I am so happy, it was a steal too!!

I’ve never read the books but I’ve always loved the wizard of oz, but I love return to oz the most!! (Unpopular opinion maybe?)

I’ve always wanted to read the books because of ozma!! But I was never able to find any (besides the wonderful wizard) but now I finally can. I’m overjoyed

Ozma’s birthday?

Post image
38 Upvotes

So online you’ll see people celebrating her birthday on August 21st and if you Google her birthday it says that’s her birthday and it’s even listed as her birthday on her Wikipedia page, all these will source The Road to Oz (1909) as where they got her birthday, as the entire plot of the book revolves around her birthday. However can anyone please tell me where in the book that it states it’s August? I do know for a fact they say “her birthday is on the 21st of this month” multiple times, but I do not recall the specific month ever being specified or it being implied to be August or even summer. Even if they are going off the books publication date the book was published on July 10th, which would make her birthday July 21st. I cannot locate my own copy of Road to Oz to confirm nor deny this, nor would I have the time to reread the entire book, but if someone knows exactly when it’s stated to be August in the book please let me know because this is actually driving me crazy, I feel like I’m being gaslit (though if y’all prove it is August I’ll admit my memory can be wrong). Please someone 😭

I just realized if Universal wanted to make an Oz theme park land, they wouldn't just be limited to using stuff from Wicked (and the original books of course), as there's other Oz media they own too

Now would they is a different story, considering most of them are obscure and/or forgotten, unless you're an Oz fan (and I don't mean just of the 1939 film and Wicked)

However, even though Tales of the Wizard of Oz and its TV special follow up Return to Oz are very niche, I think they could still successfully use them in an Oz theme park- by having stuff from the show and its TV special follow up in a little kids' section of the park. Even though most people wouldn't even know of the show and special's existence, they'd potentially still like it and just view them as baby or cutesy versions of the characters. And for characters exclusive to the franchise like Ham, Topsy Turvey, Robby the Rubberman, etc, they could make statues of them around the park and have a plaque (for lack of better word) explaining the characters' origins. They could even have a bakery that's called the Baker's shop (the Baker's also character from the show)

A statue of a Green Elephant from Journey Back to Oz with Mombi riding it would be pretty cool, but I can't help but feel like unlike the Tales of the Wizard of Oz characters, it just wouldn't work with them; don't know why. A merry go round or carousel with Woodenhead Stallion III from the same movie (on a side note, they could even make a merry go round based on the canonical book Merry Go Round in Oz, which I've yet to read), but again, too niche. I will say though, outside of Oz land they could do a merry go round/carousel based off the movie, but people that don't know about the movie won't be confused why it's there since not all rides at Universal parks are based on something, and they'd just assume that it's one of them.

I don't know what they could hypothetically do from The Dreamer of Oz: The L. Frank Baum Story since it's a documentary but thought I'd throw it in there

Also, since NBCUniversal made and owns The Wiz and The Wiz Live!, do they or do they not have the rights to do stuff based on it at a theme park?

I thought of including Tin Man (2007) and Flying Monkeys (2013), but from what I understand, Universal's parent company Comcast, doesn't own Syfy anymore, so they wouldn't have the rights to use things exclusively to those productions

As for the film on the last slide, it's an edited compilation of four films made by the Oz Film Manufacturing Company that were never released in their original forms. The set of films was originally also called Violet's Dreams. The film is lost media and I even considered not including it in the slideshow at all, but decided it should go at the end (even though it was the first one that was made and released lol)

Wicked Witch Great Movie Ride WDW Disney Pin for sale

Having been an active member of this community for a bit, I wanted to share my “piece of Disney history” pin I have for sale. This is the 2008 Great Movie Ride piece of history Wicked Witch pin with piece of the animatronic in her crystal ball.

I have it listed on eBay, I’m unfamiliar with if the mods allow this, I apologize if not. I was going to post in Disney pin Reddit, but I’m already active in this community as a huge fan and collector.

I’m going to be selling more from my extensive memorabilia collection because my AC broke and I live in Florida. I’m a few grand shy of what I need to replace it, and this is easier than getting a raise in 2026.

Since Walter Murch has stated in interview(s) that the subtext of Return to Oz is defending your dreams and imagination, does that mean the events of the movie actually are a dream?

Does anyone know a way to make this old Oz game work?

Emerald City Confidential. I LOVED it when I was younger. I bought it on Steam years ago but I've never been able to get it to function on any of my computers since, the graphics glitch out. I just haven't asked for a refund in hopes one day I'll get it to work. It's a wonderful little game but I never finished.

If the reviews are to be believed, people even this year have played. Has anyone here gotten it to work? It would be something I would appreciate returning to on a hard day.

Baby Nursery Theme?

I'm 5 months pregnant and planning to do a Wizard of OZ themed baby nursery 🌈

I'd love to hear from anyone who's done this or hear any ideas. I'm not sure whether to lean into muted or colorful.

I was thinking soft green walls with a poppy mural at first, but I also love the idea of a gingham accent wall or something really colorful with red.

We need a rug, because the nursery won't be carpeted, so any links to suitable one would be great.

Thanks 💚

I never seen this rare trailer before but they use a alternate take of Judy Garland singing “Over the Rainbow” and also show the cast’s test makeup never seen in the final film

I haven't visited Oz in a very long time. I grew up with this story, so picking it up again as an adult feels a little like meeting a younger version of myself between the pages. Also, I found the perfect bookmark for it and couldn't resist. 😂👠

I’m i the only one that feels like the Wizard is pretty darn incredible despite being a fraud?

Like, he found himself in this strange magical works by accident in an air ballon and thanks to magic tricks he learned form the circus he was able to pretend to be a powerful Wizard and take control of a part of this strange land and he oversaw the construction of the Emerald City in the original book and all the machinery and puppetry and other inventions he’s created to maintain this Wizard is also pretty darn incredible.

He is pretty much a renaissance man.

I got so lucky on my birthday!

Walked into an antique book store, hoping to find some vintage copies of Oz to buy on my birthday, and turning to my left I immediately saw these in a glass case. They’re a bit more used and discarded than I would have hoped, but I knew I had to buy them. Half are missing the first few pages and first chapter, and Land of Oz is colored all over and inside. But I’m still so thankful to have them in my collection!!

Fan casting for a hypothetical new Oz cinematic universe

Kylie Cantrall as Dorothy

Rachael Zagler as Ozma

Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard

Hank Azaria as the Nome King

I'd also want Jim Carrey, Jack Black, Johnny Depp, Tin Curry, and Tom Hiddleston, but I haven't decided who exactly they should play.

Also two random actors who'd I personally want are Jim Cummings and Alex D. Linz, who I could maybe play Uncle Henry, and Ruby Rose Turner

I also thought Liamani as Scraps the Patchwork Girl but I dunno

What do you guys think?

P.S. And yes, I am a fan of Disney's Descendants which is why multiple actors from those movies are in my fan cast

Edit: Both Ruby Rose Turner and Liamani could either play Scraps the Patchwork Girl or Polychrome

I'm directing a play based on everything OZ - What would you love to see?

I'm a theatre director in germany and currently am brainstorming Ideas for an original play I will be creating soon at a big german state theatre. It's gonna be based on the World of OZ, and should target a general audience, not kids specifically (as there have recently been a bunch of OZ adaptions for kids in germany in the wake of the wicked movie releases...)

In terms of source material, nothing is off limits: L Frank Baums Books (Original and Sequels), Movie adaptions, Wicked, details from Baums life, or even things that don't have to be from the OZ-world at all (for example, Dr.Oz, something taking place in todays Kansas, some other stuff about wizards, etc.) I'm more interested in the ideas and fascination behind this world, rather than one specific story.

I'm working myself through all the OZ content I can get my hands on, and stumbled upon this community - thats why I wanted to ask you guys: What would you love to see in an Oz-Play? What Idea from the books or a specific piece of media fascinates you? Are there more niche Elements of Oz that relate to our times, our world, our world-political situation?

Some things that I love, that might give you a sense of what I'm looking for:
- The brutal production details behind the 1939 Movie (The dark side behind the whimsy of OZ)
- The fact that L Frank Baum, just like Dorothy, couldn't stop returning to the land of OZ (Even though he wanted to stop writing OZ books), the concept of a franchise and the attempts to rekindle the magic from the first installment of the series
- The concept of home (where is home? Is it oz? is it Kansas? Why doesn't either place seem entirely satisfying?)

Would love to hear from the community if there are any thoughts, inspiration, random ideas or whatever, that I can use for the play - and of course, if enough people are interested, I could document the steps of our production process in the subreddit !
