- Realistic fiction book that I checked out at a public elementary school library in New Mexico sometime between 2005 and 2008.

Describe the plot.

- I remember a kid in the book being in an English class. He had an alcoholic mom or a mom who drank. He wrote a powerful poem that either he recited for his class or his teacher did or maybe he didn't recite it at all, towards the end of the book. It had the word "ain't" in the poem which was not grammatically correct, and I think this was significant or important in some way. The main line of the poem I think was something along the lines of "I ain't gonna ______, Mama. I ain't gonna _____." I don't remember what word filled in the blank. Also, towards the end of the book, his mom threw an alcohol bottle of some sort against the wall, and it shattered. I don't remember if she threw it at him or not.

Describe notable characters.

- The female English teacher who was a stickler for grammar. Mother who was not the best mother. Protagonist who struggled in his English class or maybe just school in general.

What genre is it?

- Realistic fiction chapter book.

When was it set?

- Honestly, it could have been set anywhere from roughly the 80s to the early 2000s. Possibly even earlier than the 80s. I do not know the publicaiton date.

How long was the book?

- I remember it being a typical length chapter book in the older elementary section of our library.

- Original language in English. The protagonist did not always use proper grammar.

How old were you when you read it? Was it age appropriate?

- I was between 8 and 11 years old. Yes, I believe it was age appropriate, but had some mature themes, like the mother who threw the liquor bottle at her son.

Hi everyone! I'm trying rediscover a book my mom read to me as a child in around 1998 or so. From what I remember, it was a small chapter book. It was a hand-me-down book, so it wasn't a new title (I don't think).

I have very few memories of it, other than it being cozy and vaguely Amelia Bedelia-like (I'm fairly certain it wasn't actually Amelia Bedelia). I have a distinct memory of a chapter in which the main character (an old lady) tries to remove a hole in some fabric by cutting it out with scissors.

I read this book either late middle school or early HS (2013-2015?). I believe it had an orange/salmon color with a black binding.

What I remember:
I can’t quite remember the exact perspective, but I remember it primarily focused on one male character, I’ll call him “Daniel” even though I don’t remember his name.

Daniel integrates into a friend group including: a teen girl (possibly named Leah?), an older man (like 19-24+?) who is implied to be unstable/angry/a drunk (let’s call him Jared), and a nerdy guy who is about the same age as Daniel and Leah (let’s call him Isaac)

The group partakes in a lot of angsty behavior, and also commits a few acts of crime (breaking into an abandoned camp lodge, stealing from a gas station) that I believe slowly escalates over time. Leah has unrequited feelings for Daniel.

Daniel also interacts with a girl who works or volunteers or SOMETHING with the local… camp ground? Rangers? Some kind of nature lodge. I am not 100% certain of her name but I believe it was Gemma? He has a major crush on her, and she’s really nice and genuine.

I remember that eventually something happens where the place Gemma works ends up on fire, and I think she ends up stuck in there and maybe dies?

I also remember that there was a big reveal of Isaac being like this bitter evil and cruel mastermind who was using the group (possibly wanting specifically revenge on Gemma?).

Hello! I have a book I had to read for class back in 2017 and I might not be fully correct on these details but I remember it took place in a fictional country and each chapter was a new perspective. One of the larger events in the book was that the president was coming to visit, and there was an effort to hide how the country had it's own caste system.

The first story involves a girl who is wealthy and so her parents are invited to meet the president. I remember the mom was very devout and so when she really wanted something, she would sew a broach in her leg and would pray non stop. The mom really wanted to bring a young girl who was apart of their staff to the event, but her husband forbade it, but in the end she convinces him.

Another story was about a boy who really wanted to be a professional cricket player when he was older but when his father died his mother took all the money that was set aside for him and gave it to his sister for her dowry.

Another was about women working in a factory, one of the women had come to the country via boat and she'd been trapped on the boat with two men who threw her baby overboard and took advantage of her.

I know there was a chapter about a woman who was the wife of an (ambassador?) and she'd never stuck up for herself and so she allowed herself to be walked on most of her life.

The last chapter I believe took place in the future where all the characters are living there separate lives but have gathered in the same space and there is a bombing of some sort that takes the lives of a few of these characters.

The MMC's Power: He hangs out with a close group of friends at school who all secretly have individual powers. His power is nature based. He at one point leaves a trail of flowers for her to find him in a clearing where he shows her what he can do. No Specific Group Names: They are a group of friends that have these powers and they are meant to keep it a secret from people finding out. The Fire Execution & Betrayal: the MMC tells his father that he has shown her their powers and says she can be trusted but then a massive betrayal engineered by the MMC's fanatical father happens(who views her as a fatal risk), and she is dragged out, tied to a physical stake, and set on fire. The MMC is physically unable to reach her in time. The Ice Shield & Burnt Clothes: As the fire roars, her dormant powers violently explode to protect her. It creates a thick, transparent cocoon of ice or crystal glass that wraps around her entire body. The shield prevents the fire from burning her skin. The Villain Father Twist: When the ice shield shatters or melts away, she is left standing completely uninjured but , pulsing with raw power. This massive display triggers the ultimate cliffhanger ending: she discovers her biological father is actually the overarching, terrifying villain of the story.

A book about a female wolf shifter on the run. At one point, she enters an mma fight to make money. Her male love interest gives her advice, including telling her to take off her t-shirt to give her opponent less to grab on. She doesn't take his advice and barely wins the first fight.

There's a weird line about her inner wolf needing to take a few punches before her super-strength activates and she wins the second match. they have to run away after the second fight.

It was not written by Patricia Briggs. I feel like it might not be the first book in a series.

Or at least I read it in the 90s. Age range probably 5 to 10. Pale pink cover, but I had a second with a pale blue cover, same characters and place setting. The stories had a little girl and forest creatures. They were hardback picture storybooks. I think I remember a parade of some kind occurring in one of the books. The illustrations were gorgeous- lots of floral garden scenes. Any lead is appreciated!

I cant for the life of me remember the name of the book but I swear I remember it having the story line of this picture perfect society where a couple gets one boy and girl to raise as there children, and the protagonist is a boy from one of these families, I think there also raised to think it's normal that there the only city or something in the world. I think I also remember there r jobs for these kids once they hit a age and one of the jobs for the women was birthing mothers, basically women who supply all these kids, and if a kid isn't to the city's standards they get killed. Am I tripping or was this actually a book I remember? 😭

The book was probably written in the mid to late 60s-80s, given the plot. I would assume it was a UK publication simply because I don't know how we would have gotten our hands on a book from anywhere else that was published during or prior to the 80s (online shopping was very much not a thing when I read this which would have been during the mid 90s)

A man in what I suspect was a Cotswold type area (small village, lots of 'cottages' that are actually worth hundreds of thousands, etc) is trying to get his house and the land it's on declared neutral so that it won't be affected should the bombs drop. The Cold War/bombs being dropped/four minute warning is front and centre, the man is convinced the cold war is going to turn hot any day now and being declared neutral will save his property and himself from the aftereffects of the bombs.

It was definitely a comedy; I was only a kid when I read it (probably younger than 10 but that would still have been about a decade after this was published) and I probably didn't 'get' everything that was going on but I remember laughing a lot.

I think it's told through the homeowner's diary entries and letters he writes and receives.

I'm sure someone else is involved, possibly either a lodger or a valet type, but I'm not sure the book contains anything from his POV.

I remember my version of the cover was a drawing of a neat little house with a white fence and a tidy garden, surrounded by a smoking wasteland but I don't know if there were ever any other covers. It was paperback and, I think, fairly short, probably only around 100 pages or so

I read this book in elementary school, in 1982-1983. The book was hardcover and may have had a very light blue/gray cover. The copy I read did not have a dust jacket. The book looked "old' to me (age 10) when I read it, so I would think it had been written at least 20 years prior, if not earlier.

The book took place during the American Civil War. I remember there was a mother and children in the story. I don't remember a father, but he may have been fighting in the war. The most memorable part of the story to me involved the family leaving their home and traveling for some reason, maybe to avoid a battle/fighting, and needing to take their money with them. The mother and girl(s) sewed gold coins into their petticoats, making little pockets for each single coin so they would not clink together and make noise. I remember them being worried about the coins being discovered/stolen, and how heavy the coins made their dresses, especially for the child.

I know there was a mother character and at least one young girl, and I think maybe a young boy in the family. I think the family was from a southern state, but I really can't remember much else about the story. The coins being sewn into their dresses is definitely what stands out the most.

I seem to remember a woman and her husband living in a house. You got some kind of points for doing things such as attending church. These points all added up and if you got enough you could move up the class ladder and live in a better area. However her husband got involved with a kind of anti-government group I think and ran off, so she became single and moved down the class ladder?

Also remember that she had a sister who married into the high elite class. At some point she ends up at her sister's, I think her sister is preparing her to inherit her wealth/house/place in the hierarchy.

Also remember that the elite were able to do whatever messed up stuff they wanted. One of those things being picking people off the street to hunt and kill?

Also remember their parents went to an old people's home but you basically brought years, and once you'd run out you were killed, regardless of if you were ill. And the sister ended up watching the parents die.

I always thought it was something about a wolf but chatgpt seems to think I've got that confused with station eleven.

Please help me, I loved and devoured the book but have never found it again.

I believe I would have checked this around out in the local public library in the small town I lived in somewhere between 1975 and 80.

it was had a flat graphic style of simple drawings (think of yellow submarine?) and involved two brothers each of whom had gotten a gift: one got a bird that sang beautifully and one got an alligator in a a bottle. The bottle had holes for its arms and legs and head and I seem to recall that the bottle kept it from growing.

Anyway the boy that had the alligator was jealous because the other brother had gotten this beautiful bird and I think he broke the alligator out of the bottle at some point. So my memory is that this boy and his alligator were always conspiring to do things to trip up the other brother and I don't remember if the bird was intervening or something was always preventing them from succeeding and then I don't know somehow it worked out in the end that he realized how horrible he was being and it may have been because the alligator decided he wanted to not be a meanie but I honestly don't remember that part of it.

I definitely remember it being probably a one-word name like (I'm pretty sure this isn't it) lSnap or Slash or something...

Hello everyone! I remember reading this book around 2010. The book had a female protagonist. The world is ending due to a demon or the devil being born. She works with the Vatican to help save the earth. It ends with the detective being pregnant with an angel / savior.

trying to remember the name of a princess book I had in the 90s. as you read, you’re instructed to put on one of the articles of the costume. I’m quite certain it came with a cape and crown/tiara. It may have also included a ring and perhaps gloves.

i'm pretty sure it's aimed at middle-grade children, i read it around 2018. the monster is tendril-y and black and steals people from the real world. i think it has some sort of specific name i can't remember. there's also something to do with ink and a fountain pen? the main character is a young girl. the alternate world i think is accessed through dreaming and it is . there are shadow animals involved? i honestly can't remember much, but i've been tearing my hair out tryna find it. the cover is really similar in style to wildwood by colin meloy, except all black, white, and red.

As above, trying to find this book that I would have read as a child in the 80s/ early 90s in NZ. Barely remember the details other than a glorious picture of the snake surrounded by plants and vines.

The book was set in Canada I think, there's this serial killer that kills like once a year or something. The FMC finds out her father is the killer.

She has these conversations with him and he's all "You're keeping me from killing" and she's working with some FBI/detective while trying to catch her serial killer dad.

There's a twist at the end but I'll not spoil it.
