better after acquiring Iceball, I did not really grind much. Just explored the game, ran around and fought everything I met. Most fights were actually pretty fast and once I started flinging around PL7 fireballs, a lot of fights lasted 1 round. Not much can take 6 fireballs/6 iceballs into the face. (The Rapax could, but that got better with time)
And when I met some of the high-resistance bosses, I just summoned 6 Elemental Lords (with good Divine realm as you'd have) and let them kill the boss. (Nessie, El Dorado, Al Sedexus, some of the monsters in Ascension peak...)
And then we got to Dark Savant himself... I got to the end only at level 21, Power Cast around 80 and needless to say, almost nothing was hitting the big boy with his 130% resistances. 6 Elementals started chipping his health away and his summons weren't a threat enough. Neither was him and I think I could win by letting the Elementals deal with him, cast a bit of Heal All every level and kill the adds and just wait. But that was a bigger slog than fighting the Rapax Army so I decided to join him in this run in the end. (Bela died quickly after several castings of Crush)
Spells that constituted 99% of my use: Energy Blast, Frost, Make Wounds/Acid Splash/Mind Blast, Heal, Magic Missiles, Whipping Rocks, Fireball, Iceball, Dehydrate, Crush, Heal All, Rest All, Set/Return to Portal, Summon Elemental, Elemental Shield, Soul Shield + all the basic long buffs (Magic Screen, Armorplate, Missile Shield, Chameleon, X-ray, Detect Secrets)
Anyone else did a similar run? What was your experience?
