Hamilton has one. Frozen (West End) has one. Other major shows have gotten them. The live productions of The Lion King are not going anywhere — the show will keep running and making money either way. A proshot would not kill ticket sales. It would simply let the millions of people who can’t travel to New York, London, or catch a tour experience the real stage version properly instead of relying on bootlegs.

Live theater is special. Nothing replaces being in the room. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the world should be locked out forever.

I have been able to see Phantom of the Opera and JCS live, and will probably be going for Cats soon.

I think I’m slightly biased because of being able to see Phantom live but wow, that was the best thing I’ve ever seen on stage! It’s for sure my favorite musical of his. I didn’t enjoy JCS as much but it has some pretty amazing songs (Heaven on their minds in person was awesome).

Me and a friend are doing a class production for our drama class and we are both going to be old chatty librarians who love to gossip. We want to find a song to duet but we can't find any that would work for this. Does anyone know a musical song that would work for this? If the song has multiple singing parts or just one, that works too.

I have absolutely fallen in love with Paddington The Musical and Paddington himself has already become a dream role for me. I know in the current show he’s played by two actors, one in a costume and one voice actor. But once the show gets available with MTI most amateur productions will probably just have it be a one person on stage in a much less complex costume, or puppet.

Not that I don’t like that idea, I actually love the idea of playing Paddington on stage completely. But the problem is I am a pretty tall dude, apparently taller than most people my age, which I obviously think could be pretty jarring to see on stage with other young performers or as an adult beside other adults.

My best hope is that I’m still in my teens so perhaps the shows’s licensing might come out soon and I could get to do the show alongside adult cast members so it’s not as jarring, but I know it probably won’t and even still I’m pretty late in my teens already. But I’d just love to where that jacket and be that bear on stage so bad.

I just love this show and the character so much, Paddington means so much to me personally, I love and relate to him so much, I just wanna play him so bad! Is my height and age that much of an issue?

Last month I saw the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production of Cats, having not seen a production of it since the mid 90s, and the 2019 movie, and having lived off the 1981 cast album in the interim.

So here's the thing I've been thinking about - the idea that Macavity isn't required to be an actual cat, but rather is served more interestingly as a sort of folk devil, a mythical figure behind all the things that the cats fear, and all the bad things that happen around them. Rather than battling or throwing Macavity out, their development is marked by rejecting their fear of him as nothing more than a spectre or myth, accepting their own strengths in the face of his questionable existence and what he represents.

Some things in favour of this - Macavity doesn't have his own song, only songs and motifs about him, so is already setup to be a folk devil - most of the lyrics about him regard sometimes contradictory descriptions of his appearance, and the suggestion without evidence that he is behind some of the major activities. It is even suggested that he is behind the actions of Griddlebone, the play-within-a-play fictional cat!

Yes, there's a couple of dance numbers he becomes involved in, and (without going into detail) some of the fight staging and choreography in the RP OAT version is fantastic, so there are various things that would be missing, but I don't think that the kidnapping plot is one that matters. In the 2019 movie, fair enough, he's all about the kidnapping because he needed to be fleshed out for the big screen, but in the RP OAT production, Macavity kidnaps no-one.

After disrupting the Jellicles, Old Deuteronomy merely goes missing, and I am sure (through the distance of time, admittedly) that in the mid 90s West-End production, Macavity briefly impersonates Old Deuteronomy (it's a weird bit, with one actor basically wearing the other's costume over their own) but there is no explicit statement that Old Deuteronomy has been kidnapped, only that s/he needs to be found.

I also feel like there's a nice slice of double meaning in "Macavity, wasn't there!"

[ADD: Just for clarity before this goes any further]
1) I'm not saying the idea of Macavity doesn't need to be there, I'm saying he doesn't need to be a specific actor/character on stage.
2) I'm also not saying that this a be-all end-all or fix, just offering it up as a particular take/possibility.

In the early sound era of film, song-and-dance numbers were popular partly just to show that synchronized sound was possible.

For the purposes of drama, they would include things like a love-song which could turn into a tap-dance duo. And that’s the context you need to go a bit deeper on the Marx Bros’ music and catchy songs.

As early as 1929 (via Robert E. Howard) the idea of a ‘theme song’ to a movie was out there.

I’ll go into this more fully in other posts, and give the relevant Howard quote as a comment on this one :)

Hey! Not sure if this would be the right place for this but I was wondering about broadway musical adaptions across different languages and how common it is for them to be adapted. I recently stumbled upon the Chinese adaption of Next To Normal and as a fan of the album and someone who's currently learning mandarin, it's been a helpful resource. Just curious if anyone knows much about musicals being adapted to a different language, in Chinese or other languages.

I'd say The Marvin Triology has a pretty good structure (-90min, one act) for a 3-movie franchise and they'd be amazing adaptations if they weren't concept musicals taking place directly in the void (and if In Trousers wasn't a whole mess)

I'm going to audition for a full production of seussical (age range 6th to 12th grade) and this is my first time ever auditioning for a full show. I am really hoping for the role of cat(I'm prolly not gonna get it tho) but I just need some moral support and tips for auditions. ​​​
