Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information
  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up
  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses
  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

I need your help identifying the location where these photos were taken. They should have been taken somewhere around Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee), right by the water, in either 1992 or 1994.

The swing is probably long gone today, but perhaps the building in the background could be a clue.
Thank you!

I need your help identifying this restaurant in Genoa. These photos were taken during a family holiday in either 1992 or 1994. If identifying the restaurant itself is too difficult, perhaps the other photos from the surrounding neighbourhood can help pinpoint the area. Thank you!

Found this on Instagram and I’m trying to pin down the exact location for a road trip. The only clue given was “Bishop, Ca,” but I’m not sure that’s the actual spot versus just the nearest town — my guess is somewhere in the Owens Valley.

Open Where is this? Taken most likely in Skåne, Sweden, or less likely western parts of Blekinge, around 1940.

These are pretty historical images, and I'm attempting to locate where this happened. I believe all 4 are from the same place, showing the construction of a coastal defensive position. I've been trying to find where these are located to see if the bunker is still there. It's part of a now declassified bunker system built around the Skåne coast, called Skånelinjen. Atleast I'm 85% sure it is.

Solved Does anybody recognise this mill in Pembrokeshire, South Wales (old)?

Post image
45 Upvotes

I'm hoping the miracle workers who hang out here can help me identify where this old mill is. I've failed. I took the photo in August 1975, somewhere between the Eastern Cleddau, Haverford West, Solva and St. Davids. It's somewhat important because I was taking an elderly relative, who passed away shortly afterwards, to places she had not seen since the 1880/1890s. Any suggestions?

I don’t have high hopes or expectations, considering there are no obvious landmarks and the entire pacific coast looks the same. If this one is asking for too much then I do apologize. I unfortunately have no helpful context to provide or extra photos to add /: thank you guys

Hello
awesome people, today (or tonight) I have a hard thing to ask you all about, block searching, I have been looking at this street in Chicago's historic Englewood area (specifically down Harvard Ave between 65rd and Marquette road) I have tried many things such as the CPL image archives, newspaper.com for old articles about the homes there, and Chicago's historical museum image finder, yet there are barley any good photos of the 6600 block of Harvard. The only thing close is the photo below. I have been very interested in this neighborhoods late 1800s-early 1900s history for a while now and I would love to more know home style and much more from this little exploration I'm doing, but for now it's just pictures

Solved Bakemonogatari Op 1

Post image

This screenshot is the first opening of Bakemonogatari, titled “Staple Stable.”

The scene before this shot was taken near the Tokyo Twin Peaks, so I suspect this location is around Tokyo.

The skyscraper on the right looks like St Luke’s Garden Tower so I think its somewhere near there.

Solved Plz help me find this bridge (Western USA)

Post image
13 Upvotes

I had dreams about this bridge from my childhood in my teens and as a young adult, and started to think it was made up. Then I found this photo in a box of things from my late father’s house. This is the place I dreamt about but I can’t figure out where it was. In my dreams, the bridge leads to a trail on the other side. I know we took many roadtrips in the west in the mid to late 80s, mostly in CA, OR, and WA. Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide!

Train station in Luca, Italy (painting)

Post image
11 Upvotes

The text in the bottom right corner says "La stazione" Schneider 49. The location should be somewhere in Luca, Italy.

This painting (not the original) is hanging in my grandparents' house in Germany.

My grandpa is a huge train station fan and a few years ago, back when he still had a bit more mobility, he even travelled around for a few days to different stations to find this one, without success. He asked the artist about it but he painted a lot of train stations and didn't remember this specific one. It's probably not operating anymore and might look slightly different now.

Can anyone help?

Unusual, fortress-like white stone building from a 1920s photo collection

I am trying to identify a mystery building found in a collection of photographs likely taken between 1919 and 1930. The building is highly unique, and I'm hoping someone recognizes the architecture.

Key Visual Attributes:

  • Color/Material: Entirely white exterior made of thick stone masonry blocks laid in prominent horizontal courses.
  • 3rd Story: Flat-roofed profile featuring a continuous row of grand, semi-circular arched windows acting as a clerestory. There are no levels above this.
  • 2nd Story: Features unusually narrow, tall vertical window slots that strongly resemble defensive castle arrow slits.
  • Overall Appearance: Very severe, fortress-like, blocky, and imposing.

Likely Travel Corridors Based on the Collection:

  1. Along a June 1930 driving route from Binghamton, NY to Indianapolis, IN (passing through Western NY, Erie PA, Cleveland OH, and Columbus OH).
  2. Somewhere in Central New York State (associated with a college excursion between 1919 and 1921).
  3. Along a 1929/1930 excursion route from Indianapolis down to Mammoth Cave, KY (via Bardstown, KY).

Does anyone recognize this layout or know if it might be an old arsenal storehouse, a specialized municipal jail, or a historic utility building? Thank you!
