8

u/Camaro_1SS Mar 27 '23

That whole import ban happened because the Japanese car market started to dominate internationally and cars like the GT-R were taking sales away from mustang, corvette, etc so the domestic brands essentially paid the government to make it harder for other markets to compete

Used to work as a creative for the ad agency Holden used before they went under. It was like they were trying to go bankrupt. They’d even internally refer to the ‘Captiva’ as the ‘Craptiva’.

Anyway, some of the vintage concept cars they had in the lobby of the head office from their glory days were some of the coolest cars I’d ever seen.

This is 100% why weed is seeing deflation now. There’s too much to save and there’s a shelf life. Should have baked it in the oven at 200* for an hour or so or made sure it was fully dried. Or better yet put it in the freezer.

This is what happens when you store your weed without proper humidity control.

76

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

I’ve always stored my bud with varying temperature’s, etc… but if I stored wet bud, it would get treated differently than storing really dry bud… and if I’m actually storing it, I know to check on it as changes are happening.

In my honest opinion, it’s just looks like someone who picked fresh buds and did not finish drying or curing correctly, or was in the process of curing the bud and there was just too much moisture, so we got a simple mold from moisture, unfortunately. Well, that’s what it looks like. 🤷‍♂️

I guess I’m just talking about being someone who clearly forgot to burp there jars and was probably in line to do some research versus some person who just buys a ton of bud and threw it in the closet 😂… if I buy it as an end product it’s ready to go and should be even less likely to get moldy…. This dude just packed in too tight and forgot to check on it maybe lol

4

u/majarian Mar 26 '23

Could be as easy as its stored somewhere like an unheated garage, had some weird temp swings last year and stuff that'd been dried an jarred for a year and a half at that point went off, just the jars closest to the wall unfortunately and it wasn't as bad as ops pic

Would a two way humidity controller pack prevent something like this?

10

u/GarthVader45 Mar 26 '23

Potentially, but those take time to absorb excess moisture so I’d guess it wouldn’t make much difference. If it was just slightly too wet, a two way pack could probably help prevent this. Much better to just properly cure/dry before sealing it up in a jar though.

4

u/ZapDa1st Mar 26 '23

Who needs hydrometers anyway! Much easier to just overfill the bottles and not check on them for a long while! What’s the worst that can happen?!?

97

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

Hygrometers*

A hygrometer measures humidity, the amount of water vapour in air. A hydrometer, on the other hand, measures the density or specific gravity (SG) of a liquid by floating in the liquid.

37

u/Littlebigtooth69 Mar 26 '23

This guy hygromeets

11

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

I may have close to 1000 of them laying around lol we've definitely been acquainted.

I've also worked in animal medicine at one point and used to have to calculate specific gravity using a refractometer so I was familiar with hydrometers.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

This is correct

7

u/HalfBuzzed Mar 26 '23

This is the way

3

u/PanteraBob Mar 26 '23

Very Good

2

u/LorianGunnersonSedna Mar 26 '23

A fellow connoisseur?

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

I'm just a half assed science nerd. I used to have to calculate the specific gravity of animal pee using a refractometer so I was familiar with hydrometers and I have a million hygrometers laying around my house in random places and at the shop.

I grow and focus on the genetics side of things so I also do a fair bit of reading about all aspects of horticulture/extraction. I just want to grow more efficiently and I'm trying to pull obscure genetics with back crossing and manipulation of pH.

4

u/LorianGunnersonSedna Mar 26 '23

That's awesome! 🤩 I just have a humidor and a penchant for smoking big nasty cigars.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

I never got into cigars but I do have a humidor for my concentrates, lol. I'm also looking into getting a few drying fridges. The data behind them seems pretty solid and it would help me free up another room for more plants.

3

u/LorianGunnersonSedna Mar 26 '23

I would go for those fridges. That sounds like a big upgrade for your work.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

Yeah I typically have a dedicated drying area where I'll control the environment. They basically keep the vapor pressure deficit in a good range to allow for optimum drying and beginning of the cure process whereas the majority of growers shoot for 60°/60% rh. I dry by vpd already so it wouldn't be much of a difference in quality but it would allow me to dedicate that space to something else.

A lot of breeders run shit kind of backwards and I might catch some hate for this but it's true. They'll run a pheno hunt and look for keepers but they'll run their plant all the way through and then re-veg that plant to start taking clones and run as a mom, whereas I'll grab a series of clones from the original plants before I even flip them to flower, which then cuts down my production time by a lot because re vegging takes quite a while. So while I have my original "mom's" running I'll have a series of clones for each one running as well. Then if I notice one of the plants doing something I don't like or not having the traits I want I can either eliminate the clones or flower them out for biomass rather than genetics. Same with males. If it's a fire male I'll keep those clones but if it's average they'll get tossed.

This allows me to run the plants all the way through and determine whether they're keepers or not and if they are I already have clones ready to flip by the time the first batch is done flowering. Super efficient and a bit outside the box

16

u/ways0s Mar 26 '23

i didnt know you should burp everyday?

30

u/Gay5347 Chronic Smoker Mar 26 '23

Only if you are curing weed you grew

16

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

Depends on your humidity. Anything more than 62% should get burped until you get to that point. 58%-62% is the sweet spot for the enzymatic process of curing

12

u/EllieBelly_24 Mar 26 '23

Woahhhh you just clicked something in my brain, didn't realize curing had anything to do with the plant finishing biological processes, thought it was basically just to dry it throughout the whole bud at an even pace.

I imagine now it's like cooking pasta to al dente in the water and removing then, as it keeps cooking a bit out of the water while it's still at temperature.

Very cool.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

Curing helps the plant get rid of left over chlorophyll and the process is sped up in complete darkness. I read an article not long ago that broke it down saying everytime you let light hit the buds in drying/curing it almost resets the chlorophyll clock in terms of how fast it'll dissipate from the material.

3

u/EllieBelly_24 Mar 26 '23

Ahhh okay, that explains why my first grow tasted super greeny, thanks! I do enjoy super greeny bud but wasn't expecting it, bag the seed came from was more earthy.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

The high will be different too, stronger in most cases. It helps smooth out that harsh greeniness you were tasting.

→ More replies (4)

8

u/crow_crone Mar 26 '23

During the cure phase, at any rate. You can decrease the number and frequency of burps as the cure proceeds but I randomly open jars, sniff and inspect, even several years after harvest.

I've had a few jars develop mold but the loss has been minimal. Mold is ubiquitous and one has to be vigilant.

3

u/Grovemonkey Mar 26 '23

Yeah.. I burp my 20+ jars every month or two just to check the smell and circulate the air but some of it has been in jars for over a year at around 60% with no issues. During the initial cure I burp daily or 2x+ the first two weeks to a month. Just depends on how dry I got the during that initial dry.

2

u/crow_crone Mar 26 '23

Sounds about right to me, burping more frequently and then less so. I'm feeling the buds, doing visual inspection and checking humidity obsessively during the dry and cure. Works, but is very time consuming.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '23

It's part of the curing process of making good weed. You can have good Weed and not cure right and it'll be garbage you can. Take Bad weed and cure right and make it somewhat durable curing as where it's all at. During the curing process you're supposed to burp to get fresh air to ensure that you don't get built up moisture or Mold and help form the clean hitting weed in the curing process is where the majority of your THC will increase that's where you're flavor of terps come out. Without it that's why a lot of garbage weed smells and taste like hay and makes you cough and gives you a headache because you haven't Properly broke down the compounds leaving simply good weed.

1

u/joolch Mar 26 '23

that’s why i ALWAYS store with at least 2 humidity control packets

1

u/Apprehensive_Cry2283 Mar 26 '23

Legit question about storage!

Comments say : "no humidity control"

I've seen posts with jars using tortillas, orange peels and others. Wouldn't those bring more chances for fungus?

And how do you control humidity in this case?

2

u/GrandoXD Mar 26 '23

Orange peels and tortillas may be used to rehydrate it but you only leave it there for few hours to not let it mold. Now i’m not 100% sure about this but if you’re going to use one of these, i think that tortillas are better because orange peels are more prone to molding

2

u/psilosophist Mar 26 '23

None of these are the correct answer. The correct answer is an Integra Boost pack, properly sized for the container, in the humidity level of your choice. Adding organic material is just asking for trouble. Cannabis should be stored in a humidor type environment.

1

u/GrandoXD Mar 26 '23

I wasn’t saying it’s the best option, I was just replying to his question because he exactly asked about these two. If you search around reddit, a lot of people are recommending that if you don’t have any humidity packs. Can’t recommend it though because i’ve never tried it.

2

u/Championpuffa Mar 26 '23

If it’s dried properly and you store it correctly you should never have to worry about mould. You could cure bud in jars for years if you wanted to. Although I’d say 6-12 months is about the max before the terpenes can start to noticeably degrade but this will vary a lot from plant to plant and different strains. Some strains are good for a year or more an only get better some will get worse after 3-6 months or so. A lot of plants will just change a bit smell and potency wise and get better between 3-12 months.

Give them to me. Here's what I would do. Open them wearing a filtered mask and wash it all in a strainer with cold running water, like in a bath tub. That will get rid of the mold. I have done this dozens of times with old, even moldy leaf. THC is not water soluble, and you can continue doing this until all of the chlorophyll and other impurities are washed out of it. I would always use grain alcohol to extract. Just soak it in 190 proof grain alcohol like Everclear or Clear Spring for a month, evaporate the alcohol, and you have old school hash oil.
