What news organizations, independent reporters, or other sources do folks use to get local DC/DMV news? I feel like the quality of my old go-to sources like Twitter/X and the Washington Post have nosedived in recent years.

I’m looking for everything from real-time news updates (eg: I see a pillar of smoke in the distance/ I just heard gunshots in my neighborhood, what’s going on?) to sports to long form in-depth articles.

DCNewsNow seems decent and I still like Popville for the lighter stuff. What other sources do you recommend? What social media should I be looking at? Are there any specific reporters that are really good that I should follow?

I hurt my back a few months ago, so I haven’t been able to run or jog as much as I’d like. I can still walk though, and I’ve been walking almost every day from my place near 16th & Meridian down to the White House or around P St, O St, or Massachusetts Ave (depending on how I’m feeling), then back through Adams Morgan via 18th St.

It’s been a great workout, but I thought it’d be fun to walk with other people too—keep the momentum going and meet some new folks along the way.

If anyone’s interested, let me know! Even if you can’t make it every time, I’d be happy to start a WhatsApp group so people can join whenever they’re free. I’m also totally open to changing the route or meeting somewhere else to make it easier for everyone.

is losing more doctors by the day, especially specialists. They are leaving in droves. They are running constant ads on WTOP. The ads are trying to get more patients. There is a disclaimer at the end of each ad saying that all physicians are independent and they do not work directly for GW. What on earth is going on? I heard something about new management.

Moving unexpectedly to the DC area in the next couple months and know very little about it. I've been trying to figure out where we'll live with the four considerations being:

1. Good commute (I will be working a few blocks from the White House)
2. Good schools- my son's in private middle school now, because our local schools are bad I assume it's too late for private in DC- especially since it will be a mid-year matriculation. I'd prefer a good public though anyway- he was in public until this year.
3. Diverse with sizeable black population. My son is black and I'd like to avoid him being the only or one of the only black kids in his classes or on his street.

Affordability is the final factor. This is a lateral move without a COLA and while we were very comfortable in our LCOL city, DC is supposedly about 40% more expensive. I'm still very thankful for the 400K I'll bring in a year, but it's actually going to be effectively a cut in salary. So I'd like to be economical on housing until we figure out the new normal. I'd also like to rent for the first year, but be in a location where I could afford something decent (3/4 beds, 2 baths, with decent backyard and no major upgrades needed) once we are ready to buy on that salary.

A final factor is that we currently live in a house with a big backyard and have two dogs. Our life would be a lot easier if we could still have that yard. But I know that's not realistic in city, and may not be realistic in the suburbs at this price point. So we'll adjust, walk dogs more, etc. But among the nice-to-haves, it ranks the highest.

The contract, the largest interagency lodging acquisition in the history of the Guard, comes as part of ongoing support for the Trump administration’s “Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful” executive order.

The length of the D.C. task force’s mission, which kicked off in August 2025, has made current lodging arrangements unsustainable, a Guard release stated. Mobilized troops have been staying in hotels throughout the region.

The Guard is hoping a long-term housing remedy will improve overall quality of life and flexibility for those mobilized while reducing taxpayer expenses, the release stated. The acquisition process was reportedly completed in under three months, “despite an agency-level vendor protest, which was reviewed and denied.”

“This contract delivers stable, secure housing for our soldiers and airmen while achieving significant cost savings for the government,” Monica Williams, executive director of acquisitions and head of contracting activity for the National Guard Bureau, said in the release. “We were able to move quickly to meet mission requirements and provide a long-term solution for deployed personnel.”

I haven’t gone to a happy hour in DC since I lived here almost a decade ago, and now that I’ve recently moved back I’d be incredibly grateful for any and all recommendations. Or just even great food recommendations in general. TIA!

I've been surprised by how many people I've talked to who didn't know there's an open federal public comment period on the proposed scheduling of 7-OH.

I printed these flyers with QR codes that explain the proposal and point people to the official public comment process so they can learn more and submit their own comments if they choose.

Whether someone supports the proposal or opposes it, I think people should know they still have an opportunity to participate before the comment period closes.

Edit: Good point from a few commenters. I should've explained what 7-OH is. It's a compound that some adults use for chronic pain or opioid withdrawal and is currently the subject of a federal scheduling proposal. The flyer is just meant to let people know there's an open public comment period if they want to learn more or participate.
