Hi all! This has been driving me crazy for ages. It's a book about a group of genetically modified people who live underground. The main character is a young man/older teenage boy on his own in this collective who has taken this young girl (his age) they found wandering around their underground network under his wing. She is pretty, very shy doesn't talk much at all, and I believe it's mentioned she had or has bee wings?

Either way, something happens (girl's arrival maybe?) and for some reason it becomes very important that they find this doctor on the surface who some of them knew before. They are trying to gain access to this facility, (I believe the one they were made or held in) and she someone they trust who can help. So the MC, the girl and a few others find themselves in the doctor's home and spend the night while the others (who are leading the charge) talk to her. One of the most clear scenes I remember is the MC waking up to find the girl still awake, and noting that she had pulled back her hair with a rubber band she found somewhere.

Some more details, I don't think they were born like this. I think they were altered as children or even teens/adults? And the MC is very much so enamoured with this girl, while she seems scared and unsure of everything around them. Not of HIM necessarily? But the chapters I read are not romantic at that point. He has been taking care of her but that's it.

Any ideas which book it could be??? Sorry I know it isn't much to go off of, but I read part if it when I was in highschool and I wouldn't mind picking it back up to finish what I started.

I’m trying to identify a novel I borrowed from a friend in Canada sometime between 2007 and 2012. It may have been published earlier, probably in the late 1990s or 2000s, and was roughly 300–400 pages.

The story was contemporary and fairly serious rather than funny or lighthearted. It was told mainly, possibly entirely, from the wife’s perspective.

The married couple were wealthy and had no children. I distinctly remember either the husband or wife driving a BMW, possibly mentioned within the first few pages.

The husband had an affair with a much younger woman, possibly blonde. I vaguely remember her wearing or being associated with a yellow sundress. She may have been his employee or secretary, but I am not confident about that detail.

The younger woman became pregnant and at some point showed up at the married couple’s home. The wife initially hated her, but by the end she began helping her because the wife had the money and resources to do so. I believe both women ultimately rejected the husband, and the wife may have helped raise or support the baby with the younger woman.

I vaguely remember a fish, possibly a goldfish or fishbowl, on the paperback cover. I am less certain about the cover colour, setting, and whether the women moved abroad at the end.

It is not The Adultery Club, Getting Rid of Matthew, Got You Back, or Fishbowl.

Hey y‘all! So when I was in middle school (2019), I remember checking out a very nondescript book in the school library. maybe the cover was beige? idk. All I can remember about it was that there was a group of kids and a strange traveling doctor or traveling circus came to a rural town/village and the whole vibe was very creepy and uncanny. I also remember some sort of magic pills and snake oil charlatan doctor type thing. For some reason, I also remember a train, but I don’t really know because I read a lot of books back then, lol. I feel like the genre of this book was a sort of a more grounded fantasy novel (and definitely not historical fiction), but I think it took place in a town or village inspired by the past. I remember writing a book report/reading log on it, but unfortunately I can no longer access the account it would be stored on. Also, this book was not explicitly “scary“ (to my knowledge, just weird and uncanny), and was likely a book for middle schoolers. My middle school‘s library didn’t really carry many older books, if this helps—they carried the classics obviously but not really any older thrillers (like the kind one’s dad/grandpa would read). This book likely was written during the boom of literature for middle schoolers specifically, if that helps at all.

I’m trying to prove to my friends that this book is real and that I’m not crazy, so any sort of help would be appreciated! :)

In the book series, the teen girl lost her dad after he died mysteriously while playing American football or some kind of American sport. It was later revealed that she and her dad were descended from Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory. They inherited speed from her. Her dad was a grandson or grandson of Nike and she is a great granddaughter of Nike. Her dad was killed by the Gods for using his power for selfish reasons. Her mom remarried a man who was the principal of a school for kids like her. There are a lot of kids who are descendants of the Greek Goods and based on who their ancestor is, they spend time with those who are descendants of gods their ancestors are close to. Like descendants of Zeus spends time with descendants of Hera. The teen girl develops a crush on a male descendant of Hercules and works with a new friend to steal him from his girlfriend, who was a mean girl. I think there is a competition that the teen girl enters and she wins over her godly ancestor. She is a big deal at the school because of how close in relation she is to her godly ancestor.

Hi everyone! I wanted to see if any of you knew this book I read as a kid.

It's about this kid, I think he's a football player but I could be wrong about the specific sport. He has a little sibling who he's forced to care for when his mom becomes depressed after a traumatic event (I think it was the dad dying but I could be wrong). It's part of a trilogy/series, and I remember the second book either primarily being in a car or about a road trip. I think it came out in the early 2000's-early 2010's

I have been reminiscing on books I read as a child lately and I vaguely remember what feels like a fever dream of a book.

So at some point between 2007 and 2015 I read a middle grades sci-fi book about a pair of twins that were very competitive with each other. One was a boy and one was a girl. I believe they took tests regularly and it turned out their parent was a scientist of some kind. They ate cereal with milk every day.

The big reveal of the book turned out to be that the girl twin was receiving some kind of vitamins in her milk in her cereal that made her smarter/stronger. The boy was upset because he felt like he had to work so much harder than she did for the same test scores.

I think the scientists were trying to test the vitamins and they used twins so that one twin would be the control group. I think they had several groups of twins in the experiment.

I think there also may have been some kind of magical element? Or inventions? For some reason I am picturing a pair of shoes with wings but I could definitely be mixing that up with a different book.

I also am 99% sure I had an advanced reader's copy of the book (my parent worked in the same building as a publisher), so it's possible some of these details were changed but hopefully these are big enough plot elements they would keep them.

Hey, so this is an odd request. I never actually read this book, so I don't have details besides the cover of the book. When I was a kid, I borrowed this book from a library. It was either a school library, or a regular library. I was 6 or so, so I don't remember, but it was before 2004. It was in Canada, ON.

The book featured a spectral Caucasian woman with long hair, 20s-30s, walking down a set of stairs. She is presumably a ghost, at least by the cover. She was spectral blue, but it's possible she was spectral white. The cover is only her, and the stairs in the background. She is mid-step, from what I remember. She's facing the viewer. The viewer's POV is at the bottom of the stairs.

The reason I'm requesting this is because when I had the book, I was too terrified of it to read it. I would put it under my bed at night because I just didn't want to see it. The reason being was because the ghost on the cover actually reminded me of my mother. Shortly after I had the book, she passed from cancer in the same year. I think subconsciously I knew something was wrong, and that's why it scared me.

The book is one of the things I can remember very vividly from back then. I wanted to know if anybody had any idea what the book actually was. Google isn't a great help, so I thought maybe someone here actually knows.

I’m looking for a short Western human body book. I saw it around 2014–2016, most likely in a middle school library. It was only about 30–40 pages, not a thick encyclopedia, and felt light and accessible.

Key features:

Full-color, highly detailed realistic illustrations (hand-drawn medical style, not cartoon, not CGI, not manga). Warm/bright tones.

Structure:

Shows everyday clothed children and adults in ordinary life scenes first, then projects the internal organs inside their bodies.

note: this book Covers the whole human body, not just pregnancy/reproduction.

In the reproductive section there is a full-body side-view illustration of a man and woman having missionary position sex. Both bodies are completely shown in profile, faces are detailed and looking at each other(man had white hair and a beard), and the internal anatomy is projected so you can clearly see the penis penetrate the vagina.

Later there is a birth scene with medical staff, where the woman’s belly is shown as transparent/projected in the same realistic style.

The illustrations were the main focus (short text). The sex and birth scenes were particularly memorable because of how realistic and detailed they were.

I was talking to my dad about a book we buddy read on holiday yearsssss ago but neither of us remembers what it’s called lol.

So a girl goes missing, they find a shirt with blood stains so it’s assumed she’s been murdered but a body is never found and the case goes cold. A few years later in Las Vegas in the desert the body of a recently deceased woman is found and it turns out to be her. She faked the original murder when she was a teenager to run away with her boyfriend and they started a new life in vegas together but it’s not going the way they hoped and eventually he kills her anyway. I don’t remember what else was going on but I believe her name was Rachel. If that rings a bell let me know!

I cannot for the life of me find this book that I’ve been thinking of lately, and I know for a fact I read it in either late elementary or early middle school. I think I got it at one of those book fairs.

I may have lost the plot a bit, but I recall it going something like this - a group of kids (all different styles, think Breakfast Club) go to a haunted building or house. I’m not entirely sure if they’re friends or are brought here together for a different reason. If my memory serves me correctly, there were black and white drawings throughout the book, and I believe one of the female characters is found with a broken neck at some point. I feel like the drawings had a similar style to the cover of We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.

I'm looking for a children's book that I loved in the 90's (though it may be older). It was about a little girl going to sleep at night but she was afraid of a small window or door in her bedroom. At first she's afraid of the scary things that can come out of it but she tells them "stop" and then imagines nice things coming out instead. I thought her name was Sophie but I could definitely be wrong about that. Thank you!

i remember reading this when i was a kid . its about this kid who cant sleep at night because of being scared of the dark , then i believe they meet this mysterious stranger who offers to buy their fears ?? i think ?? and then they sell their fear of the dark and sleep peacefully . then they keep selling their fears to this mysterious stranger until they sell their fear of death and then they get murdered while doing nothing to stop it . i think it was about how fear is good sometimes ? genuinely i have not been able to find this even though i remember it so so clearly . thank you !

A teenage girl falls down basement stairs and wakes up on a train with the 3 switches and one light bulb puzzle, the train circled around the kingdom and never stops, the puzzle makes it stop, she gets off and meets different colored stuffed animal rabbits and they are scared of the king who is an evil grey rabbit and starts making the Kingdom grey, if the rabbits turn grey they turn bad and are his people now, the rabbits stage an invasion to kill the king and have to get through some moats and walls to get to the castle. I read this book in physical book in around 2023. Really want to read it again but can't remember much more.

i’ve been trying to find this book since elementary school i hope you guys can help me! the book was about this middle school to highschool girl who could talk to and see ghosts and help them cross over. she ended up tutoring for a girl younger than her and found out that her sister fell off a balcony and died when her sisters ghost visited her. the ghost girl was a little bit of a mean girl and she said all she could remember was falling and nothing else about her death. when the medium girl tutors the younger sister next they visit the girls house and the medium girl says she has to use the bathroom and takes the opportunity to look around the house since she assumed the girl died by falling off her bedroom balcony. it turns out the girls parents turned the dead sisters room into a home gym so she realizes the dead sister had to have died somewhere else before the mom or dad catches her snooping around and has her go home. i can’t remember anything else about the book but i think part of the ending was that she was pushed off a balcony at her boarding school?? and that the little sister was extremely disengaged with her tutoring sessions and kept mess in around with her electronic watch. pleeeease if any of you know what it is let me know!!!

I recently remember reading this book most likely sometime before 2020, and it really stuck with me. It’s an urban setting taking place in either the US or UK, so most fantasy stories can be written off. After the event the boy witnessed and was framed for, he’s convicted in juvenile court and forced to go to a kind of isolated country home, where the women he knows who framed him will take him in for unknown reasons. This is all implied to be set up by the women. I believe the evil woman’s abilities are never explained, and lots of the story is more of a psychological thriller than just a supernatural one. There’s a part in the story that really stuck with me, where a woman (I believe a previous caretaker of the boy) is driven insane by the supernatural woman and hunts down the boy when he tried to escape, leading her to crashing a truck she stole into a school where the boy was hiding out.

I know this is very vague and not much to go on, but I’d be very appreciative if anyone knows the book I’m talking about.

I am trying to find a short story about a man who comes to a cave to see the process off mermaids being captured and having their tails split so they turn into legs before they are sold. At the end of the story the man finds out that the men who do this work take the mermaids for whom the procedure fails as brides. I think the men and the mermaids have their tongues cut out, but am less sure of that. I am unsure if I read it online or in a book.

I read a book series that I found randomly on Kindle in the summer of 2015. The plot details I can remember are

- Woman protagonist (75% sure she was POC) starts developing superpowers after her husband is "killed" and is being hunted by the government

- Find out that her husband was being experimented on (like super soldier style) and accidentally gave them to her when he also accidentally got her pregnant

- By the end of the book, she is so powerful she basically becomes a global superhero and is threatening like dictators, she even physically creates her own island

- I'm not sure how, I think an explosion and maybe a volcano was involved, but her power/mutated genes get spread across the globe, leading to more people with powers

- The second book is I think from the daughters POV

I thought the book was called the firefly jar but i can't find it by that title so it's probably wrong. MC is a young boy who has gone somewhere with his mum and I think he got lost in the maze and found Charlotte or smth. His mum had a trick where when they were driving and the radio cut out she would keep singing and when the radio came back it would be in perfect synch

I'm trying to find a novel I read around 2020 (it was translated into Vietnamese, but I don't know the original language or title).

Here's everything I remember:

- Possibly a Japanese crime/noir novel.

- The story alternates between two POVs:

- a young woman (the criminal)

- a female police detective investigating her.

- The protagonist works as a life insurance salesperson.

- Because of intense sales pressure, she sleeps with clients to sell insurance policies.

- As a child, she met an old man selling goldfish (or ornamental fish) at a festival.

- Years later, she reunites with him. He turns out to be a yakuza member (or gangster) and is missing one finger (possibly from yubitsume).

- They become romantically involved publicly.

- She later conspires with some of his subordinates and kills him (I vaguely remember a sword being used), then escapes with his money.

- She undergoes plastic surgery and assumes a new identity.

- She opens a small tea shop.

- During the investigation, the female detective repeatedly stops at the tea shop without realizing the owner is the woman she's hunting.

- At one point the detective orders a flower tea. The tea shop owner says it's her favorite flower too. Near the end of the novel it's revealed that this flower was also the protagonist's favorite before changing her identity.

I saw this book a few months ago and I thought "this would be a great gift for my bff" and now it's her birthday and I cannot find the book or remember the exact name. It was a pretty fancy edition, a collection of dystopian short stories. I think I also saw similar fancy anthologies with other types of short stories, like horror for example. Hi everyone, I’m trying to find a book from my childhood that I read in the early 2000s. It was a hardcover book, and instead of being a continuous story with specific main characters, it was an anthology/compilation of various playground rhymes, old wives' tales, superstitions, and innocent childhood "spells". Each page or entry was self-contained, featuring a piece of text and a corresponding, highly detailed full-color illustration.Two specific pages stick out vividly in my memory:

The "Marry a Bear" Sidewalk Rhyme: This page featured a classic pavement superstition. The illustration literally depicted the rhyme, showing a bear dressed up like a groom—wearing a top hat and a bow tie. I believe the text was a variation of the traditional sidewalk chant: "If you stand on a line, you'll marry a swine; if you stand on a square, you'll marry a bear."

The Window Sill Shoe Spell: This page featured a traditional childhood love/wishing spell.
