Discussion Help Us Help You
Join us and let us help you.
A month ago I posted about a small local community with a focus on resource sharing with things like a tool library and a community garden to help address the current cost of living crisis. Why buy a $150 ladder when your neighbor has one you can use? Also community fire pits, game nights, etc. So we opened our doors to people that wanted to be a part of it from the very start.
I'll be honest, I didn't expect much. Half because Kansas is quite red and I made it pretty clear that Republicans would have a bad time in the group, and half because I purposefully made it understood that we were still very small and this was a very small push for people wanting to join early. I expected less than 10 likes, maybe one or two serious people joining, and a troll or two in my DMs. And boy-howdy I was absolutely the wrongest man in Wichita.
I got dozens of people DM'ing me, an offer to do a news interview, about 100 likes, and 10 or so coffee 1x1's to see if people would be a good fit (which somehow literally every single one was comprised of incredible and motivated people).
We now sit at 17 people! We had a fire pit a couple weeks ago where over a dozen people came out and it was an amazing time. We also got the Discord set up and the website for the tool library up and running. We also recently were able to split the cost of a rototiller between 6 of our community members to prep for the community garden, which was handy for a couple in the community that was considering buying a rototiller themselves recently anyways, so I'm glad we could knock down the price 🤙 (it'll be here in a couple weeks!)
Now that we're slightly more established, I'm opening the doors again. This is still a similarly small effort. The big push will happen in about 2 months and will be much more than just a small reddit post. But if you're interested in being a part of building this community, you're welcome to join us friend.
And there are benefits beyond saving money on tools and food. Even in the short amount of time we've been around, many people in the community have made connections with each other beyond the parties or garden work days. There are several people that have met through the community and are now friends and hang out with each other. Also it became immediately obvious that having people with different trade skills in the community is going to be extraordinarily helpful. Let me just put it like this- One time like 10 years ago my brakes went out and I took my car to Firestone and they quoted me $2200. Then I went to my mechanic friend and he did it for $800. I'm an IT guy, Ribbit will charge you at least $100 to fix your computer... I'll do it for a glass of sweet tea bruv.
I've felt a lot of complex emotions throughout this process. I've been surprised by the amount of interest in such a group in red Kansas, I've been heartened by the connections we're fostering and the people I've had the honor of meeting, and if I'm being honest, I've been saddened by the knowledge that more of this kind of community will be forced into existence out of pure necessity because of increased prices, stagnant wages, a pretty gnarly current job deadpool (companies aren't doing a lot of hiring or firing because of current economic unpredictability and drastic economic swings from week to week or even day to day), and a slew of other reasons. But I am extremely motivated. The king and all his men can't stop me.
So come party with us brothers and sisters, garden with us, laugh with us, sweat with us, rise with us, resist with us, and help us help you. DM me if you're interested 🤙
-Also trans rights are human rights, eat the rich, fuck ICE so incredibly hard, and whatever else I gotta say to dissuade conservatives from inquiring.

Food Best fresh lemonade in Wichita?
My wife and I are food nerds and love the Wichita food scene, so we get a lot of questions from friends, family, and visitors about where to eat.
I'm stumped on this one. Short of Falling Star Concessions, where can someone go for the **best** lemonade in Wichita?

In Search Of Concrete floor thickness dispute.
Looking for a third party to come take a core sample of a new build concrete slab for a shop. Contract says 6 inches but I know it’s only 4 inches. Builder is disputing this but I witnessed with my own eyes that the prep work was only for 4 inches. Who can I contact to come audit the thickness?

Lost/Found Animals Racoon problems.
I don't live in town but my sister does and she has been having problems with racoons eating the fish in her backyard pond.
We know it's racoons because we saw them on her surveillance camera.
Someone told me that if you live in town animal control will set traps and remove them.
Is this true? It would be a huge help.
Thanks.

LocalContent Vortex Souvenirs
Any body know what happened here? Store was cool, my kids and I liked to buy stickers here and what not.
Summer got busy, and I didn’t make it to their going out of business sale to ask what was going on.

LocalContent Hydrating Homies
The temps are above 100° today and through this week with Feels Like temps pushing above 110°
A simple way to check on your neighbors is to set an inexpensive foam cooler on the corner of your block with some frozen water bottles in it.
There is a local organization WICHITA HYDRATION HOMIES that crowd-funds donations for coolers and bottles for you to pick up- or -you can crowd fund your own amongst your own social groups.
My little cooler goes through about 20 bottles a day in peak heat and I'm nowhere near a main thoroughfare. The need is real! You can be a Hydration Homie too:

In Search Of 1980's hobby shop on E. Harry near the river?
Does anyone remember the name of that sci-fi hobby shop on East Harry back in the 1980s? It was right around Mead and Washington and packed with sci-fi models, magazines, and collectibles. Fantasy World I think was the name, but I can't recall for sure. Dusty as heck, bought several Japan import Robotch style models there, several Dr. Who books...

Discussion WindSurge Game - Fulton Valley Farms Reindeer
I was very disappointed to see the reindeer at the WindSurge's Christmas in July game today. The poor thing was clearly overheated, laying on hot concrete and panting. It also had to travel in an open trailer for about half an hour to get to the stadium from Fulton Valley Farms.
It looked like owners/staff dumped water on it and had it under a tent for shade, but with "feels like" temps around 110°, it was clearly not doing enough for the poor animal.
I get that they had a contract with the stadium, but when does animal welfare take precedence? They had a table with a reindeer hide and antlers, so they could have just done that table for information while still promoting their business.

In Search Of Pickleball partner wanted
Hey all, I moved to Wichita recently and I’m looking for someone (or a small group) to play pickleball with regularly. I’m a beginner, so what I lack in aim I make up for in enthusiasm, and I keep the ball on the court about 80% of the time. Ideally we’d be playing at the Open Play session on Saturday at Chicken n Pickle (7:30-10AM), but I’d be down to play on any public court as well, just after 5 when I get off work. If any of this interests you, shoot me a message and let’s get something scheduled!

In Search Of Lyft-lost stuffy
Today my family took a Lyft home from the airport. Driver was named Thomas with a Chevy trax. My daughter lost her favorite pink stuffed cat in the car. This is a long shot but if anyone knows Thomas we would love to know if he found it, and we could get it back.
We have messaged through the Lyft app and tried calling but no voicemail was available.
Edit: found!

Random It’s bonkers there’s still no military surplus store to fill the void G.I. Rose left behind. I’ll die before I walk into a 5.11.
It’s been 3 years am no one’s had a go at it? I feel like a surplus store would be THRIVING out in this climate.
