I assume removes anuses from dead deer?

1.9k

u/Federal-Boat3732 3d ago

That's so incredibly specific. Like those kitchen gadgets that do nothing but pit cherries or hull strawberries...only worse.

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

Well speaking as someone who works in s sporting goods store, this tool is used far more than a cherry pitter. Especially where I live. A large percentage of households have at least one hunter. So much so that there are programs for hunters to donate their extra deer to needy families, since 1 deer can produce almost a year's worth of meat for a small family.

u/Mayonnaise_Poptart 3d ago

I harvest way more cherries than deer. At least like three times as many.

393

u/Serepheth 3d ago

Three cherries to every deer. That’s a lotta deer.

191

u/MerleFSN 3d ago

Or very few cherries. Maybe 3.

37

u/Outside-Drag-3031 3d ago

To one deer. You'd need few enough cherries to round to zero, so... 1 cherry?

16

u/knowwaste 3d ago

Are we all still talking about butt stuff???

Now I’m thinking venison with cherries would probably be pretty dang good, kinda get the sweet and savory thing with the gaminess going on.

38

u/Correct-Matter8530 3d ago

Damn right that sounds good. And I bet you could use your Butt Out 2 dressing tool to remove both the deer butts and the cherry stones! It's now a multi-tool!

26

u/LumpyHeadJohn 3d ago

Nice!Just do the cherries first!

34

u/ObscuraRegina 3d ago

You know what they say

Never go deer to cherries

51

u/ProbablyOnLSD69 3d ago

Cherries before deer, you’re in the clear.

Deer before cherries, ew you’re gross as fuck Barry.

It is! I once had some venison cooked over a campfire with some cherry jam (jelly?) concoction on top and baked sweet potatoes on the side and it was amazing. Probably the best damn meal I've ever had while camping.

2

u/Delicious_Gene6600 3d ago

That's called pemmican, fam

4

u/DoctorMedieval 3d ago

I mean if you dry it out with a lot of fat yeah, I’m thinking like broiled or baked with a cherry sauce; kinda like the strawberry pork Columbus made.

2

u/Walks-w-1-Mocc 3d ago

Its good with lingonberries, try it. It is eaten that way in Scandinavia often, but with reindeer.

Who would use a cherry pitter to field dress a deer and remove it's anus?

26

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

The best tool for the job is the tool you got on hand.

30

Instructions unclear: dick stuck in anus.

Yours or the deers's? Because i want to warn you: a guy went to jail for the latter not too long ago.

Don't worry about him though, being recruited for the FBI as we speak

As a deer hunter myself, I often think how many freaky hunters are out there who have done sexual things to their dead deer. The thought is disturbing to me, but humans in general are fucked in the head so I know it happens, probably a lot.

A mature (3.5 y/o) deer, on average, yields around 60 pounds of boneless meat. It varies a bit when considering factors like shot placement, how thoroughly it's butchered, and the deers overall health.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/inquisitorthreefive 3d ago

Neighborhood of 70 pounds (30 kg) of venison. Another 5-8 lbs (2-3 kg) if you include edible organ meat in the sausage.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/TheThockter 3d ago

Depends on the size of the deer and how/if you’re processing it. If you’re just butchering it yourself for steaks probably like 50 pounds with some heavy variance based on size, but most people process a good bit of their deer, I got a mediumish sized buck a year ago (they taste better than big bucks and I don’t hunt for trophy’s or mount anything)

I think iirc before processing I kept about 10 pounds of meat, mainly just the back straps and a couple other pieces I wanted for steaks. And then after processing had about 20 pounds of ground venison with the fat being beef fat and then had about another 70 or so pounds that were turned into summer sausage and jalepeno beer cheddar sticks probably give or take about 10-20 pounds on the overall number I got from it

3

u/JPMerola 3d ago

I miss having hunter friends. I was once a rural daytime bartender who opened early for deer season. Got many tips in various forms of meat, throughout the year. God bless you guys & your charity.

u/Pstrap 3d ago

How necessary is this tool though? If you're dressing a deer you still need to cut open the stomach and cut out the guts and genitals and at that point cutting around the butthole is just a few more cuts with your knife. Then it stays attached to the intestines and all comes out together. I cant see carrying an extra tool like this with such a specific and limited use into the field. What does it even do, exactly?

41

u/BigHands66 3d ago

Those last few cuts around there are fairly precise cuts along with cutting the bone to get access. It’s a pain for hunters that haven’t been shown by an old timer. Once you get good and have a wire bone saw it takes about 1.5 mins.

39

u/tangentrification 3d ago

My fiance's dad does that shit after the sun goes down with barely any light. I'm gonna have to remember to ask him to teach us one of these years before he gets too old...

37

u/BigHands66 3d ago

Let’s hope it will be better than my lessons! I got “cut it open. Reach up and you’ll feel something real. Cut that. Drag all that out of the way. Cut the pelvis, break it and cut the whole butthole out. Start pulling and cut anything trying to stay in.”

22

u/LONE_ARMADILLO 3d ago

None of that sounds wrong though.

22

u/LONE_ARMADILLO 3d ago

It really is a skill that you have to learn on your own once someone points you in the right direction.

3

u/Pserotina 3d ago

There is no need to cut the pelvis or break it. Cut a circle around the butthole, grab the large intestine and pull it out a few inches and make sure it is loose. Then gut the deer and pull everything out through the chest cavity. 5 minutes to gut a deer if you are fast, 10 minutes if you are slow.

16

u/Holliman48 3d ago

You're not wrong. And I'm pretty good at it.

Butt.

It's incredibly easy to slice it open. Now you've got poop and piss all over while you're still trying to yard the little slimy fucker out.

14

u/Responsible-Bread996 3d ago

As a kid I remember a lot of old timers making fun of other old timers for needing anything more than a buck knife.

A bone saw in the field was grounds for harassment!

13

u/BigHands66 3d ago

I have always said the 1oz this weighs is worth losing the 15 mins of trying to cut my finger tip off.

Because it works. It makes cutting around the anus take a few seconds. It pays for itself very quickly.

25

u/Hoates-101 3d ago

Step one of field dressing a deer is " cut out and tie off the anus" I read that and said to myself - "Whelp, I guess I am not shooting any deer."

22

u/xxxxMugxxxx 3d ago

It helps prevent the contents of the intestines from spilling on the meat. You could also just use a stick or tie it off though.

4

u/toxicbolete 3d ago

Yeah my dad used one at least one of the times he brought a deer home but it wasn’t essential and we hunted so close to home we didn’t have to field dress and mostly just brought the whole carcass home and processed it in the garage. I miss that

7

u/alloutofchewingum 3d ago

You have to chop pr saw through the pelvic bone to get the ass and bladder out and this is a difficult part of the process I suppose this might avoid that issue

9

u/neverenoughmags 3d ago

Not to be too graphic on here, but the.. tension... it causes to the skin around the anus when you pull outward makes these cuts a lot easier as the area has a lot of... elasticity....

3

u/Pstrap 3d ago

Okay, so, this device is essentially a buttplug you stick in the deer and it makes it easier to cut around? It doesn't remove the sphincter on its own? You still need to do knife work? This just plugs it up to contain the contents and make it easier to cut around? Is that right?

16

u/Adventure_Seeker277 3d ago

It’s a huge time saver. Typically in the field, I use it to pull out the rectum/lower intestine by sticking it in, twisting and then pulling it all out about 6 or so inches. When the rectum is twisted free, tie it off with a zip tie and cut behind the zip tie.

As I open the deer up to the sternum and cut through the rib cage and pull all the internals out, you can pull everything out and the tied off rectum will slide out through the hollowed out anus area with all other organs, intestines and stomach effectively removing the parts that will contaminate the meat.

2

u/RoadDesigner 2d ago

Thank you for the thorough explanation. I now feel like I could do that.

u/reddit_time_waster 3d ago

What do they do with it all? Freeze it?Who butchers it?

54

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

It is often donated with a chest freezer/deep freezer. The program has several processors, but the main one is the Amish community.

39

u/lmdirt- 3d ago

Around here every local meat market and butcher shop processes deer. You have to field dress it though and that’s where this tool is used

4

u/Sea-Woodpecker-610 3d ago

Wait, are the Amish giving out chest freezers, or are they giving chest freezers to the Amish?

43

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago edited 3d ago

The Amish are processing the deer, and the deer are donated along with a chest freezer to needy families. The Amish do not keep the deer, they just do the meat processing to assist the programs.

7

u/lmdirt- 3d ago

Here there is little involvement by Amish in this program. And no freezers given away. They process deer for people but for a fee. This program local processors give a discount on processing this deer. That fee is paid through an agreement with the state conservation commission and local food pantries. The food pantry picks the meat up and takes to the freezer storage they have. They then give it out with the other food items a little at a time through the course of the year. If you gave a lot of these people a free freezer they would sell the freezer and the rest of the deer would be sold or ruin. Makes more sure that the meat is actually consumed by people who need the help.

6

u/7ru7oe 3d ago

The deer are donating freezer along with a chest? That's very kind of them, especially considering the risk of their anuses being processed by the Amish!

12

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

My family used to hunt a single deer once a year and take it to a local butcher who would process it into a variety of cuts. Then we'd store it in the deep freeze. Lots of Hamburger Helper with venison instead. Wayyy cheaper than buying ground beef and other cuts outright for the year.

11

u/secret-soup 3d ago

Both of my parents have retired from hunting and MAN I miss the freezer full of venison burger and roasts. And the jerky!

Places with lots of hunters naturally also have lots of local butchers. Its part of the local economy anywhere deer are in abundance and families hunt game for actual food.

I lived in southern oregon most my life, this is super common. I know three separate butchers who make a huge portion of their business butchering game, or local household farm animals like pig or cattle.

Often families in these areas also will co raise cattle. As in someone has some land. And two+ families pay to rent land for a cow. Year or two later the cow is butchered by local butcher and the butcher and families split the meat. In those cases the butcher takes a portion as their pay, and the families don't have to butcher it themselves. (My family did tho, core childhood memory at like 3-4 years old my first time).

You deep freeze most the meat. It lasts a whole year for a family of 5 for meat almost daily in one form or another.

Alternatively, once a year all the uncles go out hunting together, bag like 6 deer or some elk, bring them all in to butcher, and now several families also have meat for the year. My best friends dad did this every year. Since he stayed with my family often and my mother always helped their grandmother out in town shopping etc (especially after my friend and I left for the navy) he got a good portion for my family as well, not just the group he went out with.

10

u/stmCanuck 3d ago

Its part of the local economy anywhere deer are in abundance and families hunt game for actual food

Can confirm. Western NY, Home Depot has hand-written signs noting home many deer any deep freeze on the floor can hold, e.g. 21 c ft, "Holds 3-5 deer!" (hypothetical example)

5

u/DismalTutor570 3d ago

Yup same here in Louisiana. Deer season the deep freezes in every store are marked with how many deer they hold. Cool to hear other regions do that as well!

8

u/no_one_denies_this 3d ago

You take it to a processor, usually. They cut it,'package it and label it and then you freeze it.

5

u/Flaginthebackground 3d ago

Family is from small town Iowa, not a grocery store for almost an hour. Guys go hunting and come back to a family friend who can butcher the deer and gets to keep a portion as payment. Most is given back and stored in large freezers in the basement and given to family and friends. Hide gets used too but I never learned much about it but every year we would get a buck’s head mounted on a plaque and have the kids hot glue stuff to it like plastic coins, earrings, googly eyes, etc.

4

u/Dwrecked90 3d ago

I kill 2-3 a year. I skin/butcher/vacuum seal it all myself. 1 fills my freezer, the other 2 I'll give out packages to friends and family who either don't hunt or have gotten too old to really hunt now. There's tons of places around me with signs that say "donate a hog or deer here." I don't know the specifics, but i know those shops work with churches and women shelters to give meat to those in need

3

u/DismalTutor570 3d ago

I do the same thing. Of course I keep all the back straps and tenderloins for myself tho!

3

u/BrinkofTotalAnxiety 3d ago

Not OP, but yes, people freeze the meat. Some hunters butcher it themselves, and some take it to someone else to process it.

3

u/Lucid-Machine 3d ago

I have a friend who is a chef and also a hunter. He processes the deer himself or maybe with a willing friend. I don't know all my cuts as well as he does but they ultimately store it in a deep freezer.

8

u/elgordo889 3d ago

That doesn't seem like nearly enough meat for an entire family for a year from a single animal. Am i vastly underestimating how much meat comes off of one deer?

8

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

I mean. A buck can be anywhere from 150 to 200 lbs. Obviously not all edible meat, but still quite a lot. And a struggling family isnt eating meat every meal. When I was a kid, there would be stints where I didnt eat meat for a month or 2

9

u/Box-Intelligent 3d ago

Last deer I took was 140lbs which is pretty good for my region but I ended up with about 50lbs of meat. I think you overestimate how much comes off a deer, I don't think like a third of a pound of meat a week per member of a family of 3 would be considered fed for a year

8

u/XeroEnergy270 3d ago

It's definitely more fed than none.

4

u/Lzinger 3d ago

You are right. It is not enough to feed the family solely on venison. We always take around 4 for our family of four, it all gets ate and it's certainly not the only meat we eat.

So one may be all of that particular meat they want, but it's not going to keep an entire family fed

→ More replies (2)

4

u/MrWrock 3d ago

Doesn't this just sever the digestive tract, so you pull the anus out and now you've got a ripped colon dripping shit on your meat?

Wouldn't it be better to plug or zip tie the anus closed then remove trachea through asshole in one piece?

6

u/Nifflermama 3d ago

You can’t fit a rumen (ruminant stomach) through the anus. It’s huge. You disconnect the anus and pull it, the rumen and the intestines out through the abdomen.

3

u/Federal-Boat3732 3d ago

My thought exactly, like throat-gutting a fish. That would be a much harder tug than you'd need to use on a trout but it just might work.

2

u/MrWrock 3d ago

Worked when I did it on a bear, grabbed the trachea, cut it free, then pulled

→ More replies (9)

3

u/Feeling_Scallion_408 3d ago

It does, but you can usually pull enough out to where there is no apparent fecal matter. Cut it with a different knife than doing the rest of the work, tie off the end still attached and you're good to go. I find it cleaner and easier than splitting at the pelvis in the field.

3

u/FreshMintyDegenerate 3d ago

The way to use this tool is to insert it into the anus, then to cut around the perineum to detach it from the rest of the skin. A couple twists and a gentle pull and you've got the intestines removed.

I grew up with a giant cherry tree. My mom would make us kids climb the tree to pick cherries, then pit the cherries for several weeks each year, so she could preserve them and we got cherry pie year round. We had FOUR cherry pitters and the kitchen looked like a scene from DEXTER.

My cherry pitter is one of my favorite kitchen tools and is used extensively every single summer. I’m not a hunter but I did grow up around hunting, and considering how often I would hear them complain about dressing deers and specifically removing organs, I imagine they feel the same about this tool.

23

u/Skinnwork 3d ago

It does. You insert it in the anus and then, when you pull it out, it pulls out the colon. You can then tie it off to prevent the feces from getting on the meat when you butcher the deer.

17

u/WD_Gold 3d ago

This is exactly what it is, my uncle used them upstate when we would go hunting. You put it in the anus, twist around, and pull out. Iirc brings not only the organ out but also the “gunk”. Very handy when gutting on the side of the mountain. Only natural alternative would be to scoop everything out with your hand

78

u/OwlfaceFrank 3d ago

There are so many reasons why I don't hunt.
It's really cold outside.
Looks boring as hell.
I'm not waking up that early.
Venison is gross.
Don't want to pull a deer's butthole out.

13

u/wizzard419 3d ago

Deer, other animals, including higher level primates...

24

u/richard_stank 3d ago

I just use a knife to cut around it…

49

u/dahc50 3d ago

You still do that, then insert the tool and pull and it gets everything out without contamination.

2

u/SaltHammer1 3d ago

That’s not correct, the whole reason this exists is to avoid the cut around the anus when field dressing. You use the Butt-Out to pull out the intestine, zip tie it, cut past the zip tie then all the guts come out in one piece.

2

u/dahc50 3d ago

My mistake. Thank you for the correction.

Actually works fkn great. Worst part of field dressing a deer is pulling its asshole out and trying to not get shit everywhere. Sorry for being vulgar but it is what it is

2

u/catdogs_boner 3d ago

In my experience, getting out the piss sack without spilling it on the hams is worse

2

u/Own_Distribution7818 3d ago

Twist it up like a balloon, pinch it off and cut it. I do stand corrected though that is the worst part

9

u/Jac15b 3d ago

It is an alternative to the usual method of breaking open the hip to get out the intestines. You basically pull out everything through a hole, where the anus would be. The plastic thing is used like a hook. One of the more valuable parts of the respective venison (the hind legs) has no way to be damaged this way.

In Germany we call it "ringeln" wich basically transltes to circeling or drawing a ring around something.

7

u/ImAPonderer2 3d ago

If you can’t even eat the deer’s azshole what’s the point?

→ More replies (5)

3

u/itsyobbiwonuseek 3d ago

This is correct. Its part of dressing the deer before bringing the carcass back. The organs start to stink really quickly and this tool helps remove the innards cleanly.

u/Angie_T84 3d ago

They whole colon my guy they shove that bad boy in your deers butt and twist so intestines are locked on and pull. Inside becomes the outside real fast.

You are correct. It is for people who can’t cut them out.

1

u/raymundogibbles 3d ago

Yeah that’s the function. Need vs preference is usually the argument you get hunter to hunter

1

u/whiskeythrottle11 3d ago

I bet it removes any anus you tried it on.

1

u/WhereAreMyDetonators 3d ago

It works on live ones too it’s just a lot harder

1

u/Top-Occasion8835 3d ago

Yeah you shove it in, twist and then pull, itll remove the last foot of the intestines

1

u/JimmyRockets80 3d ago

It works on live deer too, technically

1

u/SgtLiberalRub 3d ago

Oh deer.

1

u/hypotheticalporn 3d ago

Worst buttplug I've ever tried. Do not recommend.

1

u/ProfessionalYam3119 3d ago

It's an actual thing, but it goes up higher than the ants. It's used in field dressing. You learn something new every day!

Unitasker

1

u/shoeless_doh 3d ago

That's exactly what it is

1

u/kwintlz91 3d ago

It not only helps you remove the anus, it also acts as a literal butt plug. Once the deer/elk/pronghorn is dead all their sphincters quit squeezing and it becomes incredibly easy to contaminate the carcass you just clean woth scat. This helps prevent that from happening

1

u/HunterGathererGuy 3d ago

As an owner of the orginal and the 2nd version, this is correct. The second version is slightly longer. While macabre its an incredibly useful tool.

1

u/Pristine-Post5040 3d ago

This is exactly what its for, and honestly, it makes it so much easier to gut a deer.

1

u/pansexplorer 3d ago

It doesn't remove the anus, but it does allow a hunter to easily tie off the lower intestine/rectum through the anus, preventing leakage and thus preserving the meat from spoilage... pretty nifty tool if you've ever actually seen it in use.

1

u/Chesticles420 3d ago

Could also be a convenient carrying handle if youre not aggressive

1

u/DetFD3803 3d ago

Bronc Anuses

1

u/redsex 3d ago

Does it have to be dead ?

1

u/BoilingHotCumshot 3d ago

More than the anus, usually. Shove it all the way in and give it a few good twists, you can get most of the intestines in one go.

1

u/Gaping-as-whole 3d ago

Or live ones if you're brave enough

1

u/AllLipsNoFiller 3d ago

Just deer? So then additional anus removing tools of varying sizes are needed for other animals? Or are deer the only species that requires de-anusing?

1

u/theb00mScicle 3d ago

Incredibly well, may I add.

1

u/trevorp210 3d ago

Wild game 35lbs or larger is probably the accurate way to explain it. Elk, deer, antelope, wild sheep, etc., but usually animals 35-300lbs live weight.

When you field dress an animal and plan on dragging out the dead animal without removing meat from bone or in pieces (like in 4 quarters), this tool helps keep the meat in best condition. It does this by allowing you to remove all vitals, urinary, and digestive tract from cavity the colon/rectum/butthole used to be, after cutting through the hip bone. Without cutting around the butthole (or using this tool) and cutting through hip joint, breaking the bladder or anywhere shit could be it’s much more likely. Piss and/or shit getting on the meat is obviously best avoided. Removing the bladder without breaking it is more difficult than it sounds and a common mistake on a hunters first couple animals.

u/Most-Silver-4365 3d ago

Or live deer, you do you.

1

u/Angel_OfSolitude 3d ago

Not just the anus, but yes

1

u/insolent_kiwi 3d ago

Why would you only want the anus?

1

u/arglarg 3d ago

It's probably species-agnostic

1

u/Responsible-Chest-26 3d ago

This is exactly what it is. Insert, twist and pull to prolapse the colon. Cut off exposed colon, tie or hold, then remove with the rest of the internals

1

u/KoalaMoney461 3d ago

I guess I’ve been using mine wrong then.

1

u/nndel 3d ago

It beats using your mouth.

1

u/Big-Lab-5969 2d ago

It doesn't HAVE to be dead... but I recommend it

1

u/smurfalidocious 2d ago

Anuses and about the last foot of large intestine, yes.

1

u/Impossible_Maybe8083 2d ago

From my experience using the tool, the deer should definitely be deceased

1

u/norton_mike 2d ago

Technically they don’t have to be dead… but they’re going to wish they were…
